The article is a performative interpretation of Sendlerowa. W ukryciu, a biography of Irena Sendlerowa by Anna Bikont. The author of the article presents the biography as a textual performance, whose aim is to contest the well-known image of Irena Sendlerowa (described within the category of biomythography introduced by Michael Benton). The author analyses how Anna Bikont distances herself from the biomythography and reintroduces the parts of Sendlerowa’s biography that had been omitted for years through being incompatible with the role of a national hero. She also evaluates the extent to which biography can serve as a critical tool with respect to Polish historical policy.

Opis:
We want to see the history as a kind of "vitae magistra", so let's put the question of whether we are prepared for it? This is a fundamental issue that provokes the author of this article to pose a number of questions about the condition of our history as a field of knowledge and the object of research. The requested need to debate seems obvious, but the social reality suggests that history is more and more often a subject of the political game, a kind of race to conquer the next areas of history and to interpret them according to the criteria that have little to do with research methodology or the available sources. It is not without reason, these considerations came to include also the Polish navy which – detached from the socio – economic reality – gets bogged down in the myths of the Polish presence at sea. Only open discussion, free from political passions can lead to a better understanding of our national history, and cure us from the complexes which we tend to co-develop.

In the prelude I introduce threads related to European anti-Semitism. Presenting the functionalists’ standpoint, I elaborate on contemporary attempts to explain the phenomena of mass murder of the Jewish nation during World War II, while placing emphasis on the fact that the historical politics of the Holocaust in Israel and Poland is not yet a closed chapter. Following these conclusions, the goal and methodology of my research is devoted to media reaction to the amendment to the Act pertaining to the Institute of National Remembrance in chosen Polish weekly newspapers of record. In the end I present the results of the research conducted from 29th of January to 15th of April.

The purpose of the article is to analyse the process of change in Russian historical policy from a foreign policy perspective. The article hypothesizes that the historical policy can be considered as an indicator of changes in Russia’s foreign policy, allowing to infer the direction of its future development, playing both an ‘integrative’ and ‘disintegrative’ role. Using the example of the EU, the impact of Russia’s historical policy on the EU’s historical narrative is examined. While in the analysed context the new Russian historical narrative signalled a growing distrust and a more confrontational stance towards the EU (a disintegrative role), its unintended side effect was the construction of a common European historical narrative (an integrative role) pushed by the Central and Eastern European states in response to Russia’s aggressive rhetoric on historical issues, the interpretation of which few years earlier had divided the ‘old’ and ‘new’ member states.

The aim of the article is to analyse the value of myth and legend in shaping historical policy. The activity of politicians and their influence on shaping historical policy is most often associated with political change, secession, reconstruction, or state renewal. The creators of these transformations seek to find historical connections in the past that would legitimise the changes and the purposefulness of the actions taken by the government. Historians play a considerable role in such endeavours; however, they should not forget historical truth, which may conflict with political needs.

Polish-Russian relations are an extremely dynamic and changeable phenomenon, especially after Poland’s accession to NATO. Despite the fact that the Russian Federation was established only in 1991, the relations discussed in this article have also been influenced by the relations between Poland and the Soviet Union, whose successor was Russia. The aim of this study is to analyse changes in the Polish-Russian relations after 2010. Not only does the paper present the causes of conflicts that have influenced mutual relations, but it also indicates areas that need changing and that may contribute to the warming of relations between Warsaw and Moscow. The method of comparative analysis was applied in the study. The conducted analysis allows stating a significant impact of the Smolensk disaster on the Polish-Russian relations.

The existing „Code of Ethics for Employees” in Poland, as well as other documents prepared by representatives of all sciences gathered in research institutes of the appropriate reputation, do not in themselves distinguish between the specific characteristics of particular fields, especially between the humanities and nature sciences, The scientist in itself based on the general ethical standards in force in the European cultural circle. The purpose of this article is to attempt to exemplify the ethical dangers inherent in its scientific activity, and which derives from the specificity of the theory of historical cognition, whose verification differs fundamentally from the verification of conclusions formulated by rigorous sciences or social sciences based on statistical methods. This task was also undertaken with an indication of differences in the intensity of problematic ethical issues depending on the intent and object of historical research.

At the turn of the nineteenth century many European states began to publish multi-volume editions of sources illustrating the political history of these states in previous centuries (for example, the Prussian Politische Correspondenz Friedrich’s des Großen). The Russian Sbornik Imperatorskogo Russkogo Istoricheskogo Obshchestva published by the Imperial Russian Historical Society is still used by researchers. It seems worthwhile to focus on the Sbornik and to assess its value as a scholarly edition using the Prussian diplomatic correspondence, included in that edition as a test-case.

Polityka historyczna" weszła do instrumentarium polityczno-ideologicznego w Polsce, została przejęta przez media masowe i środowiska naukowe. Jej zwolennicy pozostają pod silnym wpływem historii nostalgicznej, która nawiązuje do narracji insurekcyjnej i romantycznej. Koegzystują ze sobą dwie na pozór sprzeczne tradycje - martyrologiczna i heroistyczna. Wykraczają one poza pamięć historyczną, dostarczając kryteriów słuszności w polityce, zwłaszcza zagranicznej. Interes narodowy jest definiowany w kategoriach egoistycznych, jako konieczność walki z historycznymi wrogami, którzy grożą polskiej niepodległości. W odniesieniu do stosunków polsko-rosyjskich w Polsce mamy do czynienia z kilkoma rodzajami pamięci historycznej - na poziomie władzy politycznej, na poziomie medialnym, akademickim i edukacyjnym, wspólnot religijnych i opinii potocznej. Zwłaszcza na poziomie politycznym i medialnym, ale chyba i edukacyjnym dokonuje się w polskiej przestrzeni publicznej stygmatyzacja pamięci historycznej wobec Rosjan. Proces ten oznacza naznaczanie, piętnowanie, przypisywanie negatywnych etykiet, odrzucanie czy niszczenie wizerunku. Działania te mają charakter intencjonalny i metodyczny, zorganizowany i celowy, oparty na pewnej polityce, dlatego można orzec, że są prowadzone z namysłem i premedytacją.(abstrakt oryginalny)
Politics of memory' has become a part of the array of political and ideological instruments applied in Poland, and has been accepted by mass media and by the academic circles. Its proponents remain strongly influenced by nostalgic history, connected with uprising and romantic narration. There are two coexisting but seemingly contradictory traditions - the tradition of national martyrdom and the heroic tradition. They go beyond historical remembrance, providing criteria of rightness in politics, and especially in foreign policy. National interest is defined in egoistic terms, as the necessity to fight against historical enemies, who threaten Polish independence. In the context of Polish-Russian relations, we are facing several types of historical remembrance - on the level of the political authorities, on the level of the media, academia and education, religious communities and public opinion. Especially on the political and media level - but possibly in education - we are witnessing ongoing public stigmatisation of historical remembrance towards Russians. This means branding, stigmatising, applying negative labels, rejection or defacing the image. The historian in the contemporary Poland has to fulfil not only the tasks on his workplace, commonly at a state university or in a research institute but he has also commitments which result from the traditional ethos of a man of science. In the public sphere he has to deal with historical politics created by the state and the political forces immediately, which cannot actually be influenced by the scientific circles in a relevant way. The political forces await from the historian the disclosure of such a “truth” which would interpret the existing reality as the possible space for creation of that what ought to be. The associational scientific movement as a traditionally autonomous body concerned with population of knowledge has in this situation the chance and the not utterly fulfilled task of defending of the historical truth, conditioned and determined with the contemporary theory of knowledge.
