The new aeshnopteran family Enigmaeshnidae is proposed for Enigmaeshna deprei gen. et sp. nov., the first fossil insect collected as imprint in the Earliest Cenomanian clay of the Puy−Puy quarry at Tonnay−Charente (Charente−Maritime, SW France). The bed bearing E. deprei was previously known for its highly diversified fossil plant assemblage. Although this taxon belongs to the much derived clade Aeshnodea, it is characterized by several unique hind wing venation characters, never found in other Aeshnoptera, viz. part of MAb distal of the trigonal planate very long, and presence of five posterior branches of AA directed towards posterior wing margin.

Renphasma sinica gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation in Liaoning. It has the general habitus of the Mesozoic “stick−insects”, with a short thorax, and broad and long tegmina, as long as the hindwings. Its pattern of tegmina venation is typical of the Mesozoic Phasmatodea, also present in the Eocene stick insect family Gallophasmatidae, viz. archaeorthopteran organisation of median and cubital veins. On the other side it has a vomer typical of modern Phasmatodea, both supporting the hypothesis that the Mesozoic, Cainozoic, and modern stick insects belong to the same clade. The pattern of dark and hyaline spots on the wings of Renphasma is probably related to mimicry with plants.

The performed investigations were carried out on meadow complexes situated in the region of Wielkopolska recognised for its long traditions of meadow management and bee-keeping. The results of our investigations and observations show that permanent meadows exhibit sufficient floristic diversity to make them attractive for Apidae. However, flights of Apidae to visit meadow communities in order to collect nectar vary. The attractiveness of Cirsium oleraceum communities is evidently higher than that of Alopecurus pratensis, while communities with Trifolium repens and Taraxacum officinale occupy intermediate positions. All the above-mentioned plant communities are more attractive for Apoidae than Brassica napus cultivations. In addition, visits paid to individual species of plant communities also vary. Apoidae appear to favour in particular the following plant species: Vicia cracca, Trifolium sp., Taraxacum officinale, Cirsium sp., Leontodon autumnalis, Melilotus sp., Polygonum bistorta, Euphrasia rostkoviana and Lychnis flos-cuculi. Another advantage of permanent meadows is the presence in their sward of plants which blossom during the entire period of vegetation. Therefore, if we want to enhance meadow floristic diversity, it is necessary to introduce (by oversowing) into their communities plant species which are visited by Apidae most readily. In addition, it can be concluded on the basis of the performed experiments that the Apoidae population in our region is very poor and is limited to the following little species: Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris and B. lapidaries, B. sylvarum, B. pascuorum and Halictus sp.
Prace badawcze prowadzono na kompleksach łąkowych regionu Wielkopolska, który posiada duże tradycje gospodarki łąkowej oraz pszczelarstwa. Wyniki naszych badań i obserwacji wskazują, że łąki trwałe wykazują różnorodność florystyczną runi na takim poziomie, który czyni ją atrakcyją dla Apidae. Oblatywanie zbiorowisk łąkowych przez Apidae jest jednak zróżnicowane. Atrakcyjność zbiorowisk z Cirsium oleraceum jest wyraźnie większa niż z Alopecurus pratensis. Miejsca pośrednie zajmują zbiorowiska z Trifolium repens i z Taraxacum officinale. Wszystkie te zbiorowiska są dla Apidae bardziej atrakcyjne niż uprawy Brassica napus. Zróżnicowane jest także oblatywanie poszczególnych gatunków zbiorowisk. Apidae szczególnie faworyzują Vicia cracca, Trifolium sp., Taraxacum officinale, Cirsium sp., Leontodon autumnalis, Melilotus sp., Polygonum bistorta, Euphrasia rostkoviana. Atutem łąk trwałych jest także obecność w runi roślin kwitnących przez cały okres wegetacji. Dla zwiększenia różnorodności florystycznej łąk zasadne jest wprowadzanie, poprzez podsiew, gatunków roślin najchętniej oblatywanych przez Apidae.Wświetle naszych badań i obserwacji można również stwierdzić, że populacja Apidae w sferze gatunkowej jest w naszym regionie uboga i ogranicza się do niewielkiej liczby gatunków Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris, B. lapidarius, B. sylvarum, B. pascuorum oraz Halictus sp.

The fossil dragonfly Eumorbaeschna adriankini sp. nov. is decribed as first fossil insect from the Upper Jurassic of Central Poland (Owadów−Brzezinki quarry, Tomaszów Mazowiecki area), and as first record of the family Eumor− baeschnidae (Odonata, Anisoptera, Aeshnoptera) outside the Solnhofen lithographic limestone.

Knowledge of the flowering phase and plant pollination ecology is very important for understanding the life history of long-lived perennials. In the case of rare species, the information may have implications for conservation practices. Our studies on flower morphology and blooming biology of the vulnerable plant Senecio macrophyllus M. BIEB. were conducted in situ (flowering, activity of insect visitors) in the largest population in SE Poland and in laboratory (light and scanning electron microscopy). The disc florets open diurnally with most intensive anthesis in the early afternoon and attract insect visitors with nectar and pollen. In highly protandrous disc florets, pollen viability decreases in time, whereas stigma receptivity increases. The upper part of the pistil forms a brush-like pollen presenter, covered with unicellular trichomes with chromoplasts. Pollen presentation lasts 4–11 hours per floret, and 8 days in a single head, the main function of which is to extend the availability of male gamets for reproduction. The number of florets per head, the head size, and the number of pollen grains produced per anther, and the pollen grain viability differed significantly between microsites. The finding indicates that, apart from the biotic factors, abiotic conditions may considerably influence generative reproduction of the species. In the study area, the principal visitors of S. macrophyllus flowers were Hymenoptera, with predominance of Apis mellifera (53.4% of visits). The remarkable share of butterflies (13.9%) recognized as the long-distance moving insects may improve the genetic variability of individuals within a fragmented population. A more detailed study is necessary to explain the role of insect visitors in effective pollination and in gene transfer between patches. The assessment of optimal conditions for the generative reproduction is fundamental for the in situ conservation of this rare species.

This study investigated the floral biology and pollen quantity and quality of Campanula bononiensis L. (Campanulaceae), a protected species in Poland. Observations and measurements were made during the years 2007–2009 in natural phytocoenoses from the Festuco-Brometea class situated within the Lublin area, SE Poland. A considerable decrease (approx. 87%) in population density was observed. Significant variations both in the amount of pollen (18.5%–34.8 % of pollen in the total anther dry weight, i.e. 0.5–1.5 mg per 10 anthers) and in pollen viability (38.8–97.0%) were noted. Both a low amount of pollen and low pollen viability may reduce the reproductive success of individuals. The most frequent visiting insects were bees (Apoidea), including solitary bees 45.7%, honeybees 20.4%, and bumblebees 11.4%. Dipterans, coleopterans (weevils), lepidopterans and ants were also recorded, implying a strong impact of C. bononiensis on insect biodiversity within grasslands.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczą- ce aspektów kwitnienia, cech ilościowych i jakościowych pyłku Campanula bononiensis L. (Campanulaceae), gatunku objętego w Polsce ustawową ochrony. Obserwacje prowadzono latach 2007–2009, w naturalnej fitocenozie z klasy Festuco-Brometea zlokalizowanej w Lublinie. Zanotowano znaczny, ok. 87% spadek zagęszczenia populacji. Poza procesami sukcesyjnymi, prowadzącymi do zarastania murawy, zanikanie populacji C. bononiensis może być związane z wewn ętrznymi czynnikami biologicznymi, np. ilością i jakością wytwarzanego pyłku. W latach badań zanotowano znaczne wahania w ilości produkowanego pyłku (18.5%–34.8 % suchej masy pylników, tj. 0.5–1.5 mg z 10 pylników) oraz istotne zróżnicowanie jego żywotno ści (38.8-97.0%). Najczęściej obserwowanymi owadami wizytuj ącymi kwiaty były owady pszczołowate (Apoidea). Pszczoły samotnice stanowiły 45.7% ogólnej liczebno ści owadów, 20.4% wyniósł udział pszczoły miodnej, a 11.4% stanowiły różne gatunki z rodzaju Bombus. Obserwowano również muchówki, chrząszcze – ryjkowce, motyle oraz mrówki, co świadczy o dużym wpływie C. bononiensis na bioróżnorodność owadów w obrębie muraw ciepłolubnych.

Field evaluation of insect pests and pathogens associated with sesame cultivated in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria was conducted to provide baseline information on their status. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design. Herein, sesame seeds were obtained from the Jos and Maiduguri main markets. These were sown, then data were collected on insect species beginning three weeks after sowing (WAS) for six weeks and identified to species levels. At 10 WAS, plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs) were extracted from both root and soil samples in the rhizosphere of sesame, using the modified Baermann method. Plant parasitic nematodes were identified to generic level. Infected plant parts from field were thoroughly washed, disinfected and plated on PDA, and subsequently incubated at 25 ± 2 °C. Fungal pathogens were isolated, identified and checked for their viability and purity. Data obtained were subjected to both parametric and none parametric analyses. Insect species collected included Leptaulaca fissicolis, Gryllus bimaculatus, Apogonia nitidula, Trilophida conturbata, Elis sp. amongst others. A total of six genera of PPNs, Helicotylenchus, Pratylenchus, Scutellonema, Gracilacus, Meloidogyne and Tylenchus were associated with Sesame. Gracilacus and Pratylenchus had the highest population in soil (37.5%) and roots (37.5%). Three fungal isolates, namely, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium solani and Trichoderma sp, were consistently isolated from the plant parts - with Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium solani being pathogenic. Knowledge of these insect pests and pathogens will aid in their management.

Tuberolachnus salignus is a cosmopolitan aphid that predominantly feeds on the willow. It can be an economically im-portant pest of this plant. The aim of the study was to present the thematic scope of the literature on this species in Poland and in the world. The typical issues related to aphid biology (life cycle, nutrition, distribution) and its potential harmfulness are consid-ered. Additionally, aphid genetics, dyes, natural enemies, indirect influence on the soil environment as well as the use of this insect species in research on plant physiology are taken into account. It was found that in recent years, the studies on giant willow aphid have been mainly motivated by the potential utilisation of the results in the protection of willow against this aphid. Despite a wide range of topics, the publications collected in the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases are not sufficient sources of in-formation about this species. The available data must be supple-mented and updated using modern research methods. The experi-ments and observations should consider the direct and indirect relationships of T. salignus with other organisms and the environment.

The present study aimed to investigate whether adult males could fertilize immature female pupae in the leek (L1) and tobacco-associated (T) Thrips tabaci lineages and to investigate the potential effects of mother to son inbreeding on the appearance of deuterotokous females in the T lineage. To confirm the pupal insemination, a single female pupa was exposed to a single adult male for 24 hours. The removal of a male from the tube that contained the female pupa was made before the female pupa emerged to adulthood. Emerged female adults were isolated and reared individually and the sex of their progeny was determined in the larval stages. To examine a mother and son inbreeding, a single female adult was exposed to her son for 48 hours, and for two consecutive generations, the mode of reproduction was determined by identifying the sex of the progeny. This result showed that pupal insemination was not successful; thus, all the tested females produced only male progeny. Virgin inbred females produced both male and female progeny that refers to deuterotokous reproduction mode. Three virgin females produced a total of 20 females and 75 males in two consecutive generations. A study concluded that deuterotokous mode of reproduction is not a persistent mode of reproduction in the T lineage but is a result of irregularity in the mode of reproduction, and it might be changed because of brother and sister inbreeding and need further studies.
