Is it possible to look at something without actually noticing it? Is it possible to see something in the picture that is not really there? The answers to these philosophical questions can be obtained by comparing the results of eye-tracking tests combined with interviews based on sociological theories. The answers, however, have more than the philosophical dimension in that they can provide insight into everyday processes of social perception and its application, also for commercial purposes. In the design phase of the present study, we chose a popular advertising folder available for free for the average consumer. While showing the selected photographs to the respondents (all the pictures included people portrayed during everyday activities), we asked them to pay particular attention to the situations presented. Afterwards, each participant took part in a standardised interview. In our view, the conclusions formulated on the basis of the obtained results are relevant not only to the investigated catalogue, but can also be treated as an indicator of how people usually browse through advertisements and what kind of inferences they make about the world on that basis. While most attention should be given to watching the advertisements, we constitute our dreams of a perfect life, environment and the items that furnish it.

Korean legendary film director Kim Ki-Young’s 1960 work The Housemaid was remade in 2010 by director Im Sang-Soo. The study of the two films can be found as a comparative study of cinematic studies on sound analysis and genre analysis, and a sociological study on social images. However, few studies have looked with a discourse oriented approach. Discourse in the movie is not only a window for communication between characters, but also an important device with non-verbal elements, so it can be said to be discourse has a high importance as an analysis target. This study analyzes the film discourse according to Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical analysis to find out the differences between the characters. This study can be said is meaningful in that it has the characteristics of interdisciplinary research in linguistics and film studies through discourse analysis of two films with different periods.
Dzieło koreańskiego reżysera Kim Ki-Younga o tytule Pokojówka po swoim debiucie w 1960 roku, doczekało się w 2010 nowego obrazu w wizji reżysera Im Sang-soo. Oba te filmy mogą być traktowane jako materiał badawczy nauk filmowych w zakresie analizy fabuły i gatunku, jak i studium socjologiczne obrazu społeczeństwa. Jednocześnie niewiele badań dotyka dyskursu, który w tych filmach jest nie tylko obrazem komunikacji między postaciami, ale także ważnym narzędziem wyposażonym w elementy niewerbalne, uzupełniającym tło komunikacji. Artykuł niniejszy bada więc dyskurs filmowy w świetle analizy teorii dramaturgicznej Ervinga Goffmana, mając na celu ukazanie różnic między bohaterami obu tych dzieł. Wykazuje także cechy interdyscyplinarności badań na styku nauk o filmie i językoznawstwa w postaci analizy dyskursu filmów z różnego okresu.

W świadomości społecznej istnieje przekonanie, że to wykształcenie uzyskane na poziomie wyższym decyduje o sukcesie społeczno-zawodowym jednostki. Trudno jest temu zaprzeczyć. Jednakże wiele badań eksponuje fakt, iż to właśnie szkoła średnia, a w szczególności liceum, jest decydująca, (obok czynnika rodzinnego) w kształtowaniu kapitału kulturowego jednostki i jej „potencjału” społecznego. Trudno jest przecenić w tym zakresie, zarówno w kontekście historycznym, jak i współcześnie, rolę elitarnych szkół licealnych, z absolwentów których w praktyce tworzy się elita intelektualna danego społeczeństwa. Niniejszy artykuł wpisuje się we współczesne debaty na temat roli edukacji w podtrzymywaniu nierówności społecznych. Podejmuje on ten problem na przykładzie społecznych funkcji brytyjskich elitarnych szkół średnich, w kontekście konstruowania tożsamości absolwentów oraz dynamiki relacji między zjawiskiem reprodukcji kulturowej a ruchliwości społecznej.
Higher education, in the social consciousness, is considered to determine the social and professional success of an individual. It is difficult to deny this. However, a vast amount of research highlights the fact that it is, in fact, the secondary education, and the secondary school in particular (apart from the family factor), that is decisive in shaping the individual’s cultural capital, and their social „potential”. In this respect, it is difficult to overrate the role of elite secondary schools, both in the historical and contemporary perspectives, whose graduates form intellectual elites of a given society. This article is a contribution to the contemporary debates on the role of education in sustaining social inequalities. It considers this issue on the example of social functions fulfilled by British elite secondary schools in the context of constructing graduate identities and the dynamics of relations between the phenomenon of cultural reproduction and social mobility.

The social and behavioral sciences need distinctive concepts to escape entrapment in cultural assumptions. Currently there are several sources for concepts, but vernacular words are most frequently used. These words are usually ambiguous and may reaffirm the status quo. This essay proposes that a new approach is implied in Goffman’s work. Most of the new terms he invented went undefined. However, he can be seen as struggling in much of his writing to develop two basic components of the “looking-glass self,” awareness structures and embarrassment. His method seems to have involved using many vernacular cognates and close examination of detailed examples of each concept. The implication is that it might be possible to ground concepts by 1. Listing and examining links to vernacular and technical cognates, and 2. Closely exploring many concrete examples. A study of one type of awareness structure, collective denial (Zerubavel 2006), can also be used to illustrate the potential of this method.

This paper examines social stigma in relation to child welfare involvement. Drawing on interviews with twenty former youth in care, the paper highlights the participants’ experiences with stigma and their adaptive responses. Notably, participants described pervasive stigma that accompanied their status as youth in care. To contend with the stigma they experienced, participants developed a range of responses, including concealment, challenging the stereotypes, physical retaliation, and seeking solidarity. The study aligns with previous research identifying concealment as a relevant strategy for mitigating the effects of stigma among foster care recipients. However, the results also extend the literature in this area by identifying additional adaptive responses. Moreover, the participants revealed that the stigma they experienced was pervasive, yielding long-term effects.

The article offers an analysis of living with a fat body and ways of experiencing it in everyday life in the context of stigmatization of this type of corporality. Biographical interviews with fat people of varying socio-demographic profiles were conducted. The analyses show that having a fat body/being fat is generally a stigma that discredits the individual in the eyes of the so-called normals based on both physical characteristics and character traits allegedly associated with fatness. The participants mainly medicalize and internalize the stigma of fatness and manage it specifically by passing, covering, and coming out. In transgender people, fatness may never take on the characteristics of a stigma, but instead allows the individual to obscure another stigma or conform to social expectations of appearance in line with the gender identity.

Erving Goff man has not only had a huge impact upon his home discipline of sociology but may be its most cited, as well as best known member ever. Nevertheless, Goff man continues to be heavily criticized by his fellow sociologists for his allegedly undecipherable and sloppy methods for conducting empirical research and constructing and accumulating general theory. We demonstrate here that while some of his specific practices were intuitive and unorthodox, and perhaps not always available to Goff man himself through self-reflection, they often included systematic empirical comparisons and generalizations, and grounded, general theory. It is tragic that he apparently died lamenting that these common characteristics of his work have been so little recognized (Berger 1986). He encouraged Verhoeven (1993), among others, to rectify this, and hopefully our own eff orts here have contributed to this important, but unfinished business.

Erving Goffman’s emphasis on impression management in everyday life means that for the most part persons offer only partial or incomplete glimpses of themselves. Indeed, under specifiable conditions self-presentations may take the form of a negational self. If negational selves exist at the person or individual level, then they must also exist at the collective level (that is, if we are to take seriously such notions as the social mind, collective representations, or even culture). Understandings of how this negational self appears and is produced at various analytical levels (micro, meso, and macro) can be anchored via a conceptual schema which merges Goffman’s own identity typology with the three-world model of Jürgen Habermas by way of Talcott Parsons.

Goffmanowska koncepcja instytucji totalnych stępiła się i rodzi dziś więcej pytań, niż udziela odpowiedzi. Z perspektywy ponad pięćdziesięciu lat od wydania Asylums, narosło wokół pracy wiele nieporozumień, a definicja stała się rozmyta i niejasna, umożliwiając używanie jej do opisu nieomal każdej instytucji społecznej. Artykuł ma na celu zmianę tej sytuacji i zaproponowanie skorygowanej, wyostrzonej i dostosowanej do zmieniającej się rzeczywistości społecznej definicji koncepcji instytucji totalnych. Tok argumentacji rozpoczyna ulokowanie koncepcji w historii badań społecznych oraz w kontekstach jej aplikowalności. Kolejny krok stanowi rekonstrukcja krytycznych stanowisk na przestrzeni lat, pozwalająca zidentyfikować słabe i mocne punkty Goffmanowskiej propozycji. Następnie artykuł podąża za intelektualnymi dłużnikami Goffmana, którzy udoskonalają lub budują konkurencyjne propozycje teoretyczne na bazie przemyśleń dotyczących instytucji totalnych. Na końcu, korzystając z prezentowanych wcześniej w artykule uwag oraz pomysłów innych badaczy, zostaje przedstawiona autorska rekonfiguracja koncepcji instytucji totalnych.
Goffman’s concept of total institutions seems to have lost its significance and raises a lot of questions. From the perspective of more than 50 years since the first publication of Asylums, there has been a great deal of confusion surrounding this work. The definition of total institutions itself is fuzzy and ambiguous, applicable to almost any social institution. This article aims at offering a corrected, precise and upto-date definition of total institutions. It starts with placing the concept in the context of other social studies and its applicability. Then it moves on to reconstruct the critical comments, identifying the weak and strong points of Goffman’s concept. It discusses other alternative theoretical constructs which build on his work. Finally, the author formulates a reconfiguration of the concept.

Intimate partner abuse is a complex, multi-faceted phenomenon, highly situated and “locally-produced” by intimate partners in the domestic interactional milieu. Adopting a symbolic interactionist approach, this article uses a limited topical life-history case study to investigate the interactional experiences of a male victim of female-perpetrated intimate partner abuse. The theoretical analysis utilises Goffman’s conceptualisation of the “territories of the self” and their subjection to various forms of contamination or “modalities of violation”, applied in this case to the contested domestic interactional milieu. The paper seeks to add to a developing qualitative literature on male victims’ experiences of intimate abuse and violence, and to extend Goffman’s conceptual insights into a new domain.

This article is devoted to the relation between privacy and behaviour in public places. It has already been more than half a century since Erving Goffman published his notes on the social organization of gatherings. Today, the context for meetings in public places is round-the-clock monitoring—exposing oneself online, giving other persons access to one’s privacy through internet applications, and being under the eye of the camera 24 hours a day. This context means that the delicate balance between—to use Goffman’s terminology—the stage and the wings has been disturbed. On the basis of field material visual diaries kept by over a dozen persons in the Poznań area), the author concludes that people spontaneously create privacy shields. He presents ten grassroots protective strategies to show that people in contemporary cities spontaneously balance what is private with what is public.

The term “rhetoric” often has been maligned by those lacking familiarity with classical Greek and Latin scholarship. However, a more sustained, historically-informed examination of persuasive interchange is of fundamental importance for the study of human knowing and acting across the humanities and social sciences, as well as all other realms of community life. While acknowledging several contemporary scholars who have reengaged aspects of classical Greek and Latin rhetoric, this statement gives particular attention to the works of Kenneth Burke and the linkages of Burke’s writings with Aristotle’s Rhetoric, as well as American pragmatist thought and the ethnographically, conceptually-oriented sociology known as symbolic interactionism (Blumer 1969; Strauss 1993; Prus 1996; 1997; 1999; 2015; Prus and Grills 2003). Because scholarship does not exist as isolated instances of genius, even the productions of highly accomplished individuals such as Kenneth Burke are best understood within the context of a horizontal- temporal, as well as a vertical-historical intellectual community. Accordingly, Burke’s contributions to the human sciences more generally and pragmatist social theory (along with its sociological extension, symbolic interaction) more specifically are best comprehended within this broader, historically-enabled scholarly context. Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic pragmatism is not the only missing link between classical Greek thought and symbolic interactionism, but Burke’s work on rhetoric represents a particularly important medium for extending the conceptual and analytic parameters of contemporary symbolic interaction. Indeed, Kenneth Burke’s scholarship has important implications for the fuller study of community life as implied in the most fundamental and enabling terms of human knowing and acting.

Ontologic structures in a socio-political editorial – a socio-cognitive approachThe aim of the present study is to analyze the conceptualization of ontological structures in a special type of journalistic writing represented by a socio-political editorial. According to the socio-cognitive approach (Goffman, Langacker), the author discusses the problem of discursive mechanisms related to the persuasive function of language and classification. Therefore, in basis of the gathered linguistic corpus, which constitutes of forty French editorials, treating about university and public service pension reforms, culled from the web pages of different journals and magazines (2007–2008), the author intends to describe the distribution of two semantic roles such as agent and patient (by means of the synthetic scheme presented in this paper) in the context of the persuasiveness of media communication. The way of constructing the semantic roles of participants both influences and modifies the readers’ opinions and their perception of the world.

On 20 May 2011, the Time weekly published a special report issue in its entirety covering the killing of Osama bin Laden. Clearly, owing to its thematic coherence, the Time Special Report issue could be examined through the lenses of qualitative content analysis tools. This paper, however, applies Goffman’s Frame Analysis. Based on two basic assumptions: (1) that the “frame” amounts to the structured knowledge and (2) that the language of media reports is never neutral, but highly constructed, the paper argues that the examined Time issue is fundamentally built on three frames: the “war on terror” frame, the “hero” vs. the “enemy no. 1” frame and, finally, the “indestructible USA” vs. the “primitive, yet promising Islamic countries” frame. In addition, drawing on the cognitive concepts of figure/ground organization and focalization, as well as the notion of metaphor, it investigates how the above distinguished frames are manipulated and modified.
