This article is written in memoriam of Ihor Skochylas, a historian and outstanding researcher. In 1993 he graduated from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. He worked at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and then at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. He was visiting professor at the Ukrainische Freie Universität in Munich. He is the author of 250 scientific publications on the history of the Ternopil region and, above all, the history of the Church in Ukraine in the broader perspective of the history of the First Republic and in connection with the universal Church. Innovative research by Ihor Skoczylas is related to the search for a “mental map”. The book by Ihor Skoczylas, co-authored with A. Gil, entitled “Eastern Churches in the Polish-Lithuanian state” (Lublin-Lviv 2014).

The article presents a photographer from the Polish village Zembrzyce, Piotr Śpiewla, who started his adventure with photography in the 1920s. Trying to rediscover his story, the author confronts his image presented in recently published books with the memories he left in peoples’ minds and the image on photographs. The article presents his local social activity, and shows the surprising place he has gained in the history of his village.

Franciszek Majchrowicz was a renowned Lvov-based educator and a historian of education. Throughout many years of his professional career he was involved in teaching in secondary schools and teachers’ training colleges. At the same time, he was actively participating in educational initiatives as an activist. Majchrowicz was a co-editor of the periodical Rodzina i Szkoła [Family and School], co-operated with the Council of National Education in Galicia (Eastern Poland) and with the School Board of the Lvov province. His publishing output included numerous articles and pedagogical texts as well as historical and educational works, including one of the first textbooks for teaching history of education in teachers’ training colleges (with many editions throughout the years 1901-1924). Majchrowicz also published source materials for the history of Polish education, promoted the educational ideas of the Commission of National Education and attempted to develop the history of education into a coherent academic discipline for researchers and a subject in the national curriculum for educators. The hitherto available historical and educational literature lacks comprehensive and detailed information on his university education or professional training and qualifications. The present work attempts by no means to be exhaustive or to offer a comprehensive coverage of a full biography of Franciszek Majchrowicz as an educator and historian of education. It merely complements some facts and explanations that have already been published earlier, and provides some new information that may help resolve doubts concerning certain aspects of his professional career presented in the hitherto published body of works on the subject. It is mostly due to the archival material from Lvov (this mainly comprises students catalogues and minute books of doctoral examinations from the National District Archive), constituting the source base for the present work, that providing complete answers to such issues as the course of Majchrowicz’s studies, his doctoral dissertation procedure and the scope of his teacher’s examination, have become possible. The above source material made it also possible to conclude with certain remarks regarding the masters Majchrowicz had in great esteem and their influence upon research and academic interests of the Lvov-based educator and historian of education.

Świętosław Orzelski (1549–1598), Starost of Radziejów, actively participated in the political life of the noblemen’s Republic of Poland as a parliamentary activist and Member of Parliament. As a deputy he participated in 13 sessions of Parliament, including 6 sessions during the rule of Stefan Batory and 7 ones in the reign of Sigismund III Vasa. He was a talented politician, continuing the best traditions of the execution faction. As one of the seniors of the Augsburg denomination, he belonged to the group of leaders in the fight for religious tolerance. His historical work under the title Acta interregni post obitum nimirum Sigismundi Augusti remained in the form of manuscript for many years. It was not published in the Polish translation until the 19th century by Włodzimierz Spasowicz, and in its original form by Edward Kuntze in 1917. At present, a new edition of the work by Świętosław Orzelski is being prepared. In the first place, an introductory volume will be published, containing Orzelski’s biography, his speeches and letters dedicated to public matters.

'Spain: Adolf Pawiński’s letters from his travels in Spain' was written in 1880. We are not dealing with a perieghesis in the nature of a scientific report or a sightseeing guide, but with a collection of texts written with the Polish reader in mind. The correspondence was to be published in the Warsaw press. This explains the volume’s character, content, and form. Pawiński wanted to give a complete picture of Spain, which he visited primarily as a historian, archivist, and tourist. Knowledge of the Spanish language allowed him to get closer to the Spanish world and understand it better. The description of the country is picturesque and, at the same time, historical. In Pawiński’s view, Spain is an “agglomerate”. The image of Spain is multi-faceted, based on knowledge and expressing his fascination with writing.

Apparently we could postulate in this moment the model of a historian as “a translator and mediator” between cultures, recognizing their “grammars”, and his obligation to create the common social capital. Nevertheless the scientifi c refl ection upon the politicization of history and the methodology of contemporary historiography is the matt er in dispute. Th erefore Pomorski’s suggestion of the more complex cognitive approach in the historiographical research (and historical discourse) should be taken into consideration.

Jerzy Teofil Szews, Ph.D., was born in Gniezno in 1925. After studies at the Poznań University he worked as a teacher in secondary pedagogical schools in Szklarska Poreba, Lebork, and Wejherowo. Following his academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1967 from the Pedagogical University in Gdansk, he was a professor at the Pedagogical University and the University of Gdansk. He was an eminent biographer, a researcher of ‘the unknown history’ concerning Germanisation of the Polish youth in West Prussia’s secondary schools. He also studied the history of the Philomath Society (a secret Polish student organization operating in the early 19th century in Vilnius under Russian occupation), the beginnings of the secret scouting movement in the Pomerania-upon-Vistula Region (an area south of Gdansk, including Bydgoszcz and Torun), and the history of education and upbringing in Gdansk Pomerania. He wrote 11 books and hundreds of articles.

W. Moszczeńska (1896–1974) signifi cantly contributed to the early Polish history of historiography as a distinctive historical subdiscipline. Working together with M.H. Serejski, she created a strong theoretical base for its further development. She argued for considering the history of historical learning in connection with other trends of historical thought. Initially, she att ached most importance to ideological problems, later (aft er 1956) she brought to the fore the issues of methodological and methodical workshop. She treated the history of historiography as an area and a tool of methodological refl ection. Her considerations regarding the use of various types of sources in historiographical research are still in many cases valid and highly inspirational.

Aim: The presented essay was prepared in connection with the 91st birthday anniversary of Prof. Karol Poznański, which falls in February 2022. Over 60 years of acquaintance with the professor prompted the author to reflect on his rich, many-sided personality. Methods: In order to present his profile and evaluation, a retrospective analysis of the images preserved in the author’s memory of the professor’s behaviour towards both colleagues, staff and students was used. Synthesising and evaluating the scientific achievements of the distinguished jubilarian was to some extent facilitated by the reference books, especially publications directly dedicated to him. Results: The profile of Prof. Poznański has been presented based on personal memories and literature. Conclusions: In the era of confusion of notions and values, concerning also many representatives of the academic teachers, the presentation of the professor’s profile was considered necessary for cognitive and application reasons.

The historian in the contemporary Poland has to fulfil not only the tasks on his workplace, commonly at a state university or in a research institute but he has also commitments which result from the traditional ethos of a man of science. In the public sphere he has to deal with historical politics created by the state and the political forces immediately, which cannot actually be influenced by the scientific circles in a relevant way. The political forces await from the historian the disclosure of such a “truth” which would interpret the existing reality as the possible space for creation of that what ought to be. The associational scientific movement as a traditionally autonomous body concerned with population of knowledge has in this situation the chance and the not utterly fulfilled task of defending of the historical truth, conditioned and determined with the contemporary theory of knowledge.
