Opis:
According to Erikson (1964, 1965), developing our individual approach to religion is a very important part of our mature and integrated identity development. The aim of the present study was to determine the connection between religiosity and identity development in adolescence. 300 students of Cracow’s high and junior high schools (including Catholic schools) filled in Polish versions of Huber’s Centrality of Religiosity Scale and Berzonsky’s Identity Style Inventory. The results confirmed the expected connection between identity styles and religiosity constructs defined as a system located in the personality of the individual. Indicators of religion correlated most positively with the normative and informational styles and negatively with the diffuse/avoidant style. Attaching weight to religion and giving it an important role in life was associated with having a more mature and adaptive identity style. Lack of interest in religion occurred in people whose identity was fragmented and nonintegrated. Some differences were noted between students of Catholic and non-Catholic schools.

Opis:
The research investigates the relationship between an individual’s social orientation and their identity style. The identity style is understood, following Berzonsky (1989), as the manner in which important life decisions are taken, including those related to one’s identity and ways of coping with everyday problems. Having anticipated differences in ways of constructing identity, decision-making, and coping with problems, the author distinguishes three identity styles: informational, normative, and diffuse-avoidant. In turn, the research in social orientations distinguishes an individualistic and a collectivistic orientation (Reykowski, 1999). They are understood as forms of mentality connected with basic intuitions and beliefs related to the question of which type of a relation between an individual and the community is proper and just. The conducted research verifi ed the existence of sex differences in the construction of identity styles and adopted social orientation, as well as the relation between an individual’s identity style and their social orientation. Berzonsky’s revised Identity Style Inventory (ISI-3) and a questionnaire for the measurement of vertical and horizontal collectivism and individualism (KIRH; Adamska, Retowski, Konarski, 2005) were used to determine an individual’s identity style and social orientation, respectively. The KIRH enabled to identify two types collectivism (vertical and horizontal) and two types of individualism. The sample consisted of 657 subjects (340 female and 317 male), between 22 and 40 years of age. The conducted analysis revealed differences between female and male subjects as regards identity styles and social orientations as well as the relation between certain identity styles and specifi c social orientations.

The factor structure of Michael D. Berzonsky’s Identity Style Inventory. How many styles are measured by ISI3?The Identity Style Inventory ISI3 developed by Michael D. Berzonsky is currently one of the most widely used measurement instruments in personality research – both in English language and Polish literature. The following paper is the Polish publication presenting the results of the study on the factor structure of identity styles as conceptualized by Berzonsky and operationalized in the ISI3 questionnaire. The study involved a total of 1995 people belonging to three developmental stages: early adolescence, late adolescence, and early adulthood. By means of confi rmatory factor analysis with parcelling, which has been used in English-language literature, the 3-factor structure of the inventory was confi rmed (similarly as in other countries). However, this paper questions the above method of analysis and proposes that it is necessary to check if the studied constructs are one-dimensional. Verifi cation conducted with the help of exploratory factor analysis and the comparison of alternative models with confi rmatory factor analysis seem to contradict the 3-factor structure. The collected empirical material appears to indicate that the diffuse-avoidant style (measured with the Polish version of the ISI3) in fact consists of two independent dimensions: the avoidant style and the diffuse-careless style.

Opis:
Identity formation is conceptualized in terms of a social‐cognitive model that postulates stylistic differences in how people negotiate or manage to evade the challenge of constructing, maintaining, and/or reconstructing their sense of identity. Some people adopt an informed, refl ective orientation to identity conflicts and questions; others take a more automatic, normative approach; whereas others procrastinate and delay identity decisions until situational demands and consequences dictate how they react. The role that general rational and automatic cognitive processes and identity processing styles play in identity formation is considered. Research that has evaluated the theoretical hypothesis according to which the linkage between rational and automatic reasoning processes and measures of identity formation is mediated by identity processing style is reviewed. The fi ndings indicated that rational and automatic cognitive processes generally did account for signifi cant variance on measures of identity formation including strength of commitment, types of selfattributes within which one’s identity was grounded, and identity status. However, the fi ndings further revealed that identity processing styles at least in part mediated most of the relationships between cognitive processes and identity formation. In all of the analyses, identity processing styles explained a greater amount of the unique variation in measures of identity formation than the cognitive variables.

Departing from the model suggested by Luyckx, Schwarz, Berzonsky et al. (2008), the relationships between identity and educational context, social participation, and identity information processing style were investigated. Participants were 972 students from six vocational schools in Poznań. The students, within these six schools, attended Grades I-III of three types of vocational schools: basic vocational schools (n=271), technical upper secondary schools (n=448), and specialized upper secondary schools (n=253). Three questionnaires were used: The Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS/PL), which measures five identity dimensions according to the concept of Luyckx, Schwarz, Berzonsky et al. (2008), Social Participation Questionnaire, developed by Brzezińska, Rękosiewicz and Hejmanowski (see Rękosiewicz, 2013b), enabling identification of the type of social participation, and the Polish adaptation of M. Berzonsky’s Identity Style Inventory 4 (ISI-4) authored by A. Senejko (2010), to examine identity styles. The results showed that the students from basic vocational schools and technical upper secondary schools were more often characterized by the normative identity style, whereas the students from specialized upper secondary schools manifested a greater tendency to engage themselves in exploration, both adaptive and ruminative.

Mimo braku prostych związków między złożonością Ja i tożsamością, analiza skupień wykazała obecność trzech grup badanych, o specyficznej konfiguracji tych zmiennych. Wyodrębnione grupy różniły się też poziomem inklinacji narracyjnej. Ja o umiarkowanej złożoności i tożsamość osiągnięta współwystę-powały z najwyższym poziomem inklinacji narracyjnej.

This article considers some normative cultural changes that have contributed to the identity “crises” faced at least by persons living in Western cultures. Identity is conceptualized as a self-structure that provides a frame of reference for processing self-relevant information, answering questions about the meaning and purpose of one’s life, and regulating the processes that individuals use to cope and adapt in everyday life. Individuals living in the modern world characterized by accelerating technological, social, and economic changes face major challenges and problems as they attempt to form and maintain a coherent sense of personal identity. Not all people, however, deal with these  identity confl icts in the same fashion. Research reveals reliable differences in how individuals negotiate or manage to avoid the tasks of constructing, maintaining, and reconstructing a sense of identity in the modern world. Three identity processing orientations are highlighted: informational, normative, and diffuse-avoidant. Although an informational processing orientation is associated with resources and skills that maximize adaptability in the modern world,  those resources do not provide a set of values or frame of reference for deciding what goals people should commit to or what they should live for. Some of values used to justify identity choices in the modern world are considered.

Since the last quarter of the 20th century, hip hop has become a cultural means of self-expression, entertainment, and empowerment for youths throughout the world. The creative manipulation of verbal and non-verbal codes has been the main vehicle through which the enormous hip hop cultural industry has been sustained and revitalized. This study investigates the creative ingenuity of a group of Naija (Nigerian) youths in Calabar, south-eastern Nigeria, in the creation of a peculiar hip hop brand in the Nigerian Hip Hop Nation (NHHN). Particularly, the study works through Appadurai’s (1996, 2002) theory on migration and the electronic media as agents of modernity to apprehend the emergence and development of hip hop in Nigeria through the example of Calabar hip hop exponents. This article also derives discursive insight from Alim’s (2009) idea of style as a major non-verbal linguistic vector of hip hop to identify and interrogate the creative ingenuity of the Nigerian youths here examined. Our study concludes that through the formation of a creative bond and the manipulation verbal and performance codes from their cultural space these Nigerian youths have established a peculiar brand of hip hop and are contributing to the transnational, multi-vocal Global Hip Hop Nation.

Opis:
After proclaiming independence in 1918, one of the most important tasks was creation of new visual-architectural and design identity which was called ‘Lithuanian Style’ or ‘National Style’. That search for a new image had to be established by an intentional, wilful act which could be able to create a desired object in accordance with the pre-planned model. Because of the multi-national origin of the artists, their distinct education in various countries (Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, etc.), and the multiculturalism of customers, the same idea of countries’ identity was realised in very different visual forms. This variety of Lithuanian interior design approaches was strived to be untangled for the first time in the scientific monograph Lithuanian Interwar Interiors 1918–1940. Meanwhile, the current article (due to the space limit) presents the idea of national tendencies in the interior design. The latter prompts the understanding that theoretical formulation of Lithuanian National Style was ultrarational, attractive, and suitable for different aesthetic tastes – above all, it truly represented various social strata and nations living in Lithuania at that time.

In the social-cognitive model of identity formation Berzonsky, (1989, 2011) distinguishes three styles of identity formation: informational, normative and diffuse-avoidant. In order to measure these three styles Berzonsky developed Identity Styles Inventory (ISI). Factorial validity of the questionnaire was usually established via Conhrmatory Factor Analysis with parceling (Crocetti, Rubini, Berzonsky, Meeus, 2009; Crocetti, Shokri, 2010; Zimmermann, Biermann-Mahaim, Mantzouranis, Genoud,Crocetti, 2012). Recently Cieciuch (2010) challenged the results obtained in those analysis and demonstrated that the diffuse-avoidant style should be treated as two-dimensional constructin Poland. In the meantime Berzonsky (2010) developed a revised version of ISI (ISI-4). We address the problem pointed out by Cieciuch (2010) in the Polish data collected with ISI-4. Exploratory and conhrmatory factor analyses, as well an inspection of the association between identity styles and both personality traits and priorities of values strongly support the necessity to split the diffuse-avoidant style measured by ISI4 in Poland into two subtypes.

W artykule przedstawiono początki poszukiwań elementów narodowych w tendencjach stylowych na przełomie XIX i XX wieku w wybranych k rajach europejskich i U SA. W drugiej połowie XIX wieku, w polemicznym dyskursie pomiędzy zwolennikami tradycjonalizmu a propagatorami nowatorskich rozwiązań, przeważyły tendencje powrotu do minionych stylów architektonicznych. „stylu swojskiego”. Trendy w manifestowaniu cech narodowych w architekturze były zauważalne w innych krajach europejskich na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, np. Heimatstil w Niemczech.
The article presents the beginnings of a search for national elements in style tendencies at the turn of the 19thand 20thcenturies in selected European countries and in the USA. In addition, the development of national style in Poland was analyzed: the history of creating and progressive changes from the 19thcentury to contemporary times. In Poland, the search for a national style was associated both in the need for manifestation of independence and the invention of a new architectural style. In the second half of the 19th century, a polemical discourse between traditionalism supporters and promoters of innovative solutions raised in which a tendency for returning to bygone architectural styles were dominant. In secular architecture, efforts were made to promote folk motifs close to the Zakopane style, and sacred architecture was supposed to become another line of gothic forms called the Vistula-Baltic style. In the second decade of the 20th century, referring to medieval forms, in particular Roman ones, and blending them with modernism were aimed at creating so-called a ‘native style’. Trends in the manifestation of national traits in architecture were noticeable in other European countries at the turn of the 19th and 20thcenturies, e.g. Heimatstil in Germany. Avant-garde variants of modernism in the form of art déco, streamline or zig-zag were an American equivalent of Western Europe modernism. Many buildings of the 1920s and 1930s are still considered symbols of architectural elegance owing to the use of high quality building materials in combination with an arrangement of unique façade articulating units. Some sort of an attempt of a manifestation of the national style are exhibition pavilions for EXPO, etc. Their forms, already in the second half of the 19th century, indicated the technical advancement, e.g. the Crystal Palace in London. Nowadays, presentations provided for visitors of EXPO seem to be more significant. However, selection of the form of a pavilion still remains an indication of a trend and a style a given country wants to be identified with. Some pavilions manifest innovative ideas of building body development, yet most of them are associated with classical architectural elements, the recognisability of which strengthens the sense of belonging to a common cultural tradition.

This article is an attempt to redefine the concept of free time in such a way as to take into account the nuances of the social determinants of adolescent leisure. Classic definitions of leisure have emphasized its disinterestedness, voluntary nature, and unproductiveness. Later researchers indicated that the issue was more complex. How people spend their free time is a derivative of their social position and cultural, social, and symbolic capital, and is also often a component of a chosen lifestyle or an element of identity. It is currently believed that how a person spends free time is also influenced by the individual’s gender, age, origin, and physical predisposition. In regard to youth leisure, the disappearance of clear divisions between work and rest time seems to be extremely important, especially in two areas: participation in extracurricular activities, and the huge role of smartphones and the Internet in the lives of young people, along with the associated “prosumption,” unregulated financial issues (making money online), and many other phenomena.

First part of the article outlines the evolution of the concept of individual style in stylistics. Second and third part point out the theoretical and methodological problems connected with the above-mentioned concept and draw attention to several possible Solutions. The radical solution consists - in the tradition of the negativistic propositions submitted by B. Gray in his book Style. The Problem and its Solution (1969) - in denying the existence of the phenomenon of individual style (Ch. Grimm, Zum Mythos Individualstil, 1991). If we want to defend the legitimacy and usefulness of the concept, we have to take into account various factors. (1) Individual style manifests itself in the whole textual production of a person, but only a part of this production can become object of research; so a complicated question arises, which texts can be considered representative. (2) The reductive approach to the individual style searches for those style traits that are specific only for the given author and tries to fdter out all the other traits. On the other hand, the complex approach conceives the individual style as a modę of selection and organization of the elements of author’s idiolect; thus, also the devices shared with other persons are considered as components of the individual style. (3) The individual style must be viewed as dynamie and changing in time.
