The article discusses twentieth-century Italian films and books devoted to the personage of Cleopatra. Fascination with the myth of the Egyptian queen reached its climax during the period of fascism; but also later Cleopatra was the subject of many works, often having little in common with the historical facts.

Today, the great US literary masterpieces are, by and large, part of the Italian heritage, as indicated by the many translations, scholarly books and intelligent, innovative essays that keep being produced and published.

Since antiquity man has been studying irony, it has always been in the center of a continuous debate of scholars of many different scientific disciplines: from Socrates to Aristophanes, from Plato and Aristotle to Cicero and Quintilianus, St. Thomas Aquinas, Baldassarre Castiglione, to the German Romantics. Irony is a world with many acceptations: for this reason, as irony is a rethorical component and a very important element of italian language and culture, it is a very interesting element, which can be used in glottodidactics. The following pages provide a brief overview on the various conceptions of irony, then move on to the suggestion of practical exercises where irony can be used in teaching italian language.

Opis:
Claudio SalmeriFaculty of PhilologyUniversity of Silesia in Katowice Sicily, Not Italy Abstract: Since the American continent became a part of the European imagination, it has always been seen to represent freedom. Especially after 1776, when the American democratic “experiment” giving rise to the United States proved durable, America became a source of social and political inspiration to generations of Europeans and non-Europeans alike. Unsurprisingly, also in the Italian context, the catalog of ways in which American values have been “translated into Italian” and adapted to Italy’s cultural space seems to be ever-growing. Yet, even though the cultural transfer dates back to Christopher Columbus, it is especially since the outbreak of World War II that Italy has been markedly influenced by intellectual and material values generated in the US. At some point, the fascination with the US soared to such a level that, incredibly as it may sound, one of the most iconic provinces of Italy would begin to imagine itself as the forty-ninth state of the US long before Alaska and Hawaii gained their present-day status: in Sicily, the American fascination seems never to abate.

«VII: foetorem in lecto». A Reading of I donneschi difetti by Giuseppe Passi Ravennate This article analyses the treatise I donneschi difetti, written by the scholar Giuseppe Passi in 1599. The first part of the article presents the architecture of the treatise and the author’s way ofarguing. The second introduces a few examples of female defects related to the sexual sphere and tries to demonstrate how, under the stigmatization of these defects, the author cannot hide his attraction and fear for women. The last part tries to explain the reason for this work, which could be interpreted as a stance by the author himself against the new phenomenon which was taking place at the time in Italian culture: that is, the figure of the female writer.

The aim of the article is to analyse the theme of cultural identity in the novel „I grandi occhi del mare” by Leonard Guaci. Starting from Gioia di Cristofaro Longo’s theoretical assumptions concerning the connection between identity and culture, we stress the influence of Italian culture on the sense of identity felt by the characters who represent Albanians living in the period of Enver Hoxha’s communist dictatorship. The analysis also draws on the theories of scholars such us Hannah Arendt, Homi Bhabha, Dominique Chancé, Giovanni Marchetti, Nora Moll.

In The Rhetoric of Empire (1993), David Spurr analyzes journalistic discourse on the Third World and isolates a nucleus of rhetorical figures around which representations of the colonial and post-colonial other are articulated. In this paper, I will borrow, in particular, three of these rhetorical figures (naturalization, idealization, appropriation) and I will adapt them to the context of contemporary Anglo-American representations of Italian culture in popular literature. I will argue that a substantial number of contemporary works on Italy retains the basic assumption of a world ordered around a dichotomy between modern cultures and pre-modern ones, and makes of this taxonomy the basic spatiotemporal context for its narratives.

Opis:
Three accounts in Polish whose fabula focuses on Paduan and Venetian realia were found by Stanisław Estreicher in the last part of a Latin juridical codex written in the 1520s. They are not translations and have no literary worth; however, they can be interesting from a sociological point of view. In this article, we point out, on the basis of what has already been established by Estreicher, the writing context in which these stories were written in the code. Estreicher hypothesised that the stories, on the basis of their spelling, had been written not by a Pole, but by a foreigner who knew the Polish language by ear. Estreicher also hypothesised, and not wrongly, that in the 1520s, the goldsmiths’ guild, which was at that time chaired by an Italian and an German, had come into possession of that code. A comparison with the spelling of other Polish-language texts written between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, however, shows that many of the graphic solutions used were well attested at the time; amongst these was the singular spelling to mark the posterior nasal vowel. In any case, the writer who wrote those accounts made an effort to maintain some coherence in spelling. Despite such an effort, the general impression is that those short stories were written by a non-Polish speaker, rather than by a foreigner who resided and worked in Krakow. These accounts are certainly traces of the presence, in Krakow and Poland, of the numerous Venetians who had started thriving entrepreneurial activities in the Respublica Polono-Lituana.

The purpose of the article is to outline the guidelines of the interdisciplinary course in comparative literature, given at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. The subject of the series of lectures is the relation between Italian literature and different branches of art, in context of their cultural references. The strategies of sensibilization of the audience both to the problem of „sister arts” and to the Italian literature and language themselves are explained. In addition, the significance of an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of reception of Italian literature in European culture is mentioned as one of the aims of the lecture. Moreover, main problems of the course, such as themes of reintepretation of Italian classics in visual arts, music, cinema and theatre, are discussed on the background of „classroom dynamics” which characterize the group of students with different knowledge of Italian language and different cultural competences.
