Opis:: Modern Internet serves as a high-performance platform for an ever-increasing number of services. Some of them – video services in particular – are of the broadband variety. So, it is not surprising that segments of networks can rapidly become congested, which may lead to a deterioration in quality. It is hoped that the new MPEG-DASH technique will alleviate congestion. This paper contains an analysis of the new technology’s impact on the quality of service in IP networks. It also explains a new numerical tool QoSCalc(DASH) that has been used to analyze the DASH method in different scenarios. The results are presented graphically and interpreted.

Opis:: Na podstawie prac prowadzonych w IŁ przedstawiono najważniejsze wymagania stawiane sieciom realizującym usługę VoIP. Wyszczególniono aspekty techniczne związane z przesyłaniem pakietów głosowych w sieci danych. Omówiono problemy dotyczące zaadaptowania protokołu IP do usługi VoIP. Opisano czynniki wpływające na jakość głosu przenoszonego w sieci danych i zaproponowano ogólny proces testowania jakości głosu w sieciach o ustalonej charakterystyce ruchu.
In this article, the most important requirements to be satisfied by the VoIP data networks are presented as based on the research carried out by the NIT. Technical aspects concerning the transmission of voice packets in a data network are specified. Problems due to the IP protocol being adapted to the VoIP service are discussed. Factors influencing the quality of voice transmitted in a data network are described and a general process of testing the quality of voice in the data networks of stabilised characteristics of traffic is suggested.

Opis:: For the last decades huge efforts of telecommunication, Internet and media organizations have been focusing on creating standards and implementing one common network delivering multimedia services - Next Generation Network. One of the technologies which are very likely to be used in NGN transport layer is ASON/GMPLS optical network. The implementation of ASON/GMPLS technology using open source software and its results are the subject of this paper. The ASON/GMPLS architecture and its relation to the proposed ITU-T NGN architecture are described. The concept, functional structure and communication among architecture elements as well as the implementation of laboratory testbed are presented. The results of functional tests confirming proper software and testbed operation are stated.

Opis:: This paper describes a new measurement method for determining the quality of the IPTV (Television over IP) service. This method uses the latest IPTV Model and is one of a number of parameter-based measuring techniques (offline operation, i.e. without intrusive measurement). It delivers results that come very close to those of the corresponding Perceptual Evaluation of Video Quality (PEVQ) curves. The method is quickly and easily implemented - one of the great advantages of using this method to measure QoS.

Opis:: This paper describes a new method for measuring and appraising the quality of the video stream in the video-telephony service in IP environments (VToIP). The method uses the so-called VS Model and belongs to the group of parameter-based measurement techniques (offline operation, i.e. without active measurement). It delivers results that come extremely close to those contained in the corresponding Perceptual Evaluation of Video Quality (PEVQ) curves. The method is quick and easy to use - a convincing argument for using this new QoS measuring method.

Opis:: IP scheduled throughput defined according to 3GPP TS 36.314 reflects user throughput regardless of traffic characteristics, and therefore has become one of the most important indicators for monitoring Quality of Service (QoS) of the end user in Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN). However, networks built on a distributed architecture make the above definition impossible to be applied directly due to the implementation challenges. This paper gives an overview of the classical Long Term Evolution (LTE) architecture as opposed to Dual Connectivity (DC) topology and focuses on a novel method of solving the calculation issue with the IP scheduled throughput measurement in edge computing environment. Experimental results show a good agreement with the real end user perception.

Opis:: The IP QoS System is based on next generation networks (NGN) and differentiated services (DiffServ) architectures. Its main part is a signaling system, which allows to send a request from a user to the system for establishing new connection with predefined quality of service assurance. In this paper we present trial results of the proposed signalling system. The experiments were performed to measure setup delay utilizing artificial call generator/analyzer. To obtain results we assumed different distributions of interarrival and call holding times based on the literature. The results show that the setup delay strongly depends on access time to network devices, however also on the assumed call holding time models.

Opis:: Future IP QoS (quality of service) networks are aiming at differentiating transfer quality of packets belonging to different flows. For this purpose, a set of network services (NS) with different QoS objectives is defined and implemented in the network. To a NS a certain amount of network resources, i.e. dedicated link capacity with associated buffer size, is allocated. Moreover, the resources dedicated for one NS are not available for other NSs. Traditional approach for admission control algorithm corresponding to given NS takes into account current traffic conditions inside considered NS. This can lead to the situation, due to traffic fluctuations, that temporary overloaded NS cannot use the spare bandwidth from underloaded in this time other NSs. This paper describes a conditional admission control algorithm (C-AC), allowing us to admit new packet flow conditionally in the case where no available capacity inside a given NS. For conditionally accepted flow currently unused capacity, dedicated to other NS, is allocated. This can be done only in the case when QoS requirements for both the conditionally accepted flow and the flows in progress are satisfied. The conditions for effective using of C-AC algorithm are discussed in the paper, like characteristics of NS borrowing and lending capacity and their current traffic load. To show potential benefits of the approach, exemplary numerical results are included, corresponding to hypothetical NSs using REM (rate envelope multiplexing) scheme.

Opis:: The paper regards problem of providing statistical performance guarantees for real-time flows using Expedited Forwarding Per Hop Behavior (EF PHB) in IP Differentiated Services networks. Statistical approach to EF flows performance guarantees, based on calculation of probability that end-to-end packet delay is larger than certain value, allows larger network utilization than previously proposed deterministic approach. In the paper different methods of packet delay distribution evaluation are presented and compared. Considered cases comprise evaluation of delay distribution models for the core network and evaluation of end-to-end packet delay in the network consisted of edge node and chain of core nodes. Results obtained with aid of analytical models are compared with simulation results.

Opis:: The paper presents trial experiments with IP QoS network services (NS) defined and implemented in the AQUILA pilot installation. The AQUILA NSs (premium CBR, premium VBR, premium multimedia and premium mission critical) provide a framework for supporting a variety of applications generating both streaming and elastic traffic. The measurement experiments confirm that AQUILA architecture differentiates the QoS offered to these NSs. The presented numerical results were obtained in the test network installed in the Polish Telecom (Warsaw) consisting of 8 CISCO routers.

Opis:: This paper describes a new measurement method (VS model) for determining the quality of online video services relying on modern H.265/HEVC and VP9 codecs. The said method has been developed on the basis of VQuad-HD curves (according to ITU-T J.341). This model does not refer to signal analysis, but protocol analysis instead. The parameters used are: type of video codec, encoding rate, transport technique, packet loss and burst size. The method may be implemented quickly and easily, which is one of the great advantages when using this method to measure QoS.

Opis:: Today’s Internet knows no bounds. New applications are marketed every single day. Many of them incorporate video sequences. These must be transported over the Internet quickly (often in real time). However, the Internet has not been designed for live communications and, regrettably, this may become apparent all too quickly. Countermeasures are required in the form of new, eﬃcient transport techniques facilitating online video services. MPEG-DASH is one of such modern techniques. But how good is this new technique really? This paper delves into the matter. The paper contains an analysis of the impact that the new technology exerts on the quality of video streaming over IP networks. Opis:: Now, a network operator must choose between two packet switched technologies for providing QoS in WAN networks, which are ATM and IP QoS [3, 4, 9]. As ATM has reached the maturity with capabilities for offering a number of different network services (i.e. CBR, VBR, ABR, UBR, GFR), the IP QoS with network services like expedited forwarding, assured forwarding, etc. is still at developing phase but never-theless is commonly regarded as capable to guarantee in near future similar QoS level as ATM. This paper tries to compare the efficiency of the mentioned technologies (in case of IP QoS network the AQUILA network concept [1, 2] is investigated) for handling traffic generated by LANs with QoS differentiation. This is extremely required since the applications running in LAN differ in QoS requirements and emitted traffic profiles (streaming, elastic). Therefore, a classification process of outgoing LAN traffic into predefined sub-streams should be performed at the entry point to WAN network (edge ATM switch or IP router). Furthermore, particular sub-streams are submitted to adequate WAN network service, available in ATM or IP QoS. The paper presents the experimental results, measured in the test bed, corresponding to QoS level and QoS differentiation provided by ATM and IP QoS core.For this purpose, a set of representative applications currently available to a LAN user was selected demanding from the core different QoS level. They correspond to streaming applications like VoIP with QoS objectives represented mainly by packet delay characteristics and elastic applications controlled by TCP protocol with minimum guaranteed through-put/goodput as target.
