Industrial symbioses are intended to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources and avoid waste through closed material cycles. The waste and residual materials of one actor become the resource of the other. The better use of raw materials can lead to cost and competitive advantages for the involved partners. The UBIS project investigates the realization of such industrial symbioses. Two showcases from the project region with focus on anaerobic digestion illustrate the effectiveness of industrial symbioses.

In many problems of transportation and environmental processes and designs, fitting of a continuous probability distribution to the greenhouse gas emissions data from cars may be helpful in predicting the probability or forecasting the frequency of occurrence of the greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuel for our cars, trucks, ships, trains, and planes, and planning beforehand. The objective of this paper is to study and conduct a statistical analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions data from cars. Since our data are skewed in nature, we fit the following well known skewed distributions: 3 parameter Birnbaum-Saunders (or fatigue-life), gamma, 3 parameter gamma, generalized extreme value, 3 parameter lognormal, 4 parameter Pearson 6 and Weibull distributions. We have tested the goodness of fit these distributions to a random sample of the greenhouse gas emissions data from 32 different models of cars to determine their applicability and best fit to these data based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling, and Chi-Squared Goodness-of-Fit Tests.

The article focuses on analysis of activities for climate protection within the transatlantic cooperation. In the first part of the study general determinants, interests and aims of the EU and the U.S. climate policies have been presented. The divergent interests and different European and American development priorities condition their mixed actions for climate protection, both at domestic level and within the frameworks of international climate negotiations. In the second part of the article difficulties in working out a common position of the EU and the U.S. on global activities for climate protection that consist on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions have been discussed. The analysis encompasses the reasons and implications of the specific U.S. and EU’s stances within the process of negotiations of new global climate agreement with ambitious reduction aims that should be signed in 2015 and implemented after 2020 (post-Kyoto). In the last part of the study some aspects of U.S. and EU’s actions for climate protection within the frameworks of transatlantic cooperation have been presented. The EU aimed at convincing the U.S. about the necessity for reduction of global temperature by two Celsius degrees relative to the level from preindustrial period and at adoption multiyear obligations as to reduction greenhouse gas emissions. That is why these issues have been included into the program of transatlantic cooperation.

Research background: The production and use of energy satisfies human needs, but also gives rise to a host of adverse environmental pressures, such as air pollution and waste generation. The issue of energy efficiency and climate chance resonates in the energy sector as one of the main producers of green-house gas emissions (GHG). While the European Union in general is doing well in reducing emissions and increasing the share of renewables, unfortunately, there are countries that are still far from reaching their goal. Purpose of the article: The paper is focused on the quantitative assessment of the link between the economic growth of the energy sector and the production of GHG emissions by the energy sector in V4 countries during the period 1995?2016. For this purpose, decoupling analysis will be realized. Methods: The decoupling of economic growth and the environmental pressures caused by this growth has a rich tradition within the sustainable development literature. The decoupling method was chosen for its ability to link economic and environmental indicators. Decoupling elasticity will be calculated with the aim of assessing the relationship between the economic growth of the energy sector (measured in GVA) and GHG emissions produced by the energy sector in V4 countries within the research period. Decoupling elasticity indicates different forms of the decoupling and coupling of the two variables. Findings & Value added: The results of the analysis suggest the prevailing strong decoupling of the economic growth of the energy sector and GHG emissions produced by the energy sector, which can be considered a positive trend. The findings of this paper are relevant for the government, state and public institutions and stakeholders in general, who play important roles in the preparation of programs, projects and policies to make energy generation, transport and use more efficient and environmentally sustainable.

The greenhouse gas emissions from transport have registered a severe increase over the years about 23% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions resulted from burning fossil fuels worldwide. In this context, it is observed the increasing need to shift to sustainable transport patterns for taking into consideration a wide-scale use of alternative energy sources (e.g. bio-fuels, biogas) and also, the investments in environmental technologies research and development etc. Romania has a national transport system situated on average level in terms of conventional standards of Europe's transport system. But, it was noted that the infrastructure of roads, railways, maritime and air transport is vulnerable in terms of extreme weather conditions. Considering the indirect effects of climate change, they are manifested by deteriorating road and rail infrastructure. The paper presents some of the measures adapted by Romania to reduce the greenhouse emissions produced by the transport sector. The adaptation of the Romanian transport sector to climate change impacts should take into account the use of technologies by focusing on increased safety standards, and ensuring continuity of services. In order to implement these measures it is increased the need to invest into designing vehicles that can withstand the adverse effects of climate change. The new transport infrastructure and means of transport should be designed, beginning with the design phase, in order to be resilient to the effects of the climate change.
Emisje gazów cieplarnianych pochodzących z transportu odnotowały silny wzrost w ciągu roku, wzrost dwutlenku węgla (CO2) o 23% wynikał ze spalania paliw kopalnych na całym świecie. W tym kontekście należy zauważyć rosnącą potrzebę przejścia do zrównoważonych modeli transportu dla uwzględnienia na szeroką skalę wykorzystania alternatywnych źródeł energii (np. biopaliwa, biogaz), a także inwestycji w zakresie badań środowiska, technologii i rozwoju itp. Rumunia posiada krajowy system transportowy który znajduje się na średnim poziomie w zakresie konwencjonalnych standardów europejskiego systemu transportu. Ale zauważono, że infrastruktura dróg, linii kolejowych, transportu morskiego i lotniczego jest podatna na działania ekstremalnych warunków pogodowych. Biorąc pod uwagę pośrednie skutki zmian klimatu, manifestują się one drogą pogarszającej infrastruktury kolejowej. Przedstawiono niektóre z działań dostosowanych przez Rumunię do zmniejszenia emisji gazów cieplarnianych pochodzących z sektora transportu. Dostosowanie sektora transportowego do rumuńskiego skutków zmian klimatu powinny uwzględniać wykorzystanie technologii poprzez skupienie się na zwiększenie standardów bezpieczeństwa i zapewnienia ciągłości usług. W celu wykonania tych środków jest zwiększona konieczność inwestowania w projektowanie pojazdów, które mogą wytrzymać niekorzystne skutki zmian klimatycznych. Nowa infrastruktura transportowa i środki transportu powinny być zaprojektowane, począwszy od fazy projektowania, aby być odporne na skutki zmian klimatycznych.

Greenhouse gas control it is key aspect for climate protection. The positioning of corporations concerning greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) has changed profoundly in the past two decades. As climate regulation became inevitable, companies started adopting more proactive strategies. One of the effective methods for greenhouse gas emission calculation is based on life cycle analysis. A carbon footprint is defined as the sum of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event, or product and is expressed in terms of CO2 equivalents (CO2-e). Our investigations were devoted to greenhouse emission assessment during life cycle of willow wood production from short rotation coppice plantations. In accordance with results about 48% of carbon dioxide gas from all life cycle of willow was emitted during wood harvesting and transportation to energy plants. It is necessary to optimize the logistic scheme of willow wood harvesting and transportation for decreasing of greenhouse gas emission. The substitutions of fossil fuel by willow wood enable to save 11733 ton CO2-e from 30 hectares of willow plantation. The carbon tax for instance in Australia starting at AU$ 23 a ton of Carbon Dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). Thus, the substitute of fossil fuel by willow wood may have profit as for regional so and for local level of production.

One of the main features of energy production in Poland is high dependence on consumption of coal and lignite, which results in significant emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the atmosphere. This article presents the geo- information technology and spatial analysis of GHG emissions from fossil fuel burned by power and combined power and heat plants. These plants are considered as emission sources of a point type. As input data, official regional statistics about consumption of fossil fuel for electricity and heat production are used. In addition, main characteristics of power and power/ heat plants are collected from official web-sites. Based on the developed model, numerical experiments have been carried out for the territory of Poland. The results of spatial modeling are presented in the form of thematic maps.

The improper adjustment of the release characteristics of commonly used mineral fertilizers to the nutritional requirements of plants results in the loss of a significant part of them by infiltration into the soil profile or in the form of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Legal regulations including the national emission ceilings directive, require the Member States of European Union to limit ammonia emissions from agriculture. In order to minimize the losses of valuable nutrients and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions it is necessary to find new solutions and technologies in agriculture. Specialists emphasize the beneficial effects of localized fertilization methods and the use of the slow-release/controlled-release fertilizers. Field studies conducted on newly obtained fertilizers prove their beneficial effect on the quality and quantity of the crop but currently the products offered on the market are too expensive to use in large acreage crops. This article presents an overview of some particular economic, legal and practical aspects of slow-release fertilizer production and use. Additionally, the results of field tests indicating their beneficial effect on plant yield, the plant response to stressful conditions and methods for environmental protection are also presented.

Opis:
Pure plant oil fuels, used in compatible agricultural machinery contribute to sustainable food supply. Especially rapeseed oil fuel significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions up to 91 % and thus, lowers the carbon footprint of agricultural products. However, despite this advantage plant oil fuels are barely used in practice, because of technical, economical and sustainability concerns of potential users. It is the purpose of this work, to show the reliability, downtimes and the emission behaviour of pure rapeseed oil compatible tractors in practice. As test fuel, cold-pressed rapeseed oil fuel, complying with the national German standard DIN 51605 was used. Emission testing on the tractor test stand is based on the standard procedure of EU guideline 2016/1628. Differing from type approvals, where engine test stands are used, here the measurement is done at the tractors with mounted engines. The power is measured at the power take-off (PTO) with a dynamometer. As testing cycle, the Non-Road-Steady-Cycle (NRSC) and an adapted Non-Road-Transient-Cycle (10sNRTC) are applied. For real driving emission (RDE) measurements, two state-of-the-art tractors are being used. By using a PEMS Semtech Ecostar, which was set up in a box for off-road use, the emission components CO, HC, NOX are measured. Investigation of the monitored 20 tractors (exhaust stages I, II, IIIA, IIIB and IV) for more than 60.000 hours, showed no considerable failures or damages. Generally, the limited exhaust gas components (NOX, CO, HC, PM) determined at a tractor test stand remained nearly at the same level over the operating time. Plant oil tractors with exhaust gas stage IV achieve the legal emission limits with rapeseed oil fuel during both, the NRSC and 10sNRTC. Results of RDE measurements also show that recorded emission values are within expected limiting values for both fuels. Conformity factors that relate actual emissions, measured with PEMS, to corresponding test cycle values, measured at the test stand are within approaching legitimacy.

The aim of the study was to determine greenhouse gases emission factors from fattening pigs kept on deep litter and on fully slatted floor in order to compare them. The emissions were measured from July to September 2013. The buildings were located in the farms in the neighbourhood, in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship. Gas concentrations were measured by photo – acoustic spectrometer Multi Gas Monitor INNOVA 1312. The average value of CO2 emission factor was 105 g·day-1·kg-1 (VCO2=29%) for the deep litter and 62 g· day-1·kg-1 (VCO2=31%) for a system with a fully slatted floor. For N2O value was respectively 0.047 g· day-1· kg-1 (VN2O=31%) and 0,027 g· day-1· kg-1 (VN2O=34%). The CH4 emission factor value was respectively 0.809 g· day-1· kg-1 (VCH4=63%) and 0.715 g· day-1· kg-1 (VCH4=30%). The emission factors of researched gases were higher in deep litter fattening house, for CO2 by 69%, for N2O by 74% and for CH4 by 13% than in the building with a fully slatted floor. According to the warming potentials of greenhouse gases, rearing pigs on deep litter would emit 59% more of CO2 –equivalents.
Celem pracy było określenie i porównanie emisji gazów cieplarnianych z tuczarni na głębokiej ściółce i z budynku dla tuczników z podłogą szczelinową (system bezściołowy). Badania przeprowadzono, w sezonie letnim, od lipca do września 2013 roku. Budynki były zlokalizowane w województwie wielkopolskim, na terenie gospodarstw, będących w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie. Stężenie gazów mierzono foto-akustycznym spektrometrem Multi Gas Monitor 1312. Średnie wartości wskaźników emisji z budynku z podłogą szczelinową wynosiły: CO2 – 62 g·doba-1·kg-1, N2O – 0,027 g doba-1· kg-1 i CH4 – 0,715 g· doba-1· kg-1. W tuczarni z systemem utrzymania na głębokiej ściółce przyjmowały wartości: CO2 – 105 g· doba-1·kg-1, N2O – 0,047 g·doba-1·kg-1 i CH4 – 0,809 g· doba-1· kg-1 i były one większe odpowiednio o 69%, 74% oraz 13%. Po przeliczeniu wartości wskaźników na ekwiwalent CO2 system utrzymania na głębokiej ściółce charakteryzuje się o 59% większym potencjałem tworzenia efektu cieplarnianego.

The European Council has set the target to reduce European greenhouse gas emissions by 20% till 2020. The negative impacts of urban goods distribution are mainly caused by used vehicles (e.g. diesel-powered) and low system efficiency (e.g. low loading factor, low cooperation). The paper is focused on the new project – Low Carbon Logistic. It’s realized under the Interreg South Baltic Programme. The major objective of this project is to implement the low carbon city logistics measures in 5 pilot cities as well as to promote and support this kind of activities in South Baltic Region.
Rada Europejska wyznaczyła cel, jakim jest zmniejszenie emisji gazów cieplarnianych w Europie o 20% do 2020 r. Negatywne skutki dystrybucji towarów w miastach wynikają głównie z charakterystyki stosowanych pojazdów (np. z silnikiem diesla) i niskiej wydajności systemu (np. niski współczynnik obciążenia, słaba współpraca). Artykuł koncentruje się na nowym projekcie - Low Carbon Logistic. Jest on realizowany w ramach programu Interreg South Baltic. Głównym celem tego projektu jest wdrożenie działań w zakresie niskoemisyjnej logistyki miejskiej w 5 miastach pilotażowych, a także promowanie i wspieranie tego typu działań w regionie Południowego Bałtyku.

Artykuł prezentuje analizę zużycia energii elektrycznej przez własne urządzenia abonenta przyłączane do szerokopasmowej sieci dostępowej nowej generacji oraz jego konsekwencje dla systemu energetycznego i środowiska naturalnego. Dostęp do usług oferowanych przez sieć szerokopasmową motywuje abonenta do wyposażenia gospodarstwa domowego w nowe urządzenia elektroniczne jak komputery i odbiorniki telewizyjne HD oraz bardziej intensywnej eksploatacji już posiadanych, prowadząc do wzrostu zużycia energii elektrycznej. Problem ten jest zwykle pomijany w literaturze, gdzie dominują analizy ograniczone do zużycia energii w samej sieci telekomunikacyjnej, tworzące złudny niestety obraz "zielonej" technologii. The paper presents an analysis of energy consumption by electronic devices in household with access to fast broadband, especially NGA, and its consequences for national power system and natural environment. Access to services provided by fast broadband network motivates households to buy new electronics like PCs or net-enabled TV sets, and to use existing devices more intensively, leading to increase of electricity consumption. This issue is omitted in most studies, limited to analysis of power consumption in the network itself, and creating a false picture of broadband as a "green" technology. Additionally, an analysis of direct and indirect economic effects of nationwide NGA deployment in Poland is included.

Opis:
Retrofitting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in existing buildings and applying energy-efficient technologies can significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions. In this work, two options of HVAC retrofitting were proposed and discussed for the existing heating system of school of engineering at the University of Jordan as a case study. The experimental tests showed that only one of the three diesel boilers work normally while the other two boilers are not efficient, with actual efficiency of 25%. The first retrofitting was to upgrade the existing heating system to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) boiler system with estimated annual saving of 29,757 Jordanian dinar (JOD), and a payback period of 3.9 years. The second option for retrofitting was a new HVAC system for the building including heating and air conditioning with a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system and heat pump chiller. The estimated cost showed that the VRF system was the lowest one in running cost in winter. The diesel boilers had the highest greenhouse gas emissions with an average value of 377.3 tons of CO2 per year, while LPG boilers achieved the second highest emissions of around 279 tons of CO2 per year, whereas the heat pump chiller in winter produced 199 tons of CO2 and the VRF system emitted 180 tons in winter. The LCCA economic analysis was performed for the proposed systems, showing that the LPG boilers system was more feasible than the diesel boilers system, while the VRF system was more feasible than the heat pump chiller system.

Opis:
The objective of this article is to present an analysis of the utilization of renewable energy sources in Latvia and Poland since their accession to the European Union (EU), and to evaluate the progress made in meeting the environmental targets established by the EU through the implementation of Directive 2009/28/EC. The analysis is based on data obtained from the "Our World in Data" database as well as government documents. The findings reveal that while Latvia has successfully met the EU requirements, Poland has yet to achieve the set targets. However, Poland efforts in the development of renewable energy sources indicate a promising trajectory, mirroring those undertaken by Latvia. These implemented measures can serve as a valuable reference for other countries in their pursuit of a greener future.

Od 2005 roku we wszystkich państwach należących do UE funkcjonuje unijny system handlu uprawnieniami do emisji gazów cieplarnianych (EU ETS – European Union Emissions Trading System). Systemem tym są objęci emitenci instalacji spalania paliw i instalacji przemysłowych oraz emitenci statków powietrznych. Operatorzy instalacji objętych systemem EU ETS rozliczają się corocznie z wyemitowanej ilości gazów cieplarnianych w ramach danego okresu rozliczeniowego. Ustalono trzy okresy rozliczeniowe, obejmujące lata 2005-2007, 2008-2012 oraz 2013-2020. Przewidywane jest dalsze funkcjonowanie systemu EU ETS po 2020 roku. Celem artykułu jest próba ukazania wpływu wprowadzenia EU ETS na rozwój gospodarczy Polski.
Since 2005, the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) has been operating in all EU Member States. This system is covered by issuers of fuel and industrial combustion installations and aircraft issuers. Operators of installations covered by the EU ETS shall settle annually on the emission of greenhouse gases within a given accounting period. Three settlement periods, covering the years 2005-2007, 2008-2012 and 2013- 2020, were established. It is expected that the EU ETS will continue functioning after 2020. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the impact of EU ETS on Poland’s economic development.
