    The article adopts a contrastive perspective to the study of intertextual references found in Henry James’s novella Daisy Miller (1878) and its two Polish translations by Jadwiga Olędzka (1961) and Magdalena Moltzan-Małkowska (2013). The aim is to identify selected traces of intertextuality included in the source text and analyse how they have been dealt with by each translator in the process of establishing a new intertextual relationship, namely, that between the original and its translation. Assuming that texts do not exist in a vacuum, but are rather propelled by other (con)textual units, the question is whether and to what extent the intertextual tropes enriching the artistic significance of the novella are available and understandable to the reader of its Polish translations.

    The article aims to analyse four important point of view novels, namely Henry James’ The Ambassadors, Zasypie wszystko, zawieje [Everything Will Be Covered by the Snow] by Włodzimierz Odojewski, The Flanders Road by Claude Simon, and Morfina [Morphine] by Szczepan Twardoch. The notion of point of view serves as a starting point for considering the epistemological aspects of the novel and for tracing its evolution. James, both in his theory and novelistic practice, uses the point of view to make the character’s consciousness the main theme of his novels. Odojewski employs internal monologue to render the characters’ perspective, while Simon combines internal monologue with other voices. Finally, Twardoch’s novel can be interpreted as a parody of the point of view technique.

    This article confronts P.J. de Loutherbourg’s drawings of the selected scenes from Tom Jones with the possible “Gothic” content in Henry Fielding’s novel. Commenting on Fielding’s pictorialism, I argue that the most suitable scene from Tom Jones would have been the actual Gothic mansion of Mr. Allworthy, but the scene does not attract the illustrator’s attention. Then, I discuss de Loutherbourg’s patterns of Gothicizing the selected scenes in the manner of Salvator Rosa, which in the original depend on the mock-heroic or the grotesque. The article concludes with raising more general questions about the paradigms of de-contextualization and re-contextualization in late 18th century print market and book illustration.
    Artykuł poświęcony jest trzem „gotyckim” ilustracjom P.J. de Loutherbourga, przedstawiającym wybrane sceny z powieści Tom Jones Henry’ego Fieldinga. Artykuł podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, dlaczego ilustrator zrezygnował z ukazania gotyckich motywów obecnych w powieści Fieldinga, takich jak szczegółowy opis rezydencji Pana Allworthy’ego, i zamiast tego dokonał modyfikacji scen, które w wydaniu powieściowym nie mają z estetyką gotycką nic wspólnego. W konkluzji przypadek „gotyckiego Fieldinga” ukazany zostaje w kontekście istotnych zjawisk na rynku wydawniczym końca XVIII wieku.

    Opis:
    The return of life-writing genres, biographical writing in particular, to the heart of present-day literary practices remains one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary literature written in English. The article discusses a number of narratives (written by biographers, literary critics and novelists) which have emerged in the last decades and which attempt to present and critically analyse the life of Henry James, the master of American fiction at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author recapitulates on the major trends in contemporary biographical practices which address the life of Henry James – especially the conclusions reached by biographers and critics associated with Marxism, Deconstruction, Feminism and Queer Theory. Moreover, the article investigates the phenomenon of the nearly simultaneous arrival of several biographical novels about Henry James.

    The understanding of Jane Austen was for Joseph Conrad (probably) the condition of the understanding of the English soul as such. And, even if we roam around fascinating hypotheses, it is worth formulating them – mainly because they are a new key to the reading of the works of the author of Lord Jim. His problems with the literary heritage of Austen could be affected by different, numerous factors: 1) the growing popularity of Janeites; 2) the authority of, appreciating the author of Mansfield Park, Henry James; 3) the feeling of being lost of the Polish writer in the situation of the late novelist debut; 4) the literary tradition of the Ukrainian School in the Polish Romanticism, in which he was raised and he formed his personality. Conrad could make an attempt of dealing with, incomprehensible for himself, Austen in the 1910s, in the period of jubilees of the editions of her novels. In this spirit, it is worthy to read again such prose texts of Conrad, as: Zwycięstwo (1915) and Ocalenie (1920), but above all – the earliest from this group – Gra losu (1913).

    This study is based on the assumption that literary interpretations are explicitly or implicitly influenced by some philosophical system as a general system of thought. In this way, different literary interpretations often hide more general philosophical ideas. Nevertheless, this study tries to show that the interpretation of the given work of art need not be conceived only as application of the general philosophical approach; interpretation of the work of art, as argued in this essay, can in significant ways also show the philosophical approach itself. The subject of this study is the case of Henry James’s short story “The Figure in the Carpet.” This essay includes an analysis of how Tzvetan Todorov, Joseph Hillis Miller, Wolfgang Iser and of Pascale Casanova interpret the story and how they use its dominant image of a “figure in the carpet” for illustration of their own theoretical and philosophical approach.

    Henry James was not a sentimental writer. However, in his later books we can find traces of repressed emotions and melancholy. One of the most intriguing literary documents showing the nostalgic strain in James is his collection The American Scene (1907), a record of the novelist’s return to the USA after a twenty-years-old absence. It contains various manifestations of James’s nostalgia – for example, his memories of New York and his melancholic recollections of the places connected with his youth. Also, it shows James’s convoluted rhetoric of memory as a space of repression and displacement as well as his unwillingness to address these issues in a direct fashion.

    This article looks back to the book The Library of Henry James published in 1987 by James’s most renowned and possessive biographer Leon Edel and the biographer’s friend, the independent scholar Adeline Tintner. While Edel outlines the history of James’s book collection in his house in Great Britain, Tintner offers examples of James’s use of the trope of library in his fiction. In between the two essays, the two authors included a catalog of James’s collection in Rye, indicating the location of all the items as of 1987. This article relies on the information provided in Edel and Tintner’s book, to which little has been added since, and offers a theoretical and historical approach to the topic of library in the context of Henry James’s biography and literary heritage. The article gives theoretical ramifications to the findings of Edel and Tintner by distinguishing between the three meanings of “library:” a physical space, a cataloged collection, and a literary trope. It also juxtaposes Edel’s biographical-historical essay and Tintner’s literary analysis with the autobiography of Henry James, in which the library emerges as a place partaking of several traditions: patriarchy, the process of initiation and maturation along with social and national self-fashioning.

    The Princess Casamassima and The Bostonians, both published in 1886, are exceptional in James’ literary career. They exemplify his attempt to adjust to the expectations of his readers by venturing into contemporaneous sociopolitical debates. Writing these two novels was in itself an act of courage. No reviewer expected James to have any expertise in matters relating to the lives of early feminists or lower classes. He was, however, interested in these current issues and invested time and effort in researching them. The two novels form a transatlantic diptych, with The Bostonians addressing the topic of American feminism and The Princess Casamassima focusing on workers’ movements in Britain. Quite predictably, most American reviewers were critical of The Bostonians, which only shows that the novel touched a nerve, and praised The Princess Casamassima, which seemed to concern British society. Reviewers in Britain did the reverse, which exposes the quasi-patriotic impulse in literary reviewing of that time, or perhaps any time. The author argues that James’ work on his social novels transformed his self-perception as a writer. She also shows that the transformations James captured in Anglo-Saxon societies and their representatives on both sides of the Atlantic are at once caught up in history and symptomatically timeless, almost historiosophic.
    Powieści Księżna Casamassima oraz Bostończycy (obie opublikowane w 1886 r.) stanowią wyjątek w literackim dorobku Henry’ego Jamesa. Świadczą bowiem o podjętej przez pisarza próbie dostrojenia się do czytelniczych oczekiwań poprzez włączenie się w ówczesne debaty społeczno-polityczne. Proponując czytelnikom te dwie powieści, James wykazał się odwagą. Żaden współczesny mu recenzent nie spodziewał się po nim wiedzy w sprawach związanych z życiem protofeministek oraz niższych warstw społecznych. James interesował się jednak tymi aktualnymi kwestiami, inwestując czas i wysiłek w ich zbadanie. Obie powieści tworzą transatlantycki dyptyk, przy czym w powieści Bostończycy James porusza temat amerykańskiego feminizmu, a w Księżnej Casamassimie skupia się na ruchach robotniczych w Wielkiej Brytanii. Jak można było przewidzieć, większość amerykańskich recenzentów krytykowała powieść Bostończycy, co wskazuje na celność zawartej w niej krytyki społecznej, chwaląc zarazem Księżnę Casamassimę, która wydawała się dotyczyć brytyjskiego społeczeństwa. Recenzenci w Wielkiej Brytanii postąpili odwrotnie, co ujawnia quasi-patriotyczny impuls, jakim podszyte były recenzje literackie tamtych czasów, a być może recenzje jako takie. Autorka artykułu dowodzi, że praca Jamesa nad tymi powieściami społecznymi zmieniła sposób, w jaki postrzegał on siebie jako pisarza. Pokazuje również, że przemiany, które James uchwycił w anglosaskich społeczeństwach i ich przedstawicielach po obu stronach Atlantyku, są jednocześnie uwikłane w historię i symptomatycznie ponadczasowe, niemal historiozoficzne.
