Opis:: The subject of this study is a cultural and poetical analysis of the periphrasable – metaphorical tombstone inscriptions from a Polish cemetery in Adampol (Turkey). Adampol is a Polish village in Turkey. It has been created in 1842. The Polish cemetery located there is a source of interesting information regarding the local Polish society. The tombstone inscriptions show the culture and interference mainly between two different cultures – Polish, closely tied with Christianity, and Turkish, tied with Islam. One of the tombstones analysed shows elements of Hindu culture which makes it a very interesting research material. This paper focuses only on the inscriptions that use figurative language. The material from this cemetery includes only seven tombstones with this kind of epitaphs.

Opis:: The present article deals with the problem of the presumably Hebrew inscription on the coronation sword of Polish kings, known as the 'Szczerbiec'. Our objective is not to recall or reconstruct the complexity of its history. It is rather to expose some elements of the sword's bizarre haps and mishaps, as far as they may cast some light on the emergence of the inscription and its meaning. The main purpose of our attempt is to present one possible consistent reading of the inscription, taking into account some historical and linguistic data. Our proposal draws from some previous reconstructions, both past and current. Finally, however, we hope to offer an original interpretation of the inscription.

Opis:: Miano inskrypcji poetyckich na obrazie w malarstwie chińskim odnosi się do tych wierszy, które opisywały czy krytykowały obrazy, ale też koniecznie stanowiły element obrazu, czyli były na nich zapisane. Wraz jednak z praktyką inskrybowania wierszy inskrypcje przyjęły podwójne znaczenie, odnosząc się także do tych i innych wierszy, które były fizycznie zapisane na obrazach, nawet jeśli nie przedstawiały czy krytykowały obrazu, lub jeśli w odległy chociaż sposób nawiązywały do tematu oryginalnego obrazu. Jako gatunek z pogranicza innych sztuk inskrypcja okazuje się niezwykle ważna w badaniach nad chińską poezją i malarstwem i przedstawia różne wzorce tekstowe relacji poezja–malarstwo.
The name of the poetic inscriptions on the Chinese paintings refers to those poems that describe or criticize images, but are necessarily part of the picture, that is, were written on them. However, along with the practice of inscribing poems, the inscriptions have adopted double meaning, referring to those and other poems that were physically included in the images, even if they did not depict or criticize the image, or if at a distant way they referred to the subject of the original image as The other border art genre proves extremely important in the study of Chinese poetry and painting, and presents various textual patterns of poetry-painting relations.

Opis:: Ukształtowany schemat wpisu sztambuchowego, czerpiącego z bogatej tradycji emblematycznej, pozwolił na odkrycie, traktowanego dotąd raczej jako dedykacja lub w ogóle pomijanego, rękopiśmiennego wpisu sztambuchowego Jerzego Wilhelma Klocha w książce cieszyńskiego pastora Jana Muthmanna. Wpis budzi zainteresowanie przede wszystkim ze względu na rysujące się możliwości odkrycia nowych obiektów tego typu w literaturze dzięki zastosowaniu w trakcie badań wspomnianych przed chwilą stałych elementów konstrukcyjnych przynależnych temu gatunkowi literackiemu. Sam zaś przedstawiony wpis stał się dodatkowym potwierdzeniem osobistych więzi łączących dwóch cieszyńskich pastorów.
The established form of album inscriptions, basing on the rich emblematic tradition, made it possible to identify a hand-written album-like inscription of Jerzy Wilhelm Kloch in a book by pastor Jan Muthmann from Cieszyn, which had been earlier regarded as a mere dedication or just passed over. The inscription is of interest primarily as it indicates that one may discover other inscriptions of this type in literature through looking for the aforementioned characteristic features of this literary genre. It has also become another confirmation of close ties of friendship between the two Cieszyn pastors.

Opis:: Runic and ogham inscriptions are contained within a form, place and shape which may pinpoint to a specific message that remains hidden on the level of the text itself. This extra-linguistic and extra-textual dimension of inscriptions was an iconic element of the process of shaping of early oral cultures in their transition to literacy. As Judith Jesch (1998) argues, due to the sole materiality of inscribed stones, which allows to contain words, as well as the fact that inscriptions create a space for convergence of oral and literate cultures, it is possible to pinpoint differences between these two types of cultures. The following article1 seeks to address the issue of transition from orality to literacy on the basis of early ogham and Latin traditions of inscribed stones. The main area of focus here lies in early Welsh inscribed stones, which represent a similar set of characteristics to runic inscribed stones. The extra-linguistic paradigm of these inscriptions allows distinguishing not only the meaning and addressees of the inscription, but also enables recovering information on the circumstances in which inscriptions were probably created.

Opis:: The article discusses the optional elements of gravestone inscriptions in the Orthodox cemeteries in the eastern part of Lubelszczyzna region. The analysis of positively valued aspects of the earthly life of the person – to whom the inscriptions are devoted – was conducted (e.g. occupation, education, position, social status, scientific degree(s), professional involvement, citizenship, character qualities, etc.). These elements constitute a kind of funerary characteristics of the deceased person, they are also a reflection of the social vision of the proper and decent life.
W artykule omówiono elementy fakultatywne inskrypcji nagrobnych nekropolii prawosławnych wschodniej Lubelszczyzny. Przeprowadzono analizę wartościowanych pozytywnie aspektów życia doczesnego osoby, której poświęcone są inskrypcje (np. zawód, wykształcenie, stanowisko, pozycja społeczna, godności naukowe, zaangażowanie zawodowe, postawa obywatelska, przymioty charakteru itp.). Elementy te tworzą swoistą charakterystykę funeralną zmarłego, są też odzwierciedleniem społecznej wizji właściwego i godnego życia.

Opis:: This preliminary study of the so-called ‘Pistiros Inscription’ challenges the dominant interpretation of the document that has crystallized in the years since its preliminary publication, namely, that the inscription somehow guarantees the rights of traders operating within Pistiros. A reexamination of the rhetorical structure of the inscription and a reconstruction of the inscription’s relationship with preexisting documents on this subject, which are not extant, raises the possibility that the function of the inscription was somewhat different than the communis opinio: the Pistiros Inscription appears to have supplemented earlier regulation concerning Pistiros and to have attempted to limit the authority of an official, possibly a Thracian royal, who exercised dramatic power within Pistiros.

Opis:: The article above contains a Polish translation and some notes on an ancient text known as Philadelphian inscription. Found at the beginning of the 20th century among ruins of the ancient Lydian Philadelphia (now Turkish Alaęehir), carved on a blue marble stele, with no doubt originally placed in front of an ancient chapel, serving also as a meeting place of a smali religious and philosophical community headed by a man called Dionysios. The inscription gives some principles of purity to be followed by the guests of the chapel, with ethical and social issues involved, e.g. chastity of marriage, related both to man and woman, free and slave, as far as condemn of application of any poisonous or abortive substances. The most interesting fact about the text of the inscription is an approval of a fetus as a child, a human being whose life should be protected, and abortion must be actually treated as a kind of homicide. It is known also as the first written evidence of the Hippocratic oath’s influence in the ancient world.
