Opis:
The aim of the article is to examine the process of spatial development in Oviedo in the Middle Ages, with a particular focus on the formation of urban squares. Oviedo is – in terms of Spanish urbanism – a special example, as it belongs to one of the first cities built on raw roots. During the Middle Ages it was an important administrative, religious and political center. Until 910 it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias, and although it later lost this status to León, by the end of the thirteenth century, it was indeed a fully developed and important city. Like Santiago de Compostela, Oviedo had a strong sacred character, which in turn determined its spatial organization. As far as the spatial development is concerned, a well-thought-out spatial concept developed in the Middle Ages, which, although partially modified, has been preserved until today, deserves special attention. It is particularly interesting to look at open spaces and the process of their formation and transformation. These squares still function today in the same places.

Celem artykułu jest przyjrzenie się procesowi kształtowania Santiago de Compostela w średniowieczu ze zwróceniem szczególnej uwagi na formowanie się placów miejskich[1]. Analizowane miasto stanowi szczególny przypadek w historii urbanistyki hiszpańskiej, ponieważ powstało ex novo, co oznacza, że nie występują w nim warstwy zabudowy rzymskiej, czy arabskiej. Ponadto wyznaczony w tamtym okresie układ historycznego centrum dotrwał do naszych czasów bez większych zmian. Nie mniej istotna jest rola placów w strukturze Santiago Compostela. Od samego początku, czyli pojawiania się pierwszego obiektu sakralnego z relikwiami, stanowiły one nieodłączny element przestrzeni miejskiej pełniąc wielorakie funkcje. Do dzisiaj definiują miejską tożsamość. Ich ilość, wielkość oraz znaczenie podkreślają wyjątkowość obiektów architektonicznych, historii miejsca, a także samego centrum. Spojrzenie na genezę formowania placów miejskich we wspomnianym ośrodku hiszpańskim, dostrzeżenie ich specyfiki, a także dynamiki kształtowania a następnie zwrócenie uwagi na ciągłość formalno-funkcjonalną świadczącą o ich ponadczasowości może przyczynić się do lepszego zrozumienia współczesnej przestrzeni publicznej, stanowiącej od wieków integralny element życia mieszkańców miast.
The article analyzes the process of shaping Santiago de Compostela in the Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on the formation of city squares. This city is a special case in the history of Spanish urban planning because it was built ex novo, which means that there are no layers of Roman or Arab buildings in it. Moreover, the layout of the historic center, determined at that time, has survived to our times without major changes. The role of squares in the structure of Santiago de Compostela is no less important. From the very beginning of the formation of the spatial structure, they were an inseparable element of the urban space, performing multiple functions. To this day, they define urban identity. Their number, size and importance emphasize the uniqueness of architectural objects, the history of the place and the center itself. The article describes the formation of city squares in Santiago, emphasizes their specificity, as well as the aspect of their formal and functional continuity. Historical, iconographic and cartographic sources were used in the research.

The notion of history of philosophy is initiated by Bocheński by presentation of the notion of history itself which, according to him for the fact of treating the past („that what happened”), has two meanings: subject meaning (past events) and object meaning (historiosophy). Both of them can be further divided into two parts: history of facts and history of doctrines. History of philosophy is a typical history of doctrines. The second element of the name „history of philosophy”- which is philosophy-is etymologically linked to wisdom, present in numerous meanings: in antiquity its was simply a synonim of science. In the Middle Ages we observe division of human knowledge to revealed knowledge and natural knowledge, the latter one, in its aspect of exploring the ultimate principles and causes is called philosophy. In modern times philosophy was questioned at all or the entire science was included in its scope. For that reason Bocheński establishes the set of topics which are constantly present in the history of philosophy and which can be classified as strictly philosophical issues. They are: 1) the question of cognition (can we cognize truth?); 2) the question of science; 3) ontological issues (universalities, existence or non-existence of plurality); 4) questions of relation of science and psychic; 5) axiological issues (ethics, esthetics, philosophy of religion); 6) the question of absolute (God, eternal matter). Bocheński stresses that questions proper to philosophy can not be classified as one of the science and, what is more, contemporary methodology of science will rather not change this situation. Striking in that presentation is the lack of issues regarding philosophy of being (existence, essence, substance, accidental properties, relations, causes) with little exemption of philosophy of being inc-luded in the question of absolute. When it comes to division of history of philosophy, we may say that according to Bocheński it should follow analogically the traditional division of the European history such as classic, medieval, modern and contemporary times

Szczegółowa analiza kampanii wojennych zazwyczaj obejmuje kwestie związane z taktyką, walką, uzbrojeniem czy pochodzeniem żołnierzy. Mniej popularne są natomiast takie zagadnienia, jak np. przemieszczenia armii, obozowanie czy życie koszarowe/garnizonowe. Stosunkowo dobrze zachowane materiały źródłowe dotyczące letniej kampanii wojennej przeprowadzonej w 1538 r. przeciw Mołdawii pozwalają na dokładne odtworzenie trasy, a właściwie tras przemarszu oddziałów koronnych z miejsc lustracji pod zamek chocimski. Choć armia koronna w tej kampanii nie stanowiła homogenicznej grupy (pod względem przynależności do formacji, stosowanych armatur, pochodzenia społecznego czy terytorialnego), to warto zwrócić uwagę na jej aktywność, ponieważ może ona stać się podstawą do szerszego wnioskowania, również w odniesieniu do innych kontekstów geograficznych i chronologicznych.
Analysis of war campaigns usually are relating to the tactic, fight, weapon or origins of the soldiers. Not so popular issues are for example translocations of armies, everyday life in the war camp or in the garrisons. Military documentation concerning the crown army of 1538 campaign preserved almost completely in the collection of the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. It gives possibility of analysis of way, or rather ways, of march Polish army from Lwów to Chocim castle. The crown army in this campaign was not a homogeneous by organisation, arms and armour, equipment or origins of the soldiers. Despite this it is a good example to wide conclusions also in other geographical and chronological contexts.

Rev. Konstanty Michalski, CM, (1879–1947), a philosopher, historian of philosophy, professor and rector of the Jagiellonian University as well as an active member of the Historical-Philosophical Department of the Polish Academy of Learning; he was chairman of the Commission of the History of Philosophy in Poland and Vice-Director of the Department. He experienced the horrors of the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen near Berlin. Michalski’s academic achievements in the field of the history of medieval thought include three thematic groups: Polish philosophy, Western philosophy and philosophical-theological thought of Dante Alighieri.While investigating the 14th century philosophical trends and problems of Scholasticism, Michalski concluded that the dynamics of mediaeval thought was strictly related to the reception of Aristotle’s works and their Arabic and Greek commentators. Together with Aleksander Birkenmajer he put forward a project of a critical edition of the Latin translations of Aristotle’s works, Latin translations of the Arabic and Jewish thinkers as well as the best medieval commentaries on the works of the Stagirite and independent philosophical treatises. On behalf of the Polish Academy of Learning Michalski presented a project of the editorial series Corpus Philosophorum Medii Aevii to the Union Académique Internationale (International Union of Academies) in Brussels in 1928. The Union accepted the proposal of the two medievalists from Kraków in 1930. Michalski gave great impetus to Aristotelian studies, which made medievalists continue their work until today. Corpus Philosophorum Medii Aevii is the most significant and greatest contribution to research on mediaeval thought, continued by scientific centres in Poland and abroad. Michalski reached the conclusion that only getting familiar with the main Western trends would allow him to fathom the doctrinal currents of Polish medieval philosophy. From 1920, he stopped investigating Polish Scholasticism and began seeking its sources in the main trends of Western philosophy of the 14 century. He was not so much interested in schools and systems as in the issues discussed in the 14th century, their formulations and proposed solutions.Michalski was the first Polish scholar who raised research on the history of philosophy to a European level by investigating the sources and carrying out independent studies on fields that had been little known or examined. At the same time, he was the first Polish scholar who explored the main trends in the 14th century philosophy in France and England, contributing to European science to a considerable extent. His achievements are permanent and notable. He studied from the historical-critical perspective over 360 philosophical texts in Polish, English, French, German and Italian libraries. He showed numerous parallels, analogies and similarities in problem-doctrinal areas between medieval philosophy on the one hand and modern and contemporary philosophy on the other. The outcome of his research activities has been included permanently in fundamental textbooks for medieval philosophy.
Ksiądz Konstanty Michalski CM (1879–1947), filozof, historyk filozofii, profesor i rektor Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, członek czynny Wydziału Historyczno-Filozoficznego Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności był przewodniczącym jej Komisji Historii Filozofii w Polsce i wicedyrektorem Wydziału Historyczno-Filozoficznego. Przeżył gehennę więźnia niemieckiego obozu koncentracyjnego w Sachsenhausen koło Berlina. W dorobku naukowym Michalskiego w zakresie historii myśli średniowiecznej wyraźnie zarysowują się trzy grupy tematyczne: filozofia polska, filozofia zachodnioeuropejska i myśl filozoficzno-teologiczna Dantego Alighieri.Badania nurtów myślowych XIV wieku i problemów filozofii scholastycznej upewniły Michalskiego w przekonaniu, że dynamika średniowiecznego życia umysłowego była ściśle związana z recepcją dzieł Arystotelesa i ich arabskich i greckich komentatorów. Wraz z Aleksandrem Birkenmajerem wysunął projekt krytycznego wydania średniowiecznych łacińskich przekładów Arystotelesa, łacińskich tłumaczeń myślicieli arabskich i żydowskich i najlepszych średniowiecznych komentarzy do dzieł Stagiryty oraz samodzielnych traktatów filozoficznych. Projekt serii wydawniczej Corpus Phílosophorum Medii Aevii Michalski przedłożył w 1928 roku w imieniu Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności obradującej w Brukseli Union Académique International, która w 1930 roku przyjęła propozycję obydwóch mediewistów krakowskich. Michalski nadał badaniom nad arystotelizmem podejmowanym przez światową mediewistykę taki rozmach, że trwają one po dzień dzisiejszy. Zainicjowany przez niego Corpus Philosophorum Medii Aevii stanowi najtrwalszy i największy wkład do badań nad myślą średniowieczną, kontynuowanych przez ośrodki naukowe w Polsce i zagranicą. Michalski w swoich badaniach doszedł do wniosku, że dogłębne poznanie prądów doktrynalnych w polskiej filozofii średniowiecznej jest możliwe dopiero po uprzednim zaznajomieniu się z głównymi nurtami myślowymi Zachodu. Od 1920 roku poniechał niemal całkowicie dalszych badań nad scholastyką polską, przeszedł do poszukiwania jej źródeł i podjął studia nad głównymi prądami filozofii zachodnioeuropejskiej XIV stulecia. W swych badaniach interesował się nie szkołami, nie systemami filozoficznymi, ale przede wszystkim zagadnieniami podejmowanymi w XIV stuleciu, ich sformułowaniami oraz proponowanymi dla nich rozwiązaniami.Michalski był pierwszym w Polsce uczonym, który badania w zakresie historii filozofii postawił na europejskim poziomie, sięgając wprost do źródeł i prowadząc studia samodzielnie na odcinkach przed nim mało zbadanych lub prawie nieznanych. Był zarazem pierwszym uczonym polskim, który pracując nad wyjaśnieniem głównych prądów w filozofii późniejszego średniowiecza na terenie Francji i Anglii w wieku XIV, wniósł w tej dziedzinie trwały i istotny dorobek w naukę europejską. W bibliotekach polskich, angielskich, francuskich, niemieckich i włoskich przebadał pod względem historyczno-krytycznym ponad 360 rękopisów filozoficznych. Wykazał wiele zbieżności problemowo-doktrynalnych, analogii i pokrewieństw występujących pomiędzy filozofią średniowieczną a nowożytną i współczesną. Na trwałe wszedł do fundamentalnych podręczników filozofii średniowiecznej.

Biblical glossary as a research problemThe Biblical glossary is one of the most important phenomena in the history of medieval scholarship, it combines the text of the Scriptures with a commentary in a special graphic layout. It played an important part in the popularisation of the Biblical studies. The glossary appeared around the turn of the twelve century in northern France in the milieu of cathedral school at Laon, with the key figure of Master Anselm. Already before the mid-twelve century glosses to individual books of the Bible gained huge popularity, and had hundreds of copies. At a certain time – it is thought today that it was the early thirteenth century – the text of the Glossary got stabilised. And although in the thirteenth century its popularity began to fade, it was copied to the end of the medieval period, and then many times published in print.Modern research into the glossary, although initiated in the nineteenth century, has in fact been developed in the 1980s. But ambitious source research and comparative analyses have shown that the Biblical glossary is a very difficult discipline. It was comparatively easy for researchers to have got through hagiographical legends that grew up around the glossary (for example the alleged authorship of Walafrid Strabon), but despite all the efforts only one book (Song of Songs) and some other fragments were published in a critical edition. In the course of ongoing studies more and more apparently “sure” points in our knowledge about the glossary are discredited, such as, for instance, the conviction that the glossary text had stabilised at one point of time. What hampers the research is mainly an enormous number of manuscript copies containing glosses, amounting to thousands of them. What is more, the production of those manuscripts was strictly standardised, making it difficult to establish not only their actual chronology, but also their place of origin. The research into the Biblical glossary is still a growing field of study.

The translocation of the mercenary army in Poland of the last Jagiellons, expect for days of the Prussian War (1519–1521), came at the east frontiers of Polish-Lithuanian monarchy. That was the reason, why mercenaries had to cover the long, even several hundred kilometres distances, just to get through to expanse of campaign. By extention, the mercenary army did the huge marchpastes, even from the today point of view. Essential mean of transport, which was used in the transport of war commodity, were wagons drawn by carthorses. This article is mainly dedicated to horse-drawn cart at wagon forts, theirs construction, the organising of march-pastes and using them as a combat tools.
Przemieszczenie armii zaciężnej w Polsce ostatnich Jagiellonów, za wyjątkiem wojny pruskiej (1519–1521), następowało na wschodnich rubieżach monarchii polsko-litewskiej. Implikowało to konieczność pokonywania nawet kilkusetkilometrowych dystansów jedynie w celu dotarcia do obszaru lub teatru działań wojennych. Armia zaciężna dokonywała więc, nawet z dzisiejszego punktu widzenia, ogromnych przemarszów. Podstawowym środkiem transportowym stosowanym dla materiałów wojennych były wozy zaprzęgane w konie pociągowe. Artykuł omawia głównie wozy konne (taborowe), ich konstrukcję, organizację przemarszu oraz wykorzystanie ich jako środka bojowego.
