CITIZENSHIP AND THE POLITICS OF IDENTITY
NEW MUSLIM RELIGIOUS BROKERS
Opis:: This article is based on fieldwork carried out among the representatives of new Muslim elites in Brusseles and London. It analyzes the main changes in the public mobilization of Islam in Belgium and Great Britain which involve slow departure from the politics of Muslim identity towards the politics of Muslim citizenship. This change is related not to the increased social pressure on Muslims in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 or July 7, 2005, but rather to the development of a strong sense of citizenship among some segments of the Muslim populations in Europe, and to the construction of a new type of identity, “Muslim citizenship”. The latter is characterized by strong support for national projects, social activity going beyond Muslim symbolic boundaries, an emphasis on the right to “similarity”, and responsibilities vis-à-vis other citizens without regard for their religious affiliation.

Opis:: This article attempts to answer the question: To what extent the secularity of Europe facilitates or hinders the process of integration of immigrants from Muslim countries? The answer to this question is based on selected literature about immigrants from Muslim countries in the UK, in selected research and observation of current activities of certain Muslim institutions in England. The paper consists of three parts. The first part is devoted to the demographic development of the Muslim community in the world and Europe, part two shows the processes of secularization in Europe, with particular attention paid to Britain. The third part examines the reaction of Muslims in the UK towards secularism in Europe, their proselytism and the importance of Christian-Muslim cooperation in the modernization of Islam. Analysis shows that secularization of Europe is much more of a challenge than an opportunity for the integration of immigrants from Muslim countries. In the first place, among the factors, hindering integration, one can put the Muslim conviction of the superiority of the Islamic values over the "godless" and "immoral" Europe and therefore religious mission that Muslims attempt to play in Europe. This type of attitude does not facilitate the coexistence between the Muslim community and the peoples of Europe. It also allows extreme groups, as terrorist recruiting young Muslims, especially second generation seeking their identity in religion.

Opis:: The Ottoman invasion of the Balkans that began in the 14th century led to an imbalance in the process of self-identification among the Bosnian people, having crucial influence on the process of establishing their sense of belonging, identification and national awareness. It particularly influenced the process of conceptualizing the cultural identity of Boshnjaks, whose ancestors converted to Islam and changed the ethnic and religious landscape of Balkans to a large extent. The author focuses on the political and social factors determining the shape of Bosnian identity, its origin and historical circumstances which influenced not only identification processes but also the course of the conflict in the Balkans between 1992 and 1995. This paper also provides data on many controversial facts regarding influences of Islamic radicals on Bosnian society before and after the fall of Yugoslavia. On the basis of social and historical analysis the author indicates that contemporary theories on cultural origin of conflicts, reduced to the dichotomy Jihad vs. McWorld are not applicable in the case of the unique, multicultural identity of Bosnian Muslims.
