RADAR plays a vital role in military applications since its origin in the 2nd world war. Recently it has been used in surface inception, health monitoring, infrastructure health monitoring, etc. In these applications, Ultra-wideband RADAR systems are more popular than traditional RADAR systems. Impulse RADAR is a special kind of ultra-wideband RADAR, which is mostly used for surface penetration, through-wall imaging, antimissile detection, anti-stealth technology, etc. because of its high resolution and low center frequency. Out of all these applications, impulse RADAR has been used intensively as a ground-penetrating RADAR for the detection of land mines, underlying pipelines, buried objects, etc. This report has attempted to provide the steps for designing the impulse ground penetrating RADAR (GPR) as well as provides the value of crucial parameters required in the design process of commercial GPR systems.

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technique finds immense applications in civil engineering today, as the most suitable approach for non-destructive testing of pavements, highways, concrete structures, and more. The major challenge in carrying out a GPR evaluation is that the properties of the probed medium are usually unknown. The permittivity and conductivity of the medium may vary from those of air to water. The electromagnetic waves also have a frequency dependent attenuation. The ability of GPR to detect signals reflected and scattered by the targets largely depends upon the antenna performance. This paper studies a novel 11:1 wideband loop bowtie antenna with very good radiation properties in the entire operating bandwidth. Synthetic and experimental results are presented for the return loss and gain of the antenna. Furthermore, experimental results are presented for the radiation patterns in the E- and H-plane. We also used the antenna to measure B-scans over two different pipes, a bamboo, and a reinforced concrete structure. All results obtained with the proposed antenna have been compared with results obtained by using a RC loaded antenna. It has been found that the loop bowtie antenna has excellent detection capability and produces less clutter. The loop loading technique can be applied to existing antennas for improved GPR imaging. This will improve the detectability of GPR by improving the target return signal.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems arenowadays standard inspection tools in several application areas, such as subsurface prospecting, civil engineering and cultural heritage monitoring. Usually, the raw output of GPR isprovided as a B-scan, which has to be further processed inorder to extract the needed information about the inspectedscene. In this framework, inversescattering-based approachesare gaining an ever-increasing interest, thanks to their capabilities of directly providing images of the physical and dielectricproperties of the investigated areas. In this paper, some advances in the development of such inversion techniques in theGPR field are revised and discussed.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was used to analyse the circular Vaidasoo bog in northern Estonia. This was done to better understand its structure and origin, and to test the suggestion that Vaidasoo represents a meteorite impact structure. The combination of GPR with LIDAR data suggests that Vaidasoo bog is developed in a NW–SE oriented glacial tunnel valley where post-glacial hydrology is affected by glaciofluvial deposits. As no clear impact-modified bedrock features were identified and the circular bog does not mirror the topography of the bedrock, we conclude that the Vaidasoo structure does not represent a meteorite impact structure.

Opis:
Recent studies highlighted deep-penetration prop-erties of inhomogeneous waves at the interface between a loss-less and a lossy medium. Such waves can be generated bymeans of radiating structures known as Leaky-Wave Anten-nas (LWAs). Here, a different approach is proposed basedon the use of a lossy prism capable to generate an inhomo-geneous wave when illuminated by a homogeneous wave. Thelossy prism is conceived and designed thinking of Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR). The results achieved by the lossyprism will be compared with those obtained by means of a pre-viously designed LWA that was created with the identical ob-jective. The approach of this paper is purely theoretical, andit aims at providing basic ideas and preliminary results usefulfor an innovative LWA design.

In this paper, the possibility of using a multiple-ring circular array as an antenna array for Ground-Pene-trating Radar systems is investigated. The theory behind theproposed idea is presented. The preliminary numerical re-sults that are obtained suggest that the proposed congura-tion is promising. It allows achieving a wide frequency bandand low dynamic range ratio of excitations, thus simplifyingthe feeding network. Further interesting requirements maybe satised by exploiting a combination of deterministic andstochastic synthesis techniques to design the array.

The article presents the results of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) measurements carried out in a historic tenement in Krakow. The aim of this study was to check if there is a basement under the apartment's floor. In order to verify the results, modelling attempt of electromagnetic field evolution in the medium was undertaken. The numerical simulation of GPR impulse passage in the medium uses the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD). Synthetic radargrams obtained as a result of the modelling were compared with measurements processed radargrams.

Within the road investments the very important element determining repeatedly the success of the whole project is an adequate information about the characteristics of the site, its load capacity, stability and the possible impact of geological characteristics that may interfere with subsequent service life, not only for the road surface itself, but also for the surrounded objects. The surface is incessantly influenced by geological characteristics, determining its durability and functional usefulness. The main aim of this paper is to answer the question how by the usage of modern technics for obtaining data it is possible to find a link confirming the characteristics of land on which the specific road projects are supposed to be carried out, or where these projects have already been accomplished, concerning their requirements with high accuracy of location and also the stability and durability of the ground. This article makes also an attempt to answer not only the question how to identify the construction of road surface, but also how to locate underground cavities, created or influenced by the flow of water, or due to geological structures characterized as an inconsistent ground. The results were supported with geophysical researches using GPR method, and also data collected with laser scanners.

The article presents some objectives and results of the European Defense Agency Program on: Improvised Explosive Devices Detection (IEDDET Program). The goal of the article is to describe the work, results and recommendations regarding Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) - contributions within the MUSICODE project. Its scope and goals were presented, which are in line with the objectives of the IEDDET Program taking into consideration that the recommendations (for UGV and GPR) are related to the goals, not the results of MUSICODE project. There were described scenarios and the resulting changes in the structure implemented in the UGV - the FLORIAN robot which served as a sensors carrier including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). The main focus of the article is to find the answer to the research question: what is an impact of using the GPR to be mounted on the UGV to detect improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on the UGV construction and the GPR results. The structure of this radar was described and examples of tests results were presented. The summary presents recommendations for the construction of an unmanned land platform to carry sensors used in the work carried out in the MUSICODE project and conclusions regarding GPR, resulting from the experiences gained under the IEDDET Program.

W 2013 r. po posadzkach wewnątrz archikatedry we Fromborku wykonane zostały sprawdzające, nieinwazyjne badania georadarowe (GPR). Badania wykonano antenami 800 MHz do głębokości 3 m. Główną uwagę zwrócono na miejsce określone jako „lektorium” (czytelnia). Potwierdzono występowanie silnych anomalii wykrytych tu w 2005 r. podczas pierwszych badań GPR wykonywanych antenami 250 MHz. W pracy omówiona jest metodyka i etapy badań. Pokazano trzy wybrane przekroje georadarowe (GPR) oraz mapkę wykrytych anomalii w części kościoła nazywanej „lektorium”.
In 2013, a non-destructive GPR investigation was carried out over the floors inside the Cathedral in Frombork. The investigation was performed to a depth of 3 m using an 800 MHz antenna. During the studies, the main focus was to find the place conventionally known as the “lectorium” (reading room). The investigation has confirmed the location of the strong anomalies that were identified during the first GPR study using the 250 MHz antenna in 2005. The paper discusses the methods and stages of the research. Three selected GPR cross-sections are shown as examples together with the map of anomalies in the area called the “lectorium”.

The article presents application of the new geophysical amplitude data comparison method (ADCM), resulting from integrated geophysical survey using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometry. The ADCM was applied to recognize the horizontal and vertical stratigraphy of a Roman senatorial villa located in Santa Marina (western part of Croatian Istria). The measurements were carried out in 2017−2019 at this site, accompanied by a use of GPR and gradientometer. These two methods significantly differ from each other, but on the other hand, they are complementary to some extent. This is due to the fact that the methods register different types of underground materials. The GPR records electromagnetic waves reflected from real buried remains or boundaries between geological or archaeological layers that differ significantly in electrical properties. The magnetic method, in turn, records the anomalies of the magnetic field intensity resulting from the underground concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, hence it is ideal for searching structures filled with organic matter or burning material. However, a separate usage of these methods does not guarantee a full picture of archaeological structures that are preserved underground. Only the application of the ADCM allowed for a comparison of GPR and magnetic amplitude data reading, following which a spatial image (2D and 3D) of the preserved archaeological structures and the geological stratigraphy of the Santa Maria site were obtained.

The paper discusses essential factors influencing the range of depth determination with GPR, including instrument features and chosen parameters of penetrated medium. Interrelations between instrument factors and measurement parameters pertained to: antenna frequency, size and depth of the object to be located, sampling frequency, time window selection and velocity of electromagnetic waves in the penetrated ground. Geometric principles of depth determination are presented and accuracy of processed radargrams is assessed

GPR method is perfectly suited for recognizing of sedimentary facies diversity in shallowly occurring sediments if there is a contrast of electrical properties between and/or within each layer. The article deals with the issue of the correlation between GPR surveys results and sedimentological analyses. As a result of this correlation a conceptual model of depositional systems of studied areas was developed. Studies were performed in two areas located in central Poland, where glacial deposits formed in the Middle Polish (Saalian) Glaciation are present. The study was based on 49 sediment samples and 21 GPR profiles. Analyses of lithofacies as well as granulometric and mineralogical composition of deposits of collected samples were carried out, showing the diversity of glacial deposits in both study sites. During GPR measurements shielded antenna with a frequency of 500 MHz was used which allowed high-resolution mapping of the internal structure of deposits and to identify four characteristic radar facies. Correlation of GPR profiles with point, one-dimensional sedimentological studies allowed the unambiguous interpretation of the GPR image and draw conclusions about the formation environment of individual units. Geophysical and sedimentological data obtained during study provide a new and detailed insight into selected glacial deposits in central Poland.

Sand dunes are the most prominent subjects of geological and geomorphological interest along the Curonian Spit - a mega-barrier that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. To date, an assessment of various parameters of migrating dunes along the spit has been based on comparative analysis of old maps or aerial and satellite images, as well as geodetic measurements. These investigations have allowed assessment of dune dynamics over a relatively short historical period (~1700s to present). The most recent detailed investigations of the Dead (Grey) Dunes along the Lithuanian part of the spit using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetic susceptibility (MS) surveys, supported by a radiocarbon (14C) chronological framework of palaeosols and infrared optically stimulated luminescence (IR-OSL) ages of sand horizons, have advanced our understanding of aeolian landscape evolution. The interpretation of dune activity and stability phases has been generally based on IR-OSL dating results of the sand layers located between radiocarbon-dated palaeosols. However, the influence of soil-forming processes on the IR-OSL dating results related to possible migration of natural radioactive isotopes via aeolian sand layers has not been previously considered. Hypotheses of dune reactivation and migration caused by abrupt regional climate shifts, catastrophic forest fires, anthropogenic influence, and more local forcings have been tested. An integrated approach to dune investigations has offered an estimate of the rates of sand accumulation and key phases of aeolian dynamics during both stormy and calm periods, as well as helped to extend the record of dune evolution to the mid-Holocene. The palaeoenvironmental and palaeodynamic reconstructions of the Dead Dunes suggest that this mid-Holocene phase of dune activity was of a local character and likely did not exceed several centuries.

This paper describes a new landmine detection algorithm starting from high resolution 3D ground penetrating radar (GPR) images. The algorithm consists of two procedures, object detection and object classification; both strongly depend on the properties of 3D GPR images. The algorithm has been tested on data measured with an ultrawideband (UWB) video impulse radar (VIR) system developed by the International Research Centre for Telecommunications and Radar (IRCTR). It was found that the algorithm is able to detect all landmines (including difficult to detect M14 mines) and classifies almost all landmines correctly with a large reduction in the number of false alarms caused by clutter. It turns out that for clutter removal it is most effective to eliminate detected objects with a small height.

In 2019, new research was initiated at two archaeological sites located on the Ropa River, in Gorlice County, in the southeastern part of Małopolska Province. The first site was the Castle Hill in Biecz, and the second one was the fortified stronghold in Kobylanka. The research consisted of three stages. Firstly, extensive archival and library queries were conducted in order to gather basic information about both sites. Secondly, surface research was performed in order to collect any movable monuments. During the third stage, a reconnaissance by means of GPR, electrical resistivity imaging and geo-magnetic survey was carried out. These provided plenty of new valuable information on the spatial layout of both sites. In the case of the Castle Hill, the analysis of the discovered anomalies allowed for the interpretation of some of the finds as remnants of the brick elements of the castle, e.g. the tower, which corresponds with the plan from 1877. The results of the analyses of the anomalies from the fortified stronghold in Kobylanka, with its ramparts made of stone and earth as well as inner circular housing, were far more ambiguous. Its chronology may date back to the early Middle Ages

The ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey conducted in the south-eastern part of the Polish archaeological concession in West Saqqara confirmed the high usability of the GPR method in non-invasive prospecting of desert archaeological sites. The survey has allowed to confirm the location of one and the discovery of two so far unknown funerary structures characterized by significantly large dimensions. Analysis of the reflection profiles allow to conclude that these anomalies are generated by rock-hewn burial shafts. Only one of these tombs can be dated with high confidence to the end of the Old Kingdom. Precise determination of the chronology of the two other structures is not possible without archaeological verification.

In this paper, complex signal analyses of ground penetrating radar (GPR) field data over an area of farmland in Krakow were interpreted alongside the basic filtered field data. The farmland was simulated with varying degrees of soil compaction induced by tractor movement. The focus of the study was the delineation of inherent characteristics of media through which the electromagnetic energy travelled. Fourteen GPR profiles were acquired from the area. The field data were subjected to pre- and post-processing prior to its the presentation and interpretation. Advance analysis operations on the field data which resorted in different attributes reveal more about the effects of the compaction on the soil than indicated by the basic filtered field data. Better resolution of subsurface layers boundary and lateral variation in the physical properties of the traversing media were well elucidated. The results have demonstrated that an advanced signal processing such as used in the study has ability to depict subtle characteristics of the propagating media.

The paper presents results of a geophysical survey conducted in Crikvenica, a town located at the north-eastern Adriatic Sea coast in Croatia. The main aim was to identify extent of a Roman pottery workshop discovered to the north of the present town, at the site known as “Igralište”. The performed magnetic and GPR surveys within the area of the modern playground in Crikvenica revealed a large number of anomalies that may be connected with anthropogenic activity during different periods, both in modern and ancient times. The first group consists of anomalies generated by remnants of the modern underground infrastructure. Magnetic and ground-penetrating radar maps revealed anomalies in the north-western part of the modern playground that can be very likely interpreted as remains of a large ceramic kiln dated back to the Roman Period, similar to the kiln discovered during the excavations located further to the north. Finally, the survey performed within the Crikvenica football stadium clearly indicates that the integration of different Ground Penetrating Radar and magnetic methods allows for a detailed and effective identification of buried archaeological structures in large areas.

The morphogenesis and inner structure of the Holocene foredune plain in the Narva-Joesuu area, eastern Gulf of Finland, were studied using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) study and interpretation of airborne LIDAR elevation data. The results show that the Narva-Joesuu foredune plain consists of ca. 100 parallel coastal foredune ridges built of well-sorted fine sand underlain by gently (~7°) seaward-dipping sandy beach deposits. The distal part of the plain, which consists of at least 15 ridges, formed during the regressive phase of the Ancylus Lake/Early Litorina Sea, serving as a barrier for the lagoon behind it. A larger portion of ridges, with an average progradation rate of 0.26 m a-1, formed under conditions of falling relative sea level during the Litorina regression and was separated from the older foredune succession by a hiatus related to the Litorina transgression at 8.5-7.3 cal. ka BP. In the highest central part of the plain the foredune growth was interrupted by foredune instability and a re-blowing episode dated to 5.4 ± 0.9 ka BP which may correlate with a larger regional cooling at 5.8-5.1 cal. ka BP in the North Atlantic and central Europe. During the last 3000 years, the foredune progradation rate decreased to 0.19 m a-1, most probably because of decelerated land-uplift and increased human impact due to coastal protection.

Ground water availability can be a major spatially variable factor of crop yields. In soils with the infiltration-restricting layer, ground water can be organized in the network of channels that conduct water laterally in wet periods and become water storage and water subsidy sources for plants in dry periods. The objective of this work was to quantify the relationships between the distances to the subsurface flow pathway network and corn yield for different weather conditions and nutrient management. Corn yield was monitored across the manured and chemically fertilized fields at the USDA-ARS OPE3 experimental site in Maryland. Data were collected during dry, normal, and above normal years in terms of the amount of precipitation from planting to physiological maturity. The subsurface flow pathway network was delineated using ArcGIS from data on topography of the infiltration-restricting layer found mostly at depths between one and three meters. The geographically weighted regression was used. Adjusted determination coefficients of regressions ranged from 0.485 to 0.655. Decrease of the adjusted determination coefficients from a dry to normal year and an increase from the normal to wet year was found. Factoring the subsurface flow pathway network influence into crop management can be an important component of precision farming strategies.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań wykonanych za pomocą georadaru, których celem było lokalizowanie zmian antropogenicznych występujących w podłożu. Badania polegały na wykonaniu badań terenowych za pomocą anten o częstotliwości 500 MHz i 900 MHz, a następnie na obróbce cyfrowej i interpretacji echogramów. W metodzie GPR niezbędnym czynnikiem zarejestrowania użytecznego sygnału (informacji) jest kontrast względem stałej dielektrycznej pomiędzy ośrodkiem, a poszukiwanym obiektem. Przeprowadzone badania i analizy wykazały, że odpowiednie dobranie anteny i ustawień aparatury badawczej jest jednym z najważniejszych zadań przy zastosowaniu georadaru, a co za tym idzie niezbędna jest wiedza i praktyka osoby dokonującej pomiarów i analizy.
The paper presents the results of research using georadar. The paper aim was to locate anthropogenic changes occurring in the substrate. The tests consisted of field tests carried out using 500 MHz and 900 MHz antennas, followed by digital processing and interpretation of echograms. In the GPR method, the necessary factor in registering a useful signal (information) is the contrast to the dielectric constant between the center and the object being sought. Conducted research and analysis showed that the appropriate selection of antenna and settings is one of the most important tasks when using a GPR. The knowledge and practice of the person making measurements and analysis are necessary.

Opis:
Ground Penetrating Radar is commonly used in civil engineering sectors. Underground anomalies (i.e., electric wires, water pipes or sinkholes) can be detected through representations of hyperbolae in the measured processed GPR image. Our work focuses on detecting the underground objects and understanding their metallic or nonmetallic characteristics. The max energy difference attribute is applied to illuminate their positions while phase analysis process can determine change of phase spectrum in the diffracted signals. For improving phase analysis, we applied a novel workflow combining conventional processed steps and a zooming step for preserving phase originality without disturbed by any unnecessary filters. We applied the workflow in model and real data for proving its effectiveness. Interpretation of two real datasets in Vietnam by our workflow can express existences of the artificial underground anomalies as well as their matter characteristics comparing to their surrounding environments.
Ground Penetrating Radar jest powszechnie stosowany w inżynierii lądowej i wodnej. Podziemne anomalie (np. przewody elektryczne, rury wodociągowe lub zapadliska) można wykryć za pomocą reprezentacji hiperbol w zmierzonym przetworzonym obrazie GPR. Nasza praca koncentruje się na wykrywaniu podziemnych obiektów i zrozumieniu ich metalicznych lub niemetalicznych wła-ściwości. Atrybut maksymalnej różnicy energii jest stosowany do oświetlania ich pozycji, podczas gdy proces analizy fazowej może określić zmianę widma fazowego w dyfrakcyjnych sygnałach. Aby usprawnić analizę fazową, zastosowaliśmy nowatorski przepływ pracy łączący konwencjonalne kroki przetwarzania i krok powiększania w celu zachowania oryginalności fazy bez zakłócania przez niepotrzebne filtry. Zastosowaliśmy przepływ pracy w modelu i rzeczywistych danych, aby udowodnić jego skuteczność. Interpretacja dwóch rzeczywistych zbiorów danych w Wietnamie za pomocą naszego przepływu pracy może wyrazić istnienie sztucznych anomalii podziemnych, a także ich charakterystykę materii w porównaniu z otaczającym je środowiskiem.

Metoda georadarowa pozwala poznać budowę warstw przypowierzchniowych, w szczególności określić profil litologiczny utworów, wyznaczyć granicę między skałą macierzystą a nadkładem. Dzięki tej metodzie można zlokalizować uskoki, pęknięcia czy szczeliny w górotworze, a także wyznaczyć zwierciadło wód gruntowych. W geofizyce otworowej za pomocą anten otworowych można wykonywać pomiary w głębokich otworach, ale również w niezbyt głębokich otworach wierconych poziomo na zboczach wzniesień z powierzchni ziemi. Potwierdzona została również przydatność metody georadarowej w zagadnieniach związanych z górnictwem odkrywkowym. Georadar może być efektywniejszym sposobem, w porównaniu do tradycyjnej metody otworowej, w zakresie m. in. identyfikacji miąższości płytkich pokładów, ich ciągłości, przewarstwień, czy innych naturalnych zjawisk występujących w pokładach. W artykule przedstawiono przykłady wykorzystania georadaru w geologii i górnictwie. Podjęto również próbę lokalizacji warstw geologicznych do głębokości 12,5 m. Do tego zadania użyto georadaru RIS-ONE włoskiej firmy IDS z anteną bistatyczną (osobno antena nadawcza i odbiorcza) o częstotliwości 80 MHz.
The ground-penetrating radar method (GPR) allows to investigate the structure of subsurface layers, in particular to determine the lithological profile of depos-its as well as to determine the boundary between the bedrock and the overburden. This technique allows to localize faults, cracks and gaps in a rock mass, as well as to outline groundwater table. Borehole geophysics uses borehole antennas to perform measurements not only in deep boreholes, but also in shallower, holes horizontally drilled on hill slopes. The usefulness of the GPR method was further confirmed in relation to the issues associated with open-pit mining. The ground-penetrating radar may prove more effective in e.g. estimating the thickness of shallow deposits, their conti-nuity, interbedding or other natural phenomena that occur in deposits, as compared to the traditional holedrilling method. This paper presents examples of the use of the ground-penetrating radar in geology and mining. An attempt was also made to localize geologi-cal layers at a depth of up to 12.5 m. For this purpose, RIS-ONE ground-penetrating radar (IDS, Italy) featuring 80 MHz bistatic antenna (separate transmitting and receiving antennas) was used.

One of the significant fields of civil engineering is road construction. The GPR method is mentioned as one of the many research methods which enables to diagnose the road pavement structure. The article presents the results of tests, which were performed using RAMAC/GPR, CU II and ProEx control units, on the newly built section of a road with highway parameters. Their goal was a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the relationship between the detection, determining of thicknesses of the layers of road pavement structure by the above-mentioned method, and the selected parameters of GPR soundings, using a variety of GPR units and antennas with varied frequencies. The results presented in this article are the case studies, which may occur during diagnostic research works. The summarized results of the study are important to find a compromise between the appropriate selection of measurement parameters in terms of acquiring the best quality of the GPR data and the economic performance of this task involving surveying and research work.

The experimental measurements were carried out on in the alp of Ornak in the western part of Tatra Mountains This article provides a brief theoretical analysis of possible use of the georadar method in post-glacial sediment examination. The results of GPR surveys done in the reflection profiling mode enable the distinction of zones with different amount of till, clay, sand, gravel and rock debris in the post-glacial sediments.
Badania GPR prezentowane w artykule miały dwa cele: pierwszym było określenie możliwości zastosowania metody GPR do badania utworów osadowych w górskich warunkach geologicznych, a drugim - określenie przestrzennego rozkładu i miąższości utworów postglacjalnych w wybranym miejscu w górach. Badania eksperymentalne przeprowadzono na hali Ornak we wschodniej części Tatr. W artykule zamieszczono krótką dyskusję teoretyczną na temat możliwości zastosowania metody georadarowej do badania osadów postglacjalnych. Zaprezentowane w artykule wyniki badań GPR wykonanych w technice refleksyjnej pozwoliły na wyróżnienie w osadach postglacjalnych stref z różnym nagromadzeniem glin, piasków, żwirów oraz odłamków skalnych.

In areas experiencing low deformation rates, landscapes provide limited evidence of ongoing tectonic activity, being either masked or altered by exogenic processes. Accordingly, the identification of fault activity and near surface deformation is commonly accomplished by multidisciplinary research combining geological, geophysical and geomorphic methods. In this study, Quaternary fault activity in the SW Pannonian Basin is investigated in the region of Bilogora, NE Croatia. The study area is positioned along the SW margin of the Drava Depression that was uplifted during the Pliocene and Quaternary within the Drava Depression Boundary Fault Zone. In this fault zone six GPR profiles were recorded. Reflection patterns, radar facies and truncations determined fault activity and near-surface deformation at four locations with vertical displacements of ≤1 m. At two sites, profiles did not show truncation of the shallowest reflections, however, an elevation difference of ca. 10 m between two palaeostream channels along one of the profiles suggests Quaternary uplift accommodated by a mapped fault. Considering the importance of the seismogenic potential of active faults and their correlation with the seismicity of Bilogora, this research will be followed by additional studies of near-surface strata deformation and palaeoseismological fault properties.

The aim of this study was to identify the tile drainage systems within the year (from spring to autumn) using the ground penetrating radar (GPR) geophysical method. The measurements were performed in the experimental locality Dehtáře in the Bohemo-Moravian Highland (Czech Republic) in the years 2016 and 2017. The profiles located in the drained area were repeatedly measured together with the drainage discharges, soil moisture and groundwater level. The best visibility of tile drains was observed during snowmelt (in March and April) when the drainage discharges usually reach their maximum. In other months, the visibility of the drains was variable, but mostly worse. For a reliable detection of individual drains, the measurements above the drainage must be performed in several profiles. Under the conditions of the Czech Republic, the best results were obtained by a 500 MHz frequency antenna.

In the article the occurrence ofseveral natural thresholds in Vistula River valley was discussed. These forms are stabilizing river channel regime and impeding shipping at the same time. The example of application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) for detecting and identifying the erosion zones in the bottom of the river valley was presented. The investigations were carried out along the chosen section of Vistula River in the vicinity of Gdansk Bridge (Most Gdański) in Warsaw. The survey was conductedfrom a motorboat with the MALA GroundExplorer (GX) georadar system installed with 160 MHz screen antenna. The prospection down to 7.5 m below the water surface was obtained. The applied methodology allowed to obtain radar echograms indicating the following anomalies: from the river bottom, from cohesive soil (includingNeogene clays) andfrom thresholds (noticeably elevatedforms in the bottom). In identifying and interpreting georadar anomalies, archival boreholes data were used.

The main scientific goal of this work is the presentation of the role of selected geophysical methods (Ground-Penetrating Radar GPR and Electrical Resistivity Tomography ERT) to identify water escape zones from retention reservoirs. The paper proposes a methodology of geophysical investigations for the identification of water escape zones from a retention fresh water lake (low mineralised water). The study was performed in a lake reservoir in Upper Silesia. Since a number of years the administrators of the lake have observed a decreasing water level, a phenomenon that is not related to the exploitation of the object. The analysed retention lake has a maximal depth between 6 and 10 m, depending on the season. It is located on Triassic carbonate rocks of the Muschelkalk facies. Geophysical surveys included measurements on the water surface using ground penetration radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) methods. The measurements were performed from watercrafts made of non-metal materials. The prospection reached a depth of about 1 to 5 m below the reservoir bottom. Due to large difficulties of conducting investigations in the lake, a fragment with an area of about 5,300 m2, where service activities and sealing works were already commenced, was selected for the geophysical survey. The scope of this work was: (1) field geophysical research (Ground-Penetrating Radar GPR and Electrical Resistivity Tomography ERT with geodesic service), (2) processing of the obtained geophysical research results, (3) modelling of GPR and ERT anomalies on a fractured water reservoir bottom, and (4) interpretation of the obtained results based on the modelled geophysical anomalies. The geophysical surveys allowed for distinguishing a zone with anomalous physical parameters in the area of the analysed part of the retention lake. ERT surveys have shown that the water escape zone from the reservoir was characterised by significantly decreased electrical resistivities. Diffraction hyperboles and a zone of wave attenuation were observed on the GPR images in the lake bottom within the water escape zone indicating cracks in the bottom of the water reservoir. The proposed methodology of geophysical surveys seems effective in solving untypical issues such as measurements on the water surface.

Need of specifying underground construction works for supporting further tasks as maintenance, repairing, or setting up new underground structures. For these needs, ground penetrating radar, one of the efficient geophysical methods, can bring high-resolution and quick underground image revealing existence of both natural and artificial anomalies. Its fixed receiver-transmitter antennas setting as constant offset is commonly used in urban areas. Conventionally, hyperbolae events are crucial indicator for scattering objects as kinds of pipes, water drainage system, and concrete building structures as well as sink holes. Calculation of their depths and sizes requires migration analysis with the environment velocity. Migrated sections with different velocity show different chaos degrees of transformation from a hyperbola diffraction curve to its focused area. We have researched diagrams of different Ground Penetrating Radar attributes as energy, entropy, and varimax dependent on two variables, velocity and window zone covering diffraction events from a set of synthetic data and real data, in specifying the environment velocity. We have developed a novel technique for evaluation of the ground velocity and object’s size by combination of the new varimax diagram and the Kirchhoff migration method. The technique can define contribution of diffracted ground penetrating radar waves for building the diagram after removing the reflection contribution. The synthetic datasets consist of different random background noise levels and expressions of different-sized circular and rectangular pipes. The real data is measured for detecting two underground gas pipes in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province, Vietnam.
Konieczność określenia parametrów podziemnych budowli ma na celu wytyczanie dalszych zadań, takich jak konserwacja, naprawa lub ustawianie nowych konstrukcji podziemnych. Dla tych potrzeb radar penetrujący ziemię, jedna z wydajnych metod geofizycznych, pozwala osiągnąć wysoką rozdzielczość podziemnego obrazu ukazującego istnienie zarówno naturalnych jak i sztucznych anomalii. Stałe ustawienie anten odbiornika i nadajnika jest powszechnie stosowane na obszarach miejskich. Konwencjonalnie opis za pomocą hiperboli jest kluczowym wskaźnikiem rozproszenia obiektów, takich jak rury, system odprowadzania wody i betonowe konstrukcje budowlane, a także ujścia wody. Obliczanie ich głębokości i rozmiarów wymaga analizy migracji w środowisku. Migracja o różnej prędkości pokazuje różne stopnie transformacji od krzywej dyfrakcji do jej zogniskowanego obszaru. Przebadano diagramy różnych nastawień radaru penetrującego grunt, takich jak energia, entropia i varimax, zależnych od dwóch zmiennych, prędkości i parametrów okna obejmującego dyfrakcję dla zestawu danych syntetycznych i danych rzeczywistych. Opracowano nową technikę oceny prędkości w gruncie i wielkości obiektu poprzez połączenie nowego diagramu varimax i metody migracji Kirchhoffa. Technika taka może zdefiniować udział fal radarowych w ugiętym gruncie na podstawie diagramu po usunięciu udziału odbicia. Syntetyczne zestawy danych składają się z różnych losowych poziomów hałasu tła i różnej wielkości rur okrągłych i prostokątnych. Rzeczywiste dane są mierzone w celu wykrycia dwóch podziemnych rur gazowych w Ba Ria – prowincja Vung Tau, Wietnam

The study uses quantitative methods to analyse the latest Bartonian to Early Rupelian sedimentary succession at the SE outskirts of the Polish Lowland Paleogene Basin, in the back-bulge zone of the Carpathian orogenorebulge. The vertical lithotype proportion diagrams from a large number of well logs are compiled to reveal the area’s sequence stratigraphy. Six sequences are recognized and correlated with 3rd-order eustatic sea level cycles. The basal sequence of type 1 is overlain by three sequences of type 2 and followed by a fifth sequence of type 1, whose depositional forced-regressive and lowstand systems tracts brought the main volume of quartz-glauconite sand to the study area. The study focuses further on the deposits of this fifth sequence, exposed and surveyed with GPR in the Nowodwór-Piaski sand pit. Their sedimentary facies analysis reveals the local spatial pattern of a wave-dominated and tidally-influenced sedimentation, supporting the earlier notions of a southern palaeoshoreline and a tectonically-controlled sedimentation.The analysis, aided by multidimensional GPR survey, indicates syndepositional development of a tectonic graben filled laterally by fault scarp-attached large sand bars and an axial action of tidal ebb currents. The bars were formed of shore-derived sand swept by littoral waves from the graben footwall areas. As the graben’s tectonic activity ceased, it became buried by the lowstand regressive sands overlain by gravelly foreshore deposits, most of which were later removed by the Pleistocene glacial erosion. A 3D model of the deposits in the Nowodwór-Piaski area is constructed on the basis of outcrop and GPR data with the use of multiple-point statistical methodology to depict the internal architecture, heterogeneity and spatial relationships of main sedimentary facies. The model can serve as a guide for the future exploration and exploitation of the quartz-glauconite sands in the area and as instructive example of how a petroleum reservoir model of a complex sedimentary succession can be constructed with the use of modern statistical methods.

The distribution of Permian alluvial fan lithofacies in a quarry at Zygmuntówka near Chęciny, Holy Cross Mts., in southern Poland was investigated using ground penetrating radar (GPR) in order to create a training image for multiple point statistics (MPS) reconstructions of alluvial fan sedimentary facies. Five pseudo-3D GPR datasets were collected, processed and uploaded for interpretation into SKUA-GOCAD 3D geological modelling software. Three radar facies were distinguished based on the 3D geometrical pattern of radar reflections and linked to lithofacies described from the quarry by Zbroja et al. (1998). A statistical summary showed that ~50% of the lithofacies resulted from gravity flows (mostly non-cohesive), while the remaining proportion was deposited by unconfined and confined flash floods. Fluvial sedimentary facies left by waning of catastrophic floods or reworking during fair weather, alihough not prevalent, could not be distinguished from confined flood deposits based only on GPR data. The GPR datasets together with information from field observations were used to carry out MPS simulations and estimate the most probable 3D model of lithofacies at the quarry scale. This model will in turn serve as a training image for MPS reconstructions of alluvial-fan facies of Rotliegend conglomerates in the multi-scale geological model of the Gorzów Block (western Poland).

Intensified investment processes in construction have resulted in increased interest in the methods of efficient detection, verification and location of underground utility networks. In addition to the well-known pipe and cable locating equipment, which has increased its efficiency and reliability through the development of technologies, GPRs are becoming more and more popular. This publication presents the results of the experimental research carried out with the use of GPRs manufactured by two different companies as well as the results of the verification of underground utilities in real conditions. The GPRs have worked in the mode of the real-time location of their own position using the GNSS system or robotic total stations. The GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) surveys performed on a test field, consisting of 9 pipes with a known position, were aimed at assessing the accuracy of their identification on echograms. The utility line location errors were determined using three different combinations between the GPR and the locating instrument. It allowed the evaluation of the possibility of using these solutions for detection, verification and location of underground utility networks in the light of the Polish legal regulations and the British specification PAS 128. The verification in real conditions was carried out in a typical urban space, characterised by an intense occurrence of underground utilities, that is, sewage systems, gas pipelines and power cables. It was based on the GESUT database captured from the county geodetic and cartographic documentation centre. The results of the visual analysis of the materials captured with the help of two measurement systems were described in detail, however, the verification was carried out only for one set of data. The authors have presented the procedure of processing echograms and detecting the location of pipeline axes based on their vectorisation. The authors of this research paper have performed a numerical analysis of the compliance of the profiles of utility lines with the information from the base map for two variants of the GPR data integration with the coordinates. The authors of this research paper have also presented an alternative concept of capturing the profile of a utility line in the field based on the processing of GPR data in 3D – the so-called C-scan. The conclusions summarise the possible factors affecting the surveying results and the methods of eliminating sources of errors, both for the GPR and geodetic data.

Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu poszukiwania zwłok ludzkich. Poszukiwania takie prowadzi się w przypadku podejrzenia popełniania zabójstwa, samobójstwa lub też niewyjaśnionego zaginięcia osoby, kiedy z okoliczności sprawy wynika, że osoba najprawdopodobniej nie żyje. Opisane zostały następujące metody poszukiwań: użycie psa specjalistycznego, metoda georadarowa, metoda fosforanowa, metoda sonarowa, metoda wykopów kontrolnych, metody poszukiwań w wodzie. Omówiono zagadnienie profilowania sprawców zabójstw, bowiem sposób postępowania ze zwłokami oraz miejsce ich ukrycia stanowią istotne wskazówki wykrywcze oraz dowodowe. Przedstawione zostały także aspekty związane ze współpracą interdyscyplinarną w przypadku niewyjaśnionych spraw, w których istnieje podejrzenie popełnienia zabójstwa, chociaż nie udało się ujawnić zwłok, takie jak współpraca z profilerem, a także z biegłymi z różnych dziedzin nauki.
This article focuses on the topie of searching for human corpses. Such searches are conducted when murder, suicide or unexplained disappearance is suspected, with the circumstances of the case indicating that the person is probably dead. The following search methods are described: use of a specially trained dog, ground-penetrating radar method, phosphate method, sonar method, test excavation method, water search methods. The profiling of murder perpetrators is also discussed sińce the way the corpse is treated and the site at which it is concealed are valuable tips for the detection and collection of evidence. Presented are also aspects of interdisciplinary cooperation in unexplained cases in which murder is suspected but the corpse has not been discovered, such as cooperation with profiler and experts in different scientific disciplines.

Geophysical research assists in clarifying the methodology of future building work. The geological structure in terms of lithological variation of Quaternary and older formations was identified in the area of the proposed garage near the ARENAobject in Krakow. In particular, the possibility of the presence of inserts of organic soils was determined. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) were used for more complete and comprehensive recognition of the ground. As a result of the study of the subsurface, thin interbeds of weak bearing organic soils have been found just outside the outline of the planned building. It was found that the Quaternary formations which were identified by geophysical and geotechnical methods are an appropriate ground for direct foundation of the object.

The paper presents a study on the use of the ground penetrating radar (GPR) method in diagnostics of a footbridge. It contains experimental investigations and numerical analyses of the electromagnetic field propagation using the finite difference time domain method (FDTD). The object of research was a reinforced concrete footbridge over a railway line. The calculations of the GPR field propagation were performed on a selected cross-section of the bridge. Three different damage scenarios (i.e. one missing rebar and two air voids with different shapes and locations) were investigated in FDTD simulations. Numerical GPR maps were compared with results of in-situ GPR surveys for the healthy footbridge.
W artykule przedstawiono użycie metody georadarowej w procesie diagnostyki kładki dla pieszych. Praca zawiera badania doświadczalne oraz analizy numeryczne propagacji pola elektromagnetycznego z wykorzystaniem metody różnic skończonych w dziedzinie czasu. Przedmiotem badań była żelbetowa kładka dla pieszych usytuowana nad torami kolejowymi. Obliczenia wykonano na przykładzie wybranego przekroju poprzecznego kładki. Rozważono trzy różne scenariusze uszkodzeń, tj. brak jednego z prętów zbrojeniowych oraz dwie pustki powietrzne o różnych kształtach i lokalizacjach. Wyniki symulacji porównano z wynikami badań doświadczalnych przeprowadzonych na nowo wybudowanym obiekcie.

SPOT-GPR (release 1.0) is a new freeware tool implementing an innovative Sub-Array Processing method, for the analysis of Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) data with the main purposes of detecting and localizing targets. The software is implemented in Matlab, it has a graphical user interface and a short manual. This work is the outcome of a series of three Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) funded by European COoperation in Science and Technology (COST) and carried out in the framework of the COST Action TU1208 “Civil Engineering Applications of Ground Penetrating Radar” (www.GPRadar.eu). The input of the software is a GPR radargram (B-scan). The radargram is partitioned in subradargrams, composed of a few traces (A-scans) each. The multi-frequency information enclosed in each trace is exploited and a set of dominant Directions of Arrival (DoA) of the electromagnetic field is calculated for each sub-radargram. The estimated angles are triangulated, obtaining a pattern of crossings that are condensed around target locations. Such pattern is filtered, in order to remove a noisy background of unwanted crossings, and is then processed by applying a statistical procedure. Finally, the targets are detected and their positions are predicted. For DoA estimation, the MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm is employed, in combination with the matched filter technique. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the matched filter technique is used for the processing of GPR data. The software has been tested on GPR synthetic radargrams, calculated by using the finite-difference time-domain simulator gprMax, with very good results.

Opis:
A method of processing GPR signals based on previously developed algorithms is proposed. The purpose of the study is to increase the accuracy of thickness measurements of near-surface thin layers of multilayer structures. The main idea of the method is to layer-by-layer restoration of physical and geometric characteristics of plane-layered media, for example, car coverings. As a result, with the help of numerical modelling, the operability and practical effectiveness of the proposed method was established. In addition, schemes for the practical implementation of this approach have been proposed for the processing of sounding data of pavement structures using a pulsed ground-penetrating radar "TRF-1". The use of additional procedures, for example, GPR calibration based on data obtained by core sampling, also improves the reliability and accuracy of assessing the current state of road pavements.

Technologia georadarowa (GPR) jest powszechnie stosowana do obrazowania obszarów podpowierzchniowych m.in. nawierzchni drogowych. Jest to metoda nieniszcząca, wykorzystująca do wykrywania sygnałów odbitych od konstrukcji podpowierzchniowych promieniowanie elektromagnetyczne w paśmie mikrofalowym. GPR transmituje do ziemi fale elektromagnetyczne, a gdy te uderzą w zakopany obiekt lub granicę materiałów o różnych stałych dielektrycznych, antena odbiorcza rejestruje zmiany w sygnale zwrotnym. Ważne jest, aby mieć podstawową wiedzę na temat działania georadaru, ponieważ jego możliwości, ale i ograniczenia są bezpośrednio skorelowane z nauką. W artykule charakteryzowano technologię georadarową ze zwróceniem szczególnej uwagi na ograniczenia stosowania metodologii. Opisuje możliwości zwiększenia efektywności pomiarów georadarowych i nowe obszary zastosowań.
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology is widely used for imaging the subsurface areas, including road structures. It is a non-destructive method that uses electromagnetic waves to detect signals reflected from sub-surface constructions. GPR transmits electromagnetic waves to the ground, and when these hit a buried object or boundary of materials with different dielectric parameters, the receiving antenna registers changes in the reflected signal. It is important to have a basic knowledge related to the operation of GPR, because its capabilities, but also limitations are directly correlated with science. The article describes GPR technology with particular attention to the limitations of the methodology. It describes the possibilities of increasing the GPR efficiency and new areas of applications.

W pracy przedstawiono problem rejestracji obrazu fizycznego gruntów organicznych, otrzymanego za pomocą trzech metod geofizycznych: georadarowej, elektrooporowej oraz sejsmiki refrakcyjnej. Badania wykonano na dwóch poligonach – Żuków i Całowanie, w obrębie których stwierdzono występowanie gruntów organicznych. Zastosowane metody geofizyczne pozwoliły na dokładne określenie warunków występowania warstwy gruntów organicznych.
In this paper the problem of registration of the physical image of organic soils by using chosen geophysical methods was presented. Three geophysical methods were applied to investigate the problem: ground penetrating radar, vertical electrical sounding and seismic refraction. Investigations were executed at two test sites – Żuków and Całowanie, in which an occurrence of the organic soils was affi rmed. The use of geophysical methods group allowed obtaining the accurate qualifi cation of occurrence conditions of organic soils.

Results of multidisciplinary research conducted on the island of Rab (Northeastern Adriatic, Croatia) are presented with particular focus on late Roman rural settlements and their economic activities. The settlement in Podšilo bay, Lopar peninsula, is analyzed in more detail, providing evidence on a vibrant local community engaged in diversified craft activities and the exploitation of local land and marine resources. Along with the specificities of its layout and organization, this site also presents unique possibilities to study environmental factors that influenced its setup and economy, but also its demise, tentatively placed within the 6th century AD.

This paper presents a suggested approach for forensic investigation of bridge decks in which Ground penetrating radar (GPR) consisting of two antennas is used to assess the current conditions. The methodology was tested on a bridge deck in central Sicily. The acquired data were analyzed for identifying the asphalt overlay thickness, concrete cover depth and deck thickness and location of the rebar reinforcement. In the proposed approach for assessing bridge deck conditions the GPR survey was complemented with (i) a site investigation on layer thicknesses for calibration/verification purposes of the GPR response and (ii) a Terrestrial Laser Scanning system (TLS) to verify the bridge design slab curvature. The study shows that this methodology has significant merits on accurately assessing such bridge deck components when bridge design records are non-existing, and by using non-invasive methods such as laser scanning and GPR. The great advantage provided by the TLS technique is the possibility to obtain a 3D output model of the scanned element with the accuracy of the best topographic instruments in order to complement GPR data surveys for bridge inspection.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and sedimentological outcrop analyses were combined in order to determine the reflection patterns and internal architecture of terrace deposits of the Vistula River at Kępa Zawadowska in the southern part of Warsaw (central Poland). The sedimentary analyses concerned the granulometric composition and lithofacies analysis. The 34 GPR profiles, which were obtained in two outcrops, using a Malå RAMAC/GPR system with 500-MHz and 250-MHz shielded antennas, were up to 100 m long. The most characteristic ground-penetrating radar profiles are presented; they show a high-resolution data set of radar facies. The GPR data suggest the presence of three geophysically different units, namely with high-angle inclined reflections (radar facies 1), with discontinuous undulating or trough-shaped reflections (radar facies 2), and with low-angle reflections (radar facies 3). The internal structure of the fluvial deposits was obtained by integration of the GPR and sedimentological data, which combination provides a more accurate visualisation of sedimentary units than do reconstructions that are based only on standard lithologic point data.

The purpose of this paper was to analyze the effect of detailed recognition and correct mapping of the boundaries between layers of different grain sizes on the results of modelling tests of the vadose zone. The modelling was performed using UnSat Suite software that enables modelling of water permeability and migration ofpollutants through the vadose zone using various numerical programs, including VS2DT that was used in this case study. Directfield research, including drilling of boreholes and ground-penetrating radar investigation, has shown a significant variation in lithology of the vadose zone in a small test area located in Włocławek city. Various sand fractions have been found: from fine to coarse sand, with varying filtration parameters and moisture content. Ground-penetrating radar investigations have enabled a more accurate recognition and refinement ofgeologic structures, particularly in the context oflithological boundaries, including the space between boreholes. The results of the modelling tests conducted in the vadose zone enabled determination of the velocity, time and volume of infiltration water.
