Opis:
The article analyzes the historical-political determinants of statehood crises in Guinea-Bissau. In the post-independence history of this country, there is a tendency to take political power by military coups, and the continual attempts to exert influence by high-ranking commanders of the armed forces on, an anyhow unstable, domestic political scene. Since the introduction of the multi-party system in 1994, none of Guinea-Bissauan presidents has succeeded in reaching the end of his mandate. This phenomenon is recognised as the fundamental and systemic cause of the statehood crises plaguing Guinea-Bissau. By presenting the turning points in its recent history and the international context, especially in the regional dimension, the author seeks to diagnose the causes of the continually unstable and fragile political situation in Guinea-Bissau.

Opis:
Helicobacter pylori is an etiological agent of chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastric cancers. The use of an appropriate animal model for experimental studies on the pathogenesis of H. pylori infections is necessary due to the chronic character of such infections and difficulties in identifying their early stage in humans. The aim of this study was to develop a guinea pig model of H. pylori infection and identify its microbiological, histological, serological and molecular determinants. Guinea pigs were inoculated per os with H. pylori strains: CCUG 17874 or ATCC 700312, both producing vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA) and cytotoxin associated gene A (CagA) protein, suspended in Brucella broth with fetal calf serum (FCS) and Skirrow supplement of antibiotics. To determine H. pylori colonization, 7 and 28 days after the challenge, a panel of diagnostic methods was used. It included culturing of microorganisms from the gastric tissue, histopathological analysis of gastric sections, stained by Mayer,s haematoxylin and eosin to assess inflammatory response, by Giemsa as well as Warthin-Starry silver staining to visualise Helicobacter-like organisms (HLO) and with anti-Ki-67 antigen to assess epithelial cell proliferation. H. pylori infection was also confirmed by polymerase chain reactions (PCR) for detection in gastric tissue of ureC and cagA genes and by serological assessment of H. pylori antigens in faeces. This study showed the usefulness of microbiological, histological, immunological and molecular methods for the detection of persistent H. pylori infections in guinea pigs, which could be an appropriate model for studying H. pylori pathogenesis and the related immune response against these microbes.

Opis:
Objectives: The aim of the study was the assessment of local tolerance to nickel implants during 9 months observation in guinea pigs sensitized to nickel before implantation and non-sensitized ones. Materials and Methods: Three groups of guinea pigs were included in the study: 10 sensitized to nickel by the guinea pig maximization test; 10 previously nonsensitized and 10 in control group. In 20 animals (except control group) the nickel implants were inserted in the muscle of the back. After 9 months of observation, the animals were patch-tested with 5% nickel sulfate. Also percentage of eosinophils in peripheral blood was examined. Next, the tissue surrounding the implant and skin from the area of patch tests were collected for the histological examination. Results: In 70% of previously sensitized animals, the patch test confirmed the sensitivity to nickel. In 60% of previously non-sensitized animals, a positive reaction to nickel occurred. The results of patch tests in control group were negative. Percentage of eosinophils in peripheral blood was fourfold higher in animals sensitized to nickel than in control group. In histological examination, in the tissue surrounding the implant a dissimilarity concerning the intensity of cellular infiltration was observed between animals previously allergic and non-allergic to nickel. In the 2 of 10 previously sensitized guinea pigs quite severe inflammatory reactions in the inside of connective tissue capsule were noted which may indicate a local allergic reaction. The histological images of skin collected from the positive patch test site corresponded with the typical allergic contact dermatitis. Conclusions: Nickel implants may cause primary sensitization to nickel. The nature of the histological changes in the tissues around the implants in guinea pigs sensitized to nickel may correspond to an allergic reaction. The examination of percentage of eosinophils in blood of guinea pigs may be useful in assessing the allergenic activity of metal alloys containing nickel.

Opis:
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria are human pathogens causing symptomatic gastritis, peptic ulcer or gastric cancer. Little is known about the kinetics of immune responses in H. pylori infected patients because the initial moment of infection has not been identified. Various animal models are used to investigate the immune processes related to H. pylori infection. In this study we checked whether H. pylori infection in guinea pigs, mimicking natural H. pylori infection in humans, resulted in the development of specific immune responses to H. pylori antigens by measuring the proliferation of lymphocytes localized in mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen and peripheral blood. The maturity of macrophages and cytokines, delivered by monocyte-macrophage lineage or lymphocytes, were considered as mediators, which might influence the lymphocyte blastogenic response. The obtained results showed the activation of T cells localized in mesenteric lymph nodes by H. pylori antigens in H. pylori infected guinea pigs four weeks postinfection. The blastogenic activity of lymphocytes was shaped by their interaction with antigen presenting cells, which were present in the cell cultures during the whole culture period. Moreover, the balance between cytokines derived from adherent leukocytes including interleukin 8 - IL-8 as well as interferon gamma - IFN-γ, and transforming growth factor beta - TGF-β delivered by lymphocytes, was probably important for the successful proliferation of lymphocytes. The H. pylori specific lymphocytes were not propagated in peripheral blood and spleen of H. pylori infected animals. The modulation of immunocompetent cells by H. pylori antigens or their different distribution cannot be excluded.

Although the phenomenon of otoacoustic emission has been known for nearly 30 years, it has not been fully explained yet. One kind of otoacoustic emission is distortion product of the otoacoustic emission (DPOAE). New aspects of this phenomenon are constantly discovered and attempts are made to interpret correctly the obtained results. This paper discusses a new method of measuring DPOAE signals based on double phase-sensitive detection, which makes possible a real-time measurement of the DPOAE signal amplitude and phase. The method was applied for measurements of DPOAE signals in guinea pigs. Sample records are presented and the obtained results are discussed.

Opis:
The article, based on the example of Donato Ndongo Bidyogo’s works, presents two aspects of Equatorial Guinean literature, namely memory and trauma. They are crucial for the understanding of this still young literature, written in Spanish. The consideration of selected issues developed by contemporary Equatoguinean writers gives the country’s literature a specific character. A reflection on the dramatic past and the difficult present is its recurring motif. The article is divided into four parts. The first part presents a theoretical reflection on the concept of Paul Ricouer’s “wounded memory” used in the text. The second analyses the so-called traumatic discourse in literature, and attempts to find the distinction between a traumatic event and a traumatising experience. The third part of the article presents the issues of Equatoguinean historical traumas and sketches the literary landscape of the country. The article focuses on literary strategies of collective projection, wounded memory of Equatorial Guineans and the issue of the (im)possibility o mapping trauma in literature. The last part of the text presents literary examples of the phenomena discussed in the literature of Donato Ndongo Bidyogo.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the drama of African immigrants described in the works of writers and poets from Equatorial Guinea. The text is divided into three parts. In the first, I attempt to determine the usefulness of literature to study the problems associated with the phenomenon of migration today. In the second part, I characterize two distinct groups of postcolonial Guinean migrants: political refugees and economic migrants; I also deliberate about the legitimacy of describing them as diaspora. In the last, analytical part of this article, I explain the reasons for describing the representatives of both groups as “catchers of unfulfilled dreams” by presenting their dramatic fates reflected in the literature.

One of the major pollutants generated from guinea fowl farms and slaughterhouses is guinea fowl feather (GFF) wastes. Chicken feathers are an important substrate for removing aqueous pollutants due to their structural characteristics, but the application of GFFs for such purposes has not been elucidated. This study was carried out to determine the potential of raw as well as chemically and physically pretreated GFFs in the bioremediation of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) from aqueous solutions and the subsequent biodegradation of Cu- and Zn-laden GFFs using free and immobilized heavy-metal-tolerant bacteria. Using atomic adsorption spectrometry, the ability of treated and untreated GFFs to adsorb Cu and Zn was determined, and the generated heavy-metal-laden GFFs were degraded using Pseudochrobactrum sp. IY-BUK1. The results revealed that under optimized conditions, acetone and autoclave pretreatment enhanced Cu and Zn removal by 40% within 6 h when compared with raw GFFs. Similarly, complete biodegradation of Cu- and Zn-laden GFFs was achieved at pH 8, with 2% inoculum size, and at 25EC using IY-BUK1 in 7 days. Upon optimization of physical and nutritional conditions, using one factor at a time and response surface methodology, the maximum keratinase activity was achieved at 30EC, with 3% inoculum size and 3.5% polluted GFF concentration in 3 h. The degradation and keratinase activity were further enhanced by 50% by the immobilization of Pseudochrobactrum sp. IY-BUK1 cells compared with free cells. Thus, GFFs can act as good biosorbents, and together with IY-BUK1, the use of GFFs can be an alternative approach to dispose of GFFs, thus preventing environmental pollution via bioremediation.

Soil based heavy metals resulting from anthropogenic activities in Kaduna Northern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria was assessed. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 15m with a soil auger using 50m × 50m plots laid in each of the four sites (ST1, ST2, ST3 and ST4) replicated three (3) times to make a total of twelve (12) plots. The assessment was done in two (2) seasons (wet season and dry season). Soil based heavy metals were carried out according to AOAC using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The data collected were analyzed with descriptive statistic as well as Anova using SPSS package. Eleven (11) soil based heavy metals; V, Cr, Mn, Zn, Co, Ni, Cu, Br, Pb, Cd and Fe were revealed in each of the selected sites. There were significant differences (P<0.05) when concentration are compared between seasons within the sites. Higher soil heavy based metals were recorded in the wet season than the dry season in all the sites. The sites behind Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) is significantly higher (P<0.05) in concentration than all other sites while the control (Kamaku National Park) has the least concentration (P<0.05). Pearson correlation showed a significant and positive association between soil based heavy metals and automobile / farming activities in wet season (R = 0.40**) and dry season (R = 0.95**) as well as in industrial / farming activities in wet season (R = 0.88**) and dry season (R = 0.94**) at 0.01 probability level. It is concluded that variation in the assessment of soil based heavy metals in the selected sites are influenced by anthropogenic activities (mainly agriculture and fossil fuel combustion) in the sites. It is recommended that there should be provision for licensing and registration of all major industrial polluters and monitoring their compliance with laid down standard; further research into anthropogenic air pollution and farming activities which leads to increase in soil based heavy metals especially in the Northern Guinea Savanna where there are limited research should be investigated.

Guinea‑Bissau’s media have negotiated their roles and freedoms within the postcolonial national construct since its official independence from Portugal in 1974. While the current media landscape is relatively pluralistic, journalists experience constraints from various sides: political pressures, unaccommodating regulations, lack of resources. The concept of media capture (Mungiu‑Pippidi & Ghinea, 2012; Mabweazara et al., 2020; Schiffrin, 2021) allows the analysis of complex, subtle and structural constraints limiting media’s ability to fulfil their roles. This paper traces the phenomenon on the macro level (context), meso level (organizations) and micro level (journalists) in Guinea‑Bissau to interrogate how the concept plays out in a context shaped by fragility. The article draws on a literature review, official documents and semi-structured interviews. Following Dugmore’s (2022) idea of precarity as an endogenous condition in many Sub‑Saharan contexts, this paper argues that capture is engrained in a fragile system rather than being an exception or disruption.

50m x 50m plots were laid in each of the two (2) sites, replicated three (3) times to make a total of six (6) plots in all. The plants in all the sites were grouped into four (4) growth forms (trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses) which are evaluated using line transect method. The data were analyzed using student ‘t’ test and biodiversity index was calculated using Shannon Weiner method. The result showed that the population density and biodiversity index of the plant composition in the control site are more than that of the flare site from all the growth forms assessed due to combustion of fossil fuel and the heat generated from the flaring site. The mean of the plant species at the flare site is 663.00 and the control site is 1495.00. The standard deviation for the flare site is 4.32 and that of the control site is 2.51. The paired sample ‘t’ test correlation coefficient showed that there is strongly positive correlation efficient of 0.86 between plant diversity at the flare site and those at the control site. However, from the above analysis, it is concluded that there is statistically significant difference between plant species in the flare site and the control site (p<0.05) due to gas flaring that kills and suppress the growth of plants in the flare site. It is recommended that gas should be harnessed for use as liquefied natural gas. Government and NGOs should embark on an aggressive afforestation programme. Government should also enforce law against flaring, major industrial polluters and monitor their compliance with laid down standard.
