Opis:
A new mammal−bearing locality from the Intertrappean beds (Maastricthian) of Rangapur, Andhra Pradesh, India provides isolated teeth referable to Deccanolestes and a new eutherian, Sahnitherium rangapurensis. Dental comparisons with Cimolestes, Procerberus, and Aboletylestes do not support proposed “palaeoryctoid” affinities for Deccanolestes. Although similarities exist with Otlestes and Batodon, Deccanolestes is currently considered to be of uncertain familial affinities. Sahnitherium rangapurensis exhibits similarities to Procerberus, Paranyctoides, Alostera, Aboletylestes, and Avitotherium, but it is here placed within Eutheria incertae sedis. Despite family level taxonomic uncertainties, the new material confirms the presence of eutherians on the Indian subcontinent during the Late Cretaceous. A Eurasian connection via an early collision or some other dispersal route may explain these paleobiogeographic data, but other hypotheses are considered. In particular, paleogeographic, paleontological, and molecular systematic data hint that boreosphenidan mammals may have had wider distribution on Gondwana during the Cretaceous than previously supported.

Opis:
A brief investigation of light minerals along the beaches between Valinokkam and Tuticorin has been carried out for the first time along the Southern Tamilnadu coast in order to discover the provenance of the sediments. The study spotlights a wide variation in light mineralogy along the three zones of the investigated area (Valinokkam, Vaippar and Tuticorin). A higher percentage of quartz is reported from the Valinokkam (48.34 to 68.63%) and Tuticorin zones (55.66 to 73.05%) than from the Vaippar zone (40.24 to 60.77%). The trend with regard to the maturity index is similar, with appreciably higher values in Valinokkam (1.15 to 1.89) and Tuticorin (1.61 to 1.94) than Vaippar (0.79 to 1.39). Morphological analysis of quartz grains shows a higher order of sphericity and roundness values in Valinokkam and Tuticorin as compared to Vaippar. Moreover, the surface texture of quartz grains observed with the aid of scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs reveals the presence of different depositional environments and the multiple origin of beach sediments in the study area. From the present study of the light mineralogy of beach sediments, it is inferred that the source of the sediments is a mixed type: igneous and metamorphic crystalline rocks, together with palaeosediments.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of micromorphological analyses concerning soil covers near Cherrapunji with mean annual rainfall of 12 000 mm. Two soil profiles representing typical land use: grass formation (Cherrapunji–1) and natural evergreen forest (Cherrrapunji–2) have been choosen. Processes leading to formation of Dystric Cambisols predominate in both profiles. However they have different weathering features. Soil cover under grass has more weathered quartz and contains less feldspars compared to soil cover in the forest area. Soils are characterized also by a large volume of pores which is typical for the tropical humid areas. The rapid infiltration of large amounts of water protects forest soil from surficial erosion. In case of soils under grass vegetation, micropores are filled with fresh organic matter (fine roots and plants tissue). Since both profiles are located on similar substratum (Paleogene sandstones) and under the same climatic conditions, it is assumed that the micromorphological differences are due to long-term (several centuries) differences in local land use.

Grain size studies of sediments from beaches in the region from Mandapam to Kanyakumari, divided into 5 sectors, indicate that sediments are unimodal to polymodal in nature, coarse to fine grained, moderately to poorly sorted, and positively-negatively skewed in character. The inference to be drawn from these studies is that the variation in sedimentological parameters is governed by fluvial input, wave dynamics, and littoral transport of the sediments. Bivariant plots show that the Mandapam and Kanyakumari sectors can be classified as beach environments, whereas the Tuticorin and Valinokkam sectors come under the influence of riverine environments and the dune environment in the Manappad sector. The CM pattern of all five sectors shows a clustered distribution of sediments in the PQ and QR segments, indicating a graded mode of deposition. Visher diagrams depict a wave shadow environment for the Mandapam sector, whereas the Valinokkam, Tuticorin and Manappad sectors show double saltation populations characteristic of beaches, and the Kanyakumari sector is characterized by a more truncated population characteristic of a plunge zone, which is a high-energy environment.

Opis:
On 26D ecember 2004, a tsunami severely affected almost all the coastal villages of Kanyakumari District, India. It was one of the worst affected coastal sectors of South India. An attempt has been made here to assess the impact of the tsunami hazard on coastal landforms and the level of inundation using GIS techniques. The areas of inundation were surveyed and mapped by fixing regular transects along the coastal regions. The percentage of inundated area in the total area was estimated. It was found that inundation was higher on low-lying coasts and relatively less on elevated coasts. In some cases, the extent of inundation was a few kilometres in relation to other coasts, but the percentage of inundated area in the total coastal area was high. The extent of inundation along the study area varied from 50 m to 450 m. Inundation was minimal in coastal villages like Kanyakumari, Agastheeswaram, Madhysoodhanapuram and Dharmapuram, but extensive at Colachel. The percentage of inundated area in the total area ranges from 8% (Dharmapuram) to 39% (Colachel). The degree of inundation was controlled by coastal geomorphological features such as sand dunes, cliffs, coastal vegetation, nature and configuration of the beach, not to mention the angle and velocity of the invading tsunami surge.

The sediments of the beaches along the central coast of Tamil Nadu from Pondicherry to Vedaranyam were studied for their textural variation. 108 sediment samples collected from the low-, mid-, and high-tidal zones, as well as the berms and dunes of different beach morpho-units were analysed. The study area was divided into three sectors (northern, central and southern) on the basis of prevailing energy conditions and oceanographic parameters. The poorly sorted, negatively skewed, coarser sediments of the northern sector are indicative of denudational processes taking place there. Medium-to-fine, moderately-to-well sorted, positivesymmetrically skewed sediments dominate the central sector, probably as a result of the influence of palaeo-sediments deposited by rivers from inland as well as by waves and currents from offshore. Fine, poorly sorted, positive-symmetrically skewed sediments dominate the southern sector, highlighting depositional processes. Linear Discriminant Function Analysis (LDF) of the samples indicates a shallow marine environment origin for all the three sectors. These results show that reworked sediments, submerged during the Holocene marine transgression, are being deposited on present-day beaches by waves, currents and rivers in the study area.

Opis:
The early Eocene (Ypresian) Cambay Formation of Vastan Lignite Mine in Gujarat, western India, has produced a diverse assemblage of snakes including at least ten species that belong to the Madtsoiidae, Palaeophiidae (Palaeophis and Pterosphenus), Boidae, and several Caenophidia. Within the latter taxon, the Colubroidea are represented by Russellophis crassus sp. nov. (Russellophiidae) and by Procerophis sahnii gen. et sp. nov. Thaumastophis missiaeni gen. et sp. nov. is a caenophidian of uncertain family assignment. At least two other forms probably represent new genera and species, but they are not named; both appear to be related to the Caenophidia. The number of taxa that represent the Colubroidea or at least the Caenophidia, i.e., advanced snakes, is astonishing for the Eocene. This is consistent with the view that Asia played an important part in the early history of these taxa. The fossils come from marine and continental levels; however, no significant difference is evident between faunas from these levels. The fauna from Vastan Mine includes highly aquatic, amphibious, and terrestrial snakes. All are found in the continental levels, including the aquatic palaeophiids, whereas the marine beds yielded only two taxa. Vastan Mine is only the second locality in which the palaeophiids Palaeophis and Pterosphenus co−occur. The composition of the fauna from Vastan is on the whole similar to that of the early Eocene of Europe; however, comparisons with early Eocene faunas of other continents are not possible because they are poorly known or unknown.

Opis:
A new ailuravine rodent, Meldimys musak sp. nov. (Mammalia: Rodentia, Ischyromyidae), is recorded from the lower Eocene lignites of western India. It is the oldest record of Rodentia from India. M. musak is more derived than the earliest Eocene ailuravine Euromys cardosoi from Portugal and more generalized than late early Eocene E. inexpectatus and Ailuravus michauxi from France. Its dental morphology closely corresponds to the middle early Eocene species M. louisi, which lived about 52 Ma in Western Europe. Meldimys was previously known only from Europe, and ailuravines were previously reported only from Europe and North America. Its occurrence in India allows the first direct correlation between the early Eocene land mammal horizons of Europe and India, and raises the possibility of a terrestrial faunal exchange between India and Eurasia close to the Palaeocene–Eocene transition.

India is a pluralistic, multilingual and multi-ethnic country located in Southeast Asia. It is the 2nd largest populated country which has the 7th position in the geographical area. Since 1990 India has emerged as one of the wealthiest economies in the developing world. Recently it is the second fastest growing major economy in the world. Despite the fact that economical development in India has been accompanied by increases in life expectancy, literacy rates and food security, India’s performance in the area of health care has been still far from satisfactory. The system of financing health care as a one of the most privatized in the world faces especially many problems. This paper would therefore attempt to describe and assess the system of financing health care in India. In order to outline to the readers the overall country context the first section will provide a brief description of the demographic, economic and health profile of the Indian population. The second and third sections will present the main methods of funding health care in India as well as and the budget of health care system. The concluding section would attempt to assess the financing system in India and offer a way forward for the better achievement of health care system goals.

Opis:
Since 1991 the world’s interest in South Asia has been rising continually. On the parallel basis India s ambitions and its commitment to international affairs influenced both foreign and economic policy. This is to observe also with respect to increase in regional cooperation in South Asia. In the mid-point of the 21st century India will become the most populous nation worldwide. Due to in-depth changes within India s economy which began in the early nineties India enjoys accelerated economic growth which could spill all over the region. This involves changes across the society and growing domestic demand. Thanks to increased openness of the Indian economy the volume of regional trade begins to rise eventually. India attracts more foreign investment and draws investors’ attention to other South Asian countries. This article also aims at highlighting India s key role in regional political and economic cooperation within SAARC and BIMSTEC. The author also concentrates on new perspectives of Indian foreign policy i.e. the Look-East-Policy and a new approach to Indian Ocean. Contrary to a common belief that specific Indian political culture may hamper solving regional, mainly boundary, conflicts, and the author argues that India in the decades to come will take advantage of its democratic political system to prove its readiness to assume a more pragmatic stance towards China, Pakistan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. This is critical for India in order to sustain its success.

This article is concentrated on a difficult period in sino-indian relations. After short friendly relations in mid 1950's, called in publications Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai, which means Indians and Chinese are brothers, at the end of 1950's and beginning of 1960's both countries were considered the opposite as an aggressor and - potentially - long term competitor. Both countries changed their strategies and tactics. The border war of 1962 was a result of such politics. It could be not directly connected with article's title although author try to emphasise Indian and Chinese foreign policy towards Pakistan, USA and USSR, as key players in international relations in eastern hemisphere. The issue of Tibetan revolution, and the escalation of power in the border area between India and China, which includes Sikkim and Bhutan is also discussed.
