Opis:
Odysseus or in Latin, Ulysses, is kind of literary character who, by his special qualities and his adventures, gives writers many possibilities of variation in reworking the myth. The demand of the audience as well as the authors’ desire for originality provide the main motive of the myth to be presented in a new way. Thanks to it, every writer, who undertakes a piece of work, tries to produce a new portrait of the well-known mythical hero. The source of variation in the myth can also be the natural tendency of authors to assimilate the old material to contemporary fashions and customs1. Problems of morality must have also arisen in the development of the myth over the centuries. Another cause of change in the traditional material lies in the writer’s technical inventions. All of these factors are interesting enough to the present author in presenting the many faces of the Homeric hero, Odysseus, which have changed over the course of time.

Popularity of horror story for adult readers contributed to the fact that in the years 2000-2015 increased a number of children’s books referring to the horror novel and incredible story. The transfer of formula is connected with the repetition of motifs, parody, using the gallery of monsters. Children’s heroes of horror for immature audience are confronted with anxiety represented by monsters, experiencing numerous adventures, oscillating between horror and comic. New experiences lead to gain valuable skills and meeting with monsters leads to self -acceptance and self-development.

On the basis of the basic concepts of carnivalization of Mikhail Bakhtin, features of the functioning of the mask image are considered, which is one of the means of expressing new forms of communication with the recipient and the metaphorical language. The mask in the experimental / avant-garde works determines the individual characters of the characters, contributes to the irony of the grotesque. The mask-stereotype in the novel by Witold Gombrowich is the bearer of a certain set of values of the hero, Geo Shkurupii through the mask of the death of the hero demonstrates the existential choice of the hero.

The analysis of these sources shows that the “Smolensk myth” has been born, fully formed (with all the ideas and motifs we can see today), almost immediately after the crash.

Pacho, the Brigand of Hybe (dir. Martin Ťapák, 1975) was announced in the press as the first truly Slovak comedy. In fact, it is a parody of the theme of brigands. Brigands’s topic was present in the Slovak cinema from its origins. From the first story Jánošík (1921) to the superproduction under the same title made by Paľo Bielik (1962–1963), the problem has always expressed the idea of freedom of the ever subdued, tormented Slovak people. Pacho, as a parody refers not only – or not so much – to the legend of brigands, as to the superproduction directed by Bielik, the giant of Slovak film history.

The authoress analyses that odium’s causes, but first of all, with regard to various thinkers, she tries to bring out the essence of tragic viewpoint, often represented in a simplified way as a synonym of pessimism and martyrdom. In the article problems of the tragic are considered in context of the tragedy as dramatic species, human relation to the fate, characteristics of the tragic hero, the issue of human finiteness, rationalism’s limitations, the matter of transcendence and self-transcendence. Lastly, it is demonstrated that despite the accentuation of individual experience and coping with fate, the tragic viewpoint has the community potential. In conclusion, the openness to “tragic knowledge” is shown as a chance to reinterpret contemporary culture as well as a chance of the integral experience.

Contemporary “war prose” contains works on both the Second World War and the subsequent conflicts in Afghanistan and Chechnya. The aim of the article is to analyse the changes of the war hero myth in autobiographical texts of the wars’ participants. Among the authors are Oleg Yermakov, Zachar Prilepin, Arkady Babchenko. As we find out, the contemporary “war narrative” is interwoven with the lack of ideology and patriotic pathos. A soldier fails to accept his war; moreover, he questions the authorities in their decision to break out the military conflict. In these conditions, it is difficult to make heroic acts and sacrifice for the good of the homeland.

Politics appears to have a direct impact on the quality of our lives as citizens of states. We outline here the dependence between culture and its inherent mechanism of forgetting, and between a hero and a political subject. We employ the theory of Juri Lotman, who underlines the role of individuals and of single events in culture. The primary illustration given is the figure of Lech Wałęsa, politician, legendary co-founder of the Solidarity trade union, and Nobel Peace Prize winner. He exemplifies Lotman’s notion of a mobile hero, one who powered the course of history, but whose present-day political and social activity is of an empty and querulous nature, lacking a goal and deeper meaning, while the actions he performs take place within a closed semantic field. He is an example of a paradoxical hero, whose actions no longer generate tensions or build a new semiotic quality. Wałęsa’s problem is the ossification of his discourse and failure to perceive that transformation has already taken place.

The article considers two types of consciousness, which are typical of Dostoyevsky's heroes. The first type searches for support in human mind. However, individualism of the modern person leads him to revolt against the world, and gives rise to solitude and isolation in the "underground". Such rational thinking creates deadly deadlock to the existence of the human. The second type of consciousness is mythological. It is also connected with the inevitability of death which is, however, a condition of the subsequent revival and the rebirth, allowing the person to see the world differently.

Opis:
The Akritic Hero in Byzantine and Macedonian Epic PoetryComparative analysis of the most prominent heroic characters of Byzantine (Armouris and Digenes) and Macedonian (King Marko) epic poetry uncovers numerous contact points that reveal the close relation between these two cultures over a longer period of time. By using the term “akritic hero” or border warrior in Byzantine and the term kraishnik in Macedonian epic poetry, the paper analyses the relation between these two representations of the same type of epic hero. Complex concordance is explored on several levels which illustrate several characteristic features of the Byzantine akritic heroes Digenes and King Marko in traditional Macedonian epic poetry. Both Digenes and Marko are lone horsemen roaming in restricted territory (Cappadocia andMacedonia), they fight as individuals with distinguished opponents and even with armies, and win the fights, slay the dragon in identical manner, there are occurrences of child-heroes in the songs and the institution of avunculate is particularly emphasised in the act of initiation etc. Unlike monolithic character of Homeric heroes, in Byzantine and Macedonian epic poetry both Digenes and Marko are significantly more complex and occasionally inconsistent characters which is due to their centuries-long shaping in territories where different cultural influences are interwoven. Bohater z pogranicza w bizantyjskiej i macedońskiej poezji epickiejAnaliza komparatystyczna najbardziej wyrazistych postaci w bizantyjskiej (Armuris i Digenis) i macedońskiej (Królewicz Marko) epice ujawnia szereg punktów wspólnych, co świadczy o bliskich kontaktach pomiędzy tymi dwiema kulturami w długim okresie czasu.

Opis:
The text deals with the fragmentary issue of Piotr Skarga’s iconography which is the artistic legacy of the anniversaries celebrated in 1912 and 2012. The remembrance of this Jesuit’s death one hundred years ago stirred up many emotions. It was visible in, for instance, mass manifestations, books, theatre performances or the creations of fine arts. In the reality of the beginnings of the 20th century, what was important was the impact of the image created by Jan Matejko as well as its ideological, virtually mystical, background. This jubilee, celebrated one hundred years ago, has left numerous traces in the arts, some of which have not been retained to this day. The medal by Witold Bieliński; the bust sculptured by Władysław Mazur and Jan Tombiński; or the exquisite bas-relief by Luna Drexler on the Lvov Latin Cathedral were characteristic of those times. However, the level of those works is contrasted with the quality and number of creations dedicated to Skarga during the last anniversary. Both the postage stamp issued by the Polish Postal Service as well as the monument unveiled at the Warsaw Catholic School are not really original. In 2012, Skarga was mentioned most frequently on the Internet, in the forms of memes, which were often obscene and inappropriate.

The reconstruction of the past and memory is examined in the feature film Italia 90: The Movie (2014) by Miguel Gómez, which depicts the first participation of a Costa Rican team in a World Cup. The analysis includes the narrative, visual, and sound operations with which the past and memory are recreated (... or created), as well as the ways in which the story involves the viewers, particularly those who remember the episode. It is explained that, although the story resorts to certain topics of sports cinema, it is presented more as an adventure of the community, which would eventually include an entire country, and favors the exploration of the intimate over the epic. Italia 90: The Movie appeals to nostalgia, through recognizable images and sounds, as well as figures anchored in the hegemonic Costa Rican imaginary (such as the “common peasant”), to narrate an episode that, in addition to being central in the history of sports in Costa Rica, it is among the events that symbolically mark the country's entry into the globalized world.
