Opis:
The purpose of this research is to utilize Gracilaria sp. Seaweed in making nori and knowing the effect of the drying process on the level of preference of panelists on nori products. This research was conducted at the Fisheries Technology Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences and Food Chemistry Laboratory Processing, Food Processing Technology Department, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Bogor Agricultural University in January 2019. The research method used was the experimental method, with 20 semi-trained panelists and three treatments using oven drying, direct sunlight, and sunlight with modification of plastic housing. The test observed in the research is the hedonic test with characteristic organoleptic parameters including appearance, aroma, texture, taste and nori state. In addition, physical and chemical tests were carried out on the best treatment. Chemical tests covered both protein content and water content. Physical tests are hardness and thickness tests. The results of the research show that all the drying treatments on the nori are still favored by the panelists, but the drying treatment using an oven is preferred by the panelists as evidenced by the average value of the appearance characteristics of 6.40; aroma 6.30; 5.90 texture and taste 6.50. The chemical characteristics were as follows: water content 16.85%, the protein content 11.88%, fiber content 5.8%, and the physical characteristics related to hardness of 150 gf, with nori thickness of 0.25 mm.

Opis:
Vegetative plants of certain seaweeds were collected from the natural habitat of Kilakarai and Mandapam coast were subjected to SEM-energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis and quantified the following minerals viz., Na, Mg, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Mn, P, Fe, Zn and Cr during summer, pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons in 2007-2008. The order of preferential accumulation of elemental composition during summer 2007 in Sargassum wightii: Ca > Mg > Na > S > Fe > Si > Cl > K > Mn; Stoechospermum marginatum: Ca > Si > S > Mg > Mn > P > Na; Gracilaria corticata: Ca > Mg > Na > Si > Cl > S > Mn > K > Fe > P; Gracilaria verrucosa: Ca > Cl > Si > Mg > Na > P > S > Mn > Fe > K and Grateloupia filicinia: Ca > Cl > P > Si > Na > Cr > K. Seasonal distribution of elemental composition in the seaweeds showed that most of the minerals were high during the summer followed post-monsoon and monsoon seasons. This could perhaps be due to an ambient concentration of these minerals was high during these seasons thereby facilitating their uptake by seaweeds.

Opis:
Gracilaria sp. is well known as one kind of species of red algae. The major component of polysaccharide in this alga is agar that mostly used for making thin film. In this study, the Gracilaria sp.-based thin film had been prepared using two plasticizers (glycerol and sorbitol, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt %), and chitosan (1, 2, and 3 wt %). The FT-IR analysis confirmed the interaction that happened among the component of the mixture of Gracilaria sp., plasticizers, and chitosan was based on hydrogen bonding due to the presence of -OH and -NH2 groups. The plasticizers and chitosan concentration have significant role to the mechanical properties of Gracilaria sp.-based thin film. The optimum concentration of plasticizers and chitosan based on mechanical testing result was found at 0.2 and 3.0 wt %, respectively. At those concentrations, the thin film that prepared with sorbitol showed the highest mechanical properties. Other characterizations, i.e. TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), and WVP (Water Vapor Permeability) also brought the same result. The antimicrobial properties of the as prepared thin film in the presence of chitosan on agar medium and as a packaging on selected bread showed the Gracilaria sp.-based thin films was able to inhibit the growth of microbes. This antimicrobial activity can be used to declare the potential of Gracilaria sp.-based thin film as a new active food packaging.
Gracilaria sp. to dobrze znany gatunek krasnorostów. Najlepsze właściwości mechaniczne uzyskano z zastosowaniem 0,2% mas plastyfikatora i 3% mas. chitozanu. Badania metodami analizy termograwimetrycznej, skaningowej mikroskopii elektronowej i oznaczona wartość przepuszczalności pary wodnej (WVP) potwierdziły te ustalenia. Wykazano, że otrzymane folie hamowały rozwój drobnoustrojów, mogą więc być stosowane jako nowe aktywne opakowania do żywności.

Opis:
In this research, the batch removal of Pb2+ ions from wastewater and aqueous solution with the use o two different modified algae Gracilaria corticata (red algae) and Sargassum glaucescens (brown algae) was examined. The experiment was performed in a batch system and the effect of the pH solution; initial concentration and contact time on biosorption by both biomasses were investigated and compared. When we used S. glaucescens as a biosorbent, the optima conditions of pH, Pb2+ concentration and equilibrium time were at 5, 200 mg/L and 70 min, in the range of 95.6% removal. When G. corticata was used for this process, pH 3, 15 mg/L pb2+ concentration and 50 min contact time, resulted in the maximum removal (86.4%). The equilibrium adsorption data are fitted to the Frundlich and Langmuir isotherm model, by S. glaucescens and G. corticata, respectively. The pb2+ uptake by both biosorbent was best described by the second-order rate model.
