Each entrepreneur must adapt the workplace to the applicable legal requirements regarding health and safety a t work. Caring for a working environment is the responsibility of the employer. However, the employer should also take care of health and safety at work. Shaping positive behaviors and norms of employees' behavior influences the quality and efficiency of work. The employer should shape health and safety policy in such a way as to prevent accidents at work and potentially dangerous behavior. Therefore, he has at his disposal numerous methods that facilitate the management of occupational health and safety in the enterprise. The subject of the study is to describe and implement the "5 minutes for security" method in an enterprise as an element improving the culture of health and safety.

Professional work is often connected with dangers for human life and health. Employees are exposed for misadventures and professional illnesses. In some professions this risk can be very high. On the other hand work is very important in human life. It ensures integral human development. Hence, man can do his job although some risk can be connected with it. Prerequisite for this kind of activity is using all available means for health and safety. In such situa-tion possible misadventure is only the effect of coincidence, which cannot be predicted. Responsibility for health and safety at work is common duty of em-ployees, employers and state authorities. Employees are mainly responsible for their mental and physical condition, employers for worksite and authorities for reasonable labour legislation.

Accidents at work and occupational diseases have a negative impact not only on the psychophysical condition of employees and the image of the company, but also, above all, on productivity, and thus on social and economic development. Ensuring safe and hygienic working conditions is the responsibility of every employer but without additional forms of support it does not suffice to prevent and stop accidents at work. The employer should constantly implement measures to improve safety so as to prevent accidents at work. One of such activities may be to promote safe and healthy working conditions. It is a program that allows raising employees’ awareness and knowledge about occupational hazards and risks related to their work, as well as about methods of protection against effects of these hazards and risks. The purpose of the article is to present the concept of promotion and its tools in popularizing safe and hygienic working conditions. The article is also an attempt to answer, on the basis of the results of surveys conducted in the form of individual reviews, the question whether the promotion of safe and hygienic working conditions improves the safety of employees, reduces or eliminates accidents at work, and broadens employees’ knowledge.

Every enterprise tries to build the most effective company strategy. An important, though often overlooked element of strategy building is occupational health and safety management. Building an occupational health and safety management strategy in an enterprise is done in cooperation with the health and safety service, which determines the state of safety in the work environment and indicates the possibilities of its improvement. Cooperation with the employer and management allows for the development of appropriate mechanisms that aim to improve the safety of the work environment. The subject of the study is the construction of a health and safety management strategy in a selected company.

Doskonalenie kapitału ludzkiego w organizacji przyczynia się do kształtowania prawidłowych postaw pracowników i pracodawców wobec zagadnień bezpieczeństwa i higieny pracy. Jest to proces ciągły i wymagający czasu. Szkolenia są ważnym elementem budowania prawidłowej kultury przedsiębiorstwa, a tym samym kultury bezpieczeństwa pracy będącej jej częścią i muszą być dostosowane do potrzeb i specyfiki działalności danego przedsiębiorstwa. W artykule przedstawiono teoretyczne ujęcie problematyki szkoleń w organizacji, w tym między innymi proces projektowania szkoleń, a następnie odniesiono to zagadnienie do kwestii postrzegania przez badanych pracowników kultury bezpieczeństwa pracy. W opracowaniu wykorzystano część wyników badań dotyczących postrzegania kultury bezpieczeństwa pracy w przedsiębiorstwach branży przemysłowej związanych z tematem artykułu. Wyniki wskazują na ścisły związek działalności szkoleniowej na postrzeganie kultury bezpieczeństwa pracy. W dalszej kolejności Autorka ma na celu zaprezentowanie najważniejszych rekomendacji dla badanego przedsiębiorstwa w zakresie najsłabiej ocenionych punktów, co pomogłoby wzmocnić kulturę bezpieczeństwa pracy między innymi poprzez dobór właściwych szkoleń oraz odpowiednie zaangażowanie pracowników.
Development of human capital in an organization contributes to shaping proper attitudes of employees and employers towards occupational health and safety. This is a constant and time consuming process. Trainings are an important element of building proper culture of an enterprise and at the same time the culture of occupational health and safety being its part, and have to be adjusted to a company’s needs and specificity of its operation. The article presents theoretical aspects of trainings in an organization, for example the design phase of a training and next goes on to the problem of occupational health and safety culture perception by the surveyed employees. The studies are based on partial research results regarding the perception of occupational health and safety culture in enterprises of industrial sector connected thematically with the subject of this article. The results indicate a close relationship between trainings activities and perception of occupational health and safety culture. Next, the Author aims at presenting the most important recommendations for the studied enterprise as far as the worst-graded points are concerned, which in a further perspective could strengthen the occupational health and safety culture by means of, among other, a selection of proper trainings and adequate involvement of employees.

Mimo różnorodnych działań podejmowanych na rzecz poprawy standardów bezpieczeństwa i higieny pracy, inicjowanych w Unii Europejskiej, poziom bezpieczeństwa w polskich organizacjach nie ulega zasadniczej poprawie. Przeszkodą w osiągnięciu sukcesów wydaje się być tradycyjne podejście do BHP, które funkcjonuje w większości polskich przedsiębiorstw, oparte na filozofii humanitaryzmu. Doświadczenia krajów wysoko rozwiniętych pokazują, iż znacznie bardziej skuteczne jest podążanie drogą efektywności ekonomicznej w obszarze BHP (analiza kosztów korzyści). Celem artykułu jest diagnoza poziomu świadomości i podejmowanych działań przez pracodawców w obszarze zarządzania kosztami ponoszonymi na BHP. Badania zostały przeprowadzone w grupie 62 pracodawców, z wykorzystaniem kwestionariusza ankiety. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że przedsiębiorcy nie posiadają dostatecznej wiedzy w zakresie funkcjonujących stymulatorów ekonomicznych BHP. Tym samym nie dokonują analiz kosztowych, a inwestycje w bezpieczeństwo są raczej wynikiem obowiązków prawnych niż przekonania o opłacalności tych inwestycji.
Despite various measures taken to improve the standards of health and safety at work initiated in the European Union, the level of safety in Polish organizations has not significantly improved. An obstacle to achieve success seems to be the traditional approach to health and safety that is based in the majority of Polish enterprises on the philosophy of humanitarianism. The experiences of developed countries show that much more effective is to follow the road of economic efficiency in the area of occupational health and safety (cost-benefit analysis). The aim of the paper is to diagnose the level of awareness and actions taken by employers regarding costs management incurred for safety. The study was conducted in a group of 62 employers, using a questionnaire survey. The results indicate that entrepreneurs do not have sufficient knowledge about the functioning economic stimulants of safety. Thus, they do not make cost analyzes, and investments in safety are rather the result of legal obligations than beliefs in the profitability of these investments.

Improving OSH management in companies and increasing their effectiveness requires changes in the approach to OSH performance assessment.Traditionally used outcome indicators such as rates of occupational accidents and diseases do not provide information necessary for pro-active OSH management. To enable effective prevention, leading indicators should be used; they characterize working conditions and activities aimed at protecting employees' health and safety. This article presents leading and outcome OSH indicators as well as a proposal of an integrated OSH performance indicator. It also discusses basic advantages and disadvantages of using different indicators.

The main problems in occupational health and safety (OHS) system in Estonia (a postcommunist new European Union Member State) are analyzed and the implementation of a simple, flexible risk assessment method is presented. The study aimed to assess the working environment, the employers’ possibilities and willingness to carry out risk assessment, ways to manage risks and the steps being taken towards progressive improvement in OHS. The role of the Estonian Labour Inspectorate in the risk observatory is that of the main key authority in data collection and information dissemination in OHS.

The aim of the research was to establish whether the children between the ages of 7 and 10 years, attending Grades 1-4 of music oriented and general education classes, suffered from posture defects. The research material included 214 children aged 7-11 of the Primary School Complex No. 2 in Szczecin. There were 101 children examined in the music oriented classes, including 51 (50,5 %) girls and 50 (49,5 %) boys. In the school year 2006/2007, the research was conducted twice, including the same research material – first in September 2006, second in June 2007 accordingly. Body surface topography method, based on the technique of spatial photogrammetry, was used to evaluate body posture. The research included the analysis of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis angle in the sagittal plane. The results of independent research showed that proper posture in the sagittal plane was present in 62% girls and 71% boys from music oriented classes, as well as 73% and 75% in controls accordingly. Rounded back was characteristic for 31% girls and 25% boys from music oriented classes, as well as 14% and 16% in controls. Flat back was visible in 6% female musicians and 12% controls, with 4% boys and 13% controls accordingly. Based on the conducted research, the following results were formulated: 1. Physiological spinal curvatures of children in music oriented classes were more serious in comparison with peer controls. 2. Posture defects were more common in girls in music oriented classes, compared to controls. 3. The incidence of posture defects in boys in music oriented classes and controls was parallel. 4. The national curriculum program of study for PE in music oriented classes should be modified and complemented with exercises strengthening trunk muscles and increasing the range of motion in shoulder and pelvic girdles.

The main aim of that case study is the answer to the question ”Why is a training in a master of OSH (Occupational Safety and Heath) treated as a dull duty by the employees?” In the case study there was introduced the legislation concerning OSH trainings in Poland, main definitions dealing with the subject and elementary matter of the didactic process, which is communication with the group as well as a personal attitude of the author argued by a great experience of a trainer in the subject of OSH.

Wzrost bezpieczeństwa pracowników osiągany jest poprzez kształtowanie bezpiecznych postaw podczas szkoleń bhp. Znaczenie tych szkoleń jest nie do przecenienia. W rzeczywistości jednak szkolenia bhp w przedsiębiorstwach traktowane są często jako przykry obowiązek, co nie pozostaje bez wpływu na ich jakość i skuteczność. Niewłaściwy system szkoleń bhp przyczynia się do wysokiej liczby wypadków przy pracy i chorób zawodowych, a także nieodpowiednich warunków pracy i związanych z tym wysokich kosztów.
The increase of the safety of workers is achieved through the development of safe behavior during health and safety training. The importance of this training can not be overestimated. In reality, however, health and safety training are often regarded as a annoying duty, which has a significant impact on the quality and effectiveness of training. Improper safety training system contributes to the high number of accidents at work and occupational diseases, poor working conditions and causes high costs.

Doskonalenie zarządzania bezpieczeństwem i higieną pracy powinno prowadzić do zwiększenia jego skuteczności, wyrażającego się zarówno poprawą stanu bezpieczeństwa i higieny pracy, jak i ogólnego funkcjonowania przedsiębiorstwa. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badania wpływu działań realizowanych w procesie doskonalenia na wybrane mierniki funkcjonowania przedsiębiorstwa i wskazano te działania, których realizacja ma największy wpływ na zwiększenie skuteczności zarządzania.
Improvements in OSH management should result in an increase in its effectiveness. This paper presents the results of research on the influence of activities related to improving OSH management on selected performance indicators. It also identifies activities that have the highest influence on their effectiveness.
