    Opis:
    The article aims to present one of the possible interpretations of a unique noun ekchyton found in the epigram of Palladas of Alexandria AP IX 395. As its meaning seems at least doubtful, it makes the satisfactory translation and interpretation of the poem utterly unachievable. The problem may be solved, if we recognize the word ekchyton as a sociolect, which corresponds with another noun egchytos that is sufficiently attested in ancient Greek literature. The analysis of source texts lets us interpret the meaning of the word egchytos as a kind of elegant baking that consists of finely ground flour, a large amount of honey, eggs and cottage cheese or sour milk. Ekchyton, in that case, can be interpreted as ‘a honey cake with cheese’.

    Artykuł przedstawia dostępne świadectwa dokumentujące istnienie hellenistycznych książek zbierających epigramy i analizuje naturę poetyckich antologii, czyli książek poetyckich, w tym okresie. Omówione zostały dwa dokumenty o zasadniczym znaczeniu: „zwój mediolański”, papirusowa antologia z III w. przed Chr. zawierająca epigramy przypisane Posejdipposowi, i tak zwane „wiedeńskie incipity epigramów”, papirus z tego samego okresu przechowujący listę epigramatycznych incipitów, zapewne podstawa do ułożenia nowej antologii. Zbieranie poezji, zwłaszcza epigramów, jest podstawowym, charakterystycznym środkiem komunikacji poetyckiej w epoce hellenistycznej, co ma konsekwencje dla statusu poszczególnych utworów. Trafniej postrzegać je jako części większej całości − fragmenty − niż autonomiczne jednostki.
    This paper presents available evidence of Hellenistic epigram books and discusses the character of the poetic anthologies, i.e. poetry books of that period. Two major documents discussed in the article are the “Milan Papyrus” − a third-century BC anthology of epigrams ascribed to Posidippus, and the so-called “Vienna Epigram Papyrus” − a papyrus of the same period including a list of epigram incipits, presumably as a basis for compiling a new anthology. It is argued here that collecting poetry, epigrams in particular, is an essential and specific means of poetic communication in the Hellenistic age, which affect the status of a single poem. It is best to conceptualize an epigram as a part of a larger whole − a fragment − rather than a self-contained entity.

    Posidippus’ Andriantopoiika (epigrams 62-70 Austin-Bastianini), in accordance with their subject heading, deal with statue-making. Nearly every epigram contains phrases alluding to sculpting. One of the poet’s chief concerns was to show the criteria of the perfect art. The section begins with a direct appeal to sculptors to imitate ‘these works’ (probably those presented by Posidippus in the cluster that follows) and to leave aside ‘ancient rules for larger-than-lifesize statues’. In one poem (63) the poet proclaims a ‘canon of truth’, i.e. of realism, as the desirable style of sculpture. Miniaturism and polish are also highly valued. Although Posidippus praises other masters too — including older ones — the precedence is given to Lysippus, the favourite sculptor of Alexander whose presumed lawful successors were the Ptolemies. The section as a whole certainly gives a valuable clue to the principles of Hellenistic art. Most of these poems can be classified as ekphrastic. Their form and underlying conception prove that Posidippus had an ambition to create a varied type of ekphrasis, in its content considerably independent of the described work of art. In the Andriantopoiika, the poet inserts, among other things, a historical comment (68), an anecdote (66), and literary allusions (64). His formal addressees include the spectator (64, 67), the artist who created a given work of art (65), and even the work or its elements themselves (64). However, it is always the reader who remains the intended addressee of each poem. The poet neither simply presents the sculptures nor states the plain facts connected with them. His epigrams serve specific ideological purposes, as they promote the cultural policy of the Ptolemies, consciously adopting the aesthetic preferences of Alexander.
