The aim of the article is presentation the problems of possible intellect and agent intellect in philosophy Mieczyslaw Gogacz, founder of consequent version of thomism (Warsaw School of Thomism). His understanding of the intellect was dictated by the successive publications. Difference between intellects, was first shown in the context of fundamental metaphysical positions - realism and idealism. According to M. Gogacz realistic proposition is depends on the distinction between two intellects, and idealistic related with the acceptance of a single intellect with passive and active function, and identification of the faculties of the soul with itself. M. Gogacz presented the metaphysical description of the nature of the intellect, emphasizing its being, as well as the very essence. He underlined that the possible intellect should be defined as the possibility of the soul, which is it imperfection (intellect is principle of individuation of the soul), located in the soul, but not identical with its essence. Agent intellect in his opinion should be defined as an accident of the possible intellect. Distinction between possible intellect and agent intellect allowed to remark the difference between knowing confused and clearly, and to build the theory of “speech of the heart”, which describes the most important way of knowing a principle of being – act of being.

The title indicates the position of pedagogy from the view of philosophy of being and corresponding philosophical anthroplogy. The division between general and particular pedagogy results from the reference to the truth about man and the culture showing pedagogy as a set of relations between teacher (teacher) and the student. The basic principle, and also the task of education is the wisdom of the merging truth and goodness. From the principle the faith and patience follow. Faith is the contribution of the intellect in education, and patience is the improvement of the will. The principles of particular pedagogy follow from these three principles. In the area of faith relied on truth there are a humility and obedience, and in the area of patience relief on god there are mortification and poverty. These terms are explained in the article, because in the common usage they are misunderstood. Obedience and poverty which are mentioned at the end of the article are a measure of the degree of education. These principles of pedagogy are the result of the research work of Professor Mieczyslaw Gogacz and his disciples. They constitute a proposal to build the pedagogy concerning a man.

Artykuł omawia filozofię poezji Mieczysław Gogacza. W pierwszej części przedstawiono główne tezy filozofii poezji Mieczysława Gogacza. Ich podstawą są jego koncepcje metafizyczne. W części drugiej porównano filozofię poezji Gogacza z koncepcjami poezji filozofa Jacquesa Maritaina oraz literaturoznawcy Michaela Edwardsa. Wedle Gogacza podstawą twórczości poetyckiej jest sytuacja poetycka. Poeta to osoba obdarzona wrażliwością poetycką. Wrażliwość poetycka to zdolność dostrzegania sytuacji poetyckich. Sytuacja poetycka istnieje niezależnie od psychiki poety. Poeta używa słów i metafor, aby opisać poetycką sytuację, jaką napotyka w swoim życiu. Specyfiką sytuacji poetyckiej jest jednoczesny integralny odbiór relacji realnych i relacji pomyślanych.
The article concerns the philosophy of poetry by Mieczysław Gogacz. The first part presents the basic theses of the philosophy of poetry by Mieczysław Gogacz. The theses are based on Gogacz’s metaphysical concepts. The second part compares Gogacz`s philosophy of poetry with the concepts of the poetry by Jacques Maritain and the literary scholar Michael Edwards. According to Gogacz, poetic situation is the the basis of poetry . A poet is a person endowed with poetic sensitivity. Poetic sensitivity is the ability to perceive poetic situations. The poetic situation exists regardless of the poet’s psyche. The poet uses words and metaphors to describe the poetic situation he encounters in his life. The specificity of the poetic situation is the simultaneous integral perception of real and thought relations.

The key postulate of Mieczysław Gogacz’s ethics of protecting persons is to develop an attitude that always stands on the side of persons and defends the persons. In order to be able to implement this postulate, Gogacz points out that it is necessary to recognize in advance who a person (i.e. the subject of ethics) is. In his account, ethics of protecting persons is an ethical proposition built on metaphysics, on certain metaphysical assumptions. The ethics itself is constituted by norms understood as criteria for selecting actions that protect persons. He indicated three the most important criteria for moral conduct: wisdom, conscience and contemplation. Firstly, human wisdom as the basic criterion of good conduct. Wisdom helps to recognize the ultimate good and enables people to choose the right courses of actions. Secondly, a righteous conscience is another criterion for moral conduct. Gogacz point out that moral conduct requires a regular human reflection, consideration of what is to be done. Thus, thirdly, a contemplation is the last criterion for moral conduct. In this paper, I will attempt to reconstruct this proposal and point its most important theses, concepts and postulates. The course of the argument will correspond to the order of discussing ethical problems in Gogacz's book. The first part of this article begins with a brief discussion on methodological issues: we will explain what ethics is, what are the reasons for the dependence of ethics on anthropology, and then we will recall Gogacz's thesis that ethical research must be preceded by research in metaphysics of a human being. Then, we will present the most important theses of the ethics of protecting persons. Precisely, we will focus on personal relationships. Three rules of ethics will also be formulated. The second part (Anthropological problems) deals with some detailed problems on metaphysics of a human being (i.e. body, soul, conception, birth, death, suffering, etc.) in order to be able to take a closer look at the detailed propositions of ethical problems in the next last part (Ethical problems).
Sama etyka to normy rozumiane jako kryteria doboru działań chroniących osoby. Gogacz przekonuje, że etyka realistyczna poszukuje tych kryteriów - za Arystotelesem i św. Tomaszem - w człowieku. Rezultatem tych poszukiwań jest wskazanie trzech najważniejszych kryteriów postępowania moralnego: mądrości, sumienia i kontemplacji. Po pierwsze, ludzka mądrość jako podstawowe kryterium dobrego postępowania. Mądrość pomaga rozpoznać najwyższe dobro i umożliwia ludziom wybór właściwego kierunku działania. Po drugie, prawidłowo ukształtowane sumienie jest kolejnym kryterium moralnego postępowania. Gogacz zwraca uwagę, że moralne postępowanie wymaga regularnej ludzkiej refleksji, przemyślenia tego, co należy zrobić. A zatem, po trzecie, kontemplacja jest ostatnim kryterium moralnego postępowania. Rozważania te otwierają najważniejszą książkę Mieczysława Gogacza, w której przedstawił on swoją oryginalną propozycję teorii etycznej, tj. Wprowadzenie do etyki chronienia osób. W niniejszym artykule spróbuję zrekonstruować tę propozycję i wskazać jej najważniejsze tezy, koncepcje i postulaty. Przebieg wywodu będzie zgodny z kolejnością omawiania problemów etycznych w tej książce. Część pierwsza tego artykułu rozpoczyna się krótkim omówieniem zagadnień metodologicznym: wyjaśnimy czym jest etyka, jakie racje stoją za uzależnieniem etyki od antropologii, by następnie przywołać tezę Gogacza, że badania etyczne muszą być poprzedzone badaniami z zakresu metafizyki człowieka. Następnie w części pierwszej przedstawimy najważniejsze tezy etyki chronienia osób. Skupimy się na relacjach osobowych. Zostaną również sformułowane trzy zasady etyki. Druga część (Anthropological problems) dotyczy uszczegółowienia zagadnień z filozofii człowieka, aby móc w kolejnej ostatniej części (Ethical problems) przyjrzeć się bliżej szczegółowym propozycjom problemów etycznych.

Since education, including university courses, has been transfered to online system we have faced the entirely new unprecedented challenge. It is true that computer and the internet based technology has been widely adopted for academic purposes. There have been courses online offered long before the lockdown and there have been conferences held via internet enabling wide audience to communicate freely. Nowadays, however, since pandemic restriction have been introduced, only full online classes allow to conduct academic work. We suffer because we, teachers and students, are experiencing difficulties in pursuing academic tasks. After a few months we come to the conclusion that online education and traditional forms of teaching cannot be equated. This paper attempts to identify the main issues which accompany the process, such as the absence of social life or depravity of personal relations. In analysis from a philosophical point of view, of philosophy of education of professor Mieczysław Gogacz, we ask what is the essence of the system called online teaching and to what extend it modifies personal dimension and relations proper to the process of educating. We gather both, positive and negative aspects, and show that numerous disturbing consequences of the online method in a longer perspective may render education ineffective. We conclude that it has already been observed that remote system has plunged learning and academic life. Hence, in we suggest we suggest that classical school of teaching, especially in the field of philosophy, should be maintained as incomparably reliable and comprehensive.

Mieczysław Gogacz dąży do uprawiania filozofii maksymalnie realistycznej. Wartości uważa za wytwory umysłu, a nie realne byty. Stąd nie zajmuje się nimi w swojej filozofii. Twierdzi, że budowanie etyki i pedagogiki w oparciu o wartości prowadzi do koncepcji idealistycznych, stawiania wymagań niemożliwych do spełnienia. W artykule argumentuje się, że wartości odgrywają ważną rolę w życiu człowieka. Wewnętrzny świat człowieka jest światem zorientowanym na wartości. Również miłość jest zjawiskiem ściśle związanym z wartościami. Jest ona odpowiedzią na wartości. Hierarchia wartości, którą kierują się osoby, jest wspólnym horyzontem, w którym rodzi się ich miłość.
Mieczysław Gogacz pursues a maximally realistic philosophy. He considers values to be products of the mind, not real beings. Hence, he does not work on them in his philosophy. He claims that building pedagogy based on values leads to idealistic conceptions, imposing requirements which are impossible to fulfil. The article argues that values play a major role in human life. The inner world of a human being is a value-oriented world. Love is also a phenomenon closely related to values. It is a response to values. The hierarchy of values that people follow is a common horizon in which their love is born.

The aim of the article is the comparison of the conception of relation between the attitude to self and sense of happiness in humanistic ethics of Erich Fromm and Mieczyslaw Gogacz. The text indicates differences occurring between them, as well as similarities, however the latter ones seem to be particularly interesting, as the conceptions of mentioned philosophers derive from totally different philosophical traditions. Analyses of Fromm and Gogacz show that attitude of human being to themselves significantly influences not only their sense of happiness, but also their way of life and relation with other people.

The most original theory in anthropology and ethics of a founder of consequential Thomism – Mieczysław Gogacz – is a theory of personal existential relations. He distinguishes three personal existential relations: love, faith and hope, that while being shaped and developed in shaping and developing in person circle become a source of their humanism and metanoia. On foundation of these relations a family as a union of people related with personal relations is constituting. Personal relations are family home, that protects its members from negative influence of culture, which not always protects people. In the face of contemporary challenges of family, it seems that Mieczysła Gogacz’s proposal is a remedy for many problems, which family has to deal with.

This paper addresses the topic of upbringing and education of youth in the high school. It shows what conditions enable and at the same time are indispensable when we refine and improve the conduct of young people. According to Mieczysław Gogacz there are following that can enable a proper upbringing and education of man: kindness, openness, common dealing with burdens, motivation, joy when there is an effort, encouraging to perseverance, goodness and truth. Upringing and education are presented as a process, a complex process in which both, taught and teaching person, are involved. In the result of this process both parts mutually offer and receive something. It is a personal relation, twofold, complex and based on faith, hope and love. Young man is treated not as a subject but a subject of education. Not a number in a registry but a person who is entitled to proper treatment, respect, recognition and kindness. These are not goals which are priorities of upbringing and education but results, not methods and forms but intellectual and moral development of young people. The proper conduct of man depends significantly on propitious conditions, on the environment, both school and family, and on correlation, cooperation between school and home, teachers, pupils and parents.

The title issue of the article is the problem of the philosophical sources Thomas in his works. The author believes that the source of Thomas’ philosophy is Aristotle. Argumentuje swoje stanowisko w następujący sposób: a) Tomasz napisał 11 komentarzy do filozoficznych dzieł Arystotelesa, b) nazywał go Filozofem, c) systematycznie odwołuje się do Arystotelesa, nawet w swych pismach teologicznych, d) nauczanie perypatetyzmu dominuje w filozofii tomistycznej.

In the paper I show the reasons for which the Aristotelian principle vivere viventibus est esse is relevant for the understanding of actual existence; there are three sorts of these reasons: (i) some metaphilosophical reasons which I offer in p. 2; (ii) the possibility of illustrating some key metaphysical theses (which I list in p. 3) concerning actual existence on the example of life; (iii) a connection between ignoring actual existence and some way of treating life (that I show on the example of Francis Suarez and John Punch). In the course of the argument I distinguish between three senses of the predicate ‘is alive’ and the concept of life (the accidental, the essential and the actual one) and I focus on some key differences between the ways the concept of life is introduced in Aquinas and in Suarez and Punch.

The aim of this article is to present the perspectives for a comparative analysis of the philosophical views of two renowned Polish representatives of existential Thomism. The authors mentioned above are known as the main representatives of the most important Polish Thomistic schools: Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec is the most important representative of the Lublin School of Classical Philosophy, while Mieczysław Gogacz is the founder of the Warsaw School of Consequential Thomism. At the base of this article, meant as an introduction to more advanced analyses, lies the conviction that mutual isolation between philosophical schools is harmful. It shows the necessity of a reciprocal confrontation of research results. In this paper, following a short historical introduction, the Author first presents the main areas in the thought of the two philosophers, which – due to differences in the concepts they employ – are most in need of thorough comparative research. Afterwards, the Author points out the most important achievements of both philosophers and makes an outline of the main difficulties and aporias connected with their ideas. Finally, an outline of further research is presented, which could help to overcome the aporias demonstrated here.

Mieczysław Gogacz, the founder of consequent Thomism, is also known for his original concept of mystical experience. In his opinion, mystical experience is a passive experience of the existence of God by the mean of potential intellect of a man. In this account, mystical experience is a relationship that connects two beings: God and man. This means that the nature of mystical experience will depend precisely on the people who are engaged in it. It further follows that our understanding of the mystical experience will depend on the anthropology and theodicy. In order to understand Gogacz’s concept of mystical experience, the following issues in his anthropology seem to be of key importance: a. the concept of man as a person; b. the problem of manifestations of existence that constitute the basis for establishing personal relationships; c. the subject of personal relations as connections between real rational beings; d. the problem of indistinct cognition as a passive experience by the potential intellect of the principles of the cognized being (the word of the heart). The groups of issues mentioned above are also one of the most significant elements of consequent Thomism.

Profesor Mieczysław Gogacz uważa, że własności transcendentalne, przejawiające akt istnienia bytu, są podstawą jedynych realnych relacji, które byt osobowy nawiązuje z innymi bytami. Można więc powiedzieć – korzystając ze znanej formuły Leibniza – że transcendentalia są oknami i drzwiami bytu, gdy „okna” uznamy za poznawanie, a „drzwi” – za działanie. Sposobem, w jaki się to dokonuje są relacje istnieniowe, czyli takie relacje, które według Autora Elementarza metafizyki są wyznaczane przez własności transcendentalne: miłość budująca się na realności (res), wiara wyznaczana przez własność prawdy (verum) oraz nadzieja, której fundamentem jest transcendentalna własność dobra (bonum). To ujęcie ma swoje konsekwencje przede wszystkim w antropologii filozoficznej, którą Gogacz uważa za metafizykę człowieka, ale także w teorii poznania i w etyce, na co chcielibyśmy zwrócić uwagę w tym artykule.
Professor Mieczysław Gogacz says that transcendental properties, through which we observe act of existence of being, serve as a fundament of the sole real relations which a personal being initiates towards other beings. Hence, we may conclude that—following the famous Leibniz’s formula—that transcendentals are the windows and door of being, while as „windows” we understand cognition and activities as „door”. This pattern is, as Gogacz claims, accomplished through existential relations, which are indicated by, in other words derive from, transcendental properties such as: love which is built on reality (res), faith built on property of truth (verum) and hope whose fundament we find in transcendental property of good (bonum). Presented approach has its consequences, for the most part in anthropological philosophy understood by Gogacz as metaphysics of man and in theory of knowledge and ethics, to what issue we would like to turn attention in this paper.

Opis:
Ethics of person protection has been based on theory of person and emerging from it concept of personal relations. Thus, it should be recognized as personalistic ethics, if we understand personalism as a theory based on an account of a person. Such an ethics is an example of inferring conclusions from Thomistic metaphysics of person and human being – thus, it is Thomistic ethics par excellence. There could be question posed, in what extent proposed by Mieczysław Gogacz and his followers version of Thomistic ethics refers to classical Aristotelian and Thomistic eudaimonism? It seems that the core of the proposition relies on inferring conclusions from Thomas’ theory of love, in which love is the source of every human acts, is the principle of habituation and virtues as well as the most desired interpersonal relation. All these aspects Aquinas poses in his modifications of the Greek eudaimonism. For Thomas, the only good which results in happiness relies on relations with person – God or people. Mieczysław Gogacz continues this thread, but he does not concentrate only on problems of aims and happiness, because protection of person is an proper aim for him and protection is accomplished within relating with person through faith, hope and mainly love, and results in human happiness. We could therefore say, that ethics of protection of person is a modification of Aristotle’s ethics inasmuch as Thomism is modification of his metaphysics: Thomas Aquinas pays attention on the basic role of love in ethics and life, Mieczysław Gogacz has established love the basic pivot of his ethical and pedagogical theories.
