Opis:
Ever since information was first operationalized by library science into consumer formats, media bias has been studied from the purview of information gatekeepers who decide what, how, and when to publish based on story importance and factors like circulation. This concept did not include individuals or entities outside of the journalism discipline. With the advent of the internet and a number of social media networks that soon followed, individuals could more effectively release information without waiting for gatekeepers, thus shaping the public’s perception regardless of the topic. Scholars offered a theoretical framework for shaping the public’s opinion and still other scholars focused on how information could be slanted or partisan. However, these seminal approaches did not operationalize the term information bias in terms of the overall partiality of major sources themselves. Information evaluation tests such as the Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose (CRAAP) and Stop, Investigate, Find, Trace (SIFT) that have been discussed as tools to assess information for bias fall short on the very first step of what to inspect and how to sort. With a gap in the literature sorting through the types of biases can be daunting and confusing. The purpose of this paper is to propose one initial method as the first step to sort information bias regardless of its form, analog or digital, into seven prominent sources each with their own inherent but larger impartiality tied to it. The sources of all information bias to be discussed in alphabetical order are: 1) academic, 2) forprofit, 3) government, 4) hidden agenda, 5) individuals, 6) nonprofit, and 7) watchdog groups.

Opis:
In this paper, a class of estimators is considered for estimating the mean of the finite population utilizing available incomplete multi-auxiliary information. Some special cases of this class of estimators are considered. The approximate expressions for bias and mean square error of the suggested estimators have also been derived and theoretical results are numerically supported.

Opis:
The present article deals with selected attitudes of market participants with respect to information gaps in real estate market. Real estate markets have recently become “active players” on an international scale. This situation leads to a careful observation of phenomena that occur on real estate markets. Nonetheless, information gaps prevent the smooth functioning of the markets in which information serves as a source of many processes. The lack of reliable, complete and current information about real estate prices makes market entities prone to search for the prices and succumb to substitute strategies that compensate the information gaps. The thesis of the present article concentrates on information gaps in the real estate market as favourable conditions for occurring the phenomenon of social influence. The hypothesis was formulated as follows: informational conformity as a factor affecting real estate price. The paper consists of two integral parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part concentrates on the phenomenon of social influence on real estate market which results from information gaps. Furthermore, the concept of social influence has been explained in detail. The phenomenon of social influence is defined as a situation in which entities lack proper knowledge how to react, what decision to take or what position to adopt in a particular contention, thus those entities depend on other people’s knowledge assuming that they know how to behave or that their knowledge is more accurate. As a result, the afore-mentioned entities copy behaviour noticed in others. Moreover, in the theoretical part the concepts of self-attribution bias and heuristic availability have been presented as well as their importance in the system of real estate market. The aim of the practical part was to verify whether the participants of real estate market were influenced by informational conformity. The research was conducted among the students of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn and Kielce School of Economics, Tourism and Social Sciences. The subject matter was to verify prices of commercial and residential properties in Olsztyn and Kielce and price trends in those markets. In a planned experiment students worked in groups of six (one leader and five participants). Each team was to persuade a leader to accept the price of a particular property and to design a market trend according to the belief of the group. An opinion survey was used as a tool of research. The undertaken study allowed to achieve the research aim and confirm the research hypothesis. The most important conclusions are as follows: information gaps in real estate market contribute to emerging the phenomenon of informational conformity, which is not indifferent to real estate prices and decisions of market participants. Taking into consideration the specificity of the real estate market and the occurrence of other bahavioural factors, a tendency among entities to follow the fo

Opis:
This paper proposes estimator of population variance using information on known parameters of auxiliary variable. The variances of the proposed estimators are obtained. It has been shown that using modified sampling fraction the proposed estimators are more efficient than the usual unbiased estimator of population variance and usual ratio estimator for population variance under certain given conditions. Empirical study is also carried out to demonstrate the merits of the proposed estimators of population variance over other estimators considered in this paper.

Opis:
Traditional estimation of poverty and inequality indicators, such as the Gini coefficient, for regions does not currently use auxiliary information or models fitted to income survey data. A predictor-type estimator constructed from ordinary mixed model predictions is not necessarily useful, as the predictions have too small spread for estimation of income statistics. Ordinary bias corrections are aimed at correcting the expectation of predictions, but poverty indicators would not be affected at all by a correction involving multiplication of predictions. We need a method improving the shape of the distribution of predictions, as poverty indicators describe differences of income between people. We therefore introduce a transformation bringing the percentiles of transformed predictions closer to the percentiles of sample values. The experiments show that the transformation results in smaller MSE of a predictor. If unit-level data from population are not available, the marginal domain frequencies of qualitative auxiliary variables can be successfully incorporated into a new calibration-based predictor-type estimator. The results are based on design-based simulation experiments where we use a population generated from an EU-wide income survey. The study is a part of the AMELI project funded by the European Union under the Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7).

Opis:
Each epoch has its own technology that defines it. Nowadays these are microprocessor-based digital devices. Technological advancement enforces changes in communication methods, which in turn triggers a number of new phenomena. Another important feature that additionally distinguishes the present times are solutions based on algorithms and artificial intelligence effectively used by websites (search engines, social media), increasingly growing into the position of “non-human” partners in interaction and as sources of knowledge about the world. The author focuses on problems and social consequences of digital communication, aiming to strengthen critical attitudes towards digital technologies – often perceived as “transparent” and therefore used uncritically. Particular attention is paid to phenomena which according to the author constitute an example of information paradox which arises as a result of simplified and automated digital communication tools. In this context the text discusses: information overload, solutions based on the system of black box, changes in bonding processes and in social experiencing of certain rituals.

Opis:
A problem related to the estimation of population mean on the current occasion using two-phase successive (rotation) sampling on two occasions has been considered. Two-phase ratio, regression and chain-type estimators for estimating the population mean on current (second) occasion have been proposed. Properties of the proposed estimators have been studied and their respective optimum replacement policies are discussed. Estimators are compared with the sample mean estimator, when there is no matching and the natural optimum estimator, which is a linear combination of the means of the matched and unmatched portions of the sample on the current occasion. Results are demonstrated through empirical means of comparison and suitable recommendations are made.
