Opis:
Avifauna are important for the ecosystem as they play various roles as scavengers, pollinators, seed dispersal agents and predators of insect pest and an important indicator to evaluate different habitats both qualitatively and quantitatively. A study was conducted during February 2012 to February 2015 in Chinsurah, the district town of Hooghly, West Bengal, India. This study was done in ix different habitats present in the core region of the town. These are agricultural land, river bank, small woody area, small water body, grassland and human habitat. A total of 67 avian species were recorded during this study. These species show preferences to various habitats, where some are specialist to one of the habitats and some are generalist to different habitats. Abundance of birds in different habitats is different, most probably due to the variation in amounts of resources in these habitats. Due to loss of natural habitats habitat specialists are gradually replaced by habitat generalists.

Opis:
Large tracts of natural habitat are being readily replaced by urban sprawl worldwide. We have limited knowledge about the anthropogenic activities on native species in these ecological regions. Human intervention has led to conversion of much of the global diversity by means of habitat alterations. Our conservation methods are also suffering from those superficial strategies. The present study was carried out to investigate the importance of habitat heterogeneity for the diversity, distribution and abundance of avifauna in and around Pench Tiger Reserve. In February 2014, a total of 79 bird species were recorded during the study period, applying the modified point count method. We compared species abundance and richness in Pench Tiger Reserve, considering four zones as metacommunity. Avifaunal community was distributed among Kolitmara (Western Pench, Maharashtra), Sillari (Maharashtra), Mansinghdeo (Maharashtra) and Seoni, Pench (Madhya Pradesh). Site specific biodiversity indices reflect the occurrence pattern of avifauna. Shannon – Wiener and Species diversity Index scored highest (9.56 and 1.78 respectively) in Mansinghdeo Wildlife Sanctuary. But species dominance was found high (0.62) in and around Sillari. Study areas with dense canopy closure were found to have more habitat specialist bird species, while areas having human settlements showed more opportunistic ones. An overall negative impact of human settlements on avian diversity, distribution and abundance was evidenced from the present study but more intensive study is needed to infer on the dynamics. Moreover, intensive studies may enrich us about avian diversity and distribution pattern of the study zone.

Opis:
Relic Pinus cembra forests were among the least studied plant communities in the Western Car- pathians. Their distribution in this mountain range is limited only to the Tatras. The lack of comprehensive research on the Polish and Slovakian sides of the Tatras led to considerable discrepancy regarding their distribution (300–1170 ha) as well as habitat conditions. Their occurrence on limestones and in the West- ern Tatras was contested. Therefore, the aim of this work was to determine the distribution and habitat conditions for the occurrence of Swiss stone pine forests in the Tatras. We mapped the entire range of the distribution of these forests, using the topographic method and digitized it in ArcGIS 10.2.2. Afterwards, we undertook spatial analysis, using DEM regarding their occurrence, depending on: altitude, inclination, solar radiation, exposure, geology and soil. To determine the preferable site conditions we used the logistic regression model. The total area of P. cembra forests in the Tatras is 916.93 ha. They occur in all mountain ranges within the Tatras. Altitude, inclination and solar radiation have significant impacts on the occur- rence of these forests. The odds of the occurrence of P. cembra forests increased by 0.5% for every 1 m of altitude, by 2% for every 1° of inclination and decrease by 0.1% for every 1 MJ/m2/year of solar radiation. The majority of these forests grow in the altitude range 1300–1650 m a.s.l. (95%) and on slopes with 20–60° inclinations (80%). Swiss stone pine forests occur both on slopes with low (1900 MJ/m2) and high annual solar radiation (3400 MJ/m2). They prefer slopes with North-western exposure. They may grow both on granite and limestone, while the majority of them were mapped on granite. Pinus cembra forests grow on diverse soils, both acidic and alkaline. Nevertheless, most of them occur on Haplic Podzols (52%). The results may be applicable to the Tatra National Park for the conservation and monitoring of this Natura 2000 habitat.

Studies on flowering of Hierochloë repens were performed over the years 2005-2007 in five habitats located in Bydgoszcz. The first habitat is a degenerated fresh ryegrass meadow (Arrhenatheretum elatioris). Another one is a degenerated form of initial xerothermic swards (Tunico-Poetum compressae). The third habitat in which the occurrence of Hierochloë repens was found and flowering was analyzed is sandy sward (Koelerio-Corynephoretea). Yet another habitat is ruderal in character and it was located on the side of the road (Convolvulo-Brometum inermis). The last one is a fertile and moist habitat of elm-ash marshy meadow being gramineous herb fringe communities in character. The evaluation was based on the following analyses: morphological characters of inflorescences (length of inflorescence, stem length, number of inflorescence branches and number of spikelets), stem and inflorescence weight and reproduction effort as well as the share of generative individuals in the population and the number of generative individuals per m². Differences were found in the structure of Hierochloë repens inflorescence in the habitats analyzed. The biggest inflorescence, in terms of all the characters analyzed, was found in fertile elm-ash marshy meadow, and the smallest in poor xerothermic sward. The highest generative reproduction potential of Hierochloë repens was found in the ruderal habitats. They are the basic potential source of generative diaspora production, which can affect the spreading of this species in Poland.
Badania dotyczące kwitnienia Hierochloë repens przeprowadzono w latach 2005-2007 w pięciu siedliskach zlokalizowanych na terenie Bydgoszczy. Pierwsze siedlisko to zdegenerowana świeża łąka rajgrasowa (Arrhenatheretum elatioris). Kolejne to postać degeneracyjna inicjalnej murawy kserotermicznej (Tunico- Poetum compressae). Trzecim siedliskiem, w którym stwierdzono występowanie Hierochloë repens i analizowano kwitnienie to murawa piaskowa (Koelerio-Corynephoretea).

Changes in river channel morphological parameters are influenced by anthropogenic factors, such as climatic changes, river catchment management changes, and hydrotechnical development of rivers. To assess the intensity of individual pressures and the resulting changes in abiotic and biotic factors in the riverbed, water quality monitoring is conducted, including the assessment of the hydromorphological status. The assessment can be based on the River Habitat Survey (RHS) which is a synthetic method that includes the evaluation of habitat character and river quality based on their morphological structure. The input data, which characterise any river include physical features of hydrotechnical structures, bed granulation, occurrence of bedforms, visible morphodynamic phenomena, and a sediment transport pattern. The RHS method allows to determine two quantitative indices used to evaluate the hydromorphological status: Habitat Modification Score (HMS), which determines the extent of transformation in the morphology of a watercourse, and Habitat Quality Assessment (HQA), which is based on the presence and diversity of natural elements in a watercourse and river valley. The proposed method can be divided into three stages. The first assesses the river section hydromorphological indices, describing the degree of technical modification (HMS) and the ecological quality of the reach (HQA), using the RHS method. The second stage describes morphological changes resulting from the technical regulation and estimates indices for the regulated reach. Finally, we compare HQA and HMS indices before and after the regulation. This comparison is described by numerical indicators and related to reference values.

Opis:
Whiteheada. Rezultatem badań jest zarys procesualnego modelu organizacji środowiska, oparty o autorski zestaw pojęć technicznych, m.in. pole, zdarzenie, potencjał zdarzeń, transformacja, kontrola, wzorzec relacyjny. Elementy modelu tworzą hierarchiczny system, łączący zróżnicowane zagadnienia architektoniczne i urbanistyczne. W konkluzji przedstawiono uwagi na temat roli architekta w procesie organizacji habitatu, wynikające z przyjętych założeń teoretycznych.
The subject of the paper is a preliminary sketch of the theory of organization of the built environment, as an answer to the dynamics of urbanisation processes in the twenty-first century. The basic assumptions of this theory are: 1) the temporality and variability of habitat elements, 2) the irreducibility of the environment to its part, 3) the linking of different organisation scales, 4) balancing individual and collective factors, continuity and novelty, as well as conditioning and creative freedom; 5) human participation as an integral part of system description. The work uses earlier structuralist concepts, especially theories by J. Habraken, and also the assumptions of process philosophy by A.N. Whitehead. The result of the study is an outline of a processual model of environmental organisation, based on a original set of technical concepts, including the field, the event, event potential, transformation, control and the relational pattern. The model offers a description of the habitat as a hierarchical system synthesising various elements of architectural and urban design. This results in a new perspective of the architect’s role in the organisation process of the habitat.

Habitat mapping has become an increasingly important application of remote sensing. Active and passive acoustic techniques have greatly improved in the last decade, and their use extends into other spheres to show their economic, legal, political and environmental benefits. This paper reviews the current status of acoustic techniques for habitat mapping. Traditional techniques include echosounders, multibeam systems and sidescan sonars. Passive techniques are also presented, along with geoacoustic inversion and acoustic daylight imaging. The developments in new techniques such as non-linear acoustics, synthetic aperture and interferometry are reviewed. Some emerging techniques are showing increasing potential for habitat mapping, and bistatic sonar, parametric SAS and 3-D chirp profiling are briefly reviewed. Leading international programmes are now making use of these techniques, most often in combination, and their results inform the recommendations for future uses and desired technological developments.

The studies were conducted in the summers of 2017 and 2018 on three watercourses in Central and North-Western Poland, the where maintenance works involving disposal of sediment and silt were performed in the autumn of 2017. Monitoring of the ichthyofauna in the Rurzyca River and the Tywa River before (year 2017) and after the maintenance works (year 2018) indicated a decrease in the number of species. Altogether, 23 fish species were caught in all the watercourses. Out of these, 12 species were not recorded after the studied rivers had been dredged. A slight decrease in the number of fish species was observed in each studied river after the maintenance works. The values of physicochemical parameters obtained for each watercourse indicate a low quality of the waters. After silt had been removed from the watercourses, lower N-NO3values were observed at most research sites, whereas the N-NH4+ values increased significantly (except for one site on the Kanał Habdziński). Additionally, high volumes of P-PO43-were observed (except for sites 2 and 3 on the Kanał Habdziński and site 2 on the Rurzyca River). Maintenance works performed on small watercourses have a negative impact on the quality of waters and a less significant impact on the number of fish and biodiversity. This appears to be connected with migration of fish in the river during the maintenance works and avoidance of the consequent unfavourable conditions to gradually return to their habitats afterwards.

Research on analog habitats enables the achievement of a fully functioning, independent environment in the future, which will certainly have a positive impact on both space exploration and the improvement of the quality of life on Earth in accordance with the goals of sustainable and responsible development. These are solutions such as a circular economy, the use of raw materials available on-site, the need to monitor all resources, combining architecture, nature, and technology in a coherent and harmonious manner, and many others. The article concerns the research and the developed concept of an analog space habitat made as part of the Master's thesis (author: Wiktoria Dziaduła, supervisor: prof. Bezpieczne i komfortowe miejsce do życia to podstawowa potrzeba każdego człowieka. Nazwa ta powstała z połączenia słów „community housing” czyli „wspólnota zamieszkania” i określa sytuację, w jakiej grupa ludzi inicjuje zbudowanie siedliska, w którym więź społeczna i intergarcja idą w parze z poszanowaniem odrębności i prywatności jednostki.
A safe and comfortable place to live is a basic need of every human. However, modern tendencies in housing construction appear not to answer this deeply rooted human need: the need to live in a sustainable environment and to create neighbourly ties. One of the forms of neighboirhood units is Cohousing. The name has been coined as a combination of the words „community” and „housing”, and describes a situation in which a group of people initiates the construction of a settlement in which social ties and integration go hand in hand with respecting the autonomy and privacy of an individual.

Opis:
The paper presents the classification of the hydromorfological condition of the Breń River according to the River Habitat Survey (RHS). The research of the hydromorphological assessment of the Breń River, which is a right-bank tributary of the Vistula River and almost entirely flows through the area of the Dąbrowa Tarnowska district was conducted in June 2015. The research sites were situated on the border of the Tarnów Plateau and the Vistula Lowland. The Breń River in these sections flows through rural areas used for agricultural purposes with low-density housing. The analysis of qualitative parameters describing the morphological characteristics were based on two synthetic indices of stream quality: Habitat Quality Assesment (HQA) and Habitat Modification Score (HMS).The calculated numerical values of the two indices proved that the sections of the Breń River correspond with the third and fifth class, which means a moderate (III) and very bad (V) hydromorphological condition.
W artykule przedstawiono klasyfikację stanu hydromorfologicznego rzeki Breń z wykorzystaniem metody River Habitat Survey (RHS). Badania oceny hydromorfologicznej rzeki, będącej prawobrzeżnym dopływem rzeki Wisły i niemal w całości przepływającej przez obszar powiatu dąbrowskiego (województwo małopolskie), przeprowadzono w czerwcu 2015 r. Uzyskane wyniki liczbowe dwóch wskaźników pozwalają zakwalifikować badane odcinki rzeki Breń do III i V klasy, co oznacza odpowiednio umiarkowany i zły stan hydromorfologiczny.

Opis:
Changes in habitat conditions in the area of Eastern Poland (Polesie Podlaskie), often associated with anthropopressure, cause a reduction in the number of locations and population size of valuable and rare bog plant species, including a Pleistocene boreal relict, Salix myrtilloides. The aim of this study was to determine the current conditions of occurrence of this species based on the physico-chemical parameters of peatland piezometric groundwater. The results confirm the declining trend in the number of locations and abundance of this species in the past few decades, but at the same time they confirm the wide range of amplitude of the many investigated factors. Among the groundwater parameters studied, the low level of nitrogen fractions, phosphorus fractions, cations, and DOC can be considered to be a set of conditions promoting the preservation of the Salix myrtilloides population. The higher concentrations of phosphates, sulfates, Na, Ca, and Mg as well as higher pH and electrolytic conductivity can be considered to be presumably unfavorable. The lack of significant differences in the values of the piezometric water factors investigated for the sites with different population sizes of the studied species requires the identification of other limiting factors and the implementation of programs for its active protection in Poland.

Opis:
Present status of a postglacial relict – Salix myrtilloides L. was investigated in north central Poland at 27 localities. Consequently 3 sites were confirmed, 4 were not confirmed, and the remaining 20 were considered to be extinct. In comparison to the historical distribution, ca. 74% of the sites existing 50 years ago do not exist today in the studied region. The confirmed populations were found near Oporówek (ca. 1600 stems), Rakowiec (ca. 100) and Bobrowo (15). At three sites confirmed in this study, the existence of vigorous hybrids between S. myrtilloides and S. aurita L. (S. ×onusta Besser) were observed. The most important threats to Salix myrtilloides L. populations in the studied region were assessed to be hybridization with other commonly occurring willow species, site isolation and habitat destruction. Natural habitat protection with adequate buffer zone and gene pool protection in a form of plantations was suggested as a conservation strategy. As an alternative strategy active protection ‘insitu’ was proposed based on cutting competitive common species of willows.

Opis:
Recent researches have determined that vegetation is one of the essential factors for game habitat quality. Vegetation is important in the form of the following components: as a food supplier, as a shelter provider, as the creator and regulator of the micro-climate of the habitat, etc. Past practice has shown that the classical methods for evaluating habitat factors involve a lot of subjectivity and often lead to an unrealistic estimate of hunting ground capacity that can affect sustainable game management. Instead of the classical analyses, paper proposes assessment of this factor using Geographic Information System (GIS). NDVI – normalized difference vegetation index is a graphical indicator that can be used to analyze images obtained by remote sensing and is used for these purposes. The researched area was hunting ground "Kapetanski rit" – Kanjiža, Serbia. In order to assess the vegetation factor, the analysis of satellite images is done for two periods of the year (May and December/January). In May the game prepares shelters for bringing an offspring and the period December/January is taken as part of the year when vegetation coverage is minimal due to winter and game is in need of additional food and shelter. Based on the results and maps, the user of the hunting ground can have a clearer view of the vegetation types and distribution, hence assistance in planning and analyzing the territorial distribution of the game. Comparing classical methods for evaluating vegetation and the use of GIS for this purpose shows the advantages of new improved GIS methodology.

Opis:
The marine environment is estimated to be one of the most significant sources of biological activity in the world. In the last few decades an increase in the research intensity conducted on marine microorganisms has been observed, which confirms the great potential of these organisms in the field of bioactive compounds' production. In order to efficiently use the natural resources of the marine environment, metagenomics can be applied. This powerful technique allows for efficient screening of microbial biodiversity for bioactive compounds. The primary aim of this review is to present some aspects of the construction of metagenomic libraries, and strategies of screening for novel bioactives in the marine surrounding. This paper also illustrates several examples of the application of metagenomic methods in the discovery of novel enzymes and drugs in various marine environments.

Opis:
India has an estimated 58.2 million hectares of wetlands that are important repositories of aquatic biodiversity. The variety of wetlands in India perfectly matches the diverse eco-climatic regimes of the country. This includes wetland systems ranging from high altitude cold desert wetlands to hot and humid wetlands in coastal zones with its characteristically diverse flora and fauna. Around 15 km away from the center of Kolkata city, West Bengal, lies a 12.77 ha (mean depth 1.5 m) freshwater lake, known as the Santragachi Jheel, in the district of Howrah of West Bengal, India (Lat. 22o 34' 60N Long. 88° 17' 60E; Altitude 8m msl) which has recently attracted the attention of avian migrant watchers India-wide. The Jheel plays an important role as the host of thousands (4000-5000) of migratory water birds as well as many resident species during the colder months of the year (October – March). More than twenty-five bird species colonize this lake during the winter months including the most abundant Lesser Whistling Duck and comparably infrequent Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveller, Gargany, Gadwall, Cotton Pigmy Goose, Common Teal and Baikal Teal. But this urban wetland most recently has been subjected to a wide variety of turbulences that includes incessant anthropogenic activities, improper development and management structures and lack of awareness about the vital role played by this ecosystem. So it was felt important to identify the status of Santragachi Jheel with reference to urbanization and various anthropogenic interventions to formulate suitable conservation, restoration and management strategies for this unique wetland with its magnificent avian repository.
