Opis:: 20 valid species of Ixodida (3 Argasidae and 17 Ixodidae) are actually recognized as permanently existing in Poland. Cases of transferring 5 other Ixodidae were also recorded. Argasidae are nests- and burrows-dwelling species having multi-host development cycle, they are mainly synanthropic and semisynanthropic, nocturnal active, with the peak seasonal activity in the middle of summer. The most of Polish Ixodidae species are burrows- and nests-dwelling parasites, more common species are out of nest-dwelling, having three-host development cycle; they are basically polyxenic, active during the warm season of year, normally with two peaks of activity - in spring and at the end of summer, beginning of autumn; in most cases live in forests.

Opis:: The purpose of this review was to describe and discuss the current spectrum of coinfections in Ixodidae ticks and their effects on the transmission of blood microparasites. Coinfections with Borrelia burgdorferi s. l. and Anaplasma phagocytophilum and/or Babesia sp. in ticks from Poland appear to be common, however, the potential influence on transmission dynamics, the mechanism of genetic variation and the ecology of interactions between pathogens remain poorly understood compared with infections by single pathogen.

The cleavage takes 4 days, being terminated on the 5th day of embryogenesis, when the cells start to invaginate and differentiate. The karyomeres play a role in the initial mitotic divisions. Cellularization occurs on the 2nd and 3rd day of embryogenesis. The blastoderm cells maintain their potential for division, and as from the 5th day cellular differentiation starts.

Opis:: Ticks are ectoparasites of wide variety of vertebrates living in Various types of environment all over the world. Morphological, biological, and physiological differences among tick species as well as among tick life stages are the result of tick adaptations to various life conditions. This paper presents morphological adaptations of tick tarsus to the hosts and the life conditions. The authors underline morphological differences of Haller's organ and pretarsus in four tick species: Argas reflexus (Fabricius, 1794), A. persicus (Oken, 1818), Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794), and Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus, 1758).

Opis:: 103 specimens of Python regius brought to Poland between October 2002 and March 2004 were examined. Occurrence of tick Aponomma latum was reported from 80.6 % of the examined reptiles. 549 specimens of A. latum were collected including 341 males, 149 females and 59 nymphs at the various stage of engorgement. Tick A. latum is frequently transferred beyond its natural range of occurrence — Afrotropical region.

Opis:: Dermacentor reticulatus is widely distributed dangerous tick that usually lives in the river valleys, boggy forests, meadows, and wooded pastures. Tick populations from various regions may exhibit morphological differences. In our study we compared morphometric features of tarsus in larvae D. reticulatus from Polish and Slovakian populations. I tarsus width, III tarsus length, and length of dorsal setae of I tarsus were significantly higher in Polish populations. Indices of width to length of tarsus I and tarsus III were also significantly different in both populations. The other examined morphologic features were similar, what may result from the same environmental conditions of both populations.

Opis:: Recent advance in the knowledge of the role of Ixodidae in the epidemiology of human piroplasmosis is reviewed, with special emphasis on Babesia species which cause diseases in man. The problem in Europe came to medical attention since 20 cases have been reported, and most of them due to B. divergens. However, contrary to other European countries, the zoonotic reservoir of Babesia spp. in Poland is unknown and futher research is required to elucidate the importance of Ixodidae in the transmission of piroplasms.

Opis:: In the years 1987-88 the density of the population of I. ricinus on the territory of Kraków-Częstochowa Highland including the Ojców National Park was studied. The method of collection of ticks from 100 m² fields was applied. On the spite of similar ecological conditions there was marked variation in the population density of I. ricinus. It decreased from East to West, where territories are under the strong pressure of the Upper Silesia and Olkusz industry.

Opis:: MALDI-TOF/TOF tandem mass spectrometry has been applied to determine the complete sequence of a CAPA-PVK in the Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum. Single cell analysis allowed the identification of the amino acid sequence of Ixori-PVK (PALIPFPRV-NH2), a periviscerokinin which had previously been identified from two other ticks, Ixodes ricinus and Boophilus microplus. The identification indicates greater conservation of sequence for the CAPA-PVK/CAP2b family in ticks as compared with insects. Side-chain fragmentation experiments provided data to distinguish between Leu/Ile ambiguities. The tick CAPA peptide shows a high sequence homology with other members of the insect periviscerokinin/ CAP2b peptides, which are associated with the regulation of critical physiological processes such as diuresis. Thus, the identification of this neuropeptide will provide the experimental basis to better understand regulation of water balance in these arthropods, providing a potential opportunity to develop neuropeptide-based control strategies against these livestock pests.

Opis:: Background. Ixodes ricinus tick species is the most common tick in Poland and is the primary vector of many pathogens. The aim of this study was to determine the infestation of three species of game animals: roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa) from forest area of north−western Poland. Material and methods. Examined ticks have been collected from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus) and wild boar (Sus scrofa). Results. Single specimen of roe deer harboured from 1 to 9 ticks (mean value 3,6), red deer – from 1 to 8 ticks (mean value 4,4) and wild boar – from 1 to 3 ticks (mean value 2,3). Prevalence of ticks at roe deer was 44,2%, red deer – 40 % and wild boar – 6%. Statistical analysis revealed that difference in tick prevalence between roe deer and red deer is not significant in contrast to difference between roe deer and wild boar and between red deer and wild boar, so, most likely, prevalence of tickborne pathogens is larger in examined ruminants than in wild boar. Examined species (especially ruminants) play important role in maintaining of tickborne pathogens in a local habitat, not only as a potential reservoir, but also as hosts of I. ricinus ticks.
