Opis:
Graves’ orbitopathy is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the inflammation of orbital tissues. The course of disease can be described in terms of its activity and severity. Aim: The aim of our study was to determine the factors affecting the activity and severity of Graves’ orbitopathy, as well as to identify the predictive factors of poor response to glucocorticoid treatment followed by orbital irradiation. Methods: We performed a prospective observational study of 214 patients with Graves’ orbitopathy who were divided into two groups depending on the treatment they had previously obtained for their Graves’ disease. They received i.v. methylprednisolone pulses followed by orbital radiotherapy. They were examined and had their TSH, TRAb and FT4 levels evaluated prior to treatment and after 1, 6 and 12 months. Results: A pre-treatment TRAb concentration higher by one unit (U/L) implied a mean increase in the relative risk of active orbitopathy by 4.7% (p = 0.0362). A TRAb concentration higher by one U/L 1 month after treatment implied a mean increase in the relative risk of moderate-to-severe and severe GO by 8.7% (p = 0.0167) 6 months after treatment. As regards poor response to treatment, patients with moderate-to-severe and severe Graves’ orbitopathy on admission carried a higher risk of being non-responders. Each point scored on the NOSPECS scale prior to treatment increased the relative risk of the patient being a non-responder by 30%. Conclusions: Patients with higher TRAb levels have a higher risk of active Graves’ orbitopathy and moderate-to-severe and severe Graves’ orbitopathy. Monitoring TRAb serum concentration in those patients is of great importance. Patients with more severe Graves’ orbitopathy carry a higher risk of being poor responders to immunosuppressive treatment. Therefore, careful monitoring of patients with Graves’ orbitopathy and their early referral to specialized centers is essential.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to outline the need to reconceptualized the early medieval burials of “vampires” from Poland. These burials are understood as the remains of the so-called “anti- vampire” practices resulting from the social perception of bad death. These, in turn, are recognized as a socio-religious phenomenon, the assumption of which was to postpone the evil actions of the ‘vampire’ by means of certain measures. Due to doubts about the term “vampire”, concerning both the linguistic sphere and the cultural and historical realities, it is suggested not to use it. The proposed alternative, more precise terms would therefore be the terms “returning dead” or “(un)dead”. Another issue raised is the setting of ‘anti-vampire’ burials in an atypical framework. “Anti-vampirical” burials meet the criteria of atypicality on a macro scale, however, it is possible to consider them typical, assuming that they functioned in the culture of Western Slavs in the early Middle Ages as belonging to a specific social group.

Opis:
The article presents the analyses and descriptions of two graves in the Dziekanowice grave field, site 22 (dated back to the late 10th – the late 13th centuries) located on the eastern coast of lake Lednica, approx. 90 m from the eastern bridge leading to Ostrów Lednicki. The isle hosts a hillfort regarded a seat of the then ruler, the sedes regni principales. Within the gord, in the second half of the 10th century, a complex of residential and sacral buildings was raised: a baptistery, a palas and a church. The burial rite as of the late 10th and the early 11th centuries, which appeared in what is now Poland’s territory, is typically associated with Christianity encroaching the area. The issues under discussion, which are not fully explained, include both the ways in which the dead were buried before skeletal burials were introduced and popularised, the methods used to promote the changes, acceptance thereof, the rate and the prevalence of the new mode of burying the dead. In the course of extended excavations in the Dziekanowice 22 grave field, 1,665 graves have been discovered with preserved bone material, among them two graves where cremated bodies were laid (cremation burial). The graves have been dated back to the early Middle Ages (the time of the grave field’s operation).

The article concerns the discovery of the new Przeworsk culture burial ground, which is only the second known burial site from the Upper San River basin, beside of necropolis located in Prusiek site 25. The site 33 in Pakoszówka was excavated completely during field works carried out between 2015 - 2018. During the excavations, a number of richly furnished burials were discovered, including extraordinary double warrior grave. Beside of graves where metal parts of weaponry were found, a few graves without rich inventory were discovered. The site is dated to the end of the Early Roman Period and the late Phase C1 of the Younger Roman Period. The burial ground in Pakoszówka corresponds well with the recent funeral finds from Rankovce located in Eastern Slovakia (Košice Region). Together with finds from the Upper Tisa River basin, it indicates migration of the Przeworsk culture population to the areas bordering the Roman Empire in this turbulent time and the special role it played in the events of the end of the second century A.D.

The cemetery in Marianowo is the first non-megalithic burial site of the Funnel Beaker culture (hereinafter referred to as TRB from German Trichterbecherkultur), which has been recorded in eastern Wielkopolska. It is also the first one where biritual funeral rites have been adopted. Despite the poor evidence, it might be generally dated to the Classic Wiórek phase (III), and even to sub-phase IIIC of TRB. All six unearthed burials were of children, and the question of the reason why one of them was cremated provides a wide range of interpretative alternatives.

VDR polymorphisms
Opis:
Graves' (GD) hyperthyroidism induces accelerated bone turnover that leads to decreased bone mineral density (BMD). The role of the VDR gene in predisposition to primary osteoporosis has been recognized. Recent studies show associations between the VDR gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. Here we analyzed if VDR gene polymorphisms: BsmI, ApaI, TaqI, and FokI may predispose women with Graves' hyperthyroidism to BMD reduction or to disease development. The subjects were 75 premenopausal female Polish patients with GD and 163 healthy women. The genotyping was performed by the use of the restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (RFLP). We studied the association of the VDR polymorphisms and their haplotypes with patients' BMD and also SNPs and haplotypes association with Graves' disease. We found a strong linkage disequilibrium for the BsmI, ApaI, and TaqI polymorphims that formed three most frequent haplotypes in Graves' women: baT (47.9%), BAt (34.9%), and bAT (16.4%). We did not show statistically significant association of analyzed VDR polymorphisms or haplotypes with decreased bone mineral density in Graves' patients. However, the presence of F allele had a weak tendency to be associated with Graves' disease (with OR=1.93; 95% CI: 0.97-3.84; p=0.058). In conclusion: VDR gene polymorphisms do not predict the risk of decreased BMD in Polish women with Graves'. It may be speculated that the F allele carriers of the VDR-FokI polymorphism are predisposed to Graves' disease development.

Opis:
Introduction. Grave’s disease (GD) can be treated using three modalities: anti-thyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy (RAI), or surgery. If surgery is selected, total thyroidectomy is the procedure of choice. Patients with hyperthyroidism frequently have an enlarged thyroid gland, occasionally with a pyramidal lobe. Aim. We point the usefulness of thyroid scintigraphy, which provides valuable information regarding the thyroid anatomy. Description of the case. The manuscript presents a case report of 43-year-old woman with unstable Grave’s disease, who underwent thyroidectomy and developed persistent hyperthyroidism postoperatively. She was referred by an endocrinologist to a nuclear medicine outpatient clinic for RAI therapy. I-iodide scintigraphy revealed two foci with excessive tracer accumulation. One of the foci in the middle of the neck corresponded to the pyramidal lobe. Conclusion. The thyroid anatomy anomalies can lead to unnecessary implications for treatment. Identifying the pyramidal lobe preoperatively and removing it from patients requiring total thyroidectomy may decrease the recurrence rate of hyperthyroidism. Thyroid scintigraphy is a useful diagnostic tool to visualize the pyramidal lobe.

Thyroid Orbitopathy is manifestation of Grave’s Disease that affects eyes and orbital area. It occurs in the active and inactive phase, during which different signs are presented. When Thyroid Orbitopathy reaches its advanced phase it should be operated, to avoid complications like proptosis or optic nerve neuropathy. Usually, the first choice is orbital fat decompression. However, it is often not enough and bony decompression is necessary. Surgery of the strabismus is also crucial for patient’s quality of life. Its aim is to restore visual field as wide as it is possible. Last step in surgical interventions is eyelid correction to prevent keratopathy and improve esthetic aspects.

The article describes a series of finds of Parthian military items in the graves and crypts of Vestemin in northern Iran. These findings are especially significant as they provide an array of discoveries of military equipment: swords, daggers, spearheads, arrowheads, armor and a possible helmet. This study obliges a revision of Winkelman’s observation that “few finds of weapons have been made inside Iran” with respect to Parthian military equipment. In an overall sense, these findings may prove to be as significant to the domain of Parthian military studies as the well-known site of Dura Europos. The excavations have also discovered a coin of Philip the Arab or his son from the earlySasanian era which has assisted the authors’ dating of the Vestemin site. The site of Vestemin is not exclusively a burial venue as the site also has defense works as well as a fortress dated the later Parthian era c. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE).

The article discusses the issue regarding the reconstruction of social structure of the early Scythian populations from the forest-steppe area of the Dnieper river, in the period between the second half of 6th–4th/3rd century BC, on the basis of funeral materials. As a result of the analysis of the most important elements of burial rites implemented by the discussed population groups, and based on records of ancient authors (The Histories by Herodotus), it has been established that the most valuable sources are the size and complexity of the funerary structure and covering embankment as well as quantitative and qualitative diversity of included inventory. The classification developed on the basis of 198 burials, by means of statistical inference methods, has led to the separation of several classes of graves that can be combined with different social strata. These layers included nomadic higher spheres (leaders of local communities, leaders of “military teams” and tribal aristocracy) and elites of local settled tribes, average members of the population divided into its wealthy representatives and the so-called “simple Scythians” and lower layers of (“the poor”) and people with limited rights (domestic slaves?).

The aim was to enable comparison with the excavated burials at el-Zuma, a nearby tumuli field explored by the Early Makuria Research Project in recent years. Special attention was paid to metal artifacts from the tombs (studied in the appendix), which contribute to a better understanding of the local social and cultural traditions. The focus of the Early Makuria Research Project on examining the mortuary customs at el-Detti has helped to identify the burial practices of Early Makurian society and to trace the spread of Early Makurian society over time.

The purpose of this work is to create a comprehensive summary of arms originating from Celtic warrior graves in Poland. The largest number of artefacts comes from La Tene culture cemeteries from Lower Silesia, in Sobocisko and Głownin. Individual warrior graves came from Podgaj, Smolec and Wiązow. Other examples of weaponry were found in the Kietrz cemetery in Upper Silesia, with Lesser Poland warrior graves from Iwanowice, Aleksandrowice, and Krakow-Witkowice. From Lesser Poland we also know of alleged graves from Krakow-Pleszow and Krakow-Wyciąże. Some comments about the non-burial find of a Celtic sword from Rzeszow will also be given. A fresh consideration of the source material has corrected the earlier interpretation and reinterpreted some aspects. A new detailed chronology will also be proposed. It will also present a very broad area of connections of Celts residing in Poland.
