    Giorgio Bonsanti, as a contemporary witness of Umberto Baldini’s professional activities in Florence and his successor as Soprintendente of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, gives an overview of the closely intertwined situation in theory and practice of conservation-restoration at Baldini’s time. He analyses terms and principles of Baldini’s Theory and Methodological Unity and emphasises this theory as well as the related methods of reintegration as a development of Brandi’s Theory and the methods of the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome. Furthermore, he shortly outlines actual Italian positions in theory and practice of conservation-restoration.

    From multi-dialogue to monologue in spoken Italian: the pragmatic/prosodic basis of multi-dialogue and its transformation in narrative and descriptive monologues – The paper summarizes the Language into Act Theory (L-AcT), according to which spoken texts are analysed and aligned per utterance to the acoustic source. Three stretches of spoken Italian taken from the LABLITA Corpus (multi-dialogue, dialogue, monologue) are described according to L-AcT as regards turn-taking, information structure, and illocution. The above texts are then compared to a short literary excerpt showing the different syntactic architecture of the two language varieties.

    Il testo presenta la recensione della monografia Il romanzo in Italia pubblicato nel 2018, a cura di Giancarlo Alfano e Francesco de Cristofaro. Il lavoro propone una prova di sistematizzazione delle informazioni riguardanti la tradizione italiana del genere che, attualmente, domina indiscutibilmente il mercato editoriale. La recensione descrive la struttura dei volumi, la metodologia adottata dagli autori, i loro obiettivi e il metodo della loro realizzazione. Attraverso l’analisi di questi elementi sarà possibile valutare se l’opera in questione potrà diventare in futuro un importante punto di rifermento per le ricerche riguardanti i romanzi italiani.
    The text is devoted to Giancarlo Alfano and Francesco de Cristofaro’s monograph Il romanzo in Italia published in 2018. The work is an attempt to systematize the information about Italian tradition of the genre which nowadays unquestionably dominates the publishing market. Moreover, it describes the structure of the publication, methodological assumptions adopted by the authors, their objectives, and the way of their realisation. The analysis of these elements shows whether the work discussed can be an important point of reference for future academic works dedicated to Italian novels.

    Mena MitranoLoyola University ChicagoJFRC American Studies as Italian TheoryConsidering Roberto Esposito's narrative of Italian Theory, according to which Italian Theory first started as a US-based phenomenon and only later irradiated in other parts of the world, this paper explores the consequences of that narrative and the questions that it might raise for American Studies: Might Italian Theory rightfully belong to the Americanist's domain of inquiry? If so, what impact might it have on the identity of the Americanist? What is an Americanist?  The paper argues that this new wave of theory illuminates the confluence of American Studies and critical thought, both involved in a simultaneous movement of deterritorialization that pushes them outside their established boundaries.     The essay introduces major tenets in the current debate on postcritique, focusing especially on the widespread rejection of symptomatic reading in literary studies and on the rejection of rupture as both a modernist and theoretical model for the conception of the new. Further, it presents theory as a phase of Euro-American modernization.     The aim of this paper is to present the methods of depicting the act of persuasion on the picture in the background of the speech act theory. The analysis is based on the examples of Italian paintings from 16th and 17th century that are showing the scene of Christ meeting the adulteress. Firstly, the sequence of speech acts drawn from the text of the Gospel of saint John has been decoded. Furtherly, it was shown which of them had been chosen by the artists and how they had managed to transform the text into the painting using such tools as color, light and shade valor, and the direction of lines that organizes the composition. The conclusion is as follows: the act of persuasion can be easily recognized in painting not only due to the expressions of the faces of the protagonists of the scene and their gestures but as well due to the pure pictorial elements like the diagonal lines and strong contrast between light and shade.

    In The Rhetoric of Empire (1993), David Spurr analyzes journalistic discourse on the Third World and isolates a nucleus of rhetorical figures around which representations of the colonial and post-colonial other are articulated. In this paper, I will borrow, in particular, three of these rhetorical figures (naturalization, idealization, appropriation) and I will adapt them to the context of contemporary Anglo-American representations of Italian culture in popular literature. I will argue that a substantial number of contemporary works on Italy retains the basic assumption of a world ordered around a dichotomy between modern cultures and pre-modern ones, and makes of this taxonomy the basic spatiotemporal context for its narratives.

    Artykuł rekonstruuje historię autonomicznych ruchów społecznych w powojennej historii Włoch, których aktywność przypadała w dużym stopniu na okres tzw. "lat ołowiu". Po kolei omawiane jest powstanie operaizmu orach autonomicznego ruchu robotniczego, następnie ruchu studenckiego, operaistycznego feminizmu oraz w końcu radykalnych ruchów autonomicznych lat 70. Historia ta rekonstruowana jest z perspektywy współczesnej włoskiej filozofii politycznej, która w dużym stopniu wykształciła się na koncepcjach wypracowanych wcześniej przez autonomiczne ruchy oraz na ich doświadczeniach. Perspektywa ta, która podmiotowe praktyki oporu traktuje jako punkt wyjścia dla teoretycznych analiz, umożliwia spojrzenie na historię reakcji na autonomiczne ruchy społeczne oraz ich brutalnego stłumienia jako na źródło neoliberalnej kontrrewolucji lat 80. i 90. 
    The article focuses on the history of autonomous social movements in post-war Italy, whose activity was to a large extent contemporaneous with the infamous “years of lead”. In chronological sequence, the article moves from the birth of operaismo and the autonomous workers’ movement through the beginnings of the students’ movement and operaist feminism, and finishes with the history of the radical autonomous movements of the 1970s. This history is reconstructed from the perspective of contemporary Italian political philosophy, which developed mostly on the basis of concepts and ideas produced earlier by the autonomous movements and on their experiences. This perspective, which treats the subjective practices of resistance as the starting point of any theoretical analysis, makes it possible to look at the history of reaction to the autonomous social movements and their brutal suppression as the roots of the neoliberal counterrevolution of the 1980s and 1990s.

    Italian theater studies in 20th century focused on the theater as the art of staging a dramatic text and it’s analysis. Over the past decade, theater anthropology and performance studies make their way among these relics of the past century slowly but effectively, and the sources of the Italian performance studies are indicated in the 1960s and 1970s. Meanwhile, the interest of Italian researchers in restored behavior is reflected in texts published in-between the two world wars. The subject of the analysis are two texts by Corrado Pavolini who we consider to be a precursor of Italian performance studies.
