    The aim of the article is to elucidate the reasons why the critical pedagogue Henry A. Giroux, in his recent works, was inspired by the thought (in many aspects completely different) of Hannah Arendt, particularly by her analyses concerning the role of public spaces and the power of judgement in the modern world. The article develops three contact points in which the two distinct paradigms meet. They are: the metaphor of the “dark times”, adopted by Giroux, public spaces and the university.

    Niniejszy artykuł analizuje związki między pedagogiką i teorią krytyczną w myśli Henry’ego A. Giroux. Ulokowanie genezy pedagogiki krytycznej w twórczości naukowej Giroux oraz zdanie sprawy z konsekwentnego użytku, jaki robi on z intelektualnego dziedzictwa Szkoły Frankfurckiej ma istotne implikacje dla sposobu, w jaki rozumiemy rolę teorii w badaniach edukacyjnych. Teoria krytyczna dostarcza narzędzi do rozwijania pedagogii oraz form edukacji, które na serio angażują idee emancypacji, transformacji społecznej i kulturowej walki o silną demokrację i racjonalną organizację życia społecznego. Artykuł zdecydowanie przeciwstawia się twierdzeniom, że pedagogika krytyczna utraciła swoje bliskie związki z teorią krytyczną, zaś krytyka edukacyjna nie zaoferowała żadnych pozytywnych wizji szkolnictwa, przynosząc w zamian cynizm i desperację. Na przekór tym opiniom, autor pokazuje, jak kluczowe pojęcia teorii krytycznej operują w dyskursie Giroux i jak pozwalają mu one skonstruować program edukacji krytycznej i obywatelskiej, który daje podstawy do pomyślenia o szkole jako demokratycznej sferze publicznej, gdzie myślenie krytyczne i kompetencje demokratyczne mogą być badane i praktykowane.
    Dieser Artikel untersucht die Beziehung zwischen Pädagogik und kritischer Theorie im Denken von Henry A. Giroux. Die Verortung der Entstehung der kritischen Pädagogik in Giroux' wissenschaftlichem Werk und die Darstellung der konsequenten Nutzung des intellektuellen Erbes der Frankfurter Schule durch ihn haben erhebliche Implikationen auf die Art und Weise, wie wir die Rolle der Theorie in der Bildungsforschung verstehen. Die kritische Theorie liefert die Instrumente zur Entwicklung von Pädagogik und Bildungsformen, die sich ernsthaft mit Ideen der Emanzipation, der sozialen Transformation und des kulturellen Kampfes für eine starke Demokratie und eine rationale Organisation des gesellschaftlichen Lebens beschäftigen. Der Artikel wendet sich nachdrücklich gegen die Behauptung, dass die kritische Pädagogik ihre enge Verbindung zur kritischen Theorie verloren hat und dass die Bildungskritik keine positiven Visionen für die Schule bietet, sondern stattdessen Zynismus und Verzweiflung hervorbringt. Gegen diese Ansichten zeigt der Autor, wie die Schlüsselkonzepte der kritischen Theorie in Giroux' Diskurs funktionieren und wie sie es ihm ermöglichen, ein Programm der kritischen und staatsbürgerlichen Bildung zu konstruieren, das eine Grundlage dafür bietet, die Schule als eine demokratische öffentliche Sphäre zu denken, in der kritisches Denken und demokratische Kompetenz erforscht und praktiziert werden können.
    This paper analyses connections between pedagogy and critical theory in the work of Henry A. Giroux. Locating the genesis of critical pedagogy in Giroux’s scholarship and accounting for its persistent exploitation of the intellectual legacy of the Frankfurt School have significant implications for how we understand the role of theory in education. Critical theory provides essential tools for developing pedagogies and forms of education that seriously engage with the ideas of emancipation, social transformation, and cultural struggle for a viable democracy and a rationally organized social life. The paper strongly opposes recent claims that critical pedagogy has lost its close connections to the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, and that educational critique has failed to offer any positive vision of schooling, leading instead to cynicism and despair. Contrary to these views, it demonstrates how the key concepts of critical theory operate in Giroux’s discourse and how they allow him to construct a program of critical literacy and civic education that provides a rationale for rethinking schools as democratic public spheres where critical thinking and democratic skills can be analyzed and practiced
