Opis:
HIROMB is a 3-dimensional baroclinic model of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, designed for daily operational use. The model is mainly developed by Eckhard Kleine at the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg, Germany, and is based on a similar model, running in operational mode at that institution. The operational forecasts at SMHI starled already in 1995 with a daily 24-hour forecast and were later extended to 48 hours. The model is forced by SMHI's operational atmospheric model (HIRLAM), but also by river runoff from an operational hydrological model and wave radiation stress from a wind wave model. The present version of the model is set up on a nested grid, where a 12 nautical mile (nm) grid covers the whole area, while Skagerrak, Kattegat, the Belt Sea and the Baltic Sea are covered with a 1 nm grid. A parallelized version of the model has been developed and runs on a distributed memory parallel computer.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to compare the observed water level and the results of HIROMB model for the same period. Real sea level values, collected in the data base of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Gdynia were measured by Polish water gauges situated along tlze west part of coast and around the Gulf of Gdansk. The analysed data were from the period 15.08.1998 - 28.05.1999, and the forecast lead time was equal to 24 hours. The assumed reference level, equal to 500 cm, caused too high forecast levels and marked differences between observed and computed sea levels. In order to improve the results of modelling a new reference level has been established. Having introduced the new reference level, a better agreement between the observed and computed values was obtained in most cases. The validation of modelled results was carried out by means of the chosen statistical indicators.

Opis:
The High Resolution Operational Model for the Baltic (HIROMB) consists of a leveled threedimensional primitive equation model, including one equation boundary layer dynamics and a viscous- plastic ice model. At SMHI it is driven by the High Resolution Limited Area meteorological Model (HIRLAM). and it has been running continuously in a pre-operational mode since October 1995. The quality assessment concentrates on the last year of the simulation from April 1997 to April 1998.

HIROMB model
Opis:
Comparison between long-term measurements carried out during POLRODEX'97 experiment and results from HIROMB is presented. Analysis based on graphical presentation and statistical measure (reliability index) shows that model reproduces current direction fairly well, while current magnitude is underestimated. Time variability of salinity, temperature and water level variation reproduced by the model indicates discrepancies from observations.

POLRODEX
Opis:
The HIROMB model for the Baltic Sea hydrodynamic forecast, at present being run preoperationally in SMHI, covers completely the Polish exclusive economic zone of the sea. The measuring campaign POLRODEX '96 was organised and coordinated by the Maritime Institute especially for calibration and verification of numerical models in summer 1996 in the Gulf of Gdansk Five Polish and one Swedish institution were involved in the campaign. After the experiment, which resulted in many valuable materials, it was decided to continue such campaigns every year. In 1997, also in the Gulf of Gdansk, a new experiment POLRODEX '97 was organised, in which thirteen institutions from Poland, Russia and Sweden participated. A list of the data, collected during the POLRODEX '97, is provided.

Opis:
This paper presents results of the investigation carried out in frame of research project of Institute of Meteorology and Water Management Maritime Branch in Gdynia (IWM-MB) in the y ear 2000. The goal of the project was to determine the conformity of the sea current forecasts for the layer 8 - I 2 meters of the open sea part of the Southern Baltic Sea, as produced by the hydrodynamic model of the Baltic Sea- HIROMB [5}, with the measurements. Contrary to the results of previous experiments as in the case of the POLRODEX ones [7, 8, 9}, during present study it was expected to detect behaviour of the model far from the influence of the boundary like coastline as well as bottom friction in the shallow water areas. The analysed data were collected during five routine cruises of r/v Baltica organized by IWMMBsince February until September I999 [10], when cruise track started/rom the Gdansk Deep, next along the northern border of the Polish EEZ, ending in the Bomholm Deep area usually. On the basis of the current vectors recorded by means of the ship mounted ADCP as the 250 m average values in the layer 7.5 to 12.5 meters, mean values related to the model grid have been calculated and statistically assessed. These mean vectors have been used for compan·son of forecasted values. Consequently, the sets of values of the differences between measured and predicted currents were statistically evaluated both regarding the direction and the module of the currents as well as the current vector components (Vx, Vy) separately.
