Illness, especially sudden and chronic, is not a problem just a sick person. Experiencing the whole family and it is always an event the entire family system. This can cause significant changes in its structure and functioning. There are restrictions normal activities, family or professional. Followed by the need to take new actions related to submission to the healthcare system. The disease requires learning new unknown function, especially nursing. It also causes the abandonment of certain goals in life, or to modify them. There is no doubt that the demands placed on the family adaptation to the disease are an important source of stress.

The article explores the problem of reconstructing the experience of illness based on the narratives of people with mental disease. The research used the method of biographical interviews. The material consists of 16 biographical narratives of Dr J. Babiński Clinical Hospital patients. Their accounts form a coherent image of suffering caused by the illness included experiences preceding the disease, somatic symptoms, admission, and stay in the hospital. Thanks to the collected narratives, we have the opportunity to learn about the subjective experiences from the patient’s perspective, which is not present in the literature on psychopathology.

In the present article I examine autobiographical works in which writers reveal their illnesses. I am interested not so much in the description of a givenailment, but rather in the embroilment resulting from being ill and from the persistent conflict between memory and forgetting. Becoming aware of the illness  turns out to be a critical point, forcing the writers to re-evaluate their own lives. Consequently, memory and forgetting assume a new status. I also attempt to juxtapose the universal nature of being ill and the intimacy of this experience; I point out the similarities and differences involved in dealing with illnesses, the common denominator of which seems to be the necessity of confronting the limits of memory and the expansiveness of forgetting.

Opis:
At the beginning the paper introduces the role of patient and the four features of the role, as formulated by T. Parsons and E. Freidson in their sociology works. Based on this concept of the role of the patient, the text argues in favour of recognising the mental illness as a real illness. (This recognition is not obvious and is often disputed.) Next, the paper explains the phenomenon of prejudices, and how they are formed. It is related to the stereotypes and the process of categorisation, and therefore the work presents these terms as well. Some specific examples of prejudice both against the mentally ill and psychiatry as such are also introduced. In the last chapter, the issue of stigma and stigmatisation related to the mental illness is presented. The focus is made on the etymology of the word “stigma” and its current use. The paper aims at clarifying the social status of the mentally ill, who suffer not only from their disease, but also from the above mentioned negative social phenomena such as prejudices and stigmatisation.

The situation of an illness is often interpreted as an adverse change in a person’s situation, which is connected to various kinds of burdens like pain, reliance on the healthcare system, hospitalisation, and psychological stress. When analysing the situation of a patient, scrutiny of their spiritual situation through which human intentionality and hence the striving for meaning, value and purpose is manifest, seems called for. This presentation will introduce the empirical and axiological framework of the experience of cancer and the search for its meaning expressed through the performing arts, where people with cancer become playwrights and actors. The studies were conducted among the mentees of the Fight Cancer Academy in Toruń. The researchmethodology entailed textual analysis and a panel interview. Based on the results obtained, we compare the patients’ image of the disease, along with the meanings they attribute to it, with the image of the disease within a wider, cultural discourse.

The aim of this article is to show the influence of witches, demons, ghosts, and gods on human health in Ancient Mesopotamia. Mesopotamian medicine was based on magic and considered illness to be the work of a supernatural power. Ashu and ashipu – doctors of body and soul – worked together to diagnose and help the patient. Sometimes prayers and magical rituals were necessary for a patient to get well; often, only a herbal mixture was needed. Mesopotamian magical and medical texts describe many kinds of diseases: somatic, mental, and others. Among these are: fever, headaches, leprosy, epilepsy, blindness, impotency, paralysis. This article is an effort to analyse Mesopotamian prescriptions, incantations, and medical interventions and to answer questions about the health of ancient mankind.

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the degree of acceptance of the disease and the level of satisfaction with life among people with diagnosed hypertension. The research was carried out by means of a diagnostic survey. The study used the scale of AIS - Approval Illness Scale (Acceptance of Illness Scale). For measuring life satisfaction ladder Cantrill was used. It assessed satisfaction with life on a scale from 0 to 10. The study was conducted in June 2014 among the residents of Lubelskie and Świętokrzyskie voivodships. The study was anonymous. The approval of the Bioethics Committee at the Medical University of Lublin (KE-0254/176/2014) was received for carrying out the tests. The study included patients diagnosed with hypertension – total of 154 people. The study has shown the average degree of acceptance of the disease. Illness and healing therapy did not impact negatively the functioning of most respondents. The respondents described their adaptation to the limitations imposed by the disease in different degrees. The vast majority of respondents did not have any problems arising from the disease and did not abandon their favorite activities. Every third respondent with hypertension felt as being a defective person and dependent on other people. The relation between satisfaction with their own lives, and the level of acceptance of the disease was concluded in that study. The higher the degree of satisfaction with patients’ lives, the higher the acceptance of illness. Studies have shown positive correlations between gender, age, place of residence, duration of illness and education, and acceptance of the disease. In contrast, there was no statistically significant association between marital status and the test subject.

The purpose of the article. The aim of the study was to calculate and evaluate the costs of employee sickness absence in European countries over the period 2006–2020. An additional objective was to analyse the sensitivity of the development of absenteeism costs depending on the changing level of the discount rate used in economic evaluation analyses. Methodology. The estimation and subsequent assessment of absenteeism of working-age people costs was based on human-capital approach and was carried out retrospectively using the morbidity, top-down approach, based on aggregated epidemiological data. As a measure of production loss volume, GDP per working person was adopted. Results of the research. The study indicated that there is variation in the cost of sickness absence across European countries, but no clustering relationship was identified from a geographic perspective. In addition, SACS is in the range of 1,9% – 2,1% in all countries in 2006 prices.

Objective. The aim of the study is to compare the hope of rural and urban inhabitants in the terminal stage of a neoplastic disease covered by stationary hospice care. Materials and method. The study was carried out among patients in the terminal phase of a neoplastic disease. They were patients of both 24-hour and daily palliative and hospice care units throughout the country. The study group consisted of 246 patients, average age – 59.5, the youngest respondent was 18 and the oldest – 90. The B. L. Block (NCN-36) test, prepared for people struggling with serious life-threatening diseases, was used. Comparison of the results with regard to the place of residence was based on the test Friedman ANOVA and Kendall compatibility factor. The general comparison of hope in individual dimensions and globally with the division into the degree of urbanization, was based on the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results. On the basis of factor analysis, 4 scales constructed from 8 items branch were distinguished. The following scales are used to study hope in the situational dimension – health, the telek-temporal dimension – goals, the spiritual dimension – religious beliefs and in the emotional-affective (affective) dimension – motivations. Conclusions. The strength of hope in people in the terminal phase of cancer, residing in villages, settlements, small, medium and large cities, was similar and depended on its magnitude. Of all the manifestations of hope, the greatest variation in results occurred in the subjects when they encountered serious problems and difficulties. The inhabitants of medium-sized cities were characterized by a higher hope at that time.

The problem of loneliness has become more and more common in society. It affects the family which is a place of physical and spiritual closeness. A child’s isolation in the family is related to many factors. It may be caused by the parents’ emotional indifference or the child’s serious illness. The disturbances may be painful for the child who often cannot fight the sense of isolation. Attempts to counteract the sense of loneliness are connected with pedagogical action. It should be based on permanent values which extend the scope of support offered to the family. Strengthening the family system makes it possible to overcome the child’s sense of loneliness.

Opis:
In the past peasant families did not regard health as a value in itself. The low ‘cultural status' of health was associated with the constant threat to it, the frailty of life and poverty which, as peasant diarist wrote, ‘did not let one live’. ‘Plague, war, and famine’ would decimate the village population for centuries, and these people were help-less in the face of epidemic and natural disasters. For that reason death was treated as familiar part of the trajectory of human life, natural and indisputable.A feature of folk culture, which influences behaviors in and attitudes towards illness among the peasant population, is co-occurrence mystical-magical elements. Mystical-magical acts influenced and still influence patterns of behaviors in illness and dying process which a peasant family exhibits. For example, illness was assumed to be caused by spells, charms and magic; and the use of holy relics, amulets or talismans was believed to prevent illness. People were convinced that revelation, inspiration or clairvoyance made it easier to diagnose an illness whereas casting spells, charms, and the like would remove it effectively. In our article we will discuss typical ways of coping with illness and dying processes’, the determinants of behaviors in illness, emphasizing customs associated with illness, behavioral patterns, ways of expressing emotions, and fatalism as attitude towards illness and death. We will stress the importance of cultural and religious elements, and accentuate the special role played by women in coping with illness by using self-treatment and folk healing methods.

The aim of the study was to examine the perception of diabetes and the knowledge about this disease. Participants were divided into two groups: the first one consisted of family members of diabetic patients (56 individuals; M age = 54) whereas the second one comprised those who had no family experiences with diabetes (104 individuals; M age = 55). In order to examine the perception of diabetes modified version of IPQ-R (The Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire), enabling examination of healthy individuals was applied. Additionally, participants were to decide whether certain given information on diabetes was true or false. Participants in both groups considered diabetes as a serious chronic disease which can be successfully treated and the course of which is largely dependent on a patient’s behaviour. In both groups there were false assumptions regarding the causes of the disease and opinions discordant with medical knowledge. It would be advisable to organize educational campaigns and screening programmes for the family members. As a result, family members would be able to provide better support for the patient and could also recognize dysfunctions of their own organism early enough.

The aim of this article is to take a multifaceted approach to an illness as a biocultural phenomenon. Putting emphasis on the enormous potential that lies in narratives of one’s physical and mental condition may lead to breaking the monopoly of natural sciences in this respect. Subjective perceptions of deterioration, defects and human fragility are combined with practices leading to the textualisation of illness and building new meanings around it. In humanistic medicine, the suffering person is placed at the centre of therapeutic activities. The article offers also some reflection on the current biotechnological revolution – a great project to improve the present version of humans in an attempt to move our species to another level.
