Opis:
Contemporary the issue of violence against women has found its place in public discourse. It seems that the mythology of violence (the description of misconceptions about it) was a very important factor in the process of developing „social vigilance” against this phenomenon. Publicizing the problem of violence against women was a result of The Battered Women’s Movement. The need to struggle with the mythology of violence underlined the leading representative of this movement L.E.A. Walker: „It is important to refute all the myths surrounding battered women in order to understand fully why battering happens, how it affects people, and how it can be stopped”. The aim of the study is to examine the myths about domestic violence – those of the 1970s and 1980s, when The Battered Women’s Movement began to develop, and those of today. The verification of the opinions dealing with the phenomenon was based on scientific literature. Three categories of myths were analyzed: the nature, causes and consequences of violence. Modern literature suggest that there has been a dramatic change in public convictions about intimate partner violence – some opinions considered in the past as mythical has become the truth and vice versa. Social changes also led to the creation of new myths e.g. violence is typical for heterosexual relationships. Such processes carry a risk of flawed perception of violence by society. This is why preventive actions should not only indicate the presence of violence in our direct surroundings, but also update the general knowledge about it.

Opis:
Intimate partner violence is a difficult experience for ever, or at least for a very long time, disturbing family life, robbing the victim of a sense of safety, which is one of the most important human needs. This problem cannot be ignored. Therefore, the legal system provides certain mechanisms designed to protect victims of violence. Are these measures effective? The article discusses this problem, providing answers to this question, based on the results of research conducted as part of the international project SNaP „Special Needs and Protection Orders”, which is part of the Daphne III programme. Qualitative research (multiple casestudies) were conducted among practitioners, whose work is concerned with domestic violence were supplemented with an analysis of case files from the District Court in Białystok. Practitioners evaluate selected measures of protecting female victims of intimate partner violence more or less positively, depending on the represented area of support. Polarisation of opinion is natural. However, there is no doubt that the effectiveness of protecting victims of aggression in the household increases, but the still existing problems of the system have to be addressed so that they can be improved in the future.

Opis:
This article analyzes intimate partner violence and femicide in Ecuador from an ecological perspective. The qualitative study, involving the participation of 61 individuals, took place in the province of Imbabura and was based on eight interviews with qualified experts and seven focus groups made up of professionals from the field of social and public services. The study comprises: a) the characterization of the dynamic of violence and risk of femicide; b) the analysis of the microsystem in relation to the family, neighbors, and professionals; c) an examination of the institutional response; and d) the assessment of the patriarchal culture, the role of the church, and indigenism. The results point to the permanence of a naturalized, chauvinistic culture, the lack of an effective network of resources to support victims, and a rigid administrative structure. As a consequence, victims have little confidence in public institutions, rates of reporting and prosecuting cases of violence are very low, and there is a perception that the aggressors are able to act with impunity, increasing the risk of severe violence and femicide.

Opis:
Femicide—the killing of a female because of her gender—is becoming an increased object of sociological enquiry, rectifying years of invisibility. The article presents results from ethnographic interviews with three migrant women who survived “failed femicides.” A “failed femicide” is defined as an attempted femicide where the medical examination of the victim confirmed a life-threatening event, the victim had been hospitalized in emergency, and she or the perpetrator had described the event as an attempted murder. It is argued that failed femicides should be added to the growing literature on domestic violence, on the one hand, and femicide, on the other. The article presents narratives from three survivors of failed femicide attempts among Ethiopian female migrants in Israel. They present an interesting contrast to large-scale, quantitative, ethnocentric, male-oriented studies of femicide focusing on Western women. Since few women actually survive femicide attempts, the nature of the small sample should not deter the scholar from the depth of migrant women’s plights. The survivor narratives were analyzed by means of thematic analysis. The analysis produced five key categories: village society in Ethiopia; cycle of domestic violence; motive; weapon; and recourse to authorities. The themes provided understanding into these migrant women’s subjective experiences and the ways they understood events. While no generalizations can be made, the article may encourage comparisons with other failed femicide survivor narratives from other migrant women originating and residing in different settings. With the increase of migrants the world over, non-Western survivor narratives may become an increasingly important tool for policy-makers and for academics to understand how femicides occur, how migrant women perceive them, and how they can be combated.

The paper explores the role of fostering moral-democratic competencies for violence prevention, in particular in the relation to genderbased, intimate partner and domestic violence. Additionally, significant emphasis is placed on the prevention of revictimisation. Violence prevention is framed with regard to the political importance of violence-free homes and intimate relationships for the empowerment of women. The paper refers to the complex situation of women subjected to abuse and the effects of violence on an individual. As a countermeasure, the paper proposes the development of moral-democratic competencies, and recommends the Konstanz Method of Dilemma Discussion® as an example of an efficient method to accomplish this task.

Opis:
Intimate partner violence is defined as a form of violence where, in an intimate relationship, physical or psychological acts of violence are committed by a partner or spouse against the other partner or spouse. All of these actions are accompanied by extremely emotional dynamics, which is paradoxical, as we would expect that with the gravity of abusive and violent acts the victims will understand the need for self-protection and appropriate measures. There is a strong emotional bond between the victim and the abuser, which authors call traumatic bonding. It is an emotional dependence between two people in a relationship that is characterized by the feelings of intense attachment, cognitive distortion and behavioural strategies of both individuals that paradoxically strengthen and maintain the bond, which is reflected in a vicious cycle of violence. The termination of such a relationship or the departure from it, from the point of view of attachment which is activated in this situation, seems risky, since the victim seeks refuge in the state of perceived danger, but experiences that - after the outbreak of violence calms down - the refuge is paradoxically offered by the bully. Here we can recognize a pattern of dysfunctional affect regulation that falsely calms difficult (basic) affects and maintains a violent relationship. From the viewpoint of Relational Family Therapy, it is therefore necessary for victims that after breaking off a violent relationship or leaving it they face their painful basic affects and develop proper regulation of these, otherwise they will remain committed to this kind of relationship. Using the case study method, the paper describes the case of a client after she left a violent intimate relationship, with an emphasis on the demonstration of traumatic bonding dynamics and the resolution of their consequences in Relational Family Therapy. Opis:
Authors describe the concept explaining sources of Intimate Partner Violence from the perspective of moral psychology in the Polish background. The latest research point out that men convicted of IPV may be affected by moral paradoxes that make them reluctant to change their aggressive behavior. The sacred values ( that can lead to violence) are relevant for this sample. Moreover, man are also confident of their moral views and values, and they see the moral world in black and white colors, what helps them to justify their aggressive behavior. In addition, they are related with the mechanisms of self-deception about their behavior. In this concept the perpetrator is not seen from the perspective of pathology, but described as a “normal man” involved in the moral paradoxes that lead him to violence. At the end of the article authors discuss the practical implications of the concept in Poland.

Opis:
This qualitative study investigates the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and the duration of marriage in the Turkish context and explores spouses’ perceptions, experiences, and solutions concerning IPV. Participants were thirty Turkish couples married for twenty or more years. Data collection tools were a semi-structured interview, observation notes taken during the interview, and a socio-demographic questionnaire. Data analysis showed that psychological violence was the most reported type, while sexual and economic violence was not reported in long-term marriages. Only a few instances of physical violence were reported during the first years of marriage. Regarding gender, the perpetrators of physical IPV were all men except for only one case, while both men and women were the perpetrators and victims of psychological violence. Spouses’ proposed solutions for IPV were identifying the determinants of IPV, encouraging religious and values education, solving economic problems, building communication and patience, learning respect, responsibility, and love; or getting divorced. The study suggests some implications for professionals.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawione zostały możliwości pracy z osobą stosującą przemoc w rodzinie, a w szczególności w związku romantycznym, w nurcie behawioralno-poznawczym oraz systemowym. Głębsza analiza możliwości oddziaływań terapeutycznych wskazuje na zasadność łączenia obu technik, z jednej strony, wyposażając klienta w narzędzia i techniki do zmiany zachowań, a z drugiej, stwarzając przestrzeń do pracy w szerszym kontekście rodzinnym. W pracy podjęto też próbę analizy możliwości pracy z parą, w relacjach której dochodzi do przemocy, czy to w warunkach izolacji więziennej, czy też po opuszczeniu zakładu karnego. Przedstawione rozważania poszerzają postrzeganie warunków izolacji więziennej o możliwości budowania nowej rzeczywistości i zmianę zachowania już w trakcie odbywania kary pozbawienia wolności.
The purpose of this paper is to present the possibilities of taking therapeutic actions in the conditions of prison isolation towards persons who commit acts of domestic violence. Clinical practice and research reports indicate the validity of expanding rehabilitation and correctional programs to include deeper therapeutic work with inmates. The conditions of prison isolation make it somewhat difficult to establish a therapeutic relationship, but on the other hand, building contact between the inmate and the therapist can serve as a form of relationship-building training based on mutual respect and trust. The paper presents the possibilities of working with a person who used to commit acts of domestic violence, in particular in a romantic relationship (IPV – Intimate Partner Violence) using behavioral-cognitive and systemic approaches. Deeper analysis of possibilities of using therapeutic actions indicates the validity of combining both techniques. On the one hand, patients are equipped with tools and techniques allowing them to change their behavior, on the other hand, creating space to work within the broader family context. The article also features an attempt to analyze the possibilities of working with a couple who experience domestic violence, either in the conditions of prison isolation or after leaving the penitentiary. The considerations presented below widen the understanding of prison isolation conditions as a possibility to build a new reality and change behavior even when serving a prison sentence.

Opis:
The paper first contextualizes femicide in the broader context of domestic violence, and homicide in the Republic of Cyprus. It then goes on to report a qualitative study of eighteen intimate partner femicide (IPF) orphans during the period 2001-2014. Findings concerning IPF, offender, and victim characteristics but also pertaining to a broad range of themes that emerged in the face-to-face interviews with the orphans are also reported and discussed. In support of theoretical notions of power and control and gender inequality, the study reported also documents of a prior history of serious conflict, physical, verbal, and psychological abuse of the IPF victim by a jealous, possessive, controlling, and oppressive violent male partner or ex-partner. Evidence is provided of the tragic inability of the authorities to heed numerous warning signs and threats-to-kill by the offender and so avert such murders. Finally, attention turns to the policy and research implications of the findings with emphasis on lethal domestic violence prevention and better support of the orphans involved.
