Opis:
The paper discusses some similarities between Aeschylus and the parodos of Sophocles’ Antigone. The chorus in the Antigone is a group of royal counsellors whose social status reminds us of the choruses of Persians and Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. As such, it plays similar functions: it is dramatic and plays the role of a commentary. Like the choruses in Aeschylus, in which the old tragedian penetrates into the past following the principle of retrospection, Sophocles in the introductory part of his chorus also refers to a scene of the event from pre-action (Vorgeschichte) and submits it to a commentary in lyrical and reflective manifestations. Introducing narrative elements into the song of parodos, Sophocles – following Aeschylus – does not make his chorus relate the events in a chronological order, but uses “the technique of editing”. He cuts them into certain units and remodels them in time in order to submit them to poetization or reflection, or to expose them as meaningful for the further course of action. In the final part of the paper, the author discusses Aeschylean reminiscences which he noticed in the linguistic layer of the parodos.

Opis:
The author presents the new fragments of Sappho (P. Koeln 21351 + 21376) and Archilochus (P. Oxy. LXIX 4708), gives a short review of the research to date, makes some textual and intepretative suggestions of his own, and adds an 'apparatus criticus' to the text of Sappho proposed by Gronewald and Daniel. At the end of the first fragment of Sappho (line 8), he reads 'qala/mois a)ei/dw' ('nuptias cano'), which, as a periphrastic generic term, together with a possible mention of the poems for the girls in the lost part of the same line, would cover the whole field of Sappho's poetry. In line 18 of the Cologne papyrus (i.e., line 10 of the second poem), he reads the fifth letter as 'phi' (following West), but then puts forward an entirely new reading of the rest of the disputable phrase, suggesting 'e)/rwi fi/la qei=san' ('amori indulgentem'); if the fifth letter is 'delta' (the reading the Cologne papyrologists strongly insist upon), he alternatively proposes 'de/ma qei=san'. As to the new Archilochus, in the author's opinion it is unlikely that lines 21-25 (in which Hercules' name appears) allude to Telephus' flight from the enemy, since the function of the whole 'exemplum' is exclusively to extol the success of that hero.

The article contains a new Polish translation of the fragment of Theopompus' Meropis preserved by Aelian. The translation is accompanied by notes pointing out similar ideas in other ancient writers. After discussing various earlier proposals of interpretation, the author concludes that Theopompus' myth should be considered from three perspectives: as an interesting story meant to fascinate the reader; as a polemic against Plato, parodying motifs found in his dialogues; and as an allegory presenting human fate in the spirit of archaic pessimism.

EURIPIDES - HECUBA
GHOST OF POLYDORUS
GREEK LITERATURE
Opis:
The prologue of Euripides' Hecuba is delivered by the ghost of Polydorus, one of the sons of Hecuba and Priam. Polydorus tells the spectators about his own fate and mentions the earlier apparition of the spirit of Achilles, who demanded that the Greeks sacrifice the captive Polyxena to him. The present article centres on the questions of why Euripides introduced the ghost of Polydorus on stage and what his spectre has in common with the dream related by Hecuba just after the prologue. It is argued that, by introducing the ghost scene, Euripides creates a link between his play and Sophocles' Polyxena.

Opis:
The article contains an analysis of the preserved fragments of Hecataeus of Abdera's work 'On the Hyperboreans' and a Polish translation of the most important ones. It seems that Hecataeus did not intend to depict an ideal of the pious and virtuous life in order to edify the reader. 'On the Hyperboreans' was not a utopia in the strict sense of the term. It was meant to be an entertaining novel describing a journey to a miraculous country. The writer probably did not imitate Pytheas of Massilia's work 'On the Ocean'. One should reject the hypothesis that Hecataeus' Hyperboreans were modeled on the Egyptians.

Mnimouria – a modest country cemetery plays an important role in the novels by Alexandros Papadiamantis. While the pretentious offi cial First Cemetery of Athens displays the wealth of the nouveaux riches who strive to imitate in an artifi cial and exaggerated manner various forms of tombs of the ancient Greek Kerameikos in an attempt to prove their ancient ancestry, Papadiamantis in his picture of Skiathos little koimeterion manages to place it both in the order of nature and in the world of culture. He shows us, sometimes not without a mild irony, how the old pagan beliefs and superstitions such as: evil-eye, curses, ghosts and apparitions still coexist harmoniously with sincere Christian faith of his simple compatriots in an island where one could hear the pipe of a young shepherd, who could have been perhaps a satyr, or glimpse a strange shape, possibly of a Nymph or a Naiad (neraida).

Opis:
The Influence of Ancient Greek Culture on Macedonian Literature of the 19th CenturyIn Macedonia under the Ottoman rule during the nineteenth century, the Macedonian people-the nation is subject to political pressure and the cultural influence of Turkey and other countries. Under the influence of propaganda leading by Athens and education politics in the area of contemporary Republic of Macedonia, some Macedonian militant intellectuals embraced, at the same time, were influenced by romanticism and the Old-Greek culture, which strongly affect their literary works. In this context, two authors are viewed as the most significant-Jordan Hadji Murad Konstantinov Džinot and Grigor Prlichev. Džinot is the author of dramatized dialogue inspired by the classic Greek mythology, at the school, where he is a teacher. On the pages of the press he announces the publication of its ancient-themed dramas, however, for unknown reasons, none of them does not appear in print. Prlichev well knew the Old-Greek and is an admirer of the works of Homer. Influenced by the poetry of Homer writes in an epic poem in the archaized Greek.
