Opis:
This paper examines the relationship between industry competitiveness and common stock returns of twenty listed firms of the Colombo Stock Exchange. The Herfindahl (1950) H index is extended to include the variance of cross sectional earnings dispersion that accounts for the relative competition of an industry. The regression results show that the industry competitiveness is unrelated to common stock returns when the extended H index is included in the regression specification as a common factor. Although the overall market factor (i.e. market return) remains statistically significant, coefficients of extended H index together with two other controlled factors become statistically insignificant in the regression. These findings suggest that the risk pertaining to industry competition is not priced as it could be diversified away by the appropriately managed value chain of the individual firms and, as such, no compensation for the risk of industry competition is demanded.

Opis:
Within the era of automated mass production, the consumers are not limited with regards to choice of products. Equally, the contradiction between productivity and production flexibility is still to be sorted. Usage of current manufacturing processes and flexible reaction for individualized customer needs do not support maintaining the effective and profitable production. Therefore, we have to transform the manufacturing processes. In Germany, this change is associated with “Industry 4.0” initiative, in other countries “reindustrialization” or “advanced production” is in use. Both of these concepts describe the manufacturing processes of next generation, which based on communication technology, software and detectors, will connect digital and virtual with real production world. Their goal is to use IT to create the value chain through the whole process: from the design and product development through production till maintenance and service.

In the growing economy of Iran, supply chain competitiveness (SCC) is one of the strongest tools and best solutions to the problems faced by organizations in this competitive environment. The main aim of this research is to Identifying and prioritizing contributing factors in supply chain competitiveness in footwear industry. Data were collected from 82 employees, experts and managers of Payam shoes firm and examined the impact of four different factors Including green supply chain management, supply chain partnership, sustainable approach to supplier segmentation and knowledge management process capability on supply chain competitiveness. To analyze the data and testing the proposed model in statistical phase of research, partial least squares (PLS) method, and to prioritizing contributing factors in supply chain competitiveness in operational research phase of research, BWM technique (one of the new techniques of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) methods) was used. The salient features of the proposed method, compared to the existing MCDM methods, are: (1) requiring less comparison data; (2) leading to more consistent comparisons and more reliable results. The results of statistical phase of research indicate that “supply chain partnership”, “knowledge management process capability”, “green supply chain management” and “sustainable approach in supplier selection and segmentation” have a significant positive effect on supply chain competitiveness. The results of prioritizing contributing factors in supply chain competitiveness by using BWM indicate that “supply chain partnership” is the most important factor in supply chain competitiveness and after that “knowledge management process capability” was located in second priority. Finally some practical strategies for managers are discussed and some suggestions for future research are provided.

Opis:
Research background: Food industry is of key importance to each economy due to its role in ensuring food security, balancing the labour market, as well as contributing to the economic growth and international trade. With a limited increase in demand for food in many highly developed countries, further growth in this sector of the economy will largely depend on the ability to successfully distribute manufactured goods in international markets and cope with competitive pressure from other entities. Purpose of the article: Therefore, the study attempts to assess the determinants of international competitiveness of the food industry worldwide measured by the trade balance. Methods: The research was based on data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Data Center (UNCTADStat) and the World Input-Output Database (WIOD). The time frame for the analyses was determined by the availability of internationally comparable data and thus covered the period of 2000?2014. The empirical analysis was performed with the use of panel models, while international competitiveness was measured by trade balance (net export). Findings & value added: It was proved that increasing trade openness and relative demand, as well as decreasing relative unit labour costs have a positive impact on international competitiveness of the food industry worldwide. However, the nature of the relationship between relative labour productivity and trade balance appears to be ambiguous. A stronger impact of the examined factors on net exports in the long-run rather than the short-run was also evidenced. The novelty of our analysis is that we consider trade balance determinants of the food industry worldwide using panel models, whereas most of the existing studies focus either on one or a narrow group of countries.

A study was carried out to determine the level of competitiveness of the furniture industry in selected EU countries, using result-oriented indicators. The analysis of international competitiveness covered individual product groups, which allowed investigation of the situation of not only the entire furniture industry, but also its particular branches. The research showed that Poland and Italy have achieved the highest comparative advantages in trade in furniture, and in the case of the Polish furniture industry, positive development trends were observed. Germany – the largest furniture exporter in the EU – demonstrated a much lower level of competitiveness, and the significant value of furniture industry products imported to that country results in a growing foreign trade deficit. Unfavourable values of the competitiveness indicators and generally negative tendencies during the analysed period were obtained for almost all of the distinguished groups of furniture in the case of the UK, which was a net importer in this area.

The production of wood-based furniture is the final stage in the wood processing chain. Foreign trade in furniture indicates the success of the sector and its competitiveness on international markets. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the trade competitiveness, and its trend, in the furniture manufacturing industry in both the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic for a period of ten years, through the implementation of indicators based on industry foreign trade data and using mathematical and statistical methods. A system of indicators was set up and the hypothesis: “In the furniture industry the competitive potential is used insufficiently” was proposed. The results achieved confirmed the hypothesis, however, despite the furniture industry showing an active foreign trade balance, it contributed little to the country’s trade balance surplus and low values of the indicators of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) were achieved. Therefore, the industry gradually loses its competitive ability.

Opis:
The challenges faced by the chemical industry in Europe result from the need of being competitive. Prices of raw materials and rapidly increasing number of environmental regulations considerably influence the costs covered by the European entrepreneurs. In the context of climate policy and related regulations, we should remember that without considering the global conditions, the EU can squander its chances offered by the European chemical industry - it is clean production and safe workplaces. For the development of Polish chemical industry, in addition to adequate EU regulations, their implementation at national level is extremely important, e.g. regarding ETS, this is related to an issue of compensations for indirect emissions and allocating at least 50% of funds from auctioning to pro-ecological projects, liberalisation of energy market, particularly gas, or exemption from excise duty on synthesis gas from 1st November 2013.

The paper focuses on the definition of innovation and innovation process from the historical and today’s perspective of the Massag engineering company. In order to analyse the innovation process, a SWOT analysis was performed, and, based on the results obtained, the correlation between the results of the analysis and the statistics of innovation activities in the Czech Republic was made. Within the historical analysis of the company, key innovation milestones were identified and described. The main finding was the combination of the use of different types of innovation activities, which plays an important role in terms of the access to innovations and it is necessary to take innovation as a whole, composed of sub-types of innovation that permeate the whole society. The results of the SWOT analysis showed that the main factor that affects the success of the organization and innovation is the long history of the company and knowledge of the markets. This is reflected in the long-term and quality customer relationships. These established contacts with other companies engaged in engineering production are strengths, which are today reflected in the opportunities for further development of the company. The correlation between results and statistics shows that SMEs are forced to innovate because they are under constant pressure from competitors and the market. Therefore, innovation activities are essential for these companies and play a significant role in their current and future competitiveness.
