    This article discusses Hermann Hesse’s short trip to Asia in 1911 and its peculiar symbolism. The trip created an area of references which he used in his writing. He transformed experience of this trip and expectations connected therewith artistically and philosophically, building a special variation of the topos of the way to the East. This topos was widely employed in the times of counterculture, which had transformed it in its own way, but it is still vital today.

It also focuses on “minor”, lesser known and difficult to classify work by Hesse.

    This article focuses on conjugal abstinence in the teaching of the great Polish theologian, Benedict Hesse, who lived and worked in Cracow during the fifteenth century. In his work Commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew, Hesse focuses his discussion on chastity and conjugal abstinence in the context of several other subjects, including: the superiority of virginity over marriage; the superiority of virginal chastity over conjugal abstinence; the issue of assessing the pleasure of conjugal sexual intercourse; matters pertaining to modesty of the spouses and their exterior appearance; as well as castration for the Kingdom of Heaven. The issues that Hesse raises in relation to chastity and conjugal abstinence might bring a smile to a contemporary reader’s face, since they seem mostly anecdotal and basic. This article is not a complete and systematic lecture on conjugal abstinence.

    This paper analyses Hermann Hesse’s novel Demian in the context of Jungian psychological archetypes. Hesse’s in-depth interest in psychoanalysis is evident in his works. The content of Demian was particularly influenced by Carl Jung’s psychoanalytic concepts since the author had undergone Jungian psychoanalytic treatment prior to writing the novel. The paper claims that most major characters in Demian are in fact personifications of Jungian archetypes of: self, shadow, and anima. It is indicated that it would be impossible to understand the novel properly without basic knowledge of these archetypes. It is demonstrated that Demian is in fact a novel dealing with the inner psychological development of an individual even though it may not appear so if the characters and events are interpreted literally.

    W artykule omówiono historię powstania kościoła św. Anny w Annabergu. Na tle historii miasta autorka przedstawia ikonografię Ołtarza Gwarków (Bergknappschaftsaltar) w kościele św. Anny w Annabergu, namalowanego przez warsztat Hansa Hessego, po 1521 roku. Głównym ikonograficznym tematem ołtarza jest legenda proroka Daniela zapisana w „Nützlich Bergbüchleyn“ Ulricha Rüleina von Calw. Ukazana ona została na tle szybów wydobywczych oraz warsztatów zajmujących się wzbogacaniem rudy i biciem monet.
    Afterwards rich silver veins were discovered under the Schrekenberg Mountains (1491-1492) as well as settlement related to the other activities. The silver and tin mining industry in the Ore Mountains range began in the early 12th century. With the further settlement of the Ore Mountains in the 15th century new rich ore deposits were eventually discovered around Schneeberg (1470-1477) and Annaberg (1491-1492). In 1496, a settlement was found on the site of the “Schreckenberg” silver mine called the New Town. Master Ulrich Rülein von Calv helped during its location. This settlement was promoted to the status of a city by the decision of Duke Georg der Bärtige and the new town was named Annaberg. The city centre was going to be St. Anne´s Church founded by the Duke which was meant to become the heart of the Saint’s cult in the Ore Mountains. Conrad Pflüger, who started the building in 1499, participated in the construction, and Jacob Heylmann von Schweinfurt completed the project in 1525. This church, ranking itself among the most important late gothic buildings, was a clear manifesto of Duke´s wealth and power ever since it was erected. The interior is decorated with three gorgeous altars including the Bergknappschaftsaltar with the reverse side adorned with paintings originating from the Hans Hesse´s workshop (past 1521). The central idea of these paintings, dedicated to mining industry at first glance, is the legend of the prophet Daniel that was very popular in the German milieu (its literary adaptation written by Ulrich Rülein von Calw was reprinted several times – one of them not long before the discussed paintings came into existence). The legend itself talks about the angel giving Daniel advice on where the underground concealed treasure (precious metals) could be found. Master Rülein added the character of Daniel´s apprentice Knapius to whom, in this adapted version, Daniel handed over all his knowledge on mining industry. Apart from the figures of an angel, the prophet Daniel and his apprentice Knapius we can see St. Wolfgang, saint patron of mineworkers, walking among miners with his attribute, an axe. The remainder of the altar-boards are dedicated to particular mining operating procedures. The “predella” depicts the process of cleaning silver which is an important evidence of women’s role in the mining industry. The left altar wing bears the image of people at a melting furnace and the left wing is a mint with the scene of mintage. In the background of the middle panel there are the gallows reminding the viewer to follow laws and warning that any law breaking shall be deservedly punished. The message of the Bergknappschaftaltar was closely connected to important events in history. The city, as well as its ruler, refused to accept Martin Luther´s ideas and held on the ‘old’ faith while at the same time, the local society had to face up the huge expansion of the recently founded city of Jáchymov which, following in the footsteps of the family of Earl Šlik, adopted the Luther´s doctrine from it onset. Today the Bergknappschaftaltar can be understood as an expression of the Annaberg mining workers’ respect to traditions on two levels, the sacred and the profane.

    The article deals with the question about Mary Magdalene composed by Benedict Hesse of Cracow (ca. 1389–1456), Professor of Theology at the University of Cracow: it presents a study of the question and a critical edition of the text. The author addresses the question of attribution of the analyzed text and examines the dating of the text, establishing the terminus post quem et ante quem as 1431–1449. In the question, Hesse asks if Mary Magdalene committed a carnal sin. The medieval theologian analyzes the arguments for and against, and according to the long exegetic tradition concludes that Mary Magdalene committed a sin and is a conversion model for sinners. Hesse specifies that this question should be debated only at the university and not in the churches to avoid scandalizing the faithful.
    Artykuł prezentuje kwestię teologiczną dotyczącą Marii Magdaleny skomponowaną przez Benedykta Hessego z Krakowa (ok. 1389–1456), profesora teologii na Uniwersytecie Krakowskim, oraz zawiera wydanie krytyczne omawianego tekstu. Autor artykułu analizuje kwestię atrybucji i datacji tekstu, wyznaczając terminus post quem et ante quem na lata 1431–1449. W swojej kwestii Hesse bada, czy Maria Magdalena popełniła grzech cielesny. Średniowieczny teolog analizuje argumenty za i przeciw i zgodnie z długą tradycją egzegetyczną stwierdza, że święta dopuściła się grzechu, a jej późniejsza postawa jest wzorem nawrócenia dla grzeszników. Hesse stwierdza, że kwestia ta powinna być omawiana jedynie w salach akademickich, a nie na ambonach w kościołach, by uniknąć zgorszenia wiernych.

    W artykule podjęto rozważania na temat aktualności krytycznych uwag wobec społeczeństwa zawartych w powieści Hermanna Hessego Gra szklanych paciorków, a przede wszystkim w odniesieniu do potrzeby odbudowy kultury poprzez (samo)rozwój człowieka. Autorka udowadnia, że losy głównego bohatera powieści, Józefa Knechta, znoszą prymat rozumu nad emocjami i manifestują jedność obu właściwości rodzaju ludzkiego.
    The article reflects on the topicality of critical remarks towards society contained in Hermann Hesse's novel The Glass Bead Game, and above all in relation to the need to rebuild culture through human (self-)development. It is proved that the fate of the novel's main character, Joseph Knecht, abolishes the primacy of reason over emotion and manifests the unity of both properties of the human race.
    Der Beitrag reflektiert die Aktualität der gesellschaftskritischen Äußerungen in Hermann Hesses Roman Das Glasperlenspiel, vor allem in Bezug auf die Notwendigkeit des Wiederaufbaus der Kultur durch (Selbst-)Entwicklung der Menschen. Es wird nachgewiesen, dass das Schicksal der Hauptfigur des Romans, Joseph Knecht, den Vorrang der Vernunft vor den Emotionen aufhebt und die Einheit beider Eigenschaften der menschlichen Rasse manifestiert.

    The author is showing the history of the important gentry family from Hesse, of which numerous representatives came to the monastic state in Prussia. This paper has a double character, is linking deliberations of genealogical issues with the historical-legal presentation. The last is necessary at discussing offices and their competence, in relation to persons from the von Hattstein family who held them. The special place was devoted Kuno von Hattsteinowi, which in the end one of the highest monastic offices, that is the office of the Great Marshal performed the 14th century. Genealogical tables are complementing the work.
    Der Autor stellt die Geschichte eines wichtigen hessischen Adelsgeschlechtes vor, dessen zahlreiche Vertreter in den Deutschordensstaat in Preußen gekommen waren. Die Arbeit hat einen doppelten Schwerpunkt, sie verbindet Überlegungen zu genealogischen Fragen mit rechtshistorischen Betrachtungen. Letzteres ist erforderlich bei der Besprechung der Ämter und ihrer Kompetenzen, in Bezug auf Personen aus dem Geschlecht der von Hattsteins, die diese ausübten. Besonders viel Raum ist Kuno von Hattstein gewidmet, der Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts eines der wichtigsten Ämter des Ordens innehatte, nämlich das des Ordensmarschalls. Ahnentafeln vervollständigen die Arbeit.

    Opis:
    An author is a Polish professor of literature at the Jagiellonian Unversity in Cracow. The author shows in her book entitled The Reading "Sacred" some essays on literature and "sacred", especially she describes some Polish poetry and prose and literary letters from 20th century. She focuses on the problem hermeneutics of a text, comparatistics of literature and methodology of literature. There are many chapters on theme Polish poetry or prose, e.g. about such authors as Stanisław Barańczak, Teresa Ferenc, Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Julia Hartwig, Zbigniew Herbert, Zbigniew Jankowski, Wojciech Kudyba, Maria Kuncewiczowa, Czesław Miłosz, Joanna Pollakówna, Tadeusz Różewicz, Wisława Szymborska, Marcin Świetlicki, Jan Twardowski, Karol Wojtyła, Adam Zagajewski. There are some essays about foreign (e.g. French, German, Russian) authors of literature in the context of ‘sacred’: Paul Auster, Georges Bernanos, Josif Brodski, Hermann Hesse, Thomas Merton, Rainer Maria Rilke.
