    The revolutionary wave in North Africa brought about deep changes − both social and political − in the region. Islamists have grown to become the most important political power in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya. Muslim Brotherhood, a while ago referred to as Islamic extremists, stands for democratic changes in the Arab world nowadays. However, a belief that the Arab revolution should create constitutional democracies modeled on western democracies is unjustified. The article indicates problems with the democracy in the Islamic world, but does not show the way to resolve them. Taking into consideration complexity of relations between Western and Islamic civilizations, differences in understanding the worth of culture and religion and requirements of current politics, it is hard to achieve a common ground. The fact has a significant influence on the possibilities of spreading the democracy across Muslims. One thing is sure: lack of knowledge cannot be superseded by fear and prejudice.

    The statement is a reference to the article Islamization of Bosnia in the XV-XVIth century, published last year in “Balcanica Posnaniensia. Acta et studia” vol. XVIII. A critical analysis of sources and a confrontation of studies made by different historians shows that the process of conquest and Islamization of Bosnia was similar (but not identical, of course!) as in the case of the other Balkan countries. The reasons for the extraordinary religious situation in contemporary Bosnia, therefore, should be sought in the events of later periods. Overview of the opinions on issues of Islamization and the Turkish conquest suggests that there is an amazing difference among historians. In the author’s opinion largely it results from causes not substantive and is rather politically motivated. Such events of the medieval past as: the history of the Bosnian Manicheans, Ottoman conquest of Bosnia or the process of Islamization become the building blocks of modern national identity of Bosnian Muslims, ie. Bošnjaks. These problems have become a part of the so-called. “Historical Politics” that resulted in very bad consequences. Author notes that the compromises, the selection of facts under a given hypothesis or to formulating opinions in the “name of higher reason” immediately brings fatal consequences and is counterproductive. The so-called “Historical Politics”, even in its mildest version, entails an instrumental treatment of the history. Such practices should always be condemned by scholars and teachers.

    After capturing the Kazakh Steppe the administrative policy of the Russian Empire aimed at putting the inhabitants of the Steppe under control. The governmental administration decided to support Islam in this territory since this religion was supposed to strengthen the Russian influence by controlling the local people through activities of the Muslim clergy. At the end of the first half of the 19th century the control over local mullahs and the people they had contact with weakened. Due to this the Russian administrative policy towards the inhabitants of the Kazakh Steppe had to be verified.
    Imperium Rosyjskie po opanowaniu Stepu Kazachskiego prowadziło politykę administracyjną, której celem był pełny nadzór nad miejscową ludnością. Sposobem na to było wspieranie islamu, co miało ugruntować wpływy rosyjskie poprzez działalność skierowanego tu lojalnego wobec władzy duchowieństwa muzułmańskiego. Pod koniec pierwszej połowy XIX w. nastąpiło jednak osłabienie kontroli nad mułłami. Wobec tego należało zweryfikować pierwotną politykę wobec ludności Stepu.

    Opis:
    Internal migrations are a growing problem in multiethnic societies. Indonesia is one of the most diverse countries in the world and home for hundreds of ethnic groups united under the main idea – national identity. But this concept remains unclear for many Indonesians, especially those living outside the central, overpopulated Java and Madura. To achieve the utopian unity, President Suharto (1967–1998) introduced the "transmigration" program, which moved people from overcrowded territories to the so-called "outer islands". The official plans emphasised its economic and development importance, but I argue that transmigration was also a political tool for introducing the processes of Indonesianisation and Islamisation. Using Michael Hechter’s theory of internal colonialism, I support my argument with reports and documents referring to the case of West Papua in Eastern Indonesia. The territory with separatist experience and a strong desire for a great autonomy serve as a good example of attempts of deliberate Indonesianisation and Islamisation. An overwhelming number of internal migrants, Javanese Muslims, gradually diluted the unity of Christian Papuans. The lack of balance between these groups creates a constant tension in a changing society. Based on the argument, I explain the influence of internal migration in a wider context. I pay attention to the dynamism of religious and ethnic structure before and after the fall of the New Order regime. I argue that the processes of Indonesianisation and Islamisation are crucial for the further existence of Papuans and solutions adopted by the Indonesian state.
    Migracje wewnętrzne stanowią coraz większy problem w społeczeństwach wieloetnicznych. Indonezja jest jednym z najbardziej różnorodnych krajów na świecie i domem dla setek grup etnicznych zjednoczonych w ramach głównej idei – tożsamości narodowej. Jednak koncepcja ta pozostaje niejasna dla wielu Indonezyjczyków, szczególnie tych mieszkających poza centralną, przeludnioną Jawą i Madurą. Aby osiągnąć utopijną jedność, prezydent Suharto (1967–1998) wprowadził program „transmigracji”, który przeniósł ludzi z przeludnionych terytoriów na tak zwane „wyspy zewnętrzne”. Oficjalne plany podkreślały jego gospodarcze i rozwojowe znaczenie, ale transmigracja była również politycznym narzędziem do wprowadzenia procesów indonezjanizacji i islamizacji. Korzystając z teorii wewnętrznego kolonializmu Michaela Hechtera, autorka popiera swój argument sprawozdaniami i dokumentami dotyczącymi przypadku Zachodniej Papui we wschodniej Indonezji. Terytorium z separatystycznym doświadczeniem i silnym pragnieniem wielkiej autonomii stanowi dobry przykład prób celowej indonezjanizacji i islamizacji. Przytłaczająca liczba wewnętrznych migrantów, jawajskich muzułmanów, stopniowo osłabiała jedność chrześcijańskich Papuasów. Brak równowagi między tymi grupami powoduje ciągłe napięcie w zmieniającym się społeczeństwie. Na podstawie tego argumentu przedstawiony jest wpływ migracji wewnętrznej w szerszym kontekście. Autorka zwraca uwagę na dynamikę struktury religijnej i etnicznej przed upadkiem reżimu Nowego Ładu i po nim i twierdzi, że procesy indonezjanizacji i islamizacji mają kluczowe znaczenie dla dalszego istnienia Papuasów i rozwiązań przyjętych przez państwo indonezyjskie.

    The split into the predominantly Muslim Northern Sudan, and Southern Sudan with a Christian and animist majority, had been emerging in the course of many centuries. Without any doubt, one is bound to mention the natural and geographical boundaries, the ethnical diversity of the regions, the influence exercised during the centuries by the Egyptians, Arabs and later on by the British. According to the opinions of some experts on the subject, there can be two distinct matters that have contributed to the split of the North and the South. These were education and religion. Apart from education, also the issue of religion was dividing the Sudan. After the declaration of independence on January 1, 1954 all the Christian private schools in the South were closed down. There remained only state schools with Arabic as the language of instruction and with the upbringing model based on the Koran teaching. Having obtained political independence, the fears of the British administration and Christian missionaries became a reality: Islam was made the state religion. The only way to attain an occupational and social status was to convert to Islam. Frequently, this took place according to the rule of an already accomplished fact or by pressure. In the context of Sudan, one of the biggest country in Africa, with its population of over 37 million, made up of 70 per cent Muslim believers , 14 per cent of Christians, and 12 per cent of animists, it is of great importance for the perception of fundamentalism to be familiar with the history of this country.

    Narracja, jaką przyjęto w czasie wojny z terroryzmem, doprowadziła państwa muzułmańskie Azji Południowo-Wschodniej do sytuacji, na którą wiele z nich nie było przygotowanych. Państwa te, powstałe z popiołów kolonializmu, walczyły o wypracowanie pragmatycznego podejścia do religijnej i narodowej tożsamości. Wśród nich szczególnie interesującym przypadkiem jest Brunei, państwo zbudowane na tożsamości malajskiej i islamie. Od końca zimnej wojny i kolonizacji do wejścia w erę rozpoczętą przez ataki z 11 września Brunei uważało się za malajskie państwo muzułmańskie, przestrzegające kodeksów prawnych i systemów politycznych odziedziczonych po brytyjskich czasach kolonialnych. Jednak już presja Stanów Zjednoczonych podczas zimnej wojny sprzyjała pierwszej fali islamizacji Brunei, mającej na celu scentralizowanie władzy politycznej i religijnej w rękach sułtana. „Wojna z terrorem” zmieniła dynamikę tego procesu, osłabiła świeckie idee i siły polityczne w kraju, dając siłom religijnym większe znaczenie i władzę w państwie. Artykuł ten pokazuje, w jaki sposób „wojna z terrorem” zwiększyła rywalizację sił religijnych z sułtanem o znaczenie religii w państwie. Ta walka zapoczątkowała drugą falę islamizacji, różniącą się od pierwszej celami oraz rodzajem promowanego islamu.
    The ‘War on Terror’ narrative placed the Muslim countries of Southeast Asia in a complex situation for which many of them were not prepared. Rising from the ashes of colonialism, Southeast Asian states with Muslim majorities had been struggling to develop a pragmatic approach towards religious and national identities of their states. Amongst the many Muslim states in the region, Brunei offers an interesting case. Brunei considered it national identity to be based on Malay identity and Islam. From the end of the Cold War and colonisation until the September 11 era, it considered itself a Malay Muslim country but followed the legal codes and political systems they inherited from the British colonial times. Pressure from the US during the Cold War encouraged the first wave of Islamisation in Brunei aiming to centralise political and religious powers in the hands of the Sultan. The ‘War on Terror’, however, transformed this dynamic in Brunei. This transformation has weakened secular ideas and political forces in the country by giving more power to religious forces in Brunei’s legal system. By studying Brunei, this paper demonstrates how the ‘War on Terror’ empowered religious forces politically by igniting a competition between the Sultan and religious forces over the degree of their religiosity. This competition has ignited the second wave of Islamisation that is different from the first one in terms of its goals, agency and the version of Islam they promote.

    As Europe faces the fact that it will have to accommodate a growing population of Muslim citizens, I decide to return to the complex question of the relationship of politics and law in contemporary Islam. In doing so, I reject the notion that Islam is somehow a monolithic and timeless, ahistorical bloc; rather, while agreeing, in principle, with the fact that Islam is nowadays heavily politicized, I argue that it is the radical interpretation and lack of modernization of Islam, and its attitude to God and law, that is the main obstacle to the prevention of the "clash of civilizations". I also point to certain institutions in the Islamic world which potentially could form the basis of future modernization.
    Europa na naszych oczach doświadcza przemian demograficznych i kulturowych, których prawdopodobnie nie uda się zahamować; jednym ze skutków tych przemian już teraz jest wzrost stosunku liczby muzułmanów do całkowitej liczby ludności państw zachodniej Europy. Na tle tych zmian, oraz wobec inspirowanych fanatyczną, radykalna odmianą islamu ataków terrorystycznych, powracam do złożonego pytania o relację polityki, prawa i religii w szeroko pojętej tradycji islamu. Czyniąc to, odrzucam jednak uproszczenie, wedle którego islam stanowi jakoby jednolity, bezczasowy i ahistoryczny fenomen, który dla każdego muzułmanina, w każdym czasie i wszelkich okolicznościach, znaczy dokładnie to samo. Islam częstokroć jest istotnie silnie upolityczniony, a niektóre jego interpretacje są zwykłym fanatyzmem, i to właśnie ten fanatyzm i radykalna interpretacja islamu, w połączeniu z koniecznością jego modernizacji i liberalizacji stanowi, moim zdaniem, główną oś problemu. W tym duchu wskazuję na dwie instytucje, które mogłyby w przyszłości posłużyć za swego rodzaju zalążek demokratyzacji w krajach islamskich.

    Na początku XXI wieku w Europie dokonuje się pod wpływem islamu dynamiczna transformacja kulturowa. Artykuł poświęcony jest islamskiej misji (da‘wa) realizowanej w kontekście europejskim, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jej roli w procesach islamizacyjnych i inkulturacyjnych. Biorąc pod uwagę sukcesywny wzrost liczby muzułmanów oraz elementów islamskich w europejskiej przestrzeni publicznej autor wysuwa tezy, że – z jednej strony – da‘wa stanowi istotny element strategii ukierunkowanej na propagowanie i rozprzestrzenianie islamu w Europie, a z drugiej – niektóre jej komponenty kształtują tzw. islam europejski. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. Pierwsza podejmuje kwestie znaczeniowe i interpretacyjne da‘wy w aspekcie semantycznym, teologicznym oraz politycznym. Przedmiotem drugiej części jest zjawisko obecności muzułmanów na kontynencie europejskim. Natomiast w ostatniej części autor omawia kompleksowość trzech rodzajów da‘wy w Europie, podając także przykłady potwierdzające jej realizację przez Arabię Saudyjską.
    Europe in the beginning of the 21st century is a place of dynamic cultural transformations, heavily coloured by Islam. The article focuses on da‘wa – the Islamic mission, its significance and the role it plays in the process of the Islamisation and inculturation in Europe. Considering the rapid growth and ever more visible presence of Muslims in the European public sphere, the author theorises that, on the one hand, da‘wa constitutes an essential element of the specific strategy of the Islamization of the world and, on the other hand, some of its components contribute to the emergence of the European type of Islam. The first part of the article presents terminology and interpretation concerning the variety of da‘wa’s semantic meanings, theological legitimisation of action within da‘wa and processes for its politicisation and institutionalisation, present in the history of Islam. The second part focuses on the Muslim presence in Europe. In the third and final part the author explains the complexity and dynamics of the three main models of da‘wa in Europe, providing also some examples of Islamic initiatives towards realization of the objective of da‘wa.
