Opis:
In Stefan Grabiński’s works, the artist often uses metaphors to attribute anthropomorphic phenomena to non-human ones. This sketch is an attempt to look at examples of anthropomorphic metaphors in Stefan Grabiński`s novellas in terms of their ideological and artistic functions. The aim of this analysis is to verify whether the use of anthropomorphic metaphors is connected with attributing created worlds with non-realistic properties. For this purpose, it is worth interpreting and explaining the treatments used by the author, including their linguistic aspect, asking the question about the relation between the employed stylistic means and the effect of the created image of reality, and about the consequences of this way of constructing the world presented in Grabiński’s works.

Można powiedzieć, że ułożony przez Grabińskiego program literacki metafantastyki to wypadkowa cech poetyki utworów Poego zwanych short stories. Z tego powodu autorka artykułu zestawiła ze sobą utwory obu pisarzy. Wybrane nowele – William Wilson Poego i Zez Grabińskiego – są reprezentacyjne dla fantastyki psychologicznej i dotykają problemu zaburzonej osobowości człowieka. Narracja prowadzona jest w sposób sprawozdawczy, a opisane wydarzenia mają z pozoru charakter realistyczny. Wspólny mianownik stanowi także motyw przewodni – sobowtór – który zajmie w tym opracowaniu szczególne miejsce.
It could be said that Grabinski’s literary theory program of meta-fiction is the result of the characteristics of Poe's short stories. For this reason I decided to correlate the works of both writers. I selected two short stories which concern the problem of disordered personality – William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe and Zez by Stefan Grabinski. I found them typical of the psychological fiction. Both of them have reporting narration and the plots are seemingly realistic. Another common feature is a doppelganger leitmotif, which has a special place in this paper.

The article is a comparative reading and analysis of selected works by two eminent authors of weird fiction, Stefan Grabiński and Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the goal of which is to trace two (independent) trajectories of development of ideas concerning “weird” story writing, as established, in pre-modern context, by Edgar Allan Poe. The two authors appear to suffer from a combination of tragically inherent inability to write “like” Poe, with a haunting desireto do so. Exhibiting understanding of the Poesque discourse, they are driven to invent strategies to cope with the resulting textual neuroses-a way out of the discursive “maze” of Poe’s craft, a way that is always already shut.Where Lovecraft’s “mechanistic materialism” finds its expression in an indifferent cosmos, populated by alien beings, whose influence seems to be inscribed in the fabric of his textual realities, Grabiński’s sense of “amazement” is deployed internally, with psychological constructs overshadowing the “objective” reality. Both discourses, however, spring from one tradition of horror, and from the unexorcised trace of Poe’s spectre. The two authors’ ambivalent relation with modern sensibilities results in a series of obsessive investigationsinto the ideological underpinnings of art, philosophy and science.

Through an analysis of several short stories by Stefan Grabiński, the article aims to show that his narrative is based on the principle of a metaphorical mirror, which exposes the dual nature of the world: matter and spirit, good and evil, world and afterworld, inner reality and outer reality. The reflected image of the world does not coincide with the real one. That image in the mirror is beyond human reason and appears as a terrifying truth and as the profound chaos of the soul. Grabiński develops the doubling of reality, which is present – with different meanings – not only in philosophical, religious, psychological and psychoanalytic thought, but also in the field of the paranormal and of parapsychology, through the theme of the double.

Stefan Grabiński, a famous Polish author of weird fiction, who is known especially for his collection of short stories Demon ruchu (The Motion Demon, 1919), lived and worked in a period marked by a new artistic style – expressionism. Although Grabiński came from Lviv, often regarded as a province in Poland after the Great War, he could have a contact with the latest ideas concerning art and philosophy. Indeed, both in his short stories and in his novels may be found some traits typical for the expressionist poetics as, for example, a subjective perspective, a color sensitivity or a tendency to violent and dynamic use of formal elements. Grabiński was fascinated by a German literature – he read Gustav Meyrink, E.T.A. Hoffmann and an expressionist magazine “Der Orchideengarten”. Moreover, he liked going to the cinema where he could watch, for example, a famous German expressionist film – The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The only text by Grabiński which was adapted into film in his life was a short story Kochanka Szamoty  (Szamota’s Mistress, 1922). Although this seemed to be a great material for an expressionist film, the director – Leon Trystan – decided to realize it in an impressionist poetics.

The article treats about a forgotten play Zaduszki (All Souls’ Day) by Stefan Grabiński, widely known as the author of fantastic literature and horror stories. The play Zaduszki consists of three parts: 1. Strzygoń. Klechda zaduszna; 2. W dzień zaduszny; 3. Sen Krysty. Misterium zaduszne. First of them is written in folk dialect. The second one, sometimes named „the longest one-act play ever staged in Polish theatre”, considers a problem of a fault and a punishment. The third one, similarly to the first one, presents folk beliefs in supernatural phenomena which take place on All Souls’ Day. Moreover, it partly resembles a mystery play. Although the trilogy got an unfavourable reception (it was shown only seven times in Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków), it may be considered as an ambitious attempt to match the heritage of Stanisław Wyspiański – according to Grabiński, the greatest authority in the field of theatre.

How does the contemporary Polish weird fiction scare us?The text concerns different strategies of constructing weird fiction by contemporary Polish writers. In two anthologies published in 2013, authors of weird novels reinterpret the classic paradigm of weird fiction (associated with Lovecraft) as well as try to refer it to the present reality. Polish writers, inspired mainly by Stefan Grabiński’s work, use his best known motives, such as weird trains and desolate stations. The second source of inspiration is Poe’s dead subject (from The Facts in the Case of M. Waldemar), who acts as a living one and generates the horror. These inspirations, however, do not help contemporary writers with creating a new paradigm of weird fiction but rather close them in the circle of constant inspirations and dependence on their predecessors.

W niniejszym tekście autor stara się zrealizować dwa postawione sobie cele: po pierwsze, możliwie wyczerpująco zinterpretować nowelę Stefana Grabińskiego pt. W domu Sary, klasycznie analizując wszystkie występujące w niej motywy tak, by do zebranych wniosków innych interpretatorów dołożyć także swoje koncepcje. Stanowić ma to wszystko tło – punkt wyjścia – do realizacji celu drugiego: próby psychoanalitycznej interpretacji fabuły utworu, a w szczególności postaci tytułowej Sary. Zestawia wreszcie poczynioną w duchu Lacana psychoanalizę z faktami z biografii autora, by ocenić słuszność wysnutych przez siebie wniosków.
In this article author attempts to realise two chosen by him objectives: firstly, to interpret a short story by Stefan Grabiński, W domu Sary, as comprehensively as it is possible, conventionally analising all performing there themes, so he will be able to add his concepts to gathered conclusions of other interpretators. It is a background – starting point – for realising second goal: try of psychoanalysis interpretation of the plot, and especially the title figure, Sara. Eventually, he balances psychoanalysis made in spirit of Lacan with facts from biography of writer, to measure validity of drawn conclusions.

Przedmiotem rozważań autorki artykułu jest ukształtowanie się pojęcia „design skandynawski” i jego wpływ na wzornictwo polskie od późnych lat 50. XX wieku po czasy współczesne. We wstępnej części tekstu poddano analizie działalność firmy Finmar, prowadzonej po wojnie przez Paula Stemanna, która przyczyniła się do wypromowania określenia „design skandynawski”, popularyzując wyroby krajów nordyckich na rynkach Europy Zachodniej oraz w Stanach Zjednoczonych. W kolejnej części tekstu przedstawiono rozwój współpracy szwedzkiej firmy IKEA z producentami i projektantami polskimi, uznając działania Ingvara Kamprada za ważny element w zakresie rozpowszechnienia w Polsce skandynawskiej stylistyki meblarstwa. Jako współczesną kontynuację mody na skandynawski minimalizm w meblarstwie polskim zaprezentowano działania dwojga projektantów: Jadwigi Husarskiej-Sobiny oraz Tomasza Rygalika, którzy realizowali swoje projekty we współpracy z firmą Paged Meble SA, dysponującą obecnie zasobami dawnej Fabryki Mebli Giętych w Jasienicy.
The subject of the author’s considerations is the formation of the term “Scandinavian design” and its influence on Polish design from the late 1950s to the present day. The introductory part analyzes the activity of the Finmar company, which after the war was run by Paul Stemann and contributed to the promotion of the term “Scandinavian design” by popularizing the products of the Nordic countries on the markets of Western Europe and the United States. The next part of the text presents the development of cooperation of the Swedish company IKEA with Polish producers and designers, recognizing the activities of Ingvar Kamprad as an important element in the dissemination of Scandinavian furniture style in Poland. As a contemporary continuation of the Scandinavian minimalism in Polish furniture, the activities of two designers were presented: Jadwiga Husarska-Sobina and Tomasz Rygalik, who implemented their projects in cooperation with Paged Meble SA, which currently has the resources of the former Bent Furniture Factory in Jasienica.

In his short prose, Stefan Grabiński often referred to issues connected with fields related to literature in order to deepen the psychological portrait of the characters he created. In the novellas I selected, the author refers to philosophy (including Bergson’s theories) and psychoanalysis, which allows him to create credible and true-tolife figures whom he, at the same time, places in worlds that are plastic enough to become the arena of uncanny stories. Both The Realm and Grot, the Engine-Driver seem to be evidence of Grabiński’s prosaic genius, which he could demonstrate to the full in his novellas. Therefore, the article that I present is a peculiar reconnaissance, aimed at emphasising the virtuosity of this Polish classical writer of horror stories, and at pointing out his high competences in the field of constructing complex and true-to-life characters.
Stefan Grabiński w swoich krótkich formach prozatorskich często odwoływał się do zagadnień z dziedzin pokrewnych literaturze – w celu pogłębienia portretu psychologicznego bohaterów przez niego kreowanych. W wybranych przeze mnie nowelach autor odwołuje się do filozofii (w tym do teorii Bergsona) czy psychoanalizy, dzięki czemu może tworzyć bohaterów wiarygodnych, których jednocześnie osadza w światach wystarczająco plastycznych, by mogły stać się areną rozgrywania opowieści niesamowitych. Zarówno Dziedzina, jak i Maszynista Grot wydają się być świadectwem prozatorskiego geniuszu Grabińskiego, który najpełniej realizował się właśnie w nowelach. Zaprezentowany przeze mnie artykuł jest zatem swoistym rekonesansem mającym na celu uwydatnienie kunsztu pisarskiego polskiego klasyka grozy oraz zwrócenie uwagi na świadectwa jego wysokich kompetencji w dziedzinie konstruowania wiarygodnych i złożonych sylwetek bohaterów.

The subject of the article is a pioneering in Poland critical conception of the fantastic developed by highly esteemed prewar author of the fantastic literature, Stefan Grabiński. The crucial, remarkable comments referring to fantastic literature were comprised by Grabiński in his extensive essay entitled On fantastic literature. The dissertation in question was never published in whole, however, to find its issue while his life in merely two short parts of it in press edition. In the first part of the article the archival documents were used (mainly the letters) which enabled the reconstruction of puzzling history of the manuscript of said essay now probably lost forever. In the second part, basing on the published parts of the essay, as well as other critical statements of the Polish writer, the main aspects of Grabiński’s theory were discussed. Upon the profound analyses made therefrom it appeares that Grabiński perceived and gave the fantastic genre a unique meaning and value, notably owing to its specific privileged language exposing metaphysical expression of the Mystery. The writer managed to depict in accurate, innovative and convincing way the character of fantastic literature, both in terms of historical and anthropological origin of this kind of literary creativity, and its aesthetics, social and philosophical attributes what makes these researchers innovative and even anticipativewith reference to the corresponding studies of postwar literature theoreticians of fantastic genre (e.g. L. Vax, R. Caillois, T. Todorov). Discursive statements on the issue of fantastic literature of Grabiński are further related to much wider phenomenon which was focused on developing critical analysis of fantastic literature in Poland in the first decades of the twentieth century.
