ANGLO-NORMAN LITERATURE
NOVEL
KNIGHTS
HIGHER CULTURE
Opis:
In  the second half of the 12th century, the circle of Anglo-Norman culture saw the emergence of anew literary genre utilising Old French – the novel. The first examples of such works are translations of antique narratives which made up a trilogy: “The Tale of Thebes”, “The Tale of Troy” and “The Tale of Aeneas”. The appearance of these works and their popularity derives from the social need. On the one hand they contribute to prestige building of the young monarchy of the House of Plantagenet, who are apparently descended from Trojans.   On the other, the very use of the national language, as well as the specific construction of the plot (substantial broadening of the battle-related threads, introduction of amorous motifs, as well as the characteristic construction of the characters and the novel’s decorum) is indicative of the fact that this literature becomes a tool serving to introduce new, lay social elites to the circulation of the higher culture.

The article focuses on the changes in the field of higher education which have occurred during the period of systemic transformation in Poland; particularly on the influence of the regulations introduced in 2011. Following Cris Shore and Susan Wright the author argues that reforms are not only routine, bureaucratic practices but they have a profound impact on social life. In the light of this claim she suggests that the new law not only enforced structural adjustments in the academia but also triggered the process of reshaping the idea of university itself. This shift can be explained in terms of neoliberalisation (in the Foucauldian sense), as the process of transforming academia into the institution driven and dominated by the discourses of efficiency. In order to achieve that goal various tools developed for measuring academic and teaching performance, assessing research quality and institutional effectiveness were introduced. The author pays particular attention to practices of auditing, also defined as ‘rituals of verification’, which play a significant role in the process of producing accountable, selfdisciplined and calculative neoliberal subjects.

Opis:
The article focuses on the phenomenon of therapeutic culture that is considered as a set of patterns of thinking and acting concentrated on human’s inner life. Nowadays we perceive our emotions and feelings as a key elements of identity problems, therefore we’re searching help in coaches and therapists’ studies. In higher education the therapeutic ethos is manifested by an affirmative action and reduced requirements for students. The result of treating students’ emotional needs as a priority is the decline of teaching quality and reducing the distance necessary for transmission of knowledge and skills. The solution might be developing emotional competence seen as a way of character building.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a significant role in modern economies, and it is worthwhile to analyze the factors that affect their effectiveness. To our knowledge, few studies have focused on the attitudes of students in Poland to their work environment. The purpose of this paper is to present differences in the perception of current and desired organizational culture in public and non-public HEIs in Poland from the perspective of students. A synthetic review of the literature on organizational culture at HEIs was conducted and presented. Research in the form of a survey based on Cameron and Quinn’s model was conducted in two public and two non-public HEIs in Poland. A sample of opinions of 402 students was gathered and analyzed. According to students from public and non-public schools alike the present culture was clan culture. Both groups also pointed at clan culture as the desired one, with adhocracy culture following closely. The findings may be useful for higher education decision makers in their attempts to create an effective working environment at HEIs. A further, more comprehensive research into the subject will be worth conducting.

The purpose of this article is to present opportunities for research which show the common ground between tourism and physical culture using approaches and methods worked out and applied in economics. Attention has been concentrated on the category of ‘product’, treated here as a theoretical concept by means of which it is possible to present a structure of tourism trip. This will include the part that refers to those values and human activities related to physical culture. An attempt to identify the social perception of the attributes that describe a tourism trip was made by an empirical study using conjoint analysis on students in higher education in Kraków. The results show that those who participate in tourism enriched by physical activity, prefer trips saturated with attributes such as the required level of courage, the testing of psychological and physical abilities, rivalry with others or nature, an element of adventure, a high level of physical activity, access to sports and leisure facilities, and contact with nature. But at the same time they prefer a low level of risk to health or life. It was noted, however, that related to the latter female and male preferences vary.

The text attempts to answer the question whether musicians need a philosophy of music. The answer to the question of what music contributes to philosophy - a question superordinate in relation to the investigations of the links between philosophy and music - can be formulated clearly, since we find it in the texts of the most prominent representatives of European philosophical thought, including Schopenhauer, whose ideas are discussed in the paper. These issues are also discussed in literature which explores philosophical issues, by such classics of the genre as Thomas Mann and Herman Hesse, whose profound descriptions bring us closer to an understanding of that which music does directly, by expressing spheres beyond words that cannot be expressed otherwise than through music. Karl Popper regards polyphony as the greatest discovery of European culture, and provides evidence of the closeness of science and philosophy. These three levels of approaching the relationship between philosophy and music lead to demonstrating the axiological essence of music, revealed by performers, who make it possible for music to exist to the full in its sonority, unveiling its metaphysical perfection to its listeners.

W dziejach uniwersytetu wskazać można przełomowe wydarzenia i słowa, jak te prof. Kazimierza Twardowskiego o dostojeństwie i powinnościach uczelni.
In the history of the university, it is possible to indicate life events and words like those of Kazimierz Twardowski about dignity and job of the university. These words are also important in the context of modernity, as the university, the primitive sources of which we can find in Ancient Greece, was coming through various times until it became an iconic institution of the postmodern society. The university is a place of forming and multiplying the capital and archiving knowledge. The article is an attempt to recreate dynamics of academic life from the Greek academy to the 21st century university.

Opis:
Culture in an organisation, also in university, is under the impact of numerous factors resulting from both external and internal environment. The characteristic features of organisational culture include: an organisational scenario, philosophy on which the organisation's policy is based, the core of the values which determine the company's philosophy and mission, organisational climate, attitude towards work, the degree of personal responsibility for work, achieving progress in the organisation and customary and traditional ways of thinking and acting. Organisational culture of the university has an impact on the forms used for internal communication. Author made an attempt to identify the organisational culture of some of the university's employees and students. The purpose was to establish what type of culture prevails in that institution and also studied the used forms of communication between teachers and students.

The article points out the changes taking place in the organization’s environment, affecting both the attitudes and professional aspirations of employees as well as career models. These changes have caused interest in using professional culture in human resources management. It was assumed that universities are organizations that play a particular role in shaping this culture. Changes on the education market, associated with the expectations of young people, but also the activities of university managers. However, they caused that the values of professional culture based on knowledge and its development, perceiving professional roles in category of service, abide by the ethical rules (especially trust in relations with colleagues and clients) become unimportant. The most important goal for students is to gain professional experience during their studies, which is perceived as the most important asset on the labour market. Students also assess the practical skills obtained during studies poorly. As a conclusion the author states that there is a serious crisis in higher education related with shaping a professional culture.

Significant changes in the field of education observed in recent years under the influence of economic, political and social processes, as well as Ukraine’s entry into the global, in particular European, educational space, have become the basis for the implementation of educational reforms at all levels – from preschool to adult education. That is why there is an urgent need for professionals in various fields to have a high level of legal culture, because ignorance of the law does not absolve one from responsibility. In addition, the goal of all reform processes in our country is to achieve compliance with the European architecture in the relevant fields – legal, educational, medical, etc. Regulations are the main means of regulating and implementing legal policy in the field of education. Formation of legal culture of all participants in the educational process is a guarantee of the rule of law, a guarantee of fostering respect for the law and the state as a guarantor of law and order in the exercise of the right to education by every citizen. Accordingly, the legal competence of students, regardless of their field of study, is no longer just a requirement of modern society, but also a basic need of every person. The category of «legal culture» is one of the main characteristics of the country’s legal system, which helps to determine the quality of the legal life of society. The level of legal knowledge is an indicator that reveals the quality of the legal life of a higher education student, which allows the latter to evaluate both his or her own actions and/or inaction and the actions of other members of society and to distinguish legal relations in different branches of law. Structural components aimed at improving the level of legal culture of higher education students can be divided into informative components (regulatory framework of a higher education institution, charter, collective agreement, internal regulations, provisions and procedures governing the educational process, etc.), an evaluative component is the direct attitude of a higher education student to law in general (teaching general legal disciplines to understand the importance of legal knowledge and skills) and an organizational component is the activities of research and teaching staff. The issue of forming legal culture in higher education students should be prioritized during higher education, since knowledge of and compliance with the rules of law at the present stage of European development is unconditional.

Opis:
The text is an attempt to introduce and initiate a research project which focuses on experiencing the culture of daily living by international exchange students. The authors present major theoretical reflections on the issues of experience and culture of everyday life; they also characterize the community of student– participants of international exchange programs. (Re)cognition and understanding of experience is a methodological challenge, especially in regard to dialogue-oriented intercultural education. The authors decided to explore the issue, using arts-based research. In this model, the role of researchers-facilitators is to introduce the respondents into the research process by inviting them to participate in joint activities focusing on cognitive, artistic, social, and educational objectives. Such participation and cooperation are supposed to result in generating critical knowledge necessary to improve the respondents’ daily life. In the last part of the text, the authors conduct an initial analysis of the selected international exchange programs. The goal of the characteristics of ERASMUS, ISEP, AIESEC, CEEPUS programs is to outline the official objectives and priorities assigned to formal education. In this perspective, when planning their original research, the authors asked the following question: How are these priorities present, as complementary to non-formal education, in experiencing the culture of everyday life by exchange students?
