    The aim of the article is to respond to the question whether the subject of the story can exclude a homoerotic passion that he is possessed by. Jerzy Andrzejewski’s short story Niby gaj is used here to prove that a mechanism of self¬ exclusion is an illusion and it turns into its own reverse. The mechanism of exclusion helps the hero of the story to create a web made of attachments and dependencies. Michał (the adored object) embodies such a set of connections and acts as a lover who in this case turns against his antagonist.

    “Versi di un piacere particolare”: Italian Translations of C.P Cavafy’s homoerotic poems – In this article, I ask about the attitudes of Italian translators towards sexual difference expressed in Cavafy’s poems. Above all, I am interested in how translators convey Cavafy’s explicit homoeroticism in a heteronormative culture. Moreover, I examine whether the cultural changes of the second half of the 20th century modified the way Cavafy’s erotic poems were published and translated in Italy. I examine the choice of translated poems, analyze the way in which translators speak about the author’s sexual identity and compare various translations. The analysis shows that translators speak about homosexuality in a hazy and indirect way, suggesting it by periphrases, allusions and motifs that may be associated with the transgression of the sexual norm. It is particularly visible in the early editions which excluded the most explicit poems. Nevertheless, even recent translators tend to avoid using the term “homosexual”.

    Artykuł przedstawia „rodzinne podobieństwa” między wczesnymi filmami Władysława Pasikowskiego a kilkoma popularnymi filmami Johna Woo i Ringo Lama zrealizowanymi w Hongkongu. Zaskakująca wspólnota motywów obejmuje: wizerunek męskiej przyjaźni wraz z homoerotycznymi akcentami, status kobiet, zmienność tożsamości oraz melancholię na tle schyłku dotychczasowego świata społecznego. Wyjaśnieniem tego podobieństwa, zachodzącego najprawdopodobniej mimo braku bezpośredniej inspiracji, zdaje się czerpanie z podobnych wzorców estetycznych (przede wszystkim amerykańskich) oraz pewne analogie produkcyjne prowadzące do powstania równocześnie filmów charakteryzujących się wspólnymi elementami w odległych od siebie geograficznie i kulturowo kinematografiach. Odrębnym wątkiem są związki tych tytułów z kulturą VHS dwóch ostatnich dekad XX w. Dlatego też artykuł jest zakończony krytycznym fragmentem ukazującym Pasikowskiego jako „reżysera kasetowego”.
    The article presents “family similarities” between Władysław Pasikowski’s early films and several popular films by John Woo and Ringo Lama made in Hong Kong. The surprising similarity of motifs includes: the image of male friendship together with homoerotic accents, the status of women, the variability of identity and melancholy in the context of the decline of the familiar social order. In spite of lack of direct inspiration, the explanation of this similarity seems to lie in the use of similar aesthetic patterns (mainly American) and some production analogies leading to the simultaneous creation of films characterised by common elements in geographically and culturally distant film cultures. A separate theme is the association of these titles with the VHS culture of the last two decades of the 20th century. Therefore the article ends with a critical fragment on Pasikowski as a director whose work was made most popular through the medium of the VHS.

    The authoress analyses the notion of homoeroticism, as one of the themes found in the prose work of 20th century Polish authors: Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Jerzy Andrzejewski, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and Marek Hłasko. The article is an attempt to describe the relations that the characters in selected works enter into, shifting the former meaning of the notion of homoeroticism from the sphere of purely sexual fascination towards the psychological need of bond building between incisive male characters. Literature on the subject makes it evident that the homoerotic interests of the discussed authors were not limited to the world of fiction they created, but were clearly present in their biographies, which allows one to find a key to the analysis of their works as well.

    Kosińska reviews Sebastian Jagielski’s book Maskarady męskości. Pragnienie homospołeczne w polskim kinie fabularnym [Masquerades of Masculinity: Homosocial Desire in Polish Cinema] (2013), a monumental work concerning the ways and modes of coding homoerotic images and desires in Polish feature films from the interwar cinema to the most recent examples. Jagielski’s book is fresh, pioneering, provoking new ways of seeing the canonical Polish cinema. Author places his analysis in social, cultural and political context of Polish reality giving its readers a complete vision of the ways homosocial and homerotic desire functions in Polish culture as a whole.

    The article is devoted to the literary heritage of Oles Ulianenko, who was virtually the only national author addressing LGBTQIA+ subject matter. The corporal-mimetic method was applied to analyze fiction works, which enabled us to draw a number of meaningful conclusions. On the one hand, LGBTQIA+ themes are typologically represented by a variety of images which are characterized by both an ironic dimension and dramatic pathos, interpreted not in ethical but in aesthetic terms. On the other hand, Oles Ulianenko was the first to shift homosexuality into the visible realm, and to represent the “splendors and miseries” (H. de Balzac) of homoeroticism to Ukrainian society; who, with his sexualized, homosexualized and lesbian narrative of his literary works attempted to speak of a future when his country would overcome the lack of social and sexual freedom.

    The Magic Mountain (1924) relates an account of erotic passion. Both Hans Castorp’s emotional state and the object of his desire are characterised in a thermographic manner. The thermometer, which he buys (or, rather, acquires), is at once a Dingsymbol part of the discourse of desire and a real object common in tuberculosis sanatoria prior to the First World War. Castorp’s temperature of 37.6 degrees Celsius objectively quantifies his subjective sensibility. This specific constellation creates ironic dis-tance in the novel’s tale.

    The aim of this article is to retrace the male homoerotic and homosexual strands in Ibn Hazm’s "The Ring of the Dove" – with contextual analysis which refers to the juridical-religious debates and controversies about a phenomenon of love between men. At first, the author and a general profile of his work are presented. Then, a number of comments concerning difficulties with research on non-heteronormativity will be made with reference to the knowledge of scholars working with ancient Greek and Christian sources. Such perspective allows to evade a necessity of total agreement neither with essentialists nor with culturalists. The following part of the article discusses various attitudes of Islamic classical schools towards homoeroticism and homosexuality. Elucidation of original terms used in this context is followed with an analysis of fragments from "The Ring of the Dove". This analysis leads to a conclusion that ‘homoeroticism’ and ‘homosexuality’ as deliberately conventional notions have a potential to depict polarity within Arab culture of the classical period regarding love between men: by means of unwritten rules and thanks to the clearly outlined public sphere a great spectrum of possibilities between condemnation and acquiescence was institutionalized. In this way, the article demonstrates that all designations referring to eroticism are inadequate and casual.

    The text presents a double interpretation (homoerotic and homophobic) of a commercial image of the “renaissance youth” set in the context of the 1980s and the twilight of Communist Poland. The subversive potential of homoerotic reading of the image, on which somewhere in the late 1980s someone wrote AIDS, is presented against the background of its history. The hand-made inscription is here interpreted not only as a homophobic act but first and foremost as an operation aiming at establishing the sense of the image in such a way so that the subversion founded on homoerotic reading is cancelled and the “renaissance youth” becomes a “sick faggot.” As a result of this operation, the image starts to create the only legitimate view of homosexuality, with connotations of sickness, very similar to images of AIDS that appeared in the homophobic public discourse of the Reagan era in the USA.

Do jego najbliższych przyjaciół należeli głośni dandysi okresu Regencji – pisarz Edward Bulwer-Lytton i artysta amator hrabia Alfred d’Orsay. Disraeli miał kilka romansów z mężatkami, ale po ślubie z bogatą wdową stał się kochającym i wiernym małżonkiem. Mimo pokaźnego majątku żony, miał problemy finansowe, które w końcu udało mu się rozwiązać dzięki pieniądzom, które hojnie zapisała mu tajemnicza dama z Kornwalii. Spośród wszystkich kobiet, które poznał Disraeli, królowa Wiktoria zajmowała szczególne i wyjątkowe miejsce. Królowa ceniła jego lojalność i poświęcenie oraz uwielbiała jego pochlebstwa.
    In his youth, Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) did not shy away from women, although he was fascinated by male friendships, which – as suggest some biographers – could point to the homoerotic element of his personality. His closest friends included two prominent dandies of the Regency era – the writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton and the amateur artist Count Alfred d’Orsay. His non-English appearance, exceptional intelligence and dandy’s fame attracted the attention of many London ladies. Disraeli had several affairs with married women, but after his marriage with a widow of large fortune, he became a loving and faithful husband. Despite his wife’s considerable wealth, Disraeli continued to have serious financial problems, which he finally resolved thanks to the money bequeathed to him by the mysterious lady from Cornwall. Of all the women who Disraeli met, Queen Victoria occupied a special and unique place. She appreciated his loyalty and dedication and adored his flattery.

    This article analyses the transformative infl uence of Marcel Proust’s fi ction on early works of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz (1925–1927) in the light of the short story Nowa miłość [A New Love]. The article argues – on the basis of a reconstruction of the order in which Iwaszkiewicz read the volumes of In Search of Lost Time – that the date of its composition has be to revised and proceeds to explore the affi nity between the two writers. The analyses, which draw on Harold Bloom’s infl uence theory, compare and contrast their handling of scenes and narratives, relations of analogy and visions of love. The article claims that Iwaszkiewicz was keen to enter into dialogue with the French author and adopted some of Proust’s techniques, yet without compromising his own creative autonomy. In the course of that dialogue he developed a notion of Proust’s literary art which, it is argued, provides the key to the interpretation of homoeroticism and narcissism in Nowa miłość.
