Opis:
The security is important issue in wireless networks. This paper discusses audio watermarking as a tool to improve the security of image communication over the IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee network. The adopted watermarking method implements the Singular-Value Decomposition (SVD) mathematical technique. This method is based on embedding a chaotic encrypted image in the Singular Values (SVs) of the audio signal after transforming it into a 2-D format. The objective of chaotic encryption is to enhance the level of security and resist different attacks. Experimental results show that the SVD audio watermarking method maintains the high quality of the audio signals and that the watermark extraction and decryption are possible even in the presence of attacks over the ZigBee network.

Opis:
In this paper a summary is given of the ongoing research at the Belgian Royal Military Academy in the field of mobile ad hoc networks in general and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in particular. In this study, all wireless sensor networks are based on the physical and the medium access layer of the IEEE 802.15.4 low rate wireless personal area networks standard. The paper gives a short overview of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard in the beaconless mode together with a description of the sensor nodes and the software used throughout this work. The paper also reports on the development of a packet sniffer for IEEE 802.15.4 integrated in wireshark. This packet sniffer turns out to be indispensable for debugging purposes. In view of future applications on the wireless network, we made a theoretical study of the effective data capacity and compared this with measurements performed on a real sensor network. The differences between measurements and theory are explained. In case of geograph- ically meaningful sensor data, it is important to have a knowledge of the relative position of each node. In the last part of the paper we present some experimental results of positioning based on the received signal strength indicators (RSSI). As one could expect, the accuracy of such a method is poor, even in a well controlled environment. But the method has some potential.

Opis:
IEEE 802.15.4 standard defines Physical (PHY) and Wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) layers for wireless sensor networks (WSN). In recent years, many types of wireless sensor networks have been developed based on this standard. Currently, probably the most popular implementation of the mentioned standard are wireless ZigBee networks. Moreover, ZigBee provides functions normally attributed to the higher layers of network protocol stack. Among those the most important functions are: routing of data, data encryption and providing redundancy connections between devices in the network. We present a slightly different approach to the construction of wireless sensor networks. This is the beginning of series of papers about implementation of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and the previously mentioned expansion functions in the network, built with RFM wireless communication modules and ATmega processors. This paper describes the basics of compiling wireless connection and data transmission with using RFM modules. In addition, blocking and non-blocking types of connections between radio modules and ways to connect RFM modules with ATmega processors are described.

Opis:
Design of the MAC protocol is crucial in all wireless sensor networks (WSNs) due to its influence on the performance of the transceiver, i.e. the most energy-consuming component of each sensor node. A mechanism known as “carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance” (CSMA/CA) is used for accessing the wireless channel in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard-based MAC protocol in order to avoid collisions between the network’s communicating nodes. CSMA/CA relies on two clear channel assessments (CCA=2) for checking the status of the channel. In this paper, we develop an additional CCA algorithm for the two scenarios encountered in star topology-enabled WSNs. Next, we investigate the impact of an additional clear channel assessment (CCA=3) on performance in IEEE 802.15.4. We develop a Markov chain model for the proposed methodology, and validate it using Matlab. Simulation results show that there is a significant improvement of performance metrics in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard-based MAC protocol with an additional CCA.

Opis:
Visible light communication (VLC) has been recently proposed as an alternative standard to radio-based wireless networks. Originally developed as a physical media for PANs (Personal area Networks) it evolved into universal WLAN technology with a capability to transport internet suite of network and application level protocols. Because of its physical characteristics, and in line with the slogan "what you see is what you send", VLC is considered a secure communication method. In this work we focus on security aspects of VLC communication, starting from basic physical characteristics of the communication channel. We analyze the risks of signal jamming, data snooping and data modification. We also discuss MAC-level security mechanisms as defined in the IEEE 802.15.7 standard. This paper is an extension of work originally reported in Proceedings of the 13th IFAC and IEEE Conference on Programmable Devices and Embedded Systems - PDES 2015.

Opis:
Filter bank multicarrier waveform is investigated as a potential waveform for visible light communication broadcasting systems. Imaginary inter-carrier and/or inter-symbol interference are causing substantial performance degradation in the filter bank multicarrier system. Direct current-biased optical filter bank multicarrier modulation overcomes all the problems of direct current-biased optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation approaches in terms of speed and bandwidth. However, it also wastes a lot of energy while transforming a true bipolar signal into a positive unipolar signal by adding direct current-bias. In this paper, a flip-filter bank multicarrier-based visible light communication system was introduced to overcome this problem. In this system, a bipolar signal is converted to a unipolar signal by isolating the positive and negative parts, turning them to positive and then delivering the signal. Also, a new channel estimation scheme for a flip-filter bank multicarrier system is proposed which improves the channel estimation performance compared to that of each of the conventional schemes. The proposed system performance is measured in terms of bit error rate, normalized mean squared error, and constellation diagram. The superiority of the proposed scheme over other conventional structures has been successfully verified by MATLAB 2020b simulation experiments results. These results are evaluated under indoor visible light communication standard.
