Opis:
This paper describes the results of 24 h acoustic experiment based on three-dimensional measurements of the S; distribution of herring and sprat in the southern Baltic in October 2001. The experiment was based on a continuous (24h day) integration offish echoes using an EY500 echo sounder from a vessel with a constant speed of 8 knots, moving along the sides of a square equal to 4 n.mi., localized inside the specified area. Duration of the experiment was limited by deterioration of the weather conditions but nearly 300 ESDU samples were collected. These are correlated with values of coincident environmental factors: time, depth, water temperature, salinity and oxygen levels; estimated on the basis of survey data. Fish behaviour vs environmental factors is described by different macrosounding visualizations, statistical, and mathematical models. The purpose of the paper is to compare results of the experiment to the average characteristics of fish behaviour in the same basin, based on autumn studies over the period 1995-2001. General analysis was provided for the selected area of the Polish EEZ (south Gotland Deep), characterized by the greatest depth movements of fish diel migration. The most significant differences were found between fish migration pattern and diel stability of the acoustic response between these situations, specially during the sunset period.

The article is a short summary of the author’s PhD thesis, analysing the late Viking Age cemetery of Kopparsvik on the island of Gotland, Sweden. The cemetery of Kopparsvik has to be seen in close relation to an early emporium as predecessor of present-day Visby, and its evaluation and publication will give new insights into the establishment and function of an early trading community. Furthermore, many burials at Kopparsvik show unusual features – namely, an astonishingly high number of prone burials and tooth modification, that demonstrate the consolidation of new social and religious ideologies at the threshold between the heathen Scandinavian Viking Age and the Christian European Middle Ages

This article is based on a qualitative study regarding two World Heritage Island destinations, Gotland in the Baltic Sea and Rapa Nui in the Pacific Ocean. The two islands are used as cases illustrating different views on the development of cruise tourism. By applying conjunctural analysis the authors are able to account for the broader context of cruise tourism. Different perspectives on cruise tourism are found to be embedded in both local and global contexts, which are associated with three kinds of challenges: cruise tourism is developing without the local community’s involvement in decision making, it is not aligned with the aims of local tourism and ignores local products and services. We therefore call for more involvement of the local community in the development of cruise tourism.

Agastograptus lawsoni (Holland, Rickards et Warren 1969), known previously as Holoretiolites (Balticograptus) lawsoni Holland, Rickards et Warren 1969 from upper Wenlock of Shropshire is described from Mulde Beds of Gotland. A new diagnosis of the species, basing on abundant and well preserved fossils, has been formulated. Former Retiolites balticus Eisenack is removed from the genus Agastograptus.
Zbadano około 70 dobrze zachowanych okazów retiolitidów, pochodzących z warstw Mulde (górny wenlok) Gotlandii, co umożliwiło zbadanie astogenezy i wyróżnienie cech diagnostycznych gatunku. Zdaniem autorki należy on do rodzaju Agastograptus Obut et Zaslavskaya 1983. Jednocześnie autorka proponuje wyłączyć z rodzaju Agastograptus dawny gatunek Retiolites balticus Eisenack z uwagi na występowanie pojedynczego wyrostka aperturalnego oraz brak beleczek pleuralnych i zygzakowatego wzoru klatrium ścian lateralnych.

Opis:
W regionie zachodniopomorskim i u naszych najbliższych sąsiadów, strzechy są wykonywane podobnymi metodami, mają wyrównaną formę i wygląd zewnętrzny. Jednak na skandynawskich wyspach można odnaleźć pokrycia dachowe wykonane z nietypowych materiałów. Na duńskiej Læsø, położonej w cieśninie Kattegat, na strzechy wykorzystywano trawę morską – wodorostów rosnących w pobliżu brzegów wyspy. Na szwedzkich Gotlandii i Fårö dachy pokrywano bagienną kłocią wiechowatą. W obu przypadkach użycie nietypowych materiałów nadawało niewielkim obiektom zaskakujący wyraz architektoniczny, a krajobraz kulturowy wysp uzyskał indywidualny charakter.
In the Westpomeranian region, and its closest neighbours, thatches are made in a similar way – they even have similar form and appearance. However, in the Scandinavian islands roof covers are constructed from unusual materials. On the Danish island of Læsø located in the Kattegat Strait, thatches are made from seagrass – seaweed that grows near the island coast. On the Swedish islands Gotland and Fårö, roofs are covered by marsh sawtooth sedge. In both of these cases, using these unusual materials gives small buildings surprising architectural expression and the cultural landscape of the islands develop an individual character.

Opis:
In order to study recent sedimentation rates in the Eastern Gotland Basin, 52 short sediment cores collected from the deepest part (<150 m)of the Basin in 2003 were investigated. The upper parts of all the cores were distinctly laminated and dark in colour, followed by a homogeneous, greyish lower part. The thickness of the laminated sequences varied from 17 to 300 mm. 210Pb dating analyses of selected cores revealed that the change from non-laminated to laminated sediments happened about 100 years ago, indicating a shift from predominantly oxic bottom water conditions to anoxic conditions. Used as a time marker, this shift in the sediment texture enabled sediment accumulation rates to be estimated for all sediment cores. The observed mean linear sedimentation rate for the whole basin was 0.93 ± 0.67 mm yr−1. The respective bulk sediment accumulation rates ranged from 10.5 to 527 g m−2 yr−1 with an average of 129 ± 112 g m−2 yr−1, indicating a high spatial variability of sedimentation rates within the basin. This agrees very well with the long-term sedimentation pattern since the Litorina transgression. The observed pattern clearly reflects the hydrographic conditions at the seafloor as studied by modelled near-bottom current velocities.

Opis:
In order to describe the role of sedimentary processes for the phosphorus (P) cycle in the open Baltic Proper, P deposition and reflux were quantified for the predominately anoxic sediments of the Eastern Gotland Basin. The study is based on investigations of 53 surface sediment samples and pore water samples from 8 sediment cores. The average P deposition rate was estimated at 0.20 g±0.18 g m−2 yr−1, the fluctuation being due to variable bulk sediment deposition rates. P refluxes were estimated by applying Fick’s First Law of Diffusion. A fairly good positive correlation between sedimentary P deposition and P release was obtained. P release from sediments by diffusion exceeds net P deposition by a factor of 2. This suggests that 2/3 of the deposited gross P is recycled in the sediments and released back into the water column; only 1/3 remains in the sediment permanently. A budget calculation demonstrates that the released dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) accounts for the observed increase in DIP concentrations in the deep water during periods of stagnation, which is noticeable even at the surface P concentrations. Under such conditions and with the present remediation conditions it is not possible to freely manage P concentrations in the water column on short time scales.

Opis:
Water exchange between the deep basins of the Baltic Sea during stagnation periods ventilates the bottom layer. Such exchange may be local and associated with the seabed topography features. The aim of this study is to investigate the possible pathway of water exchange within the Gdansk-Gotland ´ Sill. A comprehensive study was conducted near the one of the local erosional trenches (depressions), comprising bathymetric survey using multibeam echosounder, water column CTD-sounding, tilt current meters mooring, and sampling of seabed deposits and macrozoobenthos. The absence of pelitic sediments even in the natural trench depressions was identified. The seabed is composed of dense clays with surface erosion signs. The presence of a current towards the Gotland Basin was recorded in the bottom layer of the erosional trench. This layer was characterized by increased salinity and dissolved oxygen concentration. The trench was also an area with macrozoobenthos richer in species composition and biomass. Moreover, indicator species of the North Sea waters were found exclusively within the erosional trench. Macrozoobenthic community structure and the age of benthic organisms confirm the existence of permanent water exchange directly from the Słupsk Furrow through the erosional trench, and indicate one of the advective pathways of water exchange between the deep Baltic Sea basins.

Six well exposed mid−Ludlow stromatoporoid−dominated reef biostromes in four localities from the Hemse Group in southeastern Gotland, Sweden comprise a stromatoporoid assemblage dominated by four species; Clathrodictyon mohicanum, “Stromatopora” bekkeri, Plectostroma scaniense, and Lophiostroma schmidtii. All biostromes investigated in this area (of approximately 30 km²) are interpreted to belong to a single faunal assemblage forming a dense accumulation of fossils that is probably the best exposed stromatoporoid−rich deposit of the Silurian. The results from this comprehensive study strengthen earlier interpretations of a combination of genetic and environmental control on growth−forms of the stromatoporoids. Growth styles are similar for stromatoporoids in all six biostromes. Differences in biostrome fabric are due to variations in the degree of disturbance by storms. The uniformity of facies and the widespread low−diversity fauna support the view that palaeoenvironmental conditions were similar across the area where these biostromes crop out, and promoted the extraordinary growth of stromatoporoids in this shallow shelf area.

The exceptional warm water inflow into the Baltic Sea in summer 2002, which preceded the major Baltic inflow of January 2003, was surprisingly repeated in modified form in summer 2003. Its warm waters even replaced the renewed, cold inflow waters in the eastern Gotland Basin and commenced another warm period in its deep layers, where the previous one had lasted from 1997 to 2003. Details of the temporal and spatial behaviour of this new baroclinic inflow are presented from various measurements carried out from the Kiel Bight up to Gotland, covering the Darss Sill, the Arkona, Bornholm, Gdańsk Basins and the Słupsk Channel, focused mainly on the time period between July 2003 and July 2004. Hypothetically, the repetition of these exceptional warm inflow events could be regarded as a possible regional indicator for global climatic change.

Opis:
Hydrographic and current measurements are analysed for stagnant deep-water conditions over the south-eastern topographic flank of the Eastern Gotland Basin (EGB) in April 2000. Results suggest a prevailing barotropic motion mode on a synoptic scale of several days. Deep along-slope volume transports derived from subsurface current meter moorings are compared with those of the baroclinic fraction of geostrophic motions crossing the plane of a hydrographic section. This was aligned perpendicular to deep isobaths and was repeated 40 times with a time step of six hours. Changes in regional winds produced a quasi-ten day cycle in the filling level of the Baltic Proper. Associated wave-like fluctuations of the mass field propagated cyclonically with a velocity of about 0.04 m s−1 around the deep basin’s rim. It is concluded that associated changes in deep volume transports result mainly from barotropically governed advection processes and that those of the baroclinic component of geostrophic currents provide a qualitatively and quantitatively quite inaccurate description of related transport fluctuations on a daily scale.
