Opis:
Influenza A viruses of all subtypes, in their low pathogenic state, form part of the natural microbiota of water bird species. Four intercontinental transmission waves of Goose/Guangdong H5 lineage viruses swept the globe since 2005, each characterized by epidemics in poultry and contact transmission to humans. A significant shift in ecology of avian influenza had occurred. The risks that columbids pose in the ecology and epidemiology of AI have been thoroughly investigated over the course of several decades. Cumulatively, the studies on free-living pigeons, market pigeons and those experimentally infected with LPAI and HPAI demonstrated, that pigeons were of no epidemiological significance in the transmission and spread of HPAI to humans.

Introduction and aim. Although increasing vaccination rates among healthcare workers (HCWs) is crucial for protecting their own health and preventing the spread of infections to patients, vaccination rates remain low. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of healthcare workers concerning seasonal influenza vaccination in a training and research hospital in Türkiye. Material and methods. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 364 healthcare workers working in a training and research hospital in Ankara, Türkiye. A face-to-face questionnaire was completed by selected participants that included questions about their sociodemographic characteristics, receiving seasonal influenza vaccination, reasons for not receiving vaccination, attitudes and behavior towards seasonal influenza vaccination recommendations for their surroundings, knowledge of who should get the vaccine, and their immunization history. Results. Among the participants, 58.5% stated that they had never received an influenza vaccination, 35.7% mentioned not receiving the regular influenza vaccination, and only 5.8% reported receiving the influenza vaccination regularly every year. Reasons for not getting vaccinated included not trusting the influenza vaccine’s protection (60.1%), not believing they are in the risk group (38.9%), and not finding a suitable time to get vaccinated (36.1%). A total of 57.1% of the healthcare workers recommended the influenza vaccine for their surroundings. Conclusion. Influenza vaccination rates among healthcare workers are quite low. To maximize influenza vaccine uptake, awareness programs are needed to correct the misconceptions health care workers have about the vaccine, and diverse strategies should be implemented to encourage them to get vaccinated, thereby promoting influenza vaccination.

Opis:
The aftermath of influenza infection is determined by a complex set of host-pathogen interactions, where genomic variability on both viral and host sides influences the final outcome. Although there exists large body of literature describing influenza virus variability, only a very small fraction covers the issue of host variance. The goal of this review is to explore the variability of host genes responsible for host-pathogen interactions, paying particular attention to genes responsible for the presence of sialylated glycans in the host endothelial membrane, mucus, genes used by viral immune escape mechanisms, and genes particularly expressed after vaccination, since they are more likely to have a direct influence on the infection outcome.

The first human cases of infections with entire avian influenza strain were caused by subtype A/H5N1/ and occurred in 1997 in Hong Kong. Since this year until 27 March 2007 World Health Organization confirmed over 370 human cases of infections with avian influenza and almost 160 persons died due to this pathogen. At present there is known that person to person transmission of avian influenza virus is limited. Nevertheless, it is possible that with time virus will adapt to human sufficiently to be able to cause next influenza pandemic. Despite intensive studies and global influenza surveillance there is no possible to predict when pandemic will begin and what kind of virus will cause this outbreak.

Opis:
Pregnancy places otherwise healthy women at an increased risk of complications arising from an influenza infection. It is suggested that physiological changes such as immunological changes, increased cardiac output and oxygen consumption, as well as lung tidal volume might increase the susceptibility to influenza complications if infection occurs during pregnancy. Immunization of pregnant women against influenza is currently recommended in many countries and has been proven to be safe and effective in reducing rates and severity of the disease in vaccinated mothers and their children. Influenza vaccination is also cost-effective. Nevertheless, influenza vaccine coverage remains low in pregnant women. This might stem from the lack of healthcare workers' education, a feeling among the general public that influenza is not a serious disease and a failure of prenatal care providers to offer the vaccine. In order to protect pregnant women and infants from influenza related morbidity and mortality an educational programme targeting healthcare workers in charge of pregnant women should be implemented.

Under the reign of King Louis-Philippe, 1830-1848, France was severely visited by a number of epidemics, namely, influenza, which were regularly reported in the press. Although the effects of such epidemics were methodically undervalued, the flu was frequently caricatured as offering analogies with the political, social and cultural life of the time. It was often endowed with the characteristics of a rational being, she-devil, woman of distinction or termagant of a wife! In 1858, Cham will even call it “the lioness of the day”. The flu will be found congenial with such social assemblies as carnivals or balls, which it either disrupted or embellished. The present paper deals with the satirical purport of the flu, whether underrated or exaggerated, showing at the same time how it became typified as a “mal à la mode” akin to Physiologies, a widely-discussed topic at that time.

Opis:
Influenza is an acute infectious disease of the airways that occurs in every age group. The course of the disease may have a different severity and clinical picture, from asymptomatic to severe with symptoms of respiratory failure. The possibilities of pandemic infections and serious complications throughout the course of influenza distinguish it from other viral respiratory diseases, prompting us to treat it in a special way. Diagnosis of the disease is usually clinical in nature, and additional studies may be helpful in clinically relevant cases. The drug recommended for treatment and chemoprophylaxis is oseltamivir. Clinical benefits are greatest if treatment starts as early as possible, within 48 hours of the first symptoms of influenza. Clinical studies indicate that early treatment with oseltamivir may shorten the duration of the disease and reduce the risk of its complications. Annual influenza vaccination is the most effective method of preventing this disease, and the only contraindication to vaccination is the occurrence of an anaphylactic or other severe allergic reaction after a previous vaccination

Media masowe wspomagają środowisko medyczne w procesach społecznych skutkujących medykalizacją. Tematy zdrowia i choroby przedstawiane są często w kategoriach społeczeństwa ryzyka i kultury strachu. Artykuł analizuje ekspozycję „świńskiej grypy” w mediach polskich w czasie trwania, ogłoszonej przez Światową Organizację Zdrowia (WHO) w latach 2009–2010, pandemii grypy wywołanej wirusem A/H1N1. Media masowe uczyniły informacje o grypie tematem dnia (agenda-setting), budując przekonanie odbiorców o ważności problemu i wywierając wpływ na opinie, postawy i zachowanie ludzi.
Mass media supports the health care industry in a way that results in medicalization. Health topics are often presented in terms of societal risks, creating a culture of fear. This paper analyzes the exposition of swine flu (caused by the AH1N1 virus) in the Polish media during the pandemic promulgated by the World Health Organization in 2009–2010. The mass media made the swine flu the news of the day (agenda-setting), building in the audience the belief that the problem was serious and influencing their opinions, attitudes and behaviours towards it. The mass media, through its specific way of presenting information about the swine influenza, contributed to building an atmosphere of fear and a sense of threat to society. In later stages, the topic of the news turned to a strategy of prevention and holding accountable those responsible for the epidemic which was deemed to present such a danger to public health.

Opis:
Here, an emerging, threatening disease, influenza in dogs, is presented. Like other mammalian influenza viruses, canine influenza virus (CIV), causes an acute respiratory infection. There is no season for this disease and infections can occur any time of the year. Dogs have acquired two influenza viruses since 1999. Canine influenza H3N8 virus is thought to develop from an equine H3N8 strain, whereas canine H3N2 influenza virus most likely arose through the direct transfer of an avian influenza virus from birds. The H3N8 CIV has only been reported in dogs, whereas the H3N2 CIV has caused clinical cases in dogs and cats in Asia, and antibodies to this virus have been found in both species. Almost all dogs exposed to canine influenza virus become infected, with approximately 80% developing clinical signs of disease. Some dogs have asymptomatic infections, while some have severe illness, however death cases due to CIV infection are rare. Fatal H3N8 cases in racing greyhounds were often characterized by hemorrhages in the lungs, mediastinum and pleural cavity. Severe hemorrhagic, cranio-ventral broncho-interstitial pneumonia was reported in most fatal cases of canine H3N2 influenza in naturally infected dogs from Asia. Experimentally infected dogs also had signs of pneumonia with multifocal to coalescing reddish consolidation, edema and hemorrhages in the lungs. No lesions were found outside the respiratory tract. The majority of infected dogs have the mild form of canine influenza. The approximately 20% of infected animals that do not exhibit clinical signs of disease can still shed the virus. The diagnosis is performed by serological methods, with hemagglutination inhibition (HI) as the test of choice, and by molecular methods as RT-PCR. Treatment is supportive, and often includes antibiotics to control secondary bacterial infections. Vaccines for canine influenza are available in some areas. Infection control measures include isolation of infected animals, cleaning and disinfection of cages, bowls and other fomites, and hygiene measures.

BackgroundInfluenza vaccinations are recommended for medical staff as an effective and safe form of preventing influenza and its complications. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of selected educational and information interventions on the influenza vaccination coverage (IVC) in nursing personnel and their attitude towards this procedure.Material and MethodsThe study participants (N = 320) were randomly divided into 4 groups. Group 1 participated in stationary training, whereas group 2 participated in distance learning. Additionally, 2 subgroups were established in each of the groups above: 1 subgroup received a reminder about the vaccination in the form of a short text message, and the other group did not receive any such reminder. The IVC rate in each group was determined; the attitude towards influenza vaccination was measured using the health belief model.ResultsThe highest IVC was obtained after stationary training followed by a reminder in the form of a short test message (36%). The reminder significantly affected IVC in the group attending stationary training (p < 0.05, OR = 2.5, 95% CI: 1.16–5.58); however, it had no impact on the IVC in the group participating in distance learning (p > 0.05, OR = 1.2, 95% CI: 0.51–2.83). Both stationary training and distance learning positively influenced the attitude towards influenza vaccinations. A major change in attitudes towards influenza vaccinations was observed only in the case of stationary training followed by a reminder in the form of a short text message (positive changes in perceived susceptibility and severity took place, perceived vaccination benefits increased, and perceived barriers were reduced).ConclusionsStationary training followed by a reminder in the form of a short text message is more effective in increasing the IVC rate compared to distance learning. It also promotes positive changes in attitudes to this prophylactic procedure, which is why it should be recommended for wider implementation.

To the issue of the ecology of environmental focal diseases (conceptual-analytical study) There was conducted the scientific-analytical study on the problem of the ecology of environmental focal diseases. Substantiated on the modern data of molecular biology, virology, immunology and epidemiology, the authors suggests that the origin of biogenetic interspecies associations are based on the sapronotic nature of influenza virus, particularly. On the preadaptive stage of migration process there are stimulated the occurrence of the variants whereas the water birds and mammalians, including humans, are susceptible. The development of the measures preventing reassociation is a base of the prevention of this viral infection in the future.
