In the literature on homelessness, the term ‘leaving homelessness’ is used. However, it is not specified. Intuitively, it is understood as overcoming the crisis of homelessness, leaving the shelter and living in a place where the client can act independently. Doubts are raised, regarding the period of time after which it can be considered that a person has left homelessness. The aim of the article is to show the opinions of practitioners, i.e. social workers, educators, psychologists, staff managing institutions for people without their own shelter on the interpretation of the term “leaving homelessness”. The paper presents the results of a survey carried out in 2018, among 155 practitioners representing 30 institutions (shelters, hostels, single mother houses). It shows that “leaving homelessness” is understood as leaving the shelter and the certainty that the client has been functioning independently in the social environment for at least 7–12 months. At the same time, he/she must have a job, support himself/herself, build a social network, maintaining abstinence. The survey also showed that, according to 38% of respondents, their clients are not interested in “returning home” and rather prefer to be in the shelter. This is related to their addictions, long homelessness and a sense of helplessness.

Analysis of the causes of homelessness and attempts to change their situation among homeless people with higher education are the purpose of the presented article. Losing home among people with higher education is not a common topic of research and analysis. In society, a homeless person is associated rather with an uneducated person. In order to analyze the reasons, the general situation and actions taken to overcome homelessness, five individual in-depth interviews with homeless men from the Mazovia region were carried out. All respondents completed university studies. Among the respondents, the main causes of homelessness are addictions and conflicts in marriage. The respondents admit that it is difficult for them to improve their situation, especially in terms of raising professional qualifications. They have education, so they mostly wonder what other actions they could take. Completed studies show that leaving homelessness, even with a university degree, is not easy. There is no effective system of help for homeless people in this group of people – they are offered jobs or courses and training definitely not corresponding to their possibilities and education.

The paper concerns a subjective image of the social reality of homeless mothers. The focus is put on the phenomenon of trust. A theoretical perspective adopted in the article refers to the theory proposed by Piotr Sztompka and Anthony Giddens. The analysis of the world of homeless mothers is based on the qualitative and quantitative research conducted among women living in centres for single mothers in the Lower Silesia region. The results of the research point to a low trust level of homeless women. It is shown that the trust is the main factor of the individual activity. It significantly helps in the creation of the social relations network. Additionally, it is shown how to activate homeless women by increasing their trust.

When helping another person we usually focus on what kind of help we offer and who we help. We often don’t pay attention to the person who offers help. The goal of this summary is to talk about that person – to show, who the volunteer is, in a specific context of street work with homeless people.[1] This article shows not only who streetworkers are, but it also shows their work ethics and their attitude towards the people they help. The research that has been done omits detailed stat analysis in order to focus full attention to parameters and indicators of this particular social study. Because of this process we manage to obtain a vivid and true image of a streetworker‘s agenda.[2]   [2] Lack of a more profound analysis is the result of having too small a sample for the research, and so analysis with the use of Student’s t-distribution test, chi-squared test, or testing the significance would not have much sense, and results of such analyses could not be extrapolated to a larger population. The study aimed at presenting a small but significant fragment of reality of supporting the homeless and it did not aspire to be a broad description of any population. The whole community should take part to support the people who have been isolated from the society. Proper progress can be made through government to care the needy community. According to one of the sayings that a single person cannot change someone’s destiny but, a group of people can.

The aim of this study was to determine the health status of homeless men from Tarnow district. The study included 70 men, residents of the Reception Center for Homeless Men in Tarnów. We conducted a diagnostic survey with originally designed questionnaire. Longer duration of homelessness is reflected by the enhancement of undesirable attitudes; this leads to changes in life situation, social status, and social position. Our study revealed that homelessness and its consequences have complex and multidirectional character. The most frequent causes of homelessness included alcoholism and divorces (20% each). Nearly one half of the respondents (47%) declared that their health status is neither good nor poor, and 31% of the homeless men characterized their health as poor or very poor. As many as 83% of the respondents believed that homelessness contributed to (partial or complete) deterioration of their health. Arterial hypertension, dermatological conditions, liver cirrhosis, and ophthalmological disorders turned out to be the most prevalent diseases in the study group. As many as 63% of the homeless men did not use any prescription medications systematically, and 37% declared taking them regularly.
Celem badań było poznanie sytuacji zdrowotnej bezdomnych mężczyzn z terenów powiatu tarnowskiego. Grupę badawczą stanowiło 70 mężczyzn przebywających w Domu dla Bezdomnych Mężczyzn w Tarnowie. Do realizacji wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego. Narzędziem badawczym był autorski kwestionariusz ankiety. Czas pozostawania w bezdomności wpływa na pogłębienie niepożądanych postaw, które powodują zmianę w sytuacji życiowej, statusie i pozycji społecznej. Przeprowadzone badania wskazały, że bezdomność i jej skutki mają charakter złożony, mogą oddziaływać wielokierunkowo. Do najczęstszych przyczyn bezdomności należały alkoholizm i rozwód (po 20%). Blisko połowa ankietowanych (47%) deklarowała, że ich stan zdrowia był ani dobry, ani zły. Aż 31% badanych określiło swój stan zdrowia jako zły i bardzo zły. Aż 83% ankietowanych uznało, że bezdomność wpłynęła na pogorszenie ich stanu zdrowia (częściowo lub całkowicie). Najczęściej występującymi schorzeniami były: nadciśnienie tętnicze, choroby skóry, marskość wątroby i choroby oczu. Aż 63% badanych nie przyjmowało systematycznie leków, a 37% stwierdziło, że bierze je regularnie.

The social exclusion is impossibilities determined in categories of participating in relevant aspects of the, economic, political social life and the cultural given society. The poverty is being related to persons, families or groups of people, of which resources (financial, cultural and social) they are limited in such a step, that the level of their life is lowering beyond the accepted minimum in the country of residence. A homelessness is both a cause and effect of other states of the poverty, lack of motivation, rejecting moral norms, lack of the ability, too pathological having socially recognised features. A poverty and a homelessness are one of social important issues of contemporary world which requires preventive concrete actions preventing of coming into existence of this phenomenon in order not to lead to the social exclusion.

Homeless, wanderer, tramp, hobo, … many terms by which common language attempts to designate housing exclusion. Naming this phenomenon without stigmatizing, without eliminating the complexity of the phenomenon, is a constant challenge when it comes to addressing those affected by the lack of housing. In this article, we show how three categories of actors are trying to meet this challenge. First, in the media. An analysis of the media discourse shows that the homelessness has now become a key media figure – especially when the winter approaches -, replacing the old iconic figure of the tramp. Nevertheless, naming this phenomenon proves to be a complex exercise for the journalists. Second, toward the organisations working with the people who are homeless. For them naming the lack of housing is also the challenge of those who, every day, try to accompany people in this situation. Behind the words are obviously hidden social representations but also ways of taking care of these people in their attempts to cope with the lack of housing. In scientific research, finally. Beyond the term used, a literature review shows that it is mainly the process by which these individuals go through that intrigues the researchers. It is not only a matter of naming but of understanding. This concern is shared by field operators who deploy their own categorization to better cope with this extreme form of exclusion of lack of housing. Our field research mainly concerns French-speaking Belgium (media and operational categorization). However, to contextualize our remarks, we are also making incursions into French scientific literature as well as into the conceptualization work carried out by researchers at the European Observatory on Homelessness.

Home as a space with its own material and non-material markers is defined, among other things, by social and culturally recognised standards for using and arranging space, which are usually reproduced, mediated and redefined in the everyday living practices of the homeless. Thus, although a flat is perceived as a rare good, a privilege, from which the homeless are excluded, by constituting an important element of human life, also in the situation of homelessness it is acquired through spatial location, the arrangement of adapted- originally not residential – space, or ways of practicing neighbourhood. The article discusses factors or circumstances which in the conditions of homelessness constitute “home – room”, “home – space of housing activity”, “home – space for relations and neighbouring”, and which have been determined by reference to the opinions and practices of the homeless.

This article looks at the issue of the dramatic raise of street homelessness among Polish men from the perspective of social anthropology looking at the relationship between structural constraints faced by Polish migrants and their own perception of the social world, their meaning-making practices, norms and values, behavioral patterns. As I will show, focusing just on structural and economic determinants not only offers simplistic and one-dimensional picture but it also fails to give an explanation and prediction what happens if these constraints and exclusionary policies are removed and homeless migrants gain same set of social rights as the rest of British and EU citizens (which in theory will happen in May 2011). An anthropological approach to the functions, roles and cultural meanings of homelessness, group bonds, masculinities, alcohol consumption, perception of the state and dominant society as voiced by homeless migrants I ‘hanged around’ with, reveals that structurally rejected, people with particular backgrounds reconstruct communities and form strong ties despite (or because of) a hostile, exclusionary and hegemonic social environment of the neoliberal order. Two conclusions are drawn from this analysis, empirical and theoretical: first taking both structural and cultural factors into account the levels of homeless among that group is going to rise, at least in London; second the set of cultural forms of behavior and social practices described in academic literature as the homo sovieticus syndrome (Wedel 1986, Sztompka 2000, Morawska 1998) proves not only valuable and resourceful in highly individualized, neoliberal and capitalistic society but may be in fact reinforced in new conditions being a productive – socially and culturally - counter-reaction to the neoliberal order of social life in the global city.

In this paper I uncover the identity response of the homeless to structural constraints that are facilitated through objectively produced and mass mediated culture. After an initial period of “liberation,” physical deprivation leads the homeless to seek institutionalized help. The “homeless” category constructed by the shelter industry absolves the system of blame and obfuscates the systemic roots of homelessness. In their picking and dropping of identities, and negotiations of meaning without any referential space to root themselves in, the homeless reveal to us the cultural tragedy of the present that affects us all due to rapid social change inherent in advanced capitalism.

The issue of homelessness is a phenomenon that´s very serious for a long time not only in Slovakia, but also in other countries of the world. Homelessness is considered as one of the most extreme consequences of poverty and social exclusion. The article emphasizes activities whose purpose is to help homeless people from physical, psychological, and social harm and enable them to return to society. The main aim of the article is to focus on methods of prevention by which it´s possible to eliminate the emergence of homelessness. The article attempts to show the image of the father in the perception of homeless women.

The subject of the homeless is rarely raised by the media. In the press and on television there is information about them mostly when it comes to their death or substantial bodily injury. Homelessness is a social problem of an extreme, and the consequences – pathological. Therefore, you should write about it and talk to ex-plain to the public the causes, consequences and the risks associated with it. Many ways lead to knowledge and understanding of the causes of this problem. This social phenomenon of a global nature requires effective programs out of homelessness. They should be designed to help the unit in awareness of their own powerlessness and lack of skills, understanding the need to ask for help, winning trust and confidence, experience a sense of security resulting from their own actions and restoring hope.

Homeless people are subjected to disadvantageous representations in the media, also lacking opportunities for self-representation. This article reports on the findings of two preparatory stages of a project that involves homeless people in the publication of their own newspaper. The findings show that homeless people want to represent themselves through self-created news and to address homelessness as a social issue through people’s life stories, which has the potential to challenge mainstream media practices related to portraying homelessness. At the same time, the analysis reveals several issues that need to be considered while implementing such projects. For example, self-empowerment may sometimes come at the price of disempowerment of others. This emphasizes the importance of carefully structuring the facilitating processes to promote homeless people’s genuine media participation, and to support individual and community empowerment.

There is no Strategic Plan for tackling and preventing homelessness in Slovakia, which exacerbates the unsystematic process of social services for homeless people. For this reason, we point out the positives and negatives of the whole system. The research focuses on mapping the current situation of homelessness and describes the aid system under the auspices of the non-profit sector. The participants in the research were social and street workers who provide care and counseling for the homeless on an outpatient basis, on a residential basis or directly in the street where they live.

In May 2019, a seminar entitled “Causes, decisions, interventions – a nationwide seminar on the causes, forms and tools of support in the crisis of homelessness of teenagers and young adults” took place, organized by the po DRUGIE Foundation. Specialists from social reintegration services met in Kazimierz Dolny to discuss the crisis of homelessness of teenagers and young adults, especially among people leaving institutions such as foster care or rehabilitation centers. Why do we still face the problem of teenagers living on the street? Does the system support them properly? These questions were answered by lecturers at the seminar. They were supported by participants in the meeting, who shared experiences of their daily work in institutions with teenagers whose lives after leaving an institution are often focused on survival on the street, with no support or opportunities to solve the crisis.
W maju 2019 r. odbyło się seminarium „Przyczyny, decyzje, interwencje – ogólnopolskie seminarium dotyczące przyczyn, form i narzędzi wsparcia w kryzysie bezdomności młodzieży i młodych dorosłych”, którego głównym organizatorem była Fundacja po DRUGIE. Specjaliści ze służb reintegracji społecznej spotkali się w Kazimierzu Dolnym, by omówić zjawisko kryzysu bezdomności młodzieży i młodych dorosłych, zwłaszcza wśród osób opuszczających instytucje opiekuńczo-wychowawcze oraz resocjalizacyjne. Dlaczego wciąż spotykamy się z tym, iż nastolatkowie żyją na ulicy? Czy system rzeczywiście wspiera ich w sposób prawidłowy? Na to pytanie starali się odpowiedzieć prelegenci seminarium, wspierając się doświadczeniami uczestników spotkania, którzy na co dzień pracują z młodzieżą, której losy po wyjściu z placówki często koncentrują się na przetrwaniu na ulicy – bez wsparcia oraz możliwości na rozwiązanie kryzysu.

The article is a reflection on the participatory research conducted by me among the homeless living in the streets of a large city outside the system of institutional aid (2005–2008) and in the environment of homeless people staying in the hostel created within the framework of one of the associations (from 2007 to 2013). The location of these studies within the interpretative orientation ensures an opportunity to get to know the perspective of the Respondents (in this particular case – the homeless). Work on self-presentation is based on the assumption of symbolic interactionism, according to which the basis of interaction is defining the situation, proceeding through interpretation, so reading the meaning of the partner's action and definition, informing the partner about the intentions of action. Therefore, work on self-presentation is an attempt to read the meaning of a partner's activity, based on a specific way of imagining a partner, and thus – the way of treating him and the mechanisms accompanying work on self-presentation.
