Opis:
In this paper, a high performance, configurable, compact hardware architecture for computing the histogram of oriented gradients (HoG) descriptors is presented. The descriptor computation algorithm is simplified w.r.t. to the original solution, enabling hardware resource cost reduction with only a small accuracy penalty. The proposed architecture can be accommodated to different block sizes and different block grid configurations, enabling its use in a wide range of object detection and recognition tasks with varying region of interest sizes. The resulting architecture is systolic and massively parallel, enabling high throughput processing.

Ant colony optimization (stocktickerACO) is a meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by food searching behavior of real ants. Recently stocktickerACO has been widely used in digital image processing. When artificial ants move in a discrete habitat like an image, they deposit pheromone in their prior position. Simultaneously, vaporizing of pheromone in each iteration step avoids from falling in the local minima trap. Iris recognition because of its great dependability and non-invasion has various applications. simulation results demonstrate stocktickerACO algorithm can effectively extract the iris texture. Also it is not sensitive to nuisance factors. Moreover, stocktickerACO in this research preserves details of the various synthetic and real images. Performance of ACO in iris segmentation is compared with operation of traditional approaches such as canny, robert, and sobel edge detections. Experimental results reveal high quality and quite promising of stocktickerACO to segment images with irregular and complex structures.

Detecting defects in adhesively bonded joints, using active thermography methods is very promising NDT testing method. In many cases, tests are made with agreed conditions, where a test object is always in specific place of IR camera view. Although, for needs of industry, system should be able to adjust Region of Interest in order to prevailing conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to develop appropriate method for this task. The paper describe one of the easiest attempt to separate foreground of an IR image sequence acquired by Lock-In Thermography (LT) and Pulse Thermography (PT). Proposed approach is based on segmentation and morphological operations. The IR image sequences of 11 various samples were used for this task. Obtained results show that elaborated technique of foreground object extraction is possible.

In this paper we present two methods of binarization of corneal endothelial images. The binarization is a first step of advanced image analysis. Images of corneal endothelial obtained by the specular microscopy have a poor dynamic range and they are usually non-uniformly illuminated. The binarization endothelial images is not trivial. Two binarization algorithms are proposed. The output images are presented. The quality of algorithms is discussed.

A watershed-based region growing image segmentation algorithm requires a fast watershed-based dilation implementation for effective operation. This paper presents a new way for watershed image representation and uses this representation for effective implementation of dilation. Methods for improving the algorithm speed are discussed. The paper presents a computer vision technique developed for automated reading of analogue gauge meters. The system utilizes a mobile phone digital camera for image stream capturing and the Hough transform supplemented by multiply histogram analysis for locating a pointer position and parallax effect correction. The system is capable of working with minimal user supervision and its indicator position detection uncertainty is superior to that provided by a human eye. An attempt to use the algorithm implementation for semi-automatic calibration of an analogue voltmeter is also presented.

Arc welding is commonly applied in industry. Assessment of the quality of welded joints is one of crucial tasks especially in automated applications. In the paper preliminary research devoted to the evaluation of Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) properties using method of tracking of defined Region of Interest (ROI) on infrared images continuously acquired during welding process. The proposed method can be useful to detection of welding instabilities as well as welded joint defects.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease that manifests itself by joint inflammation, swelling, pain, tenderness and may involve extra-articular organs in severe cases. Joint inflammatory lesions are associated with higher temperature due to increased vascularity in the area of inflamed tissues. This papers aimed to identify heat patterns from ROIs to interpret the presence of inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis patients. The thermovisual image sequences were collected from 65 patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Infrared images were generated by a thermal scanning camera (FLIR E60bx Systems Inc., USA). Separate recordings of left and right foot temperature changes were performed for 3 minute periods. The temperature measurement was performed at the moment right after cold water immersion (post-cooling temperature) and at the moment after thermal recovery (post-recovery temperature). The recording of 3-minute foot thermal recovery was used for analysis. Automatically identified ROI corresponds to the area of the soft tissues covering cuboid and navicular bone.

This paper presents an algorithm for restoring telescope images corrupted by turbulence effects and readout noise of a telescope system in order to determine centroid positions of stars, especially the position of a reference star. A computation method employing an accurate centroid estimation algorithm reconstructing a point spread function (PSF) from the recorded astronomical images has been used. Minimisation of turbulence effects and telescope control system noise in long exposure images acquired and recorded by the ground telescope is proposed. As a solution of the distortion error a minimisation signal is dedicated to GoTo calibration procedures built in control mechanisms of the electromechanical telescope system. The proposed method has been verified in the Matlab environment for real deep sky images recorded by the ground telescope system.

A visual navigation system with a simple pattern matching algorithm was designed and analyzed. A video camera is the system main sensor for image acquisition. It is supported by magnetic compass. A Scene Matching Area Correlation (SMAC) method based on a cross correlation technique is implemented for image processing. The system was tested both in off-line simulations and on-board of a land vehicle. A GPS receiver was used for system calibration and as a source exact position coordinates. The efficiency of the signal processing algorithm during the field tests confirmed efficiency of the methods developed for determination of vehicle position and velocity. A visual navigation system based on simple image processing techniques may be applied on board mobile vehicles in an autonomous way or as a component of integrated navigation system.

The article presents the preliminary concept of facial emotion recognition system. The approach focuses on the feature extraction and selection process which simplifies the stage of defining and adding new elements to the feature set. The evaluation of the system was performed with two discriminant analysis classifiers, decision tree classifier and four variants of k-nearest neighbors classifier. The system recognizes seven emotions. The verification step utilizes two databases of face images representing laboratory and natural conditions. Personal and interpersonal emotion recognitin was evaluated. The best quality of classification for personal emotion recognition was achieved by 1NN classifier, the recognition rate was 99.9% for the laboratory conditions and 97.3 for natural conditions. For interpersonal emotion recognition the rate was 82.5%.

Glucose concentration measurement is essential for diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of various medical conditions like diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, etc. This paper presents a novel image-processing and machine learning based approach for glucose concentration measurement. Experimentation based on Glucose oxidase - peroxidase (GOD/POD) method has been performed to create the database. Glucose in the sample reacts with the reagent wherein the concentration of glucose is detected using colorimetric principle. Colour intensity thus produced, is proportional to the glucose concentration and varies at different levels. Existing clinical chemistry analyzers use spectrophotometry to estimate the glucose level of the sample. Instead, this developed system uses simplified hardware arrangement and estimates glucose concentration by capturing the image of the sample. After further processing, its Saturation (S) and Luminance (Y) values are extracted from the captured image. Linear regression based machine learning algorithm is used for training the dataset consists of saturation and luminance values of images at different concentration levels. Integration of machine learning provides the benefit of improved accuracy and predictability in determining glucose level. The detection of glucose concentrations in the range of 10–400 mg/dl has been evaluated. The results of the developed system were verified with the currently used spectrophotometry based Trace40 clinical chemistry analyzer. The deviation of the estimated values from the actual values was found to be around 2-3%.

A novel feature extraction method has been proposed to improve the accuracy of the pineapple ripeness classification process. The methodology consists of six stages, namely: image acquisition, image pre-processing, color extraction, feature selection, classification and evaluation of results. The red element in the RGB model is selected as the threshold value parameter. The ripeness of pineapples is determined based on the percentage share of yellowish scales visible in images presenting the front and the back side of the fruit. The prototype system is capable of classifying pineap ples into three main groups: unripe, ripe, and fully ripe. The accuracy of 86.05% has been achieved during experiments.
