Sorbian studies in Japan: trends and perspectives Summary How does it come that Japanese scholars get interested in Sorbian studies? In this paper we review how Sorbian studies emerged and evolved in Japan, centering on the humanities – especially on linguistics and literature studies. Of course, motivations to work on Sorbian studies vary from scholar to scholar. But characteristic of the situation in Japan is that along with interested Slavists, not a few Japanese researchers on Sorbian studies have begun their study with a German studies background. This fact suggests that a joint approach from the German and Slavistic viewpoints may enrich Sorbian studies in Japan. At the end of this paper, the actual list of works on Sorbian themes by Japanese researchers written in languages other than Japanese is added as an appendix.

Comparative studies in culture are a term, which differs from philological comparative studies. It means a sub-discipline, which concerned with aspects of culture outside of literature and linguistics, in this case with comparisons of German and Polish culture.

The number of migrants in contemporary Germany is constantly growing. There are also increasing problems arising as a result of cultural differences between the immigrants and the local population and also due to different habits of both groups. These differences, foreign traditions and their perception in Germany seem to be important topics from viewpoint of cultural studies not only for scientist, but also for students of German Studies, especially if the customs and forms of life become the subject of literature. In the following article the authoress is trying to bring near some of the main cultural differences between migrants and the local community depicted in the literature. To achieve this goal she analyses selected texts of German writers of Turkish origin. She also makes an attempt at answering the question whether and to what extent such a kind of literature can be useful for the audience outside Germany.

The article addresses the development of curricula for German study programs in Central Eastern European Countries over the past 70 years, from the post-war period to the present. These are shaped by social framework conditions and historical factors, such as the end of the war in 1945, and the years directly following, membership of the so-called communist Eastern Bloc, and membership in the EU in 2004 and 2007. The political changes of 1989/1990 marked one of the most important milestones; a period began in which western languages including the German language flourished in German departments; only with demographic change has enrolment dropped rapidly since the turn of the millennium. Already in the first decade of reunification, German institutes “lost” their graduates to careers that were not oriented towards the humanities, a phenomenon dominated by international companies with business contacts in German-speaking countries. Today, the majority of universities and German studies institutes are reacting to the pragmatic demands of the labor market and are modifying their range of courses, even if this is at the expense of traditional curricular content.

In this article, we will critically examine programmes in German at universities in Tirana and Shkodra. After a general, but historically-grounded, introduction to German Studies in Albania, we will discuss basic structural elements such as the content of the three-year programmes in Tirana and Shkodra. In this contribution, special emphasis is given to the current challenges for Programmes in German with respect to the law following the last university reform. Because of our many years of teaching activity and experience in this area, we aim above all to provide a multifaceted view of the problems, tendencies and prospects for Programmes in German in Tirana and Shkodra. Our considerations represent an attempt to continue or revive the international discussion on this topic.

In this contribution, we present the life and work of Józef Darski (1941–2016), a Polish German Philologist, Linguist and Grammarian. The research profile of Józef Darski contains such fields of interest as: dialectology, German grammar, contrastive German-Polish grammar as well as German as a foreign language. The most important work, which influenced his entire research output, was Linguistisches Analysemodell. Definitionen grundlegender grammatischer Begriffe. The way master theses are prepared in the Department of German Studies, University of Wroclaw has changed over the last thirty years. The main objective of the present paper is to show how students‘ motivation has changed. The Bologna Process seems to be an important time frame, and at the same time a reason for many negative developments observed by the author. The paper addresses also what the author considers insufficient preparation of students to participate in the academic discourse, and the lack of knowledge about the true causes of students‘ problems among lecturers and professors. The author suggests that the seminar „Academic Writing“, introduced recently in the Department of German Studies may be a solution to the aforementioned problems.

This article investigates the autobiographic character of Polish-German/German-Polish migrant literature. The text refers to recent research in the German language, highlighting differences with approaches prevalent in Polish scholarship. At the same time, the article illustrates how the idea of “contact between neighboring philologies” can be realized in practice.

For some time now, a clear turn towards education in the field of specialized languages has been observed in German Studies institutes in Poland. This trend is welcomed by current and prospective students of German. Students see it as the practical dimension of the knowledge acquired during their studies. However, whether their needs in the field of specialized language education are fully satisfied is the question to be examined in this paper which will analyse analyze Programmes in German Studies at Polish universities. The focus will be on the content components of the study programmes offered. The aim of the analysis is to diagnose the current situation and uncover desiderata in this area.
