    Saint Gertrude the Great (1256-1302) was a Saxon Christian saint. She died in the monastery of Helfta. As a young girl, she joined the Benedictine monastery at Helfta, under the direction of its abbess, Gertrude of Hackeborn. She is sometimes confused with her abbess, which is why she is often incorrectly depicted in art holding a crosier. She later experienced a conversion to God and began to strive for perfection in her religious life, turning her scholarly talents to scripture and theology. Many of the writings of St. Gertrude have unfortunately perished. Those now extant are: The Legatus Divinae Pietatis, the Exercises of St. Gertrude and the Liber Specialis Gratiae of St. Mechtilde. The Exercises, which are seven in number, embrace the work of the reception of baptismal grace to the preparation for death. Her glowing language deeply impregnated with the liturgy and scriptures exalts the soul imperceptibly to the heights of contemplation. St. Gertrude the Great hada very special devotion for the Sacred Heart. St. Gertrude taught that Jesus has given us the gift of His Sacred Heart so that, when suffering, we can seek our refuge and our consolation there. The characteristic trait of St. Gertrude's piety is her devotion to the Sacred Heart, the symbol of that immense charity which urged the Word to take flesh, to institute the Holy Eucharist, to take on Himself our sins, and, dying on the Cross, to offer Himself as a victim and a sacrifice to the Eternal Father.

    The article juxtaposes the problems of spatiality and repetition in video game narrative with Gertrude Stein’s notion of the landscape play, in which the linear plot dissolves in favour of a complex network of connections between different elements of the work. Several examples are discussed, from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to the Dark Souls series, showing the possible links between video games and Stein’s writing techniques, especially in the field of open world games, where the large, easily accessible spaces make it more difficult to build coherent, organised plots.

    Opis:
    Sylvia Marie Likens was an American murder victim from Indiana. She was tortured to death by a housewife – Gertrude Baniszewski, Gertrude’s children, and other young people from their neighborhood in Indianapolis. Sylvia was the third child of carnival workers – Betty and Lester Likens. The Likens’ marriage was unstable and the family moved many times. Sylvia was often boarded out or forced to live with relatives while her parents were working. In the summer of 1965 16-year-old Sylvia and her a year younger sister Jenny, who was disabled from polio, were left in the care of the Baniszewski family three months before her death. The author of the article tells the story of Sylvia Likens and indicates different kinds of concealment practices which are essential elements of the crime. These social practices favored domestic violence against Sylvia. Therefore, they contributed largely to the extreme suffering, both physical and mental, and ultimately to the premature death of the girl.

    On the 1st of. May 2015, in Meatpacking District of West Manhattan, the new building of the Whitney Museum of American Art was opened. It is the fourth location of this well-known New York museum, which was established in 1930, by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The Whitney possesses the world’s largest collection of American art and focuses on exhibiting living artists. Spectacular, industrial in character architecture signed by Renzo Piano has met with mixed reactions. The building is functional and well connected with the post-industrial site, however, not appreciated by everyone. Similar situation happened forty years ago, when Centre of Georges Pompidou, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, pioneers of high-tech architecture, was widely criticised. Only popularity, high attendance and commercial success of famous Paris facility changed that negative opinion. Is the New Whitney following the same path – time will tell.
    1 maja 2015 r., w zaułku zachodniego Manhattanu zwanym Meatpacking, otwarta została nowa siedziba Whitney Museum of American Art. Jest to już czwarta lokalizacja tego znanego nowojorskiego muzeum, założonego w 1930 r. przez rzeźbiarkę Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Muzeum posiada największą na świecie kolekcję amerykańskiej sztuki współczesnej. Jego działalność koncentruje się na promocji twórczości artystów żyjących. Oryginalna, industrialna w wyrazie architektura, autorstwa pracowni Renzo Piano, wzbudziła mieszane uczucia. Pomimo, że budynek jest funkcjonalny i znakomicie powiązany z miejscowym poprzemysłowym kontekstem, nie wszystkim przypadł do gustu. Podobna sytuacja miała już miejsce 40 lat temu w Paryżu, kiedy krytykowano nowatorskie Centrum Pompidou, wspólne dzieło architektów Renzo Piano i Richarda Rogersa, pionierów stylu współczesnej architektury nazwanego high-tech. Dopiero wielka popularność i sukces frekwencyjny słynnej paryskiej „rafinerii” spowodował zmianę ocen tego obiektu. Czy tak się też stanie w wypadku nowej siedziby Muzeum Whitney w Nowym Jorku – czas pokaże.

    Persian Pictures, Gertrude Bell’s first published collection, differs substantially from her later works; critics have accused it of sentimentality, lack of substance – a mere ‘folly’ incommensurable with Bell’s later writings. In the present article, I intend to advocate for Bell, though, proposing to see the supposed faults of Persian Pictures as the work’s greatest strengths which in fact reveal the author’s other, more lyrical and less ‘business-like’, side. With special emphasis placed on the concept of gateways and walls I will attempt to shed light on how, by traversing and/or transgressing borders of various types and putting herself to a series of identity-forming tests, Persian Pictures – to the contemporary reader – offer insight into the broader apparatus of British (and Western) colonialism.By linking each of the selected essays with one of John Frederick Lewis’s orientalist paintings, I hope to further strengthen my argument that aspects of Persian Pictures, originally seen as the work’s weaknesses, have the potential to actually enrich discussions of Western mis/representations of the Orient, without compromising its author, and should thus be approached as instances of powerful and vivid responses to the ‘shock of the new,’ as experienced by Gertrude Bell – and, in fact, many other travellers, male and female alike, who ventured into these realms.
    Persian Pictures, pierwsze opublikowane dzieło Gertrude Bell, znacznie różni się od jej późniejszych prac. Krytycy zarzucali jej, że jest to kolekcja sentymentalnych anegdot, niewspółmiernych z jej dojrzalszą twórczością. W niniejszym artykule podejmę próbę „zrehabilitowania” Gertrude Bell, proponując uznać przywoływane wady tekstu za najmocniejsze strony zbioru, które pozwalają ujrzeć inną – młodszą, mniej doświadczoną – Bell, ale już wtedy oddaną „sprawie wschodniej”. Kładąc nacisk na kwestie przekraczania granic i transgresyjnych pasaży, przyjrzę się wybranym esejom z kolekcji Persian Pictures pod kątem ukazania ewolucji tożsamości Bell i rozwoju jej twórczości w kontekście szczytu brytyjskiej ekspansji kolonialnej na Bliskim Wschodzie. Dzięki porównaniu poszczególnych anegdot Bell z orientalistycznym malarstwem Johna Fredericka Lewisa, pragnę dowieść, że pewne aspekty Persian Pictures, pierwotnie uznawane za ich najsłabsze punkty, stanowią tak naprawdę o sile i świeżości wczesnego pisarstwa Bell i są asumptem do prowadzenia dyskusji na temat reprezentacji Orientu w twórczości zachodnich badaczy i artystów.

    W artykule opisano życie i osiągnięcia brytyjskiej archeolożki Gertrude Bell (1868-1926), która była autorką siedmiu książek i wielu artykułów, a w czasach pierwszej wojny światowej jedyną kobietą z tytułem oficera politycznego (Political Officer) oraz pełniła funkcję sekretarza ds. orientalnych (Oriental Secretary). Nieformalnie nazywano ją „niekoronowaną królową Iraku”. Wspomniano o wpływach Brytyjczyków na Bliskim wschodzie i ich roli w dalszym kształtowaniu się wschodnich terenów. Gertrude Bell była kobietą z wyższych sfer wiktoriańskiej Anglii, która jako jedna z nielicznych ukończyła studia na Oksfordzie. Podróżowała po Iranie (wtedy Persji), Syrii czy Palestynie, stała się też doskonałym źródłem dla brytyjskiego wywiadu, brała udział w arabskiej rewolucji, miała wpływ na kształtowanie się Iraku.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest próba interpretacji faktu pielgrzymiej nieobecności bł. Doroty z Mątów (1347-1394) w stosunkowo bliskich topograficznie dwóch ośrodkach duchowości cysterskiej w Oliwie i Pelplinie. Bł. Dorota z Mątów w celu odnowienia ducha codziennie nawiedzała „święte ustronia” w Gdańsku, a okresowo również „święte ustronia” w miejscowościach, do których pielgrzymowała. W historii teologii duchowości udokumentowano sekwencję, odbytych przez nią pielgrzymek do odległych sanktuariów średniowiecznej Europy, w tym m.in. do: Koszalina, Piaseczna, Akwizgranu, Finsterwalde (Einsiedeln), Rzymu i Kwidzyna. Analiza powołanych źródeł wykazała, że bł. Dorota z Mątów nigdy nie podjęła pielgrzymki do dwóch ośrodków duchowości cysterskiej w Oliwie i w Pelplinie pomimo stosunkowo niewielkiej odległości od miejsca jej zamieszkania w tzw. okresie gdańskim (1363-1391) jej życia. Fakt ten zaskakuje i rodzi pytanie o przyczyny takiej decyzji. Artykuł ten stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, które zostało postawione w tytule opracowania, na podstawie zanalizowanych źródeł cysterskich i dorotańskich. Niemniej, zagadnienie pozostaje nadal otwarte.
    The subject of the article is an attempt to interpret the fact of the pilgrim’s absence of bleesed Dorothy of Montau (1347-1394) in relatively close topographically two centers of cistercian spirituality in Oliwa and Pelplin. Blessed Dorothy of Montau in order to renewal of the spirit she visited the holy places of secludedness in Gdańsk every day, and periodically the holy places, where she went on pilgrimage too. In the history of theology of spirituality, the sequence of her pilgrimages to distant sanctuaries of medieval Europe was documented, including to: Koszalin, Piaseczno, Akwizgran (Aachen), Finsterwalde (Einsiedeln), Rome and Kwidzyn. Analysis of the cited sources showed that blessed Dorothy of Montau just never made a pilgrimage to two centers of the Cistercian spirituality in Oliwa and Pelplin, despite the relatively short distance from her place of residence in the so – called the Gdańsk’s period (1363-1391) of her life. This fact is surprising and raises the question of the reasons for this decision. This article is an attempt to answer the question, that was posed in the title of the study, based on the analyzed Cistercian and Dorothean’s sources. However, the issue remains open.
