Opis:
The paper makes reference to the concept of identity which constitutes the result of the interaction of four parameters comprising the model of the Imperial Tetragon of Embodiment (ITE) by Puppel (2009, 2011). With reference to the above theoretical framework, this contribution makes an attempt to describe the status of the ITE parameters in relation to the communicative behaviours of a Polish high school intellectually gifted student with regard to his functioning in an educational institution (which will enable one to establish the identity of the aforementioned learner). Notably, it is postulated that the potential of intellectually gifted students should be given due consideration in the process of forming higher education curricula.

Opis:
The term "special education" is used, in most cases, for the education of children with learning disabilities, emotional problems, behavioral difficulties, severe physical limitations, or difficulties related to low cognitive abilities. "Gifted education", on the other hand, is used for educating the more able, children with high learning ability or special talents, creative children or children who had achieved highly in school-related or any other area, such as chess, music, painting, etc. However, many gifted children belong to both categories. Some suffer from problems or irregularities unrelated to their giftedness, for example – learning disabilities (e.g. dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD), or physical limitations, such as hearing loss, blindness, or paralysis. Some have to deal with issues directly or indirectly connected to their giftedness. For example: social acceptance has to do with conforming to the classroom norms, speaking about subjects considered age-appropriate, or being careful not to use "high level" vocabulary. A gifted child might find it difficult to participate in activities he or she has no interest in, not expressing feelings or ideas because they might seem odd to the peers, or thinking before using any rare or unconventional word or expression. A gifted child who is bored in the classroom might adopt behaviors such as abstention from activities, daydreaming or becoming the "classroom clown" and disturbing the teachers with voice-making, making jokes at others' expense or even at the teacher's. Such behaviors – not necessary a result of the child's giftedness but related to it – lead, in many cases, to labeling the child as "badly adjusted", "socially misfit", "isolated", or the like. In this article I intend to describe the social and the educational difficulties the gifted child has to deal with in the regular as well as in the gifted classroom and present techniques which might help overcoming them. I will present in detail four, all gifted with either learning disabilities or emotional problems, and the successful interventions they had gone through until reaching reasonable results.

Opis:
The aim of the article is the presentation of the role and means of using art in teaching a foreign language to linguistically gifted children at an early-school age, more precisely, what methods and forms of teaching should be prioritised in teaching children with these abilities. The research method was the analysis of the scientific literature dealing with this problem. The article presents the impact of art on multidimensional child development – affective and cognitive, and primarily, on the advantages of learning English related to art. The concept of a linguistically gifted student was defined, and methods of working with students having these abilities were provided. Content, forms, methods, and means used in the work with such students were considered. The authors stress the competencies which may be effectively developed based on art. The results of the analysis showed that working with gifted children constitutes a challenge for teachers. Therefore, the article presents examples of teaching materials, exercises, tasks, methods, and techniques integrating various forms of art with language learning. In conclusion, the authors emphasise that art is a wonderful teaching aid and may be a starting point for many linguistic tasks motivating to authentic use of language both by gifted students and those who do not possess special linguistic talents.

Opis:
The present paper discusses the outcomes of research realised as part of the ‘Recognising and encouraging the development of aptitude for learning mathematics in older kindergartners and primary school pupils’ project. To start with, data concerning the occurrence of mathematical giftedness in older pupils is offered together with an explanation of the reasons for the previous lack of interest in the issue of inclinations for mathematical giftedness in children. Subsequently, I present a description of the mental traits of older kindergarteners which indicate their inclination for mathematical giftedness. I also go on to outline the research programme on the basis of which I managed to: (a) develop diagnostic methods for determining the inclination for mathematical giftedness in children, (b) estimate the number of children manifesting an inclination for mathematical giftedness and children endowed with an inclination for outstanding mathematical giftedness, (c) determine the reasons why groups of children manifesting their mathematical giftedness become significantly reduced after the first months of education. Finally, I discuss the critical periods crucial for developing inclinations for mathematical giftedness in children. I additionally provide an explanation of why it is impossible to fix the neglected cultivation of an inclination for an aptitude in mathematics in the subsequent years of school education.

The study aimed to investigate the attitudes of preschool teachers towards gifted children. A sample of 70 Slovenian preschool teachers was included in the study. The data was collected using a quantitative data collection technique and a questionnaire as a measurement tool. The results showed that preschool teachers believe gifted children’s characteristics are most easily recognised in the preschool years, especially in the second age group (3-6 years). Most respondents (82.9%) believe it is easier to recognise giftedness in children in the general intellectual domain. Most preschool teachers consider pedagogical differentiation and individualisation important when working with gifted preschool children. More than half of the respondents (57.1%) answered that they do not use tools for discovering gifted children, and the majority of them believe that they do not know the early signs of giftedness. In conclusion, gifted children should be identified in early childhood so that their development and potential can be adequately nurtured.

Giftedness and nonconformist behaviour have become a source of great interest in both the public sphere and in educational research. This is related to the fact that nonconformity (as a personality and character trait) has been, and still is, an indispensable element of the creative transformation of societies in the public sphere.1 The paper presents results of research conducted in the years 2014-2016 on the level of nonconformity of gifted students in Poland and England. The research, conducted with the Creative Behaviour Questionnaire III (CBQ III), was undertaken among 30 purposefully selected students from the University of Silesia (Poland) as well as Oxford University (England). By considering both the influence of nonconformists on the transformations taking place in the public sphere, and also the results of my research, I will examine whether nonconformity is a potential source of strength or weakness to the public sphere. In this context nonconformist is a person who does not conform to a generally accepted pattern of thought or action.

Opis:
This article is devoted to the issue of special educational needs in the context of working with a gifted learner, with particular linguistic abilities. Satisfying the needs of such children and providing them with opportunities for integral development of linguistic competence demands a different educational approach – similar to the situation when working with students with some limitations in their learning processes. The approach taken reflects the concepts and definitions of abilities presented in this article. The analysis of those elements suggests ways of identifying gifted learners and, as the next step, also offers certain educational solutions which can easily be applied in teaching. One such way can be preparing children and teenagers for international language certificates in German – Fit in Deutsch 1 and 2 as a form of extra-curricular activities. These certificates are at the A1/A2 level of language skills according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As they are aimed at young people aged 10–16, it is possible to include primary school students in preparation for them, which in turn allows the learners to develop language skills and linguistic interests at the second stage of education. This article serves as a general overview and should not be taken as an empirical research.

This article contains the results of the first research carried out in Poland, the aim of which was to estimate the number of children with a diagnosis of disability, with the makings of mathematical talents. This was inspired by the analysis of the lives and scientific achievements of outstanding scientists who – according to the current criteria – would be classified as disabled. The development and implementation of the research program was based on the scientific findings and the results of the research carried out in the project Recognition and support for the develop¬ment of aptitude for learning mathematics in older preschoolers and young students (R 17 006 03) financed from the funds for science in 2007–2010. Therefore, after presenting more important arguments in favor of the need to estimate the number of disabled children with mathematical talents, the following sections were separated in this article: knowledge about the shaping of the makings of mathematical talents of Polish children, namely: (a) terminological findings, (b) research results showing that more than half of the children manifest mathematical talents between preschool and school education, among them every fourth child has the makings of high talents (c) explaining why in the following years of school education fewer and fewer students show their unique mental abilities in school mathematics activities; results of research on the makings of mathematical talents in children with a diagnosis of disability attending selected kindergartens with integration classes, including: (a) assumptions adopted in these studies, (b) discussion of the procedures and research methods used, (c) description of the actual possibilities of using mathematical education by children with the diagnosis of disability, (d) the results of the research, in which it was estimated that every third child with such a diagnosis has the makings of mathematical talents with the characteristics of their functioning in mathematical activities; conclusions from the research including: (a) an explanation why it is so difficult to help children with disability in developing the makings of mathematical talents, (b) the formulation of actions that should be taken to change the educational situation of disabled children with the makings of mathematical talents for the better, (c) a list of social benefits and economic issues that the proposed changes will bring.

The paper deals with the possibility of using a screening method for the assessment of intellectual giftedness at preschool age by two groups of persons – nursery teachers and parents. It presents The Characteristics of Giftedness Scale (CGS) for preschool children from Linda Silverman and its Czech translation that was verified from the aspect of parallel validity with a standardized IQ test. The CGS was filled in by experienced nursery teachers and by parents of preschool children and their assessments were analysed from the aspect of similarity and diversity. The results show that teacher assessment is closer to the IQ test results compared with parents who tend to overestimate their children. Eight items with low agreement between the two groups of respondents were identified and their expected sources discussed.

In the last decade, the growing interest in the subject of musicians’ mental practice has produced a significant increase in research on mental and instrumental practice. More than half of all the studies concerns professional musicians, and relatively little research is conducted on children or adolescents. The article will describe research on the mental practice of teenagers attending music schools in Poland and Germany. Questionnaire surveys answer the question of whether young people use mental practice, how they do it, and what the content of mental training while practicing an instrument is. The analysis suggests that gifted adolescents from both countries (1) do not use mental rehearsal very often and (2) use mental practice strategies in a similar way. What they differ in is the frequency of using mental practice as an integral part of their instrumental learning, using musical-analytical strategy, and the quality of mental practice. The study indicates the need to teach mental practice and its importance in increasing the effectiveness of instrumental practice.

The context of the research is interest in Adrienne von Speyr as a woman endowed with unique qualities and a unique mission in the Church. This general interest inspired the research into her childhood and youth, when some of these qualities were already present. The argumentation process involved analyzing sources and citing content relevant to the theoretical framework. The research confirms von Speyr’s giftedness in her childhood and youth and delineates its characteristics. We can conclude that her early talents and gifts are in themselves worthy of interest and that they may inspire further research on her life and work in general.
