Opis:
Background: seafaring is an occupation with specific work-related risks, causing increased morbidity and mortality. Nevertheless, the research in the area of marine students ‘sleep quality and mental health is lacking in Lithuania, as well as other European countries. The aim was to overview scientific findings, related with occupational health risks in a seafaring population and asses the frequency of poor sleep and the relations among poor sleep, anxiety and depression in the sample of maritime students. Methods and contingent. The scientific literature review, based on PubMed sources analysis, related to occupational health risks in seafaring population, was performed. Questionnaire survey was conducted in 2014 at The Lithuanian Maritime Academy, 393 (78.9 % of them males) students participated. Sleep quality was evaluated by Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index. Anxiety and depression were assessed by Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Sociodemographic questions were used. The Chi-square test r Fisher exact test was used to estimate association between categorical variables. P- Values less than 0.05 were interpreted as statistically significant. Results. Scientific literature review indicate that highly stressful and exhausting working conditions on ships can lead to depression, insomnia, various types of cancer, cardiovascular, communicable, blood-born and sexually transmitted diseases. Poor sleep was found in 45.0 % of the students. Mild depression was established in 6.9 %, moderate in 2.3 %, Severe in 0.8 % of the students. Mild anxiety was found in 19.1 %, moderate in 14.8 % and Severe in 7.9 % of the students. Depression (score ?8) was significantly more frequent among third (fourth) year students (22.2 %) with poor sleep, as compared to the students demonstrating good sleep (2.7 %). Marine engineering programme students whose sleep was poor more often had depression (22.0 %), as compared to the students whose sleep was good (5.7 %). Conclusions. Seafarers have higher hospitalization and mortality rates than age-matched peers, due to exposure to unique occupational health risk factors. Maritime students had poor sleep more than anxiety or depression. Anxiety and depression were more common among the students demonstrating poor sleep rather than good sleep.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the paper is to present the burnout syndrome as one of the many threats and determinants of the organizational management policy. The study also assessed the occupational burnout syndrome in the context of maintaining occupational health and safety and the relationship between these categories, which is a feedback. Design/methodology/approach: This paper provides a theoretical analysis of the burnout syndrome in the context of organizational management. Burnout is analyzed through the prism of both its causes and the mechanism of its formation and the expected health, social and economic effects. The paper uses secondary data taken from public statistics, thematic reports and scientific research. To illustrate the phenomenon, the available domestic data was used, and for comparative purposes, foreign data were also referenced. Findings: Burnout syndrome, posing a great threat to the effectiveness and efficiency of undertaken actions, should be one of the main determinants of the policy of broadly understood management in organizations. Practical implications: Psychosocial risks and work-related stress are among the key challenges in terms of occupational health and safety. The conditions and the growing phenomenon of burnout imply the need to take into account remedial measures at the organizational management level. The factors determining the development of organizations and economies, ie innovation, competitiveness, etc., indicated so far in the literature on the subject, are based on the quality of human capital and lose their effectiveness in the face of occupational burnout. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this phenomenon by weakening ties, trust contributing to the progressive corrosion of social capital. And even the best management and business development strategy will not be effective based on burned-out employees. Social implications: It is to raise awareness of the growing threat of professional burnout phenomenon and to indicate the necessity of undertaking specific preventive tasks by the management. Originality/value: This paper evaluates the professional burnout syndrome in the context of maintaining occupational health and safety and the feedback relationship between these categories. The article is addressed to employees in order to raise awareness of the threat of professional burnout, but also to managers in order to improve the work environment to protect the organization from the effects, including the costs of burnout.

Opis:
Objectives: This study is aimed at evaluation of bacterial air contamination in intensive poultry breeding. The evaluation was based on the determined levels of bacterial concentrations and qualitative identification of isolated microorganisms. Materials and Methods: The study covered 5 poultry houses: two hatcheries and three hen houses with the litter bed system. The air was sampled in three measurement series in the central part of the investigated workplace at the height of about 1.5 m over the ground, using portable measuring sets consisting of a GilAir 5 (Sensidyne, USA) pump and a measuring head filled with a glass microfibre filter (Whatman, UK). For the quantitative and qualitative analysis of microorganisms were used appropriate microbiological media. Results: The total concentrations of airborne mesophilic bacteria inside the poultry breeding houses ranged from 4.74×10⁴ cfu/m³ to 1.89×10⁸ cfu/m³. For Gram-negative bacteria, the range comprised the values from 4.33×10² cfu/m³ to 4.29×10⁶ cfu/m³. The concentrations of the cocci of Enterococcus genus ranged from 1.53×10⁴ cfu/m³ to 1.09×10⁷ cfu/m³, whereas those of other Gram-positive bacteria from 3.78×10⁴ cfu/m³ to 6.65×10⁷ cfu/m³. The lowest concentrations of each group of the examined microorganisms were noted in the second measurement series when the air exchange in the breeding houses was over twice higher than in first and third measurement series because the mechanical ventilation was supported by natural ventilation (opened gates in the buildings). The lowest concentrations of total bacteria were obtained in those buildings where one-day old chickens were kept. Gram-positive bacteria of the genera: Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Corynebacterium, Brevibacterium, Micrococcus, Cellulomonas, Bacillus, Aerococcus, and Gram-negative bacteria of the genera: Pseudomonas, Moraxella, Escherichia, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Pasteurella, Pantoea were isolated. It was shown that for most of the investigated livestock premises the total bacteria concentrations exceeded the reference value of 1.0×10⁵ cfu/m³. Furthermore, pathogenic microorganisms which are a potential threat to human health (Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae ssp. ozaenae, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium) were found among the identified bacteria. Conclusions: The results indicate that the hygienic conditions of the working environment connected with litter bed system production of poultry are affected by changes of the efficiency of ventilation and create a direct health risk to employees. They should use personal protective measures to protect their respiratory tract, especially when the gates in the hen houses are closed.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the relation between the severity of cognitive impairment and the risk of falling among the elderly. The risk of falling was analyzed in 20 subjects (mean age 79,6 ±9,5). The study included persons with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score below 27 (average MMSE 17,7 ±6,0). To assess the risk of falling the Fallscreen in a shortened version was used (PPA). The correlation of MMSE results with PPA results was analyzed. The mean value of the fall risk indicator was 4,9 ±0,2. Analyzing the relation between separate PPA tests, there was a significant negative moderate correlation of MMSE scores with reaction time (−0,54) and a similar positive correlation with knee extension strength (0,61). A high correlation of MME results was recorded with the fall risk indicator (−0,71).The strong correlation of cognitive impairment with the physiological profile among elderly shows that the higher the cognitive deficit, the higher the likelihood of a fall inci-dent in this group. When creating fall prevention programs, it is worth paying attention to improv-ing the muscular strength of the lower limbs and general reaction time, because these two elements may particularly affect the increased fall risk of people with cognitive impairment.
Celem pracy było określenie związku pomiędzy nasileniem zaburzeń poznawczych a ryzykiem upadku wśród osób starszych.Badaniami objęto 20 osób (średnia wieku 79,6 ±9,5). Do badań włączono osoby z wynikiem skali Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) poniżej 27 (średni MMSE 17,7 ±6,0).

The global spread of the SARS COV-2 virus and the related Coronavirus Disease-19 (Covid-19) has forced the entire planet to suddenly adopt important safety standards and reorganize social reality. The present research investigates the perception of psychological, relational, and pedagogical risks and needs in the developmental age (3-18 years) by the parents of different Italian regions during the quarantine period. Specifically, we examined the opinions of parents regarding the rules of social distancing and the continuous and massive use of new technologies for distance learning (DL). The results showed that Italian parents have two main concerns: on the one hand, the emergency in terms of health and health-related aspects; on the other, the teaching, training, and educational trajectories of children. They manifested mistrust and scepticism towards institutions and the school world, in terms of both management competence and structural and infrastructural capacity; aspects perceived as concerns also for Phase 2 and 3 of the epidemic curve.

Opis:
The present work aims to draw attention to the fact that the language of legal texts (intended to describe all known reality) has not kept pace with the progress of science. Legislators use terms taken from the language of science, but do not always consistently assign uniform definitions to them. This can create difficulties in the application of laws involving scientific terminology. An example of such a definition gap is „microplastic” - it appears in acts enacted at the European Union level, but no definition has been formulated to cover the same designatums by a uniform name. This article first presents the legal texts that contain the concept of microplastics, which are recognised - along with pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors - as a new source of health risk present in food consumed by humans. Microplastic is the only one of the aforementioned triad that does not have a legal definition. Attempts at its definition from the scientific and official communities are discussed next. In Poland, the body that first drew attention to the dangers of microplastics and proposed its formal definition was the Supreme Chamber of Control. This article presents some of the conclusions of the Supreme Audit Office report on microplastics as a factor affecting human health. The review concludes with the author's attempt to formulate a relatively concise definition that is potentially suitable for implementation in the content of national law.

Opis:
Pobrano 76 prób pochodzących z osiedli mieszkaniowych, terenów z zabudową jednorodzinną, ogródków działkowych i pól uprawnych. Zawartość metali ciężkich (Cd, Pb i Zn) oznaczono metodą optycznej spektrometrii emisyjnej z indukcyjnie sprzężoną plazmą (ICPOES).Najwyższa średnia zawartość wszystkich badanych metali została wykazana w przypadku osiedli mieszkalnych zabudowanych blokami.
Upper Silesia is a region where intensive industrial activity was conducted in the past. As a consequence, the environment was significantly contaminated by many harmful pollutants, including heavy metals. Heavy metals decompose in the soil over a very long period of time, even up to several hundred years. The exposure to cadmium and lead is a serious public health risks factor. The aim of this study was to evaluate the content of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead and zinc in soils of Upper Silesia, with particular emphasis on the areas around buildings, where children's playgrounds and other recreational areas are located. The study was performed in order to answer the question whether the heavy metals in the soils of Upper Silesia are a problem from the past or a present hazard. The studied soils (76 samples) were collected from the housing estates of blocks of flats, properties with detached houses and gardens, allotment gardens, and agricultural fields. The content of heavy metals (Cd, Pb and Zn) was determined by optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP OES).The highest mean content of all the metals studied were detected in the soils front residential districts consisting of blocks of flats. Excesses in the maximum allowable content of metals in soil were shown in the samples from the gardens of detached houses and from garden allotments. In the soils from the agricultural fields, the concentration of heavy metals, with the exception of one sampling point, do not exceed the maximum allowable content. The heavy metal content in the soils studied from Upper Silesia is very diverse. Despite a significant reduction in the emission of the metals into the environment, currently some of the soils still contain very high concentrations of cadmium, lead and zinc. In areas heavily polluted by heavy metals, it necessary to take the preventive actions in order to reduce the exposure of society to the metals. Local governments, before deciding on the land use plan of a particular area, should analyze the content of heavy metals in the soils.

Due to the differences in reporting units and methodology on microplastics (MP) studies, there has been some difficulty in comparing results across studies. In this study, we presented index models that can be address this issue. Index models for pollution and health risks assessment was applied to MP data obtained from rivers in Nwangele L.G.A. Models such as microplastics contamination factor (MPCF), microplastics pollution load index (MPPLI), Microplastics polymer risk indices (Hi) and pollution risk index (MPR) for pollution and contamination assessment. Health risk models such estimated daily intake (EDI) and microplastic carcinogenic risks (MPCR) through oral and dermal pathway were also presented and applied. Results showed that there is no direct correlation of MP abundance with MPR. However, Hi correlated but with MPR. Increased MPs pollution risks and levels were extensively subject to the presence of harmful MPs polymers, just as the high MPs pollution loads index (MPPLI). The index models enabled easy comparison of MP pollution of the different rivers and provided concise information on the status of MPs in the rivers.

In a three year study (2018, 2019 and 2020), some groundwater sources in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria were evaluated for quality. A total of one hundred and eighty composite borehole water samples were collected from 10 locations/sites in the study area. The sampling sites in the study were A (Iju), B (Onipannu), C (Ilogbo), D (Arobieye), E (Igbooloye, F (Osi), G (Ijoko), H (Akeja), I (Oju-ore) and J (Iyesi). Samples collected were analyzed using standard procedure for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride and iron (Fe). Results over three years showed that the water was acidic with pH < 6.5, EC ranged from 39.52±0.79 to 134.99±0.03 µS/cm, TDS ranged from 19.43±0.42 to 81.00±0.02 mg/L, chloride was consistent at 0.02±0.00 mg/L while Fe ranged from 0.00±0.00 to 0.11±0.08 mg/L. There was no definite yearly trend except for Fe which dropped from 0.036 mg/L in 2018 to 0.011 mg/L in 2020. Modelling the data for consumption using water quality index (WQI) showed that the groundwater is of excellent quality with WQI < 50 while for health risks using the average daily dose (ADD) and hazard quotient showed that the groundwater would pose no non-carcinogenic risks. Periodic monitoring covering more parameter is recommended to reflect the proper status of groundwater sources in Ota.

The aim of our contribution is to briefly describe the health risks to people in the Czech Republic. It is necessary to realize that health concerns not only the human being but also the environment, it is the result of mutual relations between the organism, the psychic and the personality of the individual and the surrounding environment. Health is most damaging to smoking, poor nutrition, low physi- cal activity, excessive psychological stress, excessive alcohol consumption, drug abuse, risky sexual behavior. Demography is a doctrine of the population, it deals with dynamic and statistical indica- tors - population, migration, etc. The most important method is demographic statistics. Mortality or mortality is the ratio of the number of deaths to the given disease to the total number of inhabitants in the given administrative unit. For example, breakdowns into groups of men, women, children under 15 or occupations, injuries, etc. Prevention is a set of measures to prevent any undesirable phenomenon such as illness, drug addi- ction, crime, accidents, failure in school, social conflicts, violence, environmental disasters, and so on. Primary prevention is specific and non-specific. Specific is targeted against disease or against the risk of disease. Primary non-specific prevention means activities leading to the strengthening and development of health through health education or a health-conscious lifestyle. Secondary prevention attempts to capture the phenomena in a timely manner and prevent their deepening, spreading and the like. It focuses on particularly vulnerable groups, such as youth, minorities or the socially weak. Tertiary prevention seeks to prevent repetition, such as crimes, illness, drug addiction, and so on. It focuses on people who have just been cured, punished, and the like. Lifestyle is a style that includes forms of voluntary behavior in given life situations that are based on indi- vidual choices from different options. The health status of the company is assessed mainly on the basis of morbidity and mortality. The sickness, incidence and prevalence of illnesses in the population is the ratio of the number of ill persons to the number of persons at risk in the population and in the time period. It expresses the incidence and prevalence indicators.

Opis:
The aim of our contribution is to briefly describe the health risks to people in the Czech Republic. It is necessary to realize that health concerns not only the human being but also the environment, it is the result of mutual relations between the organism, the psychic and the personality of the individual and the surrounding environment. Health is most damaging to smoking, poor nutrition, low physi- cal activity, excessive psychological stress, excessive alcohol consumption, drug abuse, risky sexual behavior. Opis:
Objectives: The contribution deals with a risk assessment in practical applications of the high-energy liquid jet technology from the point of view of the risk identifi cation, estimation and evaluation. Materials and Methods: Differences between three different types of workplaces are highlighted and analysed - the indoor, the outdoor and the research ones. Theoretical analyses are supported by particular application of the method for the risk assessment in the Laboratory of Liquid Jets at the VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava. This laboratory is primarily oriented to research. Nevertheless, the conclusions can be used also for predominantly commercial workplaces. Results: Some new considerations and evaluations concerning health and safety are presented. Conclusions: Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) procedures were applied and their limitations in risk assessment of water jet-based technologies are explained.

Opis:
The text covers the issue of a balanced diet and healthy food from the perspective of a child in early education. Sweets, overweight, the lack of knowledge about a balanced diet, and many other factors affect abnormal development of children. Healthy food has become a kind of a trend. More and more people are trying to play sports, avoid unhealthy food and follow a balanced diet. Adults, i. e. parents, but also teachers and other representatives of educational institutions, are trying to ensure that children know the principles of healthy lifestyle, which includes the knowledge of healthy eating. Nowadays, school children in early education are taught about the dangers of eating unhealthy foods more frequently than they were in the past. Therefore, the purpose of the research was to get their opinion about what healthy food is and to what extent they follow a balanced diet when choosing food products. The researchers were looking for the answers to questions concerning the knowledge of 3rd grade students about a balanced diet and about possible threats that may result from eating unhealthy food. The analysis of the research results has revealed that students have adequate knowledge about a balanced diet, which they usually get from school or from the Internet. However, the children do not always follow this diet. Also, the research has confirmed the fact that students often use their knowledge of a balanced diet and they talk about healthy food with their family and friends.
