- The Dane Ingeborg von Stemann (1889-1973) took a genuine interest in Poland’s fate. She familiarised herself with the history of the Polish nation, was fascinated by Polish culture and learned the language. Poznań, an intellectual centre, developed a fruitful scientific and political cooperation with Denmark and Sweden in the 19th century. As a result of this cooperation, courses in Scandinavian languages were initiated after Poland regained independence in 1918 and the University of Poznań was founded in 1919. Ingeborg von Stemann, who rendered great services to independent Poland, was appointed the first instructor of Scandinavian languages at Poznań University in 1920.
