Opis:
The article talks about the actions of God as described by prophet Hosea in Hos 2: 16-25, which are the consequence of the sin and the unfaithfulness shown by Israel to God. Despite the fact that Israel's sin of should be met with punishment from God, Hosea predicts God's mercy. To formulate this, the prophet applies a rare idiomatic Hebrew expression על־לב דבר, which could be translated as talking kindly to the heart. The article conducts a short analysis of nine instances in the Bible in which this expression has been used, underlining the difficulties and lack of consequences in translating this expression to Polish. Subsequently, an interpretation of על־לב דבר, as applied by Hosea in the above mentioned passage, was carried out. The explanation of the idiom has as its aim a more profound understanding of the message conveyed in the selected excerpt. The use of the image of marriage in this text, which is accompanied by forgiveness to an unfaithful wife, became for Hosea an illustration of mercy that God shows to His believers.

The article focuses on the theme of return/conversion in the Book of Hosea. The issue is presented from the perspective of the two parties of the covenant: God and Israel. At the starting point lies Israel’s refusal to return to God, and Yahweh’s threatening, punitive retribution to his people. The ending focuses on the conversion of the people to Yahweh, a development possible only owing to God’s preceding forgiveness, expressed by his turn to his people. These four different dynamics of return are reconstructed on the basis of the twenty-two instances of the verb šûb in the Book of Hosea.

In the Book of Hosea a noun "'ab" does not apply to the prophet or Yahweh, but an idea of their fatherhood occurs in the prophecy. The prophet was called to be a husband of the woman of whoredom and a father of the children of whoredom. Hosea accepted this calling and consequently remained in love with them. In this way he became an image of God’s love for His people. In the marital and parental story of Hosea, Yahweh reveals His torn heart. It shows that He not only loves Israel, but also how does it. In the face of the continuous infidelity of the Chosen People, God’s love must be stronger than human sin.It was shown in the image of paternal and motherly love, it signifies complete love which was expressed in a human way in the Book of Hosea. Yahweh always forgives, loves and gives new life. In spite of the fact that Israel is really “the son of whoredom” who rejects love and knowledge of God as his Father and Saviour, he still remains in the bonds of God’s incomprehensible love and is called “the son of God”.

Opis:
The document of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, called What is man? A Journey through Biblical Anthropology points out in Chapter 1 (“The Human being created by God”), par. 33 that “[t]he failure to recognise the ‘created’ nature of the human being is made explicit in history as an arrogant presumption…” (46) and in par. 34 that “[a]n extraordinary endowment of intelligence, wealth and power gives the human being the illusion of being equal to God. To expose this deception of conscience the Lord predicts the inglorious end of the arrogant” (47). Many of the critiques and prophecies of Hosea are proclaimed in a period of Israelite history which reflects false and arrogant presumptions of the people of God. During the reign of Jeroboam II (ca. 784–753 BC) Israel experienced economic growth, territorial expansion and peace with the Arameans and the Judeans. However, especially following the Syro-Ephraimite war (734–732 BC) it became clear that Israel’s political and military manoeuvres and his trust in his own strength can only lead to disaster. This is one of the recurring messages of Hosea who points out that the only way to stand is to believe and trust in God alone. Many of his images and concepts describe Israel’s false beliefs and presumptions which are based on the erroneous knowledge of God. Hos 7:8-16 can be read as an essence of this message. Its literary devices and notions emphasize that while Israel appears to be potent, he is in fact impotent, the undiscerning nation’s “strength” is withering away. Israel seems wise and knowledgeable when he is in fact unwise and does not know the way of life. In the context of the entire book this passage affirms that the basis of the relation of God and Israel is always the right knowledge of him which entails the right knowledge of the self and of its place in the universe. One of God’s greatest mercies for creation and Israel is that he is available, he can be sought, found and known through his words and deeds. Hosea as the mediator of God conveys to Israel that they can call upon God, seek him and know him. While his message is for a special historical period and circumstances, it is relevant for all ages when humans ignore their created nature and aspire to be powerful, self-sufficient, intelligent in economic, scientific, political and military matters.

The first part of the article deals with four different understandings of Hosea 6:6 in the context of that entire book: (1) the repudiation of the cult as such; (2) the rejection of a particular notion of cult; (3) the priority of ethics over the cult; and (4) the symbiosis of cult and ethics, i.e. that an authentic cult interweaves ethical values and proper ritual conduct. The author concludes that the fourth interpretation best fits the message of the Book of Hosea. The second part of the article deals with the problem of the textual Vorlage which would have been used by Matthew. He seems to have quoted the Hebrew text in a way that remains faithful to his contemporary hermeneutical rule, according to which each element of a biblical parallelism was to be interpreted separately, based on the belief that every single line carried equal weight and conveyed a new truth or a new law. The Matthean rereading of Hosea 6:6, the focus of the third part, is presented from two perspectives: the synchronic and the diachronic. In the synchronic presentation, the main point of concern is the contribution of the quotes in 9:13 and 12:7 to the understanding of those Matthean pericopes. Finally, the diachronic reading deals with the Matthean use of Hosea 6:6 within the context of the Matthean community and its dialogue with the Rabbinic Judaism of that day.

Opis:
Dopełnia go jednak drugi: miłosierdzie – gotowe przebaczyć i zrobić wszystko, by ocalić niewierną małżonkę oraz przywrócić utraconą jedność. Zarysowana przez Ozeasza małżeńska miłość Boga znajdzie swe ucieleśnienie w osobie Jezusa Chrystusa – Oblubieńcu Kościoła.
The Love of God experienced by the prophet Hosea (8th century BC) is closely linked in its description, which is contained in Hos 2,4-25, with the historical and existential context: Israel’s idolatry and the marital infidelity of the Prophet’s wife. In the face of this situation this Love reveals its spousal character. It is characterized by ‘jealousy’ – fervent concern for the relationship’s exclusiveness with simultaneous intolerance of adultery, the latter being connected with the dimension of justice. This aspect, however, is complemented by another: mercy – the readiness to forgive and do anything to save the unfaithful wife and to restore the lost unity. The marital Love of God outlined by Hosea will find its embodiment in the Person of Jesus Christ – the Spouse of the Church.

In this article we included St. Jerome’s standpoint on Gomer - the prostitute and wife of Hosea. This topic was presented in two stages. First, we analysed an issue of ideal woman according to St. Jerome. Then we presented a picture of Gomer in St. Jerome’s comment on the Book of Hosea 1–3. The main point of this article was an attempt to answer a question how St. Jerome deals with conveying the biblical meaning, according to which the prophet on God’s command marries an adulterous woman. This issue is very interesting, because the author of Vulgate had rather unfavourable attitude towards the institution of marriage and Gomer was not only married, but also a prostitute.

n a study of the complexity of the redaction of the Pentateuch, the Bookof Hosea plays an important role. This Book is a witness to many theologicalmotifs which are also found in the Torah. Nowadays, the opinion is generallyheld that the Pentateuch is a predominantly post-exilic work, particularly inrelation to the patriarchs. However, if we assume that in fact the majority ofthe text of Hosea was written in the eighth century B.C., it becomes evidentthat many of the theological concepts were already known in the time ofHosea. Particularly noteworthy is the idea of the creation of the People, theirelection in the desert and their bringing out of Egypt. The prophet shows usthat the commandments of the Decalogue are a component of the covenant.Noteworthy is the fact that there is a convergence of ideas between Hoseaand Deuteronomy, which is particularly exhibited in the common image offather and son, and in the idea of God’s enduring love for his people. Hoseaalso presents a lot of information about the patriarch Jacob, which indicatesthat this figure has its own ancient history.

The aim of the article is to present the possibility of adding a new meaning to the semantic field of the verb עבר in Hos 10:11bc. After having examined the three translation options of Hos 10:11bc (Marti/Rudolph, Jeremias, Harper/Kwakkel), the author analyses the syntax of the verse in order to propose his own solution. He shows that the antithetic structure of Hos 10,11bc is the key to understanding not only the sense of the verb עבר, used here, but also of the entire verse and its intricated theology.

The expression וַיַַּעַַַל בְְּכָָל־הָָאָָרֶֶץ in 2 Kgs 17:5a is apparently simple and devoid of semantic or syntactic difficulty. This Hebrew phrase is, however, interpreted variously by the scholars who generate a considerable plurality of its translations. The problem appears to lie in the diversity with which the meaning of the verb √ עלה and of the preposition בְְּ, and further, their semantic and syntactic relation in 2 Kgs 17:5a, are interpreted. The examination of these lexemes’ semantics and their interrelated syntax in the Hebrew text leads to the following conclusions: (1) the verb √ עלה has there a technical-military meaning “to invade, attack, march against;” (2) it is used stereotypically and from the sociolinguistic perspective it denotes the nuance of an upward movement; (3) the meaning of בְְּ is spatial in 2 Kgs 17:5a and marks an area moved through; (4) the syntactic relation √ בְּ + עלה is not equivalent to √ עַל + עלה , and consequently, the technical-military meaning of the verb does not remove the spatial meaning of the preposition. It is proposed to translate 2 Kgs 17:5a in a following way: “And then (the king of Assyria) marched up throughout the whole country.” Such a rendering expresses both the Assyrian military actions, a physical movement upwards, and the area moved through. From the historical point of view, it describes the first stage of the Assyrian attack, the invasion going throughout the whole country of king Hosea (v. 5a), followed by an attack directed against its capital, Samaria (v. 5bc). Other interpretations (translations), either ignoring or highlighting one of the discussed features only, may be considered incomplete, questionable or unacceptable from the semantic and syntactic point of view.

The article presents an extended review of James M. Bos’s book Reconsidering the Date and the Provenance of the Book of Hosea. The Case for the Persian-Period Yehud, against the backdrop of the issue of the new historicism in biblical studies. After a brief overview of the phenomenon of this new historicism (its genesis and historical development), Bos’s approach is discussed from the point of view of its ideological-philosophical context. Then a detailed analysis of the entire structure of Bos’s book is presented, along with a critical assessment of his reasoning. The author of the article argues that the new historicist approach is completely subjective and wrong, as it absolutizes a philosophical principle without admitting the element of faith or any possibility of coincidence or doubt.

Like the rest of the prophetic books of the Bible, the Book of Hosea enjoyedmuch popularity and appreciation among the members of the Qumrancommunity. This fact is attested by three Biblical manuscripts of the book(4Q78-79, 4Q82), various quotations in “The Damascus Document”: CD1:13-14 (= Hos 4:16), CD 4:19 (= Hos 5:11), CD 8:3; 19:5-6 and par. 4Q266 (=Hos 5:10), CD 20:16 (= Hos 3:4), in the “Isaiah Pesher” (4Q163 frag. 23, col. 10, line 14 = Hos 6:9), in “The Midrash on the Last Days” (4Q177 col. 10, lines 13-14 = Hos 5:8), in the document “Bless, oh my soul, the Lord” (4Q434 frag. 7b, lines 2-3 = Hos 2:20) and, most of all, “Pesher Hosea” that remained in two scrolls (4Q166-167). It should be noted that quoting the book of Hosea with the introductory formula: “of which it is written” (CD 1:13) or “as it is said” (CD 19:15; 20:16) proves that this work, as in the case of the other biblical books, was considered to be an authoritative writing at Qumran. It is also worth pointing out that in most cases the quotations from the Book of Hosea were aptly and neatly chosen with a special regard to their original contexts (descriptions of and references to the Syro-Ephraimite War) – in the Qumran writings they are used to present the idea of the conflict between the community and its opponents. Discovering two manuscripts of “Pesher Hosea” (4Q166-167) in the Judean Desert at the Dead Sea testifies to the fact that the Biblical Book of Hosea was carefully studied by the community members and that its text served as a source of the commentary which not only mentions and alludes to historical events, but shows the eschatological aspect as well. Unfortunately, due to the miserable condition of both of the extant pesher manuscripts, drawing any final conclusions appears to be rather impeded, sometimes even impossible.
