The major goal of this research was to employ honey as a bio-indicator to identify the heavy metal levels in bee honey in the Istog, Drenas, and Kastriot regions. As a result, honey was purposely tested in these locations, and two industrial specific areas were chosen for examination and analysis: Kastriot (Graboc) and Drenas (Vrboc), as these are considered to be among the most industrial polluted areas. A honey sample was also taken in the Istog (Vrell, as a clean area) region in order to compare not just honey, but also the area where the bee obtains nectar, as well as the sources of pollution discharge into the environment. Concentrations of heavy metals in honey, (min. and max.) amounted to: Zn (8.705–9.804 mg/kg), Mn (5.620–5.718 mg/kg), Fe (3.635–3.745 mg/kg) and Cu (2.295–2.299 mg/kg). In contrast, lower concentrations of metals, have been observed for: Ni (0.640–1.126 mg/kg), Pb (0.235–0.268 mg/kg), As (0.107–0.199 mg/kg), Cd (0.040–0.058 mg/kg) and Cr (0.025–0.036 mg/kg) while elements such as; Hg, and Co, are almost undetected. The study of hierarchical clusters revealed several groupings of elements with geogenic and anthropogenic origins. The concentrations of heavy metals selected for honey were compared to standards of other countries, such as Poland and other European Union countries. Samples were taken in October 2020 and September 2021. The concentration of heavy metals was determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, ICP OES.

Yeast infections such as otitis externa and seborrheic dermatitis in dogs and cats are frequently associated with Malassezia pachydermatis secondary infection. It is part of the normal cutaneous microflora of most warm-blooded vertebrates, however, under certain conditions, it can become a causative agent of infection that needs to be treated pharmacologically. Azole derivatives are the drugs of the first choice. An interesting trend in developing resistance is the use of natural substances, which include manuka honey with confirmed antimicrobial properties. The main intention of this research was to evaluate the mutual effect of manuka honey in combination with four conventional azole antifungals – clotrimazole, fluconazole, itraconazole, and miconazole – on 14 Malassezia pachydermatis isolates obtained from dogs and 1 reference strain. A slightly modified M27–A3 method (CLSI 2008) and the checkerboard test (Nikolić et al. 2017) were used for this purpose. Our results show an additive effect of all 4 antifungals with manuka honey concurrent use. Based on the determined values of fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI – 0.74±0.03 when manuka honey combined with clotrimazole, 0.96±0.08 with fluconazole, 1.0±0 with miconazole and 1.16±0.26 with itraconazole), it was found in all cases that the effect of substances used is more pronounced in mutual combination than when used separately.

Celem pracy było omówienie gospodarczego znaczenia pszczelarstwa oraz spożycia, składu i prozdrowotnych właściwości miodu.
Although Poland is one of the important producers of honey in the European Union, the consumption of this product in our country is not high. This may be influenced by the relatively high prices of honey, their recent increase and – depending on the weather – possible annual fluctuations in the quantities produced. The aim of the study was to discuss the economic importance of beekeeping and the consumption, composition and health-promoting properties of honey.

Cancer is responsible for the death of millions of people all around the world. Among the large group of cancers, the prevalence of breast cancer is highest in women. Therapeutic interventions, including removal surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy which is largely used, may cause adverse effects on the quality of patients’ life. This fact has encouraged researchers to find natural substances such as honey to overcome harmful effects. Nowadays, honey is recommended for plenty of abnormalities because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Various studies have been conducted to explore the anticancer benefits of different types of honey from different origins. In this review, we are going to summarize in-vitro, animal, and human studies on the anti-breast cancer potential of honey.

Opis:
Identifying determinants of honey market supply in smallholder producers were the objective of the study. Both primary and secondary data were collected. A total of 150 honey producer households were selected randomly from honey producer households and data were collected by individual interviews using a pre-tested structured questionnaire and a focus group discussion. Secondary data were collected from published and unpublished sources. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression models. The model result revealed that beekeeping experience, training participation, colony number, frequency of extension contact and types of beehive owned significantly affect the volume of the honey marketed. The study highlights the importance of providing training, arranging field days and creating a forum for experience sharing, providing of a modern hive and giving good extension services.

Various types of pesticides are commonly used in modern agriculture. Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are sensitive indicators of environmental contamination with these substances. Exposure of honey bees to pesticides can lead to changes in their behaviour and increase mortality, so it is important to develop alternative formulations to common (‘chemical’) pesticides. The recently developed preparation Siltac EC (patent no. WO 2016/061259) shows promise as an effective substitute. It is based on a physical interaction with the pest and does not contain chemicals classified as pesticides. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the toxicity of Siltac EC to adult honey bee workers. The experiments showed that both contact and oral acute toxicity were very low, and that the preparation can preliminarily be considered safe for honey bees.

The aim of the work presented in the article was to review the design solutions of devices used for honey dehydration. The conducted analysis included literature reports from patent databases, solutions described in scientific publications as well as commercial solutions. The final conclusion of the considerations points out that the topic of honey dewatering is a current problem, the solution of which has been worked on since the 1970s, and which solutions are nowadays refined, modified and implemented for industrial production.
Celem pracy zaprezentowanej w artykule był przegląd rozwiązań konstrukcyjnych urządzeń stosowanych do zagęszczania (odwadniania) miodu. Przeprowadzona analiza obejmowała zarówno doniesienia literaturowe z baz patentowych, rozwiązania opisane w publikacjach naukowych jak i rozwiązania komercyjne. Wniosek końcowy rozważań zwraca uwagę, iż te mat odwadniania miodu jest aktualnym problemem, nad rozwiązaniem którego pracowano już od lat 70 XX wieku, a które to rozwiązania w dzisiejszych czasach są dopracowywane, modyfikowane i wdrażane do produkcji przemysłowej.

Pszczelarstwo ma duże znaczenie dla rozwoju rolnictwa. Jest ono rozpatrywane z jednej strony przez pryzmat pozyskiwania przez pszczelarzy produktów pszczelich, a z drugiej – ze względu na rolę, jaką pszczoły odgrywają w środowisku przyrodniczym, czyli przyczynianie się do uzyskiwania wyższych i lepszych plonów. Celem artykułu jest charakterystyka pszczelarstwa w Polsce w ujęciu regionalnym oraz ustalenie zmian zachodzących w sektorze pszczelarskim. Badaniem objęto lata 2012, 2016 i 2019. W pracy przeanalizowano dane wtórne zaczerpnięte z raportów Zakładu Pszczelnictwa Instytutu Ogrodnictwa w Puławach, które dotyczą wybranych zagadnień z zakresu pszczelarstwa. Analiza statystyczna dotycząca zróżnicowania pszczelarstwa w Polsce została przeprowadzona w ujęciach jedno- i dwuwymiarowym. Analizę w ujęciu dwuwymiarowym wykonano z wykorzystaniem metod opartych na miarach zanurzania obserwacji w próbie. Stwierdzono, że w analizowanych latach liczba rodzin pszczelich oraz liczba pszczelarzy rosła. Największą liczbą rodzin pszczelich charakteryzowały się województwa: lubelskie, małopolskie, podkarpackie i warmińsko-mazurskie, natomiast największą produkcją miodu – woj. lubelskie.
Beekeeping is of great significance for the development of agriculture. On the one hand, it may be considered in the context of the acquisition of bee products by beekeepers, and on the other, in terms of the role bees play in the natural environment, i.e. their contribu-tion to the production of higher and better crops. The aim of the paper is to present the beeke-eping sector across Poland's regions and to describe the changes it underwent in the studied period. The research was conducted in 2012, 2016 and 2019. The study uses secondary data from reports produced by the Apicultural Division of the Apicultural Division of the Research Institute of Horticulture in Puławy that relate to selected issues concerning the beekeeping sector in Poland. The differences in beekeeping in different parts of Poland were subject to one- and two-dimensional analysis. The latter was performed using methods based on the measurements of the depth of observations in the sample. The research demonstrates that the number of bee colonies and the number of beekeepers were on the rise in the studied years. The largest number of bee colonies was observed in Lubelskie, Małopolskie, Podkarpackie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodships, while the largest production of honey was registered in Lubelskie Voivodship.

Accurate and timely measures to preserve the native populations of the wild honey bees need a study on the influence of housing conditions and environmental factors on the quality, productivity and viability of bee colonies. The authors have developed a system for remote monitoring of microclimate parameters of wild bee colonies based on the latest LoRaWAN technology. For studying the monitoring system based on the selected data transmission technology, data collection and transmission devices are implemented in two variants – based on ready-made monoblock devices (Variant 1) and composite devices (Variant 2) based on the Atmega328P microcontroller and photovoltaic power supply system with digital temperature and humidity sensors. Field tests of an experimental remote monitoring system were carried out in actual working conditions without power supply and communication systems. The tests involved 15 monoblock ready-made RAK7204 devices (Variant 1) and nine composite devices (Variant 2) based on the Atmega328P microcontroller. After the tests, Variant 1 was excluded from further use in research due to mass failure. Variant 2 passed the tests and participated in further research. The parameters of the power supply system of measuring devices and gateways are analyzed. The results of year-round monitoring of microclimate parameters of bee colonies were obtained. The study results prove the efficiency of the monitoring system based on LoRaWAN technology with the Atmega328P microcontroller devices and its operation comfort. During the study, it was recorded that the outer air temperature dropped to -36 °C. During the same period, the internal temperature significantly exceeded the air temperature. Besides, the highest temperature in wild hives during the winter months reaches +15 °C and +35.5 °C in the summer months. The temperature difference recorded in winter between the air inside wild hives and outer air reaches Δ30 °С.

In this article, a novel nature-inspired autonomous guidance is investigated regarding the honey bee motion algorithm for aerial robots and fuzzy logic. Combination of the bee al- gorithm and fuzzy logic is proposed to achieve an on-line guidance for methodology of this research. The main idea of this work belongs to a novel analogy between honey bees and aerial robots motions. Moreover, information links between the aerial robots are demon- strated to construct a formation of vehicles by updating motions based on fuzzy decision making. Three dimensional simulations for the aerial robots are considered to show the ef- ficient performance of autonomous guidance. The simulation results show precise ability of the proposed method for aerospace and robotics engineers based on a nature phenomenon to present an innovative guidance method.

The medical application of honey has a long tradition. In antiquity it was used as a potent substance with dietary and medicinal attributes. Based on Celsus’ texts we know that the ancient Romans used honey primarily in treating skin conditions, including inflammations such as Erysipelas, wounds, all types of ulcers and eye diseases. Celsus mentioned honey in numerous formulas, but he did not distinguish between its types or the ways in which it was obtained. More attention was paid to such matters in the following centuries. This can be observed by analysing the formulas included in the works of younger authors.

The bee is above all a model of diligence. Her work is hard, strenuous, full of endure and hardships, but done conscientiously, solidly and systematically. Although a bee is a small animal, it is able to overcome all difficulties in order to perform its tasks. The exceptional wisdom that he possesses is, in a way, a source of strength that allows him to achieve a wonderful fruit of his work and, as a result, to enjoy special recognition among others. The industriousness of bees has been recognized in the pages of Scripture. In Jewish opinion, the bee enjoyed great respect, which is a clear testimony of the greatest authority – the Bible.
Pszczoła jest przede wszystkim wzorem pracowitości. Jej praca jest ciężka, mozolna, pełna znoju i trudów, ale wykonywana sumiennie, solidnie i systematycznie. Chociaż pszczoła jest małym zwierzęciem, potrafi pokonywać wszelkie trudności, aby wykonywać swoje zadania. Wyjątkowa mądrość, jaką posiada, jest dla niej niejako źródłem siły, która pozwala osiągnąć wspaniały owoc podejmowanej pracy, a w konsekwencji cieszyć się szczególnym uznaniem u innych. Pracowitość pszczół została dostrzeżona na kartach Pisma Świętego. Pszczoła w opinii żydowskiej cieszyła się ogromnym szacunkiem, co dobitnie poświadcza największy autorytet – Biblia.

Hydrogel films composed of chitosan and agar or chitosan, agar and honey/bee pollen were prepared; they could be used as active wound dressings. During this study, various types of gel films were prepared using chitosan with different molecular weights and ratios of the two biopolymers. In addition, compositions with different amounts of honey or bee pollen were obtained. The selected samples were characterized by determining typical properties that are important for wound dressings. The best twocomponent films had a chitosan to agar weight ratio of 2:1. From among the examined tri-component films, the 2:1:0.5 weight ratio of chitosan, agar and 50 wt% honey solution was the best composition.

The effects of storing honey for 18 months at room temperature or in a freezer as well as the impact of heating it to different temperatures (30, 40 and 50°C) were studied. The rheological parameters of fresh rapeseed honey were compared to those of the non-stored and unheated samples (control). The storage temperature significantly influenced the rheological behaviour of the honey (except adhesiveness). Higher values of all textural parameters were found in frozen honey in comparison with control and room temperature samples. However, in comparison with the control samples, higher values (around twice) of the dynamic viscosity, firmness, work and adhesive force were produced by honey stored at room temperature. Thermal treatment of the honey heated at 30, 40 and 50°C influenced a continuous decrease in all of the textural properties (with the exception of the cohesive force) compared to the control samples (20°C). The average change in the texture-temperature coefficient for dynamic viscosity, firmness, work, adhesiveness and adhesive force from 20 to 50°C was similar (between 6.62 and 4.09%). Significant, very close and positive Spearmen’s rank correlations (0.894 ≤ rS ≤ 0.987) were observed for dynamic viscosity, firmness, work, adhesiveness and adhesive force. Lower correlations (0.524 ≤ rS ≤ 0.684) were found between the cohesive force and all of the other textural properties.
