From time to time we ask ourselves about the status of our discipline. Th e answers to the questions regarding the methodology of history, the epistemology of history, the theory of history depend on the theoretical presuppositions of the researcher. Th e expectation that there is a single paradigm of research in the history of historiography requires the recognition and consent that there is one single mode of refl ecting on history. In this article, I argue that the history of historiography can be understood as history of historical thinking in all its contexts.

Historians of historiography who seek new possibilities to research the historiographic phenomena believe that the traditional historiography has also become obsolete in its academic form. Th ey think of methods that would allow building a coexistence of the traditional model of historiographic research, which has been simplifi ed to erudite research and presentation of historians – masters with a concept that respects the dynamics of historic thinking, included within the contexts of a political, ideological, and social epoch. Th e latt er task requires from historians of historiography signifi cantly developed professional competences within the scope of sociology, philosophy, and psychology.

In this article the author argues for the rapprochement between the methods and questions of the history of historiography and the questionnaire of the sociology of knowledge. The sociological perspective can inspire both the research on the communities of professional historians and the functioning of the historiographical knowledge in social and political structures. The author analyzes diff erent dimensions of the political functions of historiography and emphasizes the diff erence between the utilitarian and scientific aspects of historical knowledge.

The article discusses the main problems of the contemporary history of historiography. The author states that the greatest problem of historiography in the 21st century is big data. The next important issue are the test methods for big data. One of the paradigms, which att empts to explore the world of big data, is digital history. Therefore, the methods of digital history are presented, including its primary method which is data visualization. Finally, the author argues that big data should become the main subject of study of the modern history of historiography.

The history of historiography as an independent discipline was created in 1948-1958. In the academic year 1957/1958, the Historical Institute established the Department of History of Historiography and Methodology of History Teaching. Th e initiator of its creation and subsequently its fi rst director was Wanda Moszczeńska (1896-1974), a student of Marcel Handelsman (1882-1945). Th e most successful period of the department was 1976-1997, when the Department was led by Jerzy Maternik, a student of Wanda Moszczeńska.

In this article I argue that contemporary researchers in the Lodz historiographic center try to remain faithful to “the historiographic testament” of M. H. Serejski and his disciples. Th e texts of A. Brzezinska, J. Kolbuszewska, R. Stobiecki reveal the continuation of “classical” patt erns of historiographical research. Chronologically, they primarily concern the Polish historiography in the second half of the 19th and in the 20th century and the historiography in other countries – Russia and France – in the 20th century. In contrast to previously published works, our studies focus more oft en on the widely-understood contemporaneity. In particular we are researching women’s history (J. Kolbuszewska, R. Stobiecki), historical anthropology (A. Brzezińska), and the memory and politics of history (R. Stobiecki).

The article consists of three parts. It begins with a short characteristics of the lodz historiographic centre; the Author discusses the three generations of researchers who carried out research in the fi eld at the University of Lodz (UŁ). The purpose of the article is to show comparatistics as a promising perspective of current humanistic research, especially in area of extending possibilities of analysis and interpretation. In times of profesionalization and specialization of knowledge, comparative research are rarely undertaken and for that reason, it makes a cognitively and interpretatively interesting situation. The case analysis applies to using comparative method on the ground of history of historiography (A. Kożuchowski) and literary studies (D. Zawadzka).

The article discusses the issue of teaching the history of historiography in the context of the values and goals that students of history declare as important to them. Based on the survey, it can be stated that for the students of history at AMU two important values are prevalent: intellectual development and work for the benefi t of society (understood as the commemoration of things worth remembering). It is also important for them to acquire skills useful in future work. “The history of historiography” as an academic subject may enable the realization of these values and goals. A lecturer in the history of historiography can show students the relationship of historical knowledge to social problems. She/he can also introduce modern methods of data analysis to present the problem of reception of historiography in the modern world.

The Department of Methodology of History and History of Historiography began functioning at Lublin’s Maria Curie-Skłodowska University Institute of History in 1987. Th e establishment of the Department was initiated by Professor Jan Pomorski, who became its Head and has since held this position. Other faculty members are: Dr Ewa Solska, Dr Hab. Piotr Witek and Dr Hab. Marek Woźniak, Associate Professor.The Department embraces historians, theorists of history science, methodologists of sciences, whose methodological style and training developed under infl uence of the Poznań Methodology School ( Jerzy Topolski, Jerzy Kmita, Anna Pałubicka), Andrzej F. Grabski’s model of history of historiography, Robert A. Rosenstone’s visual history, the social constructivism of Nelson Goodman, Peter L. Berger and Th omas Luckman or Stanley Fish, the neopragmatism of Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam, Th omas Kuhn’s historicism, the poststructuralism of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault, the hermeneutics of Hans Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur, the cognitive grammar of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the narrativism of Hayden White and Franklin Ankersmit, Cliff ord Geertz’s interpretive anthropology, and the tradition of the Lvov Warsaw School (Alfred Tarski, Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz, Roman Ingarden) and analytical philosophy.Th e teachers of the Department of Methodology of History conduct research in the following fi elds: methodology of history, history of historiography, neuroscience in the context of humanistic research, visual history, public history, digital humanities, cognitive science, and contemporary theories of literature. Th ey conduct classes with students in methodology of history, history of historiography, history of philosophy, production of historical films, in designing historical games, knowledge of museums, and introduction to media studies. The Department’s faculty are co-originators and co-authors of programs taught at two specializations in historical studies: Management of Cultural Heritage and Commercialization of Historical Knowledge, and Applied History. Both specializations train and prepare students to practice history in the field of public history.The teachers of the UMCS Department of Methodology of History together with its doctoral and graduate students eff ectively collaborate with many methodological and historiographical centers in Poland and abroad. They successfully develop and bring into effect Professor Jerzy Topolski’s idea of the need to carry out theoretical refl ection on academic historiography (research practice of historians), broadening it with considerations on public history.

The article presents a statistical description and analysis of the academic output of Professor Stanisław Salmonowicz, a historian and lawyer who has long been associated with Toruń. His output consists of c. 1350 publications, including over 60 books, almost 500 scholarly articles and c. 480 book reviews. The chronological framework of Salmonowicz’s scholarly interests ranges from the sixteenth century to the present day and encompasses both the history of Europe (notably the history of France, Austria and Prussia) and history of Poland with particular emphasis on the history of Pomerania and the city of Toruń. An important place in this output is occupied by the history of law and political systems of European countries. Salmonowicz’s academic publications include monographs on, among other things, the Academic Gymnasium in Toruń in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, the codification of penal law in the age of the Enlightened Absolutism, the Polish Underground State of 1939–1945, and the Warsaw Uprising of 1944; as well as numerous scholarly articles on the culture of old Toruń, political and religious matters of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the history of law. Moreover, Salmonowicz is the author of comprehensive books on King Frederick the Great of Prussia and the history of the Prussian state. He has also authored numerous chapters in books published in the series dedicated to the history of Toruń and Pomerania. His works also include many texts that can inspire further academic inquiries. For example, his research into early modern witch trials and the morally questionable attitudes of certain Poles under Nazi and Soviet occupation during the Second World War may be an excellent point of departure for further historical investigations.

The article att empts to defi ne the history of historiography as a subdiscipline of history; it indicates the numerous competences of historians of historiography which are nessesary for undertaking an (auto)refl ection around the history of their discipline, for touching the theoretical and methodological aspects of historiography, and for the study of historicity of historiographical texts. Th e author asks about the current status of the history of historiography and new horizons of research. Regarding the fi eld of changes in the ways of comunication, she sees potential chances for increasing the interest of new recipients in the history of historiography. The author amplifi es the weft of reception, understood as a phenomenon that belongs to the comunication situation occuring between the author of transmission and his recipients. The author refers to the inspiration of the methodological conception of the school of reception aesthetics from Constance (W. Iser, R. Jauss) and the hermeneutics of H-G. Gadamer. Reception is a new concept for presenting the history of historiography as a fi eld of research on the historicity of historical works.
