Enterprise internationalisation International market
Opis:: A review of the literature and research on internationalization of Polish companies as well as author's own studies indicate that at present two models of internationalization coincide in Poland: a stages model and a model of early internationalization. It is very interesting because the model of early internationalization appeared in Poland at the same time as in developed countries, i.e. at the beginning of the 1990s. Yet one could expect that all Polish companies should develop according to the stages model since internationalization was something totally new for Polish companies in the 1990s. The author postulates more intensive and more extensive research on born globals in Poland to reduce the gap between research on this topic in developed countries and in Poland. Also a cross-country study of born globals in CEE is proposed with comparison of results to studies on born globals from other European countries.

Opis:: The paper describes the choice of target segment to which the company will focus in the international environment in the future. The selection criteria of rational reasons are used in certain sequences, so the entire targeting process can be divided into several levels. An important instrument by foreign target market selection is the method of selectivity analysis that is described in this paper based on the modification of the selectivity analysis by Šupín, M. This method evaluates companies based on selected criteria = evaluation criteria. The result of method isan evaluation of foreign markets under consideration as potential markets in which the company wants to enter, and then the selection of best value market. The value of each market is created as a multiplication of an importance which is attached by the evaluator to particular criteria and performance (rate of impletion of the criteria by the market). The selectivity analysis is performed on several levels, in each level other group of evaluation criteria is used and each level, respectively an evaluation level represents another step towards a real appropriate foreign market from those chosen by the company as potential target markets at the beginning. Condition of selectivity analysis performance is: - to determine the segment of foreign markets after the previous segmentation based on particular segmentation criteria, - to determine the set of evaluation criteria. The selection process can be divided according to the degree of accuracy for gross and fine selectivity analysis.

Opis:: Research background: International market selection is an essential issue for big companies that supply food products. Different types of decision factors and different characteristics of different international markets have brought up a complicated decision-making problem for food supply companies. In order to select the most suitable and profitable market, food supply companies have to consider several qualitative and quantitative factors, including social, political, economic, and ecological aspects. Purpose of the article: In order to overcome international market selection issues, the current study develops a novel integrated decision-making tool. Methods: A novel decision-making model of market analysis is developed as an extended model of Market Attractiveness and Business Attractiveness (MABA) analysis based on the Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM). To improve the MABA analysis model, we combine the EDAS method with MABA analysis to empower decision-makers in food supply companies to evaluate several international markets and select the most profitable market for their products. Findings & value added: In this study, we first identified the most important and frequently used decision factors for market analysis problems within MABA analysis under two categories: market attractiveness and business attractiveness. To show the proposed methodology's applicability and feasibility, we perform a case study for a food supply company in Iran that supplies products to Middle East and Asian countries. In order to investigate the reliability of the obtained results, we perform a sensitivity analysis concerning the importance of involved decision factors. The proposed decision-making tool results suggest that the model can be used as a reliable tool for market analysis problems. To sum up the long-term value of the study, we have developed a novel decision-making tool using MABA analysis and the EDAS method. No study integrates any MCDM methods with MABA analysis to the best of our knowledge. Integration of EDAS method with MABA analysis empowers decision-makers in market selection division to use more systematic methods for evaluating several markets.

Porównano przewozy realizowane indywidualnymi środkami transportu oraz transportem zbiorowym. Pod uwagę wzięto dostępność danego środka transportu, czas podróży oraz cenę.
Mobility is extremely important for economic development and for the quality of life of citizens who are free to travel both for leisure and leisure purposes and for business purposes or training. In this article, being the first of two publications on international competition passenger transport, results are presented analysis of transport offers from Warsaw to the capitals of the countries of Northern and Western Europe. Comparisons were made with individualized transport and public transport. Considered taken availability of the means of transport, travel time and price.

Opis:: Górnictwo węgla kamiennego ze względu na wysokie koszty stałe jest bardzo wrażliwe na zmiany cen węgla. Trwający od połowy 2011 r. spadkowy trend cen na światowym rynku węgli metalurgicznych sprawia, że w cenach bieżących znaczna część węgla sprzedawana jest poniżej kosztów produkcji, a koncerny notują straty na działalności górniczej. Udział Polski w światowym handlu węglem koksowym jest niewielki, jednak o cenach nie decydują krajowe koszty produkcji, ale sytuacja rynkowa. W artykule porównano dynamikę zmian cen krajowego węgla koksowego na tle cen węgli w handlu międzynarodowym. Przedstawiono aktualną sytuację na międzynarodowym rynku węgli koksowych oraz prognozy kształtowania się cen w nadchodzących latach. Utrzymująca się nadpodaż węgli przy umiarkowanym popycie ze strony głównych importerów nie stwarza warunków do szybkiego odbicia się cen węgli. Mocna korelacja cen krajowego węgla koksowego z cenami węgli na rynku międzynarodowym wskazuje, że – w przypadku sprawdzenia się prognoz – również rok 2015 może być bardzo trudny dla polskich producentów węgla.
Coal mining, due to high fixed costs, is very sensitive to changes in coal prices. Since mid-2011, there has been an ongoing downward trend of prices in the global market for metallurgical coals, which make up a significant part of the coal sold at current prices; this coal is being sold below the cost of production with companies recording losses. Poland’s share in the global coking coal trade is small, and the prices are not determined by the national cost of production but by the internationalmarket situation. This article compares the dynamics of domestic coking coal prices in light of coal prices in international trade, presenting the current situation in the international market as well as forecasts of prices in the coming years. The continuing oversupply of coal under conditions of moderate demand from major importers is not encouraging the conditions for a rapid rebound in coal prices. A strong correlation of domestic coking coal prices with the prices of coal in the international market indicates that – if the forecast were to come true – the year 2015 could be very difficult for Polish coal producers.

Opis:: According to literature, herding can be observed not only within single stock market, but also on international level. Poland has entrance to Euro Zone in perspective, so especially interesting is answer to the question whether herding is present on the stock markets of candidate countries to Euro Zone? Moreover, whether this tendency will be more noticeable in periods of higher volatility than during the periods of relative market stability, as suggested by psychological theories. To find the measure of herd tendency we can refer both to neoclassical and behavioral theories. Basing on models grounded in rationality assumption, there is a need to assume informative efficiency of markets. Thus, it can be expected that aggregated changes in stock markets should be reflected in the process of prices formation. Behavioral literature pointed that if tendency of herding is present on international level, it can be assumed that markets ‘in average’ will behave in the similar way. Following this idea the size of deviation of the given series from the ‘average’ can be taken as the measure of herding activity in aggregated market. Methodology created by Christie, Huang and Chang, Cheng, Khoran will be used as a starting point for the consideration of this problem. To propose more perfect measure of herding, in the paper this approach will be developed by using alternative methodology for average and measure of deviations construction. Those improvements will cause that, theoretical models will come closer to reality and will take into account both sociological and behavioral tendencies present in investors activity.

Opis:: W referacie przedstawiono aktualną sytuację na międzynarodowym rynku handlu węglem koksowym oraz prognozy cen na lata następne. Ostatnie dwa lata nie były najlepsze dla producentów węgla koksowego. W wyniku recesji gospodarczej na świecie nastąpiło zmniejszenie tempa zużycia i produkcji wyrobów stalowych, co znalazło odbicie na rynkach surowców hutniczych. Duże zapasy węgla w Chinach, niskie zapotrzebowanie w Indiach i pozostałej części Azji oraz w krajach Europy przyczyniły się do powstania nadpodaży na rynku i presję na spadek cen. Chiny będące największym na świecie producentem i konsumentem węgli metalurgicznych od 2009 r. są również jednym z największych jego importerów. Handlowcy z uwagą obserwują więc dynamikę zmian podaży i popytu na rynku chińskim, bo to znajduje przełożenie na ceny na rynku spot. Wzrost znaczenia Chin w handlu węglem powoduje, że rynek jest coraz bardziej dwubiegunowy, a ceny na bazie CFR Chiny (obok cen FOB węgla australijskiego) stają się ważnymi wskaźnikami rynkowymi. W opinii wielu analityków w najbliższej perspektywie rynek pozostanie słaby, a nadpodaż, nawet jeżeli zostanie częściowo ograniczona przez cięcia produkcji, nie zniknie szybko. Nie ma istotnych podstaw do prognozowania znacznego wzrostu popytu - produkcja stali w Chinach zwolni, a w Indiach osłabienie krajowej waluty i spowolnienie gospodarcze będzie ograniczać wzrost zapotrzebowania na surowce. Zapotrzebowanie Chin na węgiel importowany nie wzrośnie wystarczająco w najbliższym czasie, by stanowić wsparcie dla trwałego wzrostu cen węgla koksowego.
This paper presents the current situation in the international coking coal trade and price forecasts for subsequent years. The last two years were not the best for coking coal producers. As a result of the global economic recession, there has been a slowdown in consumption and production of steel products which was reflected in raw materials markets for metallurgy. Large stocks of coal in China, and low demand in India and the rest of Asia and Europe contributed to oversupply in the market and downward pressure on prices. China, being the largest producer and consumer of metallurgical coal since 2009, is also one of the biggest importers. Traders are thus watching the dynamics of supply and demand in the Chinese market because this affects the prices on the spot market. The growing importance of China in the coal trade means that the market is becoming increasingly bipolar, with prices based on CFR China and coal FOB Australia, being important indicators of the market. In the opinion of many analysts, in the near term the market will remain weak, and oversupply even if it is partially limited by production cuts will not disappear quickly. There are no substantial grounds for predicting a significant increase in demand. Production of steel in China will slow, and in India a weakening of the domestic currency and an economic slowdown will limit the growth in demand for raw materials. Chinese demand for imported coal will not rise enough in the near future to support the sustainable growth of prices.

Opis:: Komisja Europejska opublikowała w maju 2014 r. Komunikat (COM(2014) 297 final) w sprawie przeglądu wykazu surowców krytycznych dla Unii Europejskiej i wdrażania inicjatywy na rzecz surowców. Dwadzieścia surowców wymienionych w dokumencie ma znaczenie krytyczne, ponieważ ryzyko związane z brakiem podaży oraz jego skutki dla gospodarki krajów Unii Europejskiej są większe niż w przypadku innych surowców. Wpisanie węgla koksowego na listę surowców krytycznych świadczy o jego istotnym znaczeniu dla gospodarki krajów członkowskich. Dla europejskiego przemysłu stalowego ważna jest gwarancja stabilnych dostaw swoich podstawowych surowców na konkurencyjnych warunkach. UE (28) jest historycznie znaczącym importerem węgla koksowego, najważniejszego obok rudy żelaza surowca dla przemysłu stalowego. W artykule omówiono czynniki określające krytyczność węgla koksowego. Scharakteryzowano strukturę geograficzną światowej produkcji i zużycia węgla koksowego, stopień uzależnienia krajów UE od importu oraz wptyw sytuacji rynkowej na zmienność cen w handlu tym surowcem.
In May 2014, the European Commission published the Communication (COM (2014) 297 final) on the review of the list of critical raw materials for the European Union and the implementation of the RMI. Twenty raw materials listed in the document are critical because the risks associated with a lack of supply and its impact on the economies of the European Union are higher than for other raw materials. Placing coking coal on the list of critical raw materials prove its importance for the economy of the member countries. For the European steel industry it is important to guarantee stable supplies of its key raw materials at competitive conditions. The EU (28) is a historically significant importer of coking coal, which the most important raw material for the steel industry aside from iron ore. The article discusses the factors determining the criticality of coking coal. It also characterizes the geographical structure of world production and consumption of coking coal, the degree of dependence of EU countries on imports and the impact of market conditions on the price volatility in the trading of this raw material.

Opis:: W ostatnim dziesięcioleciu rosnące zapotrzebowanie na importowany węgiel ze strony odbiorców (głównie azjatyckich) zbiegało się z ograniczeniami podaży ze strony głównych dostawców. Na ciąg zdarzeń określanych, jako tzw. siła wyższa, złożyło się wiele zdarzeń w krajach eksporterów, w tym głównie ograniczenia produkcji w wyniku cyklonów i powodzi w Australii (w stanie Queensland – największym światowym regionie wydobycia węgli koksowych typu hard). Zachwianie równowagi między popytem i podażą powoduje, że ceny surowców podlegają cyklicznym zmianom, jednak w ostatnich latach częstotliwość i dynamika tych zmian na międzynarodowym rynku węgli metalurgicznych (hard, semi-soft, PCI) była niezwykle wysoka. Wiodącą rolę w tych zdarzeniach odegrały Chiny, będące największym światowym producentem i konsumentem węgli koksowych. Działania polityczne władz chińskich odnośnie ich krajowego górnictwa oraz branży hutniczej i przemysłu koksochemicznego sprawiły, że od 2013 r. kraj ten zdetronizował Japonię i zyskał pozycję światowego lidera w imporcie węgli metalurgicznych. Wzrost znaczenia Chin w handlu węglem spowodował, że rynek stawał się coraz bardziej dwubiegunowy, a ceny na bazie CFR Chiny (obok cen FOB węgla australijskiego) stały się ważnymi wskaźnikami do monitorowania tendencji rynkowych i wyznaczania poziomów negocjowanych benchmarków. W artykule opisano ścieżkę zmian mechanizmu cenowego w handlu węglem metalurgicznym na tle uwarunkowań rynkowych, generujących te zmiany.
Over the past decade, the growing demand for imported coal from consumers (mainly Asian) coincided with supply constraints on the part of major suppliers. The sequence of events is referred to as force majeure. There were many events in the exporting countries, mainly including the cyclone and floods in Australia (Queensland, the world’s largest hard coking coal mining region). Imbalance between supply and demand causes commodity prices to be subject to cyclical changes, but in recent years the frequency and dynamics of these changes in the international metallurgical market (hard coking coal, semi-soft coking coal, PCI coal) has been extremely high. China, the world’s largest producer and consumer of coking coal, played a leading role in these events. Political action by the Chinese authorities regarding their domestic mining and metallurgical industries and the coke-chemical industry has made the country dethrone Japan since 2013 and has become a global leader in metallurgical coal imports. The rise of China’s importance in coal trading has become an important benchmark for monitoring market trends and benchmarking benchmarks. The market has become more bipolar and CFR China’s prices (in addition to Australia’s FOB prices). The paper describes the path of pricing mechanism changes in international trade contracts for metallurgical coal, against the background of market conditions that generate these changes.

Opis:: W okresie ostatnich dwóch lat ceny węgla koksowego były najbardziej niestabilne wśród głównych towarów masowych. Po stronie podaży najważniejszym czynnikiem determinującym ruch cen węgla były problemy pogodowe wpływające na eksport węgla z Australii (Queensland), gdzie koncentruje się produkcja najlepszych jakościowo węgli koksowych. Po stronie popytowej istotnym czynnikiem jest rosnąca na rynku rola Chin, które, będąc największym światowym producentem i konsumentem węgli metalurgicznych, stały się również jego największym importerem. Dominujący, około 75% udział Chin w światowym rynku spot powoduje, że stopień ich aktywności wpływa na okresowe spadki lub wzrosty cen w handlu międzynarodowym, a ceny na bazie CFR Chiny (obok cen FOB węgla australijskiego) stały się ważnymi wskaźnikami do monitorowania tendencji rynkowych i wyznaczania poziomów negocjowanych benchmarków. Wyjątkowa niestabilność na rynku doprowadziła w połowie 2017 r. do zmiany kwartalnego mechanizmu ustalania cen dla kontraktowych ładunków węgla hard premium na stosowanie formuły, która zakłada wycenę ich kwartalnych wolumenów na podstawie średniej z koszyka indeksów cen spotowych. Odzwierciedla to szerszy trend zmieniającego się rynku, wraz z rosnącą aktywnością rynku spot. W artykule opisano bieżącą sytuację na międzynarodowym rynku węgla koksowego oraz przedstawiono krótkoterminowe prognozy cen węgla koksowego hard premium (PHCC LV), które są punktem odniesienia dla ustalania cen pozostałych typów węgli metalurgicznych (hard standard, semi-soft, PCI).
Over the past two years, coking coal prices have been the most volatile among major bulk commodities. On the supply side, the most important factor determining the movement of coal prices were weather problems affecting the exports of coal from Australia (Queensland), where the production of the best quality coking coals is concentrated. On the demand side, an important factor is the growing role of China on the market, which, being the world’s largest producer and consumer of metallurgical coal, has also become its largest importer. The dominant, about 75% share of China in the global spot market has resulted in their level of activity influencing the periodic price decreases or increases in international trade and prices based on CFR China (along with Australian FOB prices) have become important indicators to monitor market trends and determine levels of negotiated benchmarks. The exceptional volatility on the market led to a change in the quarterly price fixing mechanism for hard-load hard coal contractors in mid–2017 to apply a formula that assumes the valuation of their quarterly volumes based on the average of the basket of spot price indices. This reflects the broader trend of the evolving market, with growing spot market activity. The article describes the current situation on the international coking coal market and presents short-term forecasts for hard coking hard coal prices (PHCC LV), which are a reference point for fixing prices of other types of metallurgical coal (hard standard, semi-soft, PCI).

Opis:: Companies, facing globalization and technological revolution, are constantly forced to search for new ways to grow and develop. A profitable growth strategy can be built through international expansion. Recently it has become one of the few effective ways to develop and enhance the competitiveness of a company in response to the changing dynamics of the global economy. When a company is expanding its business operations to overseas markets a number of strategic decisions must be taken. The company must define the product it wants to market (what), the country market it wants to enter (where), the timing of entry (when) and the entry mode it wants to use (how). Consequently, the country market selection plays a critical role in shaping the performance of foreign activities and influences the future success of the company. This is a complex and difficult decision, requiring the company to analyse a wide spectrum of factors that affect both investment efficiency and effectiveness. The location selection in international expansion may be determined by general macroeconomic factors, demand factors, socio-political factors or cost factors. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a simulation of the market selection decision with the help of multi-criteria decision aiding methods based on the perspective of a dynamically developing company that is a leading manufacturer and distributor of hygiene, cosmetic and medical products.

Opis:: Odzwierciedleniem globalnych procesów zachodzących w gospodarce światowej jest koniunktura na rynku stali. Pierwsza dekada obecnego stulecia to niewątpliwie najbardziej znaczący okres w historii światowego przemysłu stalowego i branż z nim powiązanych. Sytuacja na światowym rynku węgla koksowego jest bezpośrednio powiązana z wielkością produkcji surówki żelaza w procesie wielkopiecowym. W artykule opisano zmiany na światowym rynku węgli koksowych na tle zdarzeń gospodarczych zachodzących w analizowanym okresie. Omówiono czynniki wpływające na wielkość obrotu i zmienność cen węgli koksowych w handlu międzynarodowym. Opisano najnowsze trendy w systemie kontraktowania oraz propozycje tworzenia indeksów cenowych dla węgli koksowych, podobnych do od dawna funkcjonujących indeksów na rynku węgli energetycznych. W artykule przedstawiono również przewidywania dotyczące koniunktury na rynku węgli koksowych w nadchodzących latach w powiązaniu z prognozami odnoszącymi się do rynku stali. Rozwój inwestycji mających na celu zwiększenie światowego wydobycia węgla koksowego poprawi bilans podaży i popytu i będzie wywierać presję na obniżenie rynkowych cen węgli koksowych w dłuższym horyzoncie czasowym.
Steel market conditions reflect global processes in the world economy. The first decade of this century was undoubtedly the most important period in the history of the global steel industry and related branches of the economy. The situation in the international coking coal market is directly connected with the production volume of blast furnace iron. This paper describes changes in the global market of coking coal within the context of events taking place over the analysed time period. It examines factors influencing sales volume and coking coal price variation in international trade. The newest trends in the contracting system, as well as proposals for creating price indices for coking coals similar to those functioning for a long time in the steam coal market have been described. The paper also presents predictions on conditions in the coking coal market for the forthcoming years in connection with forecasts for the steel market. Development of investments for the purpose of increasing global coking coal production will improve the supply/demand balance and will exert pressure to lower the coking coal prices in the longer term.
